Playing it safe: 'that's part of what it means to be in the music industry'

Last month, SoulCulture.co.uk grabbed some time with Musiq Soulchild to discuss his latest album, Luvanmusiq; a collection of songs touching on mature experiences of life and love, which covers topics of self-improvement and struggles with emotional vulnerability in relationships, whilst the lead single 'Buddy' tackles a need for honest role-definitions. In our interview, he had some interesting thing to say about the nature of relationships, stereotypes inflicted on soul artists, being homeless, and answers back to those who accuse him of playing it safe.

Growing Pains

Today (May 21st 2007) the late Notorious B.I.G being would be celebrating his 35th birthday, and 2Pac would be approaching his 36th birthday. With them both perishing in their mid-20's, their legacy has been preserved at their mind state at that time - some would call it a negligent and immature mind state, but nonetheless it has captivated all involved in hip hop culture.  So with them being seen as somewhat a benchmark for hip hop does that mean that the genre hasn't matured, even though some that are involved in it clearly have?

Whilst everyone questions the values projected by mainstream rap, look to the icons. Dane Bradshaw investigates: with Pac and Biggie immortalised in their mid-20s, can hip hop ever grow up?

Coming Full Circle

When the phonograph was invented in 1877, it changed the way we heard our music very much in the same way the written word changed the way we told our stories. Prior to Thomas Alva Edison's remarkable invention, one had to be in the presence of a particular musician to enjoy his artistry. After…anyone with a record player or hanging out at a "phonograph parlor" could hear their favorite musicians without having any idea what they looked like. As pronounced in 1979 by The Buggles, "Video Killed the Radio Star," but what wasn't stated was that video killed the live performer as well.

After the MTV generation killed the craft of performance in favour of heavy video rotation, Tariiq O. Walton explores the resurgence of live music....

Visit www.soulculture.co.uk for our new interview with UK and International Soul Legend...
Omar:

He Sang, We Wanted It.
With a Chinese-Jamaican father and Indian mother, raised in Canterbury and nestled in London, Omar's music is as eclectic as his background: a fusion of latin, jazz, funk, soul, reggae, and classical influences. He hated his first single, 'Mr Postman', but still appreciates the ongoing reaction to his most famous single 'There's Nothing Like This' ("as soon as they hear the bass-line, people go ape-shit for it") despite it having over-shadowed all of his subsequent releases. He coolly insists "I've basically achieved everything I've wanted to". SoulCulture talks to Omar about record labels, the music grind, the UK music scene and how it feels to have Stevie Wonder as his biggest fan whilst most people in his own country don't know he's on album number six.....

Joe: 'In My Mind, I Was Kinda Mediocre'

Georgia-born, New York-living soul singer Joe is something of a household name when it comes to modern soulful R&B; smooth hits glistening with romance and lust such as 'Don't Wanna Be A Player', 'I Wanna Know' and 'All The Things (Your Man Won't Do)' ensured his spot in many a bedroom play list around the western world. His sixth album due in spring 2007, 'Ain't Nothin Like Me', throws some roughage into that smooth trend with its abundance of rap-collaborations. Joe talks to Soul Culture about the positive influence of hip hop on his attitude as an artist, and explains how soul and R&B would collectively benefit from adopting the openly competitive ambitiousness and entrepreneurial pursuits that are now standard practise for rappers...

K'Naan: The Dusty Foot Philosopher

"Don't pre-judge, I don't want anyone dismissing me as another thug. I'm poor, a refugee, been in prison and survived the war. I come from the most dangerous city in the universe – you're likely to get shot at birth." These are the lyrics of a serene and hospitable 28-year-old artist from Somalia, called K'Naan. He's friends with Mos Def, features on the latest album by M1 from Dead Prez, and supported Damian Marley on his recent tour. Should you ever delve into a dictionary for a definition of 'profound', phrases similar to those which flitted across my mind whilst interviewing this engaging individual should arise; 'having or showing great knowledge or insight', 'demanding deep study or thought', 'intense', 'extending to a great depth'. On his most recent visit to London, SoulCulture joined K'Naan for a long, stimulating chat…

La Bruja: The Hip Hop Poetician

..."All that freedom talk is working so well and it's amazing that this man that we didn't even vote for is in place and all these people are dying. How can you help create freedom in another country when it doesn't even exist in our own? After hurricane Katrina they left those people to die. Where was the military then? Everybody has their eyes wide shut, yeah this is great, land of the free. They want us just full of weapons of mass distraction, American Idol - people just care about that, people do not care what's going on; meanwhile we pay for it! We have no control. It drives me nuts. People have called me anti-patriotic, but I'm being patriotic by feeling this way and saying these things; it's because I care about my people, my country, and the world that I say these things. I consider myself a poetician: I use my poetry to reach the people and to really make change. I'm not a politician that promises all this bullshit and doesn't do it."....

Donell Jones: Jive Talkin'

"Send a letter to the chairman of Sony-BMG about how they are killing my career - somebody has to do something," says the deadly serious voice on the other end of my phone. "I got kids to feed! They don't think about that part, you know? They go home and smile to their wives; they don't know all the lives that they're affecting by not doing their jobs!" He explains, "They're not marketing this album, they're not promoting this album; virtually they're doing nothing for this album. All the sales I've gotten so far have been basically because of my hardcore fans that have known of me in the past. As far as Jive doing anything for this particular project, they've done nothing - I've had no commericals, no radio support, no video..."
