"It's the morning we leave for Nashville and I'm hungover. I just don't know it yet.
Maybe it's the years of practice I have making that labored stretch of ten paces, from the bedroom to my shower, knowing that it promises a sobering 15 minute rinse that will open my eyelids to their underlying red marbles. I usually manage to get that far quite well.
But it's when the rush of promptly getting to work is gone, and I'm sedentary behind a desk, when the mental circus music really starts playing. The hunger, the headache, the churning guts. And if it's compounded by a take-off or mid-flight turbulence, then whimpering and sickened groans and sighs are also involved.
I'd made it through the morning long enough to get to the airport without one complaint. But when our belts were buckled, we were one our way to Minnesota and the words in my Jill Soloway book started dancing, I began to worry. After surfing a wave of nausea, I opened my eyes to find that Rob had placed the motion sickness bag on my lap.
Oh I hate you vodka. You're colorless and summer-y and mix well with fruit juice but there's alchemy in your bottle. It can turn you from a clear liquid form to a textured, multicolored mess. Truly magical.
I wasn't going to let our "pre-anniversary-celebration-celebration" ruin the excitement of leaving California for four days. I savored every sip of my comforting bloody mary mix for the ten minutes it lasted. I buried my head into Rob's shoulder. I tried to eat my Slim Jim even though chewing required the use of more energy then my body could possibly expend. And when we started to land and I realized that none of those things made me feel better, I took the vulnerable barf bag and tucked it behind the cover of my book.
I'm happy to say that I never had to use that vulnerable sack. At the Saint Paul airport, we had time to eat and decided to get some lunch at Chili's. I heard the best meal for a hangover is one that consists of eggs and a banana smoothie, for the protein and potassium. So I ordered a bowl of chili and a side Caesar salad. How that has any nutritional relevance to this story I don't know, but I rationalized it with a brain that was simmering in a skull of drunken broth."
-the first and only completed entry from my Nashville journal

I was brought into a high school counselor's office for bullying. A work associate of mine was playing the part of the victim--she was a popular cheerleader who'd been so hurt by something I did or said that I found us confined to this sterile, stuffy room with bad vertical blinds to "work things out." I sat in a chair against the wall with my arms crossed, watching as layers and layers of hands and sympathetic embraces cupped her shoulders with support. I was disgusted.
The session may have turned to address my low self-esteem, poor upbringing, even alcoholism; they were searching for a deep-seated issue that caused my temper flare-ups and anti-social outbursts. It turned into a nightmare when they brought Rob in, Intervention-style, and he was used to console my victim. They went into a room and I kept hearing "Michelle is" this and "Michelle is" that. Didn't they know I was sitting right there? Apparently I was a horror to communicate with.
All the feelings that I used to have in school that made me insecure and incompetent and upset then became alive and at this point, in reality, is when I might have started sniffling. The moment I crumbled was when the counselor decided to turn the tables and bully me in return; give me a taste of my own meds, so to speak.
The office lights dimmed and an overhead projector began to whirr. The room was now filled with students, about 16 years old (or one of those awkward ages), sitting at those silly right-armed desks from school that I kind of miss. I found myself on the floor just underneath the projection, with all their gleamy little eyes focused on the stream of light above my head. What were they all looking at? I quickly scrambled to another part of the room like a frightened child.
They were analyzing one of my math tests. One that I might have turned in blank when I was a sophomore, in the class with the teacher who threw away my can of green hairspray on Halloween. No, it was from the class I had with Gunmit Jaspal's brother who sang the praises of this new band called The Offspring. Regardless, the test contained one or two of my poorly worked-out equations, which evoked sighs of pity and snarky laughter from those who were reviewing my work from their little wooden thrones.
Drink whiskey, get surly, hurt people's feelings... and this is your punishment. A group of your capable peers scoffing at little nervous pencil marks that you made on a math test in high school because you didn't know how to solve the first damn question. It was the worst of my fears. "I can't do math!" I screamed, but the laughter just started to grow louder. I might have started running away at this point, with my hands held out at my sides, like the most helpless pathetic bastard you could ever imagine. I ran like the god damned wind.
I woke up sobbing, and actual tears had streamed a short path down the sides of my face into my pillow. I realized that math had made me cry and I started crying harder. My alarm hadn't even gone off and Rob was snoring contently next to me. I was so sad and sorry. All because of math.
Math.

Hi guys. I stole the following entry from the Small Pox Mountain Boys MS blog. I'm posting it, not only because it's cool, but I think it truly encompasses the vibe that defines the reason we play...and the pride I have behind performing with my family and good friends/musicians who share the same passion as mine. Enjoy. "If you missed the show at Hensley's Flying Elephant on Saturday, January 6th you missed one heck of a show. In fact, it's the kind of gig that makes me proud to play music and really encompasses why I set out to play live music in bars for people I don't know (and some I do).
Before I ever moved to California (hop into the Wayback Machine), I used to go see bands play in my former home of Tulsa, OK. Tulsa is known for it's amazing music scene and I loved going out to see some of the legends of Tulsa on any given night and sometimes witness what can only be described as musical magic. Forces came together and everyone in the crowd that night felt like they witnessed something that could never take place the same way again. I relished those nights when my local music heroes created that magic, with some of their friends from other bands sitting in or maybe just taking on a song they'd never done and finding that perfect guitar solo or whatever it might be on that night. But when you went home that night you felt like something special had just taken place.
Last night after our gig at Hensley's I felt like in some small way we had achieved that. Everything felt right about it and, from the looks on the faces of the crowd and from the comments of the music lovers at the bar, I know we did something right and left a lot of people feeling the way I used to feel after seeing Steve Pryor and the Mighty Kingsnakes tear the roof off the place or Jim Sweeney hook up with Bill Davis and create more soul than any other two white guys could ever produce. It may sound corny, but I felt the music gods smiling on us last night.
First of all we had quite a "who's who of skateboarding" in the crowd, starting off with Tony Hawk himself. Of course the legendary Matt Hensley owns the place, so that's a given. Jesse Fritsch and 80's legend Adrian Demain were also in attendance. We were joined on stage by Matt Hensley, who is also known as the accordion player in the well known band Flogging Molly. The usual amazing sets by Oliver, Dianne, and Michelle kept the crowd going and we finished up the night being joined by one of the monster bassists on the planet, Alan Deremo who has toured with a ton of famous bands including Glenn Frey of the Eagles, John Denver and Men at Work just to name a few. And we even got a quick back-up vocal from Pat Hawk who has sung with Michael Bolton, The Righteous Brothers, etc. If you've ever listened to the radio you've probably heard her sing. Of course Dave Quillen was on his own planet on lead guitar and Rob Quillen did more than his fair share of drumming duties last night. He was even looking pretty at home behind the cocktail kit.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the show. Thanks to Matt Hensley for owning a bar that puts music first and catering to a crowd who actually gets it. And thanks to Matt for lending his musical talents to us and helping create a little magic.
We'll see you there again soon!"

Hey mean girls, Rob and I just finished recording our second song and it's now posted on The Barnfires happy fun time MySpace pagina (and that's "page" in Spanish, not vagina with a P.. although that is funnier said outloud) We wrote it for the other woman in Rob's life, his mama. Apparently it makes people's eyes sweat. Not a dry eye in the house on her 70th birthday. Take a listen or add it to your page, if you're drunk. Also don't forget to see us shake our potato-salad makers at Hensley's in Carlsbad at 7:30 on Jan 5 (not 6th like Jaimie said). Motorcycles and brain buckets, Michelle

Dear bee-snatches, In case you weren't watching, Brad Paisley won Best Male Vocalist of the Year on the CMAs last night. Down a beer and download a song of his, for all you adventurous music folk. Isn't country music all about cliches?
If you're a:
Drunk: listen to "Alcohol" Woman-picker-upper: listen to "Me Neither" MySpace poser: listen to "Online" Troglodyte: listen to "I'm Still a Guy" Truck owner: listen to "Mud on the Tires" Perverted outdoorsy-type: listen to "Ticks" Jazz fan: listen to "Time Warp" (AWESOME) (instrumental) Delusional band frontman: listen to "Easy Money" Hollywood cynic: listen to "Celebrity" Pessimistic camper: listen to "Better Than This" Cigar Snob: listen to "The Cigar Song" The Bored Church-Goer: listen to "Long Sermon" Husband: listen to "She's Everything" (our wedding song) Fisherman: listen to "I'm Gonna Miss Her" (dude....) Boyfriend: listen to "The World" Angry ex-boyfriend: listen to "I'll Take You Back" If you're none of these, listen to Rascal Flatts.
His lyrics are the great, and his guitar playing even better. YAY!

Music: I say this every time we play, but I'm sickeningly out of practice for our next gig. Someone at work once said "When you're a singer, don't you practice day in and day out, and make it your life's work?" My answer, "No. Not me." It was true. He's a freaking hippie, by the way. But he went to our show before last, and quite enjoyed himself. I think. Freak.
We're playing this weekend at a new place, which is exciting. But a touch of expected grandiosity entails this venue that just makes me want to say, "Who do you think I am, Britney Spears?" and just stay home. Oh well, maybe it'll be cool. In other news, Rob hasn't acquired any new guitars. Funds were distributed this month among appetizers, booze, and random fake limbs for the Halloween party this year. It might even be that he has all he needs. [Just kidding, he wants an analog delay pedal... Christmas list!] All I have is my mic, but I'd like to master the coordination of using an egg shaker in time as I sing. I can't do it, what's wrong with me? I can simultaneously pat my head and rub my belly better than I can keep a damn rhythm instrument going as I'm singing! For those named Geddy Lee, we salute you.
Love: I was really excited about our "couples costume" this year, even though it seemed like most people didn't get it. Not only did Rob's incarnation of an undead allow the floodgates to open for Rob Zombie puns, but I did some "Alice" wardrobe research online and I think I pulled it off pretty well. As some of you may know, I'd love to be a special FX makeup artist. This year I got to practice using spirit gum on my very own gerbil of a husband. "Raccoon City" has also been quite literal in our usage of late, because we've been overrun with the masked critters almost every night leaving cat food out for the strays. They're very cute, though. Little do we know they could eat our faces.
Back to the makeup, I must say (ad nauseum, if you're a goth) that blood is very versatile. A comforting, cushion-y catalyst of a scary costume, it's like icing on a cupcake. Just as a freshly-shorn head is to grey creme makeup. Yay for latex!
Life: Firestorms. What else was there. We had one of our first Halloween parties at Syracuse Manor after the cedar fires in 2004 (?). This time our bags were packed, and the threat rendered our fellow bandmate Oliver and his lovely fiancee from Rancho Bernardo listless in Mira Mesa. Luckily, the Witch fire didn't lick us with its devilish tongue. It did however keep us from going to L.A. to see Brad Paisley perform at Jimmy Kimmel Live. Dammit! We arranged PTO for those days, and we spent them watching the news in bed! There's something so apocalyptic about local natural disasters yet we are surprised that the world is calm whilst shopping for cat carriers. Weird.
Misc: First of all, I couldn't help but feel like I was placing the L.A.M.B. product while writing the subject line for this entry ("Love Angel Music Baby" a la Gwen Stafani). Rob and I have come to kind of despise her as an artist. To paraphrase Rob's comment, she was the first to validate the whole "women in rock" cliche by bringing an original talent/songwriting ability for her generation, but the fact that she ditched her band and went on to compose pop anthems--containing awesomely bad catch-phrases--completely negated this credibility. "Tragic Kingdom" is one of my all-time favorite albums. "Return of Saturn" is also good, I have to say. But Hollaback Girl? I can't even put that in quotation marks! Coming from someone who knows the music biz (Rob, not I), I must agree with Rob. Personally, I feel a bit ashamed now to list her among my musical influences, which she was. That shit is bananas.

Okay, we're playing again at:
Finnegan's on 12.30 Hennessey's Tavern in Vista on 1.13.07 Finnegan's on 1.20.07
Let us entertain, let us entertain, let us entertain you!
Here's Bob with the weather. I mean me, with our news:
Music: Rob got the VOX AC30 that he wanted for Christmas. He has written the beginnings of a few more songs to which I will soon write/sing the melodies. Knock on 100% genuine imitation wood that I do. We gave each other a plethora of CDs this year that include Queensryche, Incubus, and a jitterbug/swing collection. And Perez Prado, but that was premature. I'm discovering the world of mambo.
Love: We spent Christmas eve with the Quillen fam and had a really good time. I watched the brothers punch each other like the Three Stooges. The ham was to kill oneself for. My mom and dad made an appearance later on to deliver presents like an elusive Satan Claus. The night before, Rob and I had dinner with them and my broham. Nothing like a jellyfish salad to start off the holiday eating. I'm forever grateful for my loving and generous family. And yes, I eat jellyfish. They're like sesame-flavored shoelaces! And I love shoes.
Life: We got our first Christmas tree as a little plaid family this year. "We" being Rob, me, Billie and Hellboy. We rested much and watched movies. If you haven't seen The Family Stone, I recommend it. If you haven't seen My Super Ex-Girlfriend, don't bother. Rob gave me The Pink Panther and V for Vendetta among other things. It's a holiday of movies. Derberger.
Misc: Nothing else at this time except for an apology that I didn't send Christmas cards out. More when the mood strikes.
I'll let you know how the shows go. But I can tell you now that the shirt I'm wearing for it the coolest. Just kidding, Rob's is better.
bleeeet, Michelle

Hi everyone't. This is what's going on in my world:
The Puppini Sisters: My new favorite group. Close harmony backed by an acoustic hot jazz trio. Reminiscent of the Squirrel Nut Zippers... I really, really like them. It may not be news that they're great, but hearing them, hearing about them…even their website is cute. I think it's incredible that their rendition of "Wuthering Heights" has surpassed "Time Warp" as The-Song-that-Defines-Rob-and-Me. It's Kate Bush to jazz, and an honorable tribute. Please check them out if it means shit to any of you's. I think they're so cute.
Brian Setzer Orchestra: Coming to Escondido on Dec. 17th. I'm gonna save up my allowance because I haven't gone to see him since October of 1999. Or something. We're dear friendsn't.
VOX AC30: The amp that Rob wants for xmas. I love that man. So I may have spent almost as much to get him the Breedlove that he so greatly plays for our Jensen gigs… It may not seem like much, but I'm "hood rich" (meaning $50,000 is as much as $50 when you live in Vista). Priorities straight… I will get him what he wants. Thank you, pay raise.
Chocolate-chip cookies: I never had much of a passion to bake until Halloween came 'round. Last band practice was at our house...I finally had the butter to make the batter, and I made batter whilst singing the backup to a Ryan Adams song. Baking cookies is fun. Consider it "Cookie Therapy." Almost as therapeutic as peeling shrimp.
And I guess that's it.
To tell you the truth, the only reason I post blogs is because I think I have friends that might check in and care about what they're reading. I don't keep in touch with many people with whom I care to be friends; by saying that, I'm revealing why I was teased so damn much in junior high. For the same reason, I sometimes read someone's blog and mentally snicker at the author, thinking, "You think people fucking care, don't you."
I might just like talking to computers more than people.
So instead of reposting one of those dumb surveys with witty and premeditated answers, I'm being candid on a purely unsolicited basis via this blog entry. Yes, I honestly do think people fucking care. It's a good thing that I can admit when I'm wrong.

Hello f(r)iends.. I got a promotion on Friday and that's happy. Not only a new title, but a desk next to an actual window.. where the sun can shine on my skin, and make it smoke and smell like burnt ham. Not only more money, but less worry about making the truck payments and being able to buy more shoes. Not only more shoes, but the liberty to shop Hot Topic.com's clearance page for clothes that I can wear to work with skulls on them. In the privacy of my own home. Saturday, Don came over to practice and it was good to sing some new songs. We even had some of the nigori sake that we bought before the party and never opened. Don's acoustic bass is for sale if anyone is interested. He stayed for a late dinner of salad, rice pilaf and broiled tri-tip that made the smoke alarm go off (burning marinade). Then we watched the second season of Wonder Showzen on DVD until he felt like he was high and needed to go home to hide from monsters. Today, Rob and I got some extra sleep thanks to some Excedrin PM ("extra" meaning we got out of bed at 2:00 pm instead of 1:00), only to watch three hours of TV to catch up with our friends in Port Charles. Then we left the house to get groceries, and I got to make hot & sour soup for dinner while Rob practiced guitar. The night's movies were "Feast" (from Project Greenlight) and "The Notorious Bettie Page." We've been putting that off for a while. So we've been married for four months and continue to revel in our fortune for having such a great house that's always full of love and music. And cats. Man, we love them critters. The turnout for our Frontier Frights party last week wasn't superb, but still greater than the number of teeth in the front row of a Jackie Martling show. Nevertheless, friends were there, new and old; and I have yet another costume to add to the "indie-movie-wardrobe" section of our closet. Speaking of indie movies, Rob's friend Russ Cootey has posted Push Film's latest creation, "Falling for You" on the Push Films page. I did a voice-over for it. Find it yourself.
Rob and Deliverance Machine's next show is at the Jumping Turtle in San Marcos on November 10 at 9:00 pm. Rob and I will perform again with Jensen and the Small Pox Mountain Boys at Finnegan's in Carlsbad on Nov. 18th. This set goes from 9:00 to 2:00 AM so we might have to pull out some of our original stuff.
We live a pretty simple life. It really does just requires love, music, and our cats. Things only get complicated when we don't have any one of those things. So we're good right now. We're very good.
That is all, Michelle

I thought I posted this already. I made the cupcakes for our Halloween party. And the cookies were kind of shortbready-tasting with buttercream manicures. Yes, they're fingers.
Feliz Dia De Los Muertos bitches.
