Gu Zheng (Pronounced as Goo Jeng) is an ancient Chinese Zither. It has over 2000 years of history, and it has been evolving through the years. The ancient instruments had less strings (11, 13, 16 strings) than the modern ones (range from 21 strings to 27 strings and more). The strings were used to made of silk, and the players used their own fingers to pluck the strings. Nowadays, the strings are made of steel inside and nylon outside. Players wear picks made of tortoise shells on their right hand or both hands except for the pinkies. There are many traditional folk playing styles of the Gu Zheng emerged from different regions of China such as Shan Dong, He Nan, Chao Zhou, ke Jia, Shan Xi, Fu Jian, etc. There are more and more contemporary playing techniques and compositions emerged since 1950s. Nowadays, Gu Zheng is used more and more in non-classical music genres such as Jazz, Rock, Alternative, New age, Hip-Hop, and more. Its beautiful has been recognized by people through out the world.
