Hi,

Hope this finds you well, Choir Watcher. I just thought I'd bring your attention to the fact that The Wire magazine have found it in their good hearts to include a track from our recent 'Electrical Unity' EP (released in June on Brainlove in partnership with last.fm and Independent Online) on this month's free Wire Tapper CD. Go buy The Wire and put a few quid in the pot of a magazine that actually looks to support music for music's sake.

Hello Internet,

Things are pretty mental here at the moment. But I wanted to take a minute to say that we are giving away our new EP, 'Electrical Unity', via our blog on the Independent Online, hosted on our Last.FM page....

Check it out here:

http://keyboardchoir.livejournal.com/

It's way 2.0. And I don't even know what that means.

We will be posting a track a day this week.... Alongside amusing, informative and generally fascinating commentaries from various members of the band. Seriously.

Big Love,

Hello,

I just wanted to follow up on what Ady said in his last post. Our album, 'Mizen Head to Gascanane Sound', is now available to buy in the shops. So you now have yet another fantastic opportunity to not only support an acexcore independent DIY Cosmic Win of a label (Brainlove) but also to put a few quid in these struggling musician's pockets. You could even go one further and support 1st class indie record store Norman Records:
http://www.normanrecords.com/poogle/index.php?q=keyboard+choir&format=&btnG=Search

I'd like to say a massive thanks to all the journos out there who have given us a whole host of positive reviews. From the Perthshire Advertiser to Planet Sound (Teletext) and the Independent we've had some really nice things written about us and the album, Cheers!

Also, as Ady said last time, we've got some new material recorded. We are just finalising plans, but I think we are gonna be giving the tracks away as a free download to celebrate 'Mizen Head...' finally reaching the shops. Watch this space.

In other news, our collaboration with the incredible Piano Circus (http://www.pianocircus.com/) is coming along. As I type Ady is putting the finishing touches to the score of brand new piece, which I think is called 'The Turing Test' (for the curious amongst you check out Alan Turing here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing). The world premier of this piece will be on 9th June at Kings Place, London. Get a cheap ticket here now: http://www.spnm.org.uk/?page=events

It's sunny today, I'm gonna go for a wander....

Goodbye, and good luck.

Mizzen Head is finally in the shops at last!

It's been absolutely ridiculous how long it's taken but it's been great to see that several great independent record shops (such as the rather good normanrecords) have been flagging it up as a recommended new release and being generally very nice about it!

The reason it took so long is because the distribution company Brainlove records used - Pinnacle - went bust. If our experience was anything to go by, this is because they never managed to move any stock from their warehouse to the shops...

As an 'unsecured creditor' we never got paid for whatever they did manage to ship and to add insult to injury, when they finally called in the receivers, they made us pay to get our CD's back from out from their warehouse!

Thankfully, John Brainlove sorted it all out as best as it could've been, and has now found a new distributor, Cargo, who actually seem to be competent.

We've been working on new material. We played out a few of the new tunes tonight - (our first gig in Oxford for a long time - the first this year i think) and they seemed to go down pretty well. We're thinking of putting up a few of the new tracks as a download EP to celebrate Mizen Head's availabilty. Watch this space.

We played a set for Last FM at Cargo the other week, and they've now put up some video footage of the gig and an interview they did with Seb.

He's in a very serious mood and rambles on a bit about the nature of art and music. (for the record I should probably mention that Seb is pretty clean living - he'll take a cup of green tea over any caffenated beverage. He doesn't smoke and only rarely drinks alcohol, and only in small quantities then. Just in case you were, er, wondering...).

One of the vids is of a performance of Bugs that I personally like much better than the album version. Anyway, check it all out here:

Dearest Keyboard Fan,

Our latest addition to THE CHOIR is the very fine Alex Wallwork, he's helped us play some banging shows over the summer and is here to stay, hooray! Check out Alex showing off his razor sharp wit with this Opinion Piece he's done on our behalf for Fake DIY:

LOL

In other news, we are playing the wonderful Club Mother Fucker tomorrow (Saturday 12th Sept) at Barden's Boudoir in Dalston and have more shows to announce soon.... Watch this space.

Big love,

It's been a while. We've been up to all sorts since we last updated the blog - some of my personal highlights have included playing Brian Eno's 60th birthday, playing a series of Brainlove shows, and a really odd-but-good gig at the Thai-British summer fair.

Hanging out with Eno was really interesting, we had good chats about the future of music, audio/visual fusion and his pygmy goats. We had a really intersting discussion about his theory that the most interesting future artistic developments will come about from new fusions of music with video and that the 'audio only' paradigm e.g the album format, will become largely a thing of the past.

We talked a bit how video will become integrated into live shows - including how movie theatre pianists in the days of silent films would be interpreting and responding to the picture - jamming their audio along to the video format of the day.

Funnily enough, I some some awesome live performances to film at the Green Man Festival a couple of weeks ago including the fantastic '2001 - A SpaceDub Oddyssey'
performed by Lautrec vs SonVer. It was fascinating to hear the musicians interpreting the imagery, pace and tension fo the film 'on the fly'. As far as the band's concerned, I reckon this could well be 'our sort of thing'. Apparently Seb's great aunt used to be a movie pianst, so we've got the genes for it!

We also discussed how realtime digital image manipulation is only starting to become readily availble to the mass market. We're only beginning to see the power/price ratio of the gear reach an accessable level, so potentially new opportunities to do something interesting will be opening up. We've dabled with films and VJs, but we've never taken it as far as we've wanted too. Any VJs/digital video artists who'd be interested in working with us please get in touch!

There were lots of interesting people at the party - I ended up sitting in a bedouin tent with Imogen Heap (who was lovely) talking about the milky way, contact microphones and badgers - we finished up the night with a mass jam featuring Irial and Darla Eno ..s.

The Brainlove Tour was great fun - highlights including playing Westhill Hall again (village hall-tastic) and the Woolfire festival. The Friday and Saturday at Woolfire was blessed with some of the sunniest, warmest, driest weather all summer, and the atmosphere was great. We danced like idiots to ridiculous (but good) 180bpm techno for a good chunk of the night after we'd played our show. Guy displayed especially awesome dance styles. I also caught a set by our labelmate Pagan Wanderer Lu where Andy was using his Monome for some execllent sample manipulations. I want one.

The Thai-British summer fair was probably one of the weirder gigs of the summer. Imagine a large village fete cross-bred with a Thai cultural show. I'm still slightly unsure why we were even on the bill - but it all turned out fine. We did three shows, including an improv set based on some swift sampling of various classical Thai musicians whilst they were packing up after they'd finished their set.

The weirdness really kicked in for our last set - we were the 'interlude act' for Thai popsters Jonas and Christy. We nipped off to the pub whilst they were doing their first half, imagine our horror to get back on site to hear them performing 'somewhere over the rainbow' to the large, rapturous, crowd. Our fear of how our experimental electronica set was going to go down was high. Turned out that they loved it! Who'd have known.

We've been working on new tunes - can't say too much about this other than I'm quite excited by how things are going.

Mizen Head album launch - you'll (finally) be able to buy it on CD from the shops by the end of the month!

Ady.

I'm currently watching 'Hook'. A cursory glance at imdb tells me that it is not amongst Steven Spielberg's most critically acclaimed work, but that doesn't change it from being one of my top films of all time. It is simply brilliant. Better than ET, anyway. HA.

Back to Keyboard Choir, which is probably the reason you're reading this blog (I hope). We have a new member, his name is Alex and he is ace. We've played a few shows with him so far and he couldn't have fitted in any more naturally. He's currently over at Ady's working on a new tune which, and this is literally hot off the press, is called 'stagger'.

We have nearly completed 'In the heart of the sea' for live performance, and should be playing it 10th May at the Cellar. A demo version of it will be included on a USB stick on the cover of Amelia's magazine which goes out in May, along with a sexy feature of us.

The weekend just gone saw us playing at the George Tavern in Stepney and at the Sanctuary Cafe in Brighton. Both shows were ace, for different reasons. We nearly didn't make the London one for various reasons, but we're glad we did. We were playing alongside a guy from Sweden who goes by the name 'adventure kid' (check him, he's good!) and an MC called 'Verb-T'. Woody couldn't make it, and we forgot Guy's power supply so he had to make do with a MicroKorg. We played Macondo for the first time in ages, and it went well. I'm told that Thinking Won't Help was amazing.

We spent Saturday lazing around Brick lane after a night on Seb's floor during which he tried to mount me and received a punch to the kidneys for his troubles, and being serenaded by Ady's extremely bubbly snoring. GREAT.

Alex drove me and the equipment to Brighton at about 4 and we met up with the others at the venue. Inside the venue (which was otherwise lovely) there was a limiter which cut power to the PA should the volume peak. Luckily we bypassed this problem somewhat by having brought along our own monitors. The promoters (Chris and Kathy, also of support act and previous keyboard choir blog mentionees Power Up!) were very generous and nice to us, providing beer! Junkboy were on first, and played mainly instrumental stuff punctuated by intermittent blasts of vocals and glockenspiels. They were hindered by the limiter somewhat, feeling that they couldn't let loose, but they were great and are well worth a look. Power Up! were next, and having seen them a few times before I thought I knew what to expect, but due to a recent computer crash they were playing mostly new stuff, which was all great, it was the best I'd seen them. I must reiterate that Kathy's vocals remind me of Rachel Goswell, and the beats and textures crafted beneath by Chris made me think of a more playful version of Fuck Buttons(although, being a duo this could be construed as something of a lazy comparison, I can't really think of another reference point so it'll have to do).

Then we played, and with one eye constantly on the limiter, we played well, and Woody had returned so Free Lunch was wheeled out to hit the limiters on a number of occasions. It was fun!

After the show the rest of the band went home(!) and I was well up for a night out, so Greg(of we aeronauts fame), Mr B(of keyboard choir's future visuals fame) and Mo (of being a friend of mine fame) followed Kathy to the Freebut and proceeded to drink nowhere near enough alcohol. We then went to an awesome houseparty and sat on the roof with an accordion, before retiring home just as Joe Calzaghe's head hit the floor in the first round.

The next day we hung around on the beach and looked at expensive instruments in bric-a-brac shops while Mr B and Mo bought sunglasses. Greg dropped me off at reading station and I made my way home. It was a great weekend.

We've got a show (our first in Oxford for SIX MONTHS) on May 10th at the cellar with THEO and WHITE NOISE SOUND. Both of them are brilliant, and we do Ok so come and check it. We've also been added to the bill for the inaugural Stag and Dagger urban festival alongside such greats as The Duke Spirit and Atlas Sound. We're playing with CADENCE WEAPON on May 15th @ Vibe Bar, Brick Lane. No doubt there will be more blogs soon.

"now they dropping and yelling, its a tad bit late, Nate Dogg and Warren G have to REGULATE"

PS: We have had a bit of a loving up from the folks over the 'the line of best fit'. They gave our album 90%! are they insane? possibly, because they also named us their 'new favourite band' and have included us on their May Mixtape which also features music by the Futureheads and Fleet Foxes amongst others.
