On Q Productions presents "Miles & Coltrane: Blue (.)"
ONE NIGHT ONLY Get tickets @ www .carolinatix.org $20 Group rates available for 10 or more.
Miles & Coltrane: Blue (.) is a project that was started in 2005. It was first a conversation between Corey McClure and Q, on how Miles and Coltrane have influenced American music, especially jazz. It then turned into a choreopoem, with the writings of Concrete Generation (Norris Guest, Carlos Robson, c.p.maze, Filmore Johnson, Bluz, Mekkah, Ocean, and Tavis Brunson) experiencing the stories of these men's lives, through poetry, prose, and dialogue. Once the script was edited, we needed a Miles and Coltrane. So Sultan "Omar" El-min signed on to play Miles, and Q plays Coltrane. Then we added in the talents of the amazing dancers Randolph Ward (Miles) and Jhe Russell (Coltrane) from NC Dance Theater, who interpret their experiences through movement. Therefore music was needed, and the Jazzyphat Five piece band was formed headed by Stephen Gordon. The collaboration is rounded out with the art work of God City Collective. These talented group of artists have come together to present a show like non-other. Just like the music, the show can't really be explained, like the music you just have to listen, and in this instance, come see, Miles & Coltrane: Blue (.)

Current mood: exhausted
I had made 2 decisions as to my blogging criteria. One was that the title of all my blogs would be quotes from Queen Sheba because she always got something dope to say. The other was I'd only blog on my personal page. I'm changing the 2nd for now because...I can.
It's 4:09am and I REALLY should be sleeping. I've gotten very little sleep over the past couple of weeks being on the road so much. Southern Fried in Tallahassee (which was AWESOME!), then teaching a creative writing workshop at a summer camp in Charleston, SC (life changing experience...I hope for them...DEFINITELY for me) to attending the graduation of one of my best friends. In other words, I've been busy. The weeks ahead look to be just as, if not more, busy which brings me to now. Sitting at my desk at home watching Fight Club...again. I took a sleeping pill but it hasn't kicked in yet. My cell phone has maybe 2 bars of life in it so I decided to burn it up typing this blog. So here goes.
2008 has been a great year. I'm doing what I love and called to do for a living. I'm not broke (not balling just not broke regardless of what DJ Flemingo says...LOL!) I have a lot of great projects on the table that I am blessed to be a apart of and my cat still likes me.
But I asked myself just a few minutes ago "Tavis, how is TAVIS doing? Not the minister, not the artist, not the brother, son, friend, nephew, frat brother, slammaster, Concrete Poet or sex symbol (sorry, couldn't resist that last one!), but just Tavis." And my answer to myself was as follows:
"I feel like I'm about to die. I don't WANT to die, but thinking about it happening doesn't move me one way or the other. I don't feel well at all right now and I'm used to dealing with that with my health issues, but today is different. I'm tired of being used to dealing with it. There is so much to do and only one lifetime to accomplish these things and I feel like I'm always playing catch up. It hurts to breathe. It hurts to walk. It hurts to perform. My God, it hurts to love.
People who don't know me and ask if I'm with someone, I tell them yeah, I'm dating my career. Its a cute answer to try and explain my 'dedication' to what I do. But sadly, I believe its a mask of an answer. I could very well balance my career and personal life (not just talking dating but personal life overall) but I choose not to. And the reason I choose not to is because I simply don't...have...the...energy. I have friends who've needed me to be there for them and I simply haven't. I've neglected some very special people b/c I'm "busy." I mean really, how hard is a phone call? And I can list a plethora of excuses, but they would be just that...excuses. So then, I find myself in need of a recharge and I turn to...who? The ones I trust the most to go to...I've been too busy for them when they called or texted me. And I'm not apologizing because it is what it is and I'm of the opinion that apologies or saying I'm Sorry don't initiate change. And that's what I want. That's what I need. Change. (no this is not turning into an Obama blog. LOL!) Something has got to change. How is Tavis doing? Tavis is tired of being tired. Can we change that?"
Well, as you can see, I'm really longwinded, even when talking to myself. But its all good. Sometimes ya just gotta let it out. So I said all that to say this. Please keep me in your prayers that God may give me the strength to not only do what He called me to do, but to be a better friend. People need me to be there for them...I need to be there for people...and I'm f*****g up the whole thing by not doing my part.
I'll end this with a haiku:
If Death comes knocking We have a lot to discuss But I can't leave now.
Keeping you all in my prayers as I hope you'll do for me,
Tavis
