Transmission BlogMachine Records hums along with shows at Schubas and Uncommon Ground 02.12.2007 in Concert by Craig I think of Machine Records as a Chicago label despite the fact that they're based in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. They've signed both local talent like Martha Berner and national acts like The Apparitions. Confirming my assumptions about Machine Records and the windy city is the fact that two of their artists have a busy week coming up in Chicago. On Friday, February 16 Martha Berner opens up for Toby Lightman at Schubas and all month long Hayward Williams plays Wednesday nights at 8pm at Uncommon Ground. Martha's debut cd was well received last year, which led to a new ep which came out just last month. Her recorded output separates itself from the more pedestrian singer-songwriter offerings by featuring her husky vocals, complex arrangements and literate lyrics. Here's her song "Down and Out In San Francisco" from the Ten Tiny Little Pieces ep. [mp3]: Down and Out in San Francisco Martha Berner Hayward Williams resides in Wisconsin and has been mentored by the great young singer-songwriter Jeffrey Foucault. On record his earnest folk often takes a drastic turn towards grungy rock or paint-by-numbers alt-country but this month of Wednesday's should showcase his softer, folkier side. Hayward William's Machine Records debut, Another Sailor's Dream, comes out March 7.

What Good Luck Sounds Like by Erika J. Bock
The story of a lot of bands often begins with the same overwrought tale: A group of school friends get together in a basement, learn to play various instruments and form a band. But in the case of the Good Luck Joes, thatâs where the similarity ends. The pop/alt rock group, which consists of lead vocalist Andrew Martin, keyboardist Andrew Citron, lead guitarist Andrew Krei (whose father, Ken, manages the group), bassist Joe Scheltema and drummer Peterson Goodwyn, commanded the attention of local musician, composer and producer Peter Buffet, and shortly thereafter hooked up with Los Angeles-based producer Chad Fischer for their latest release, What Do You Think Of That Noise? I sat down with Andrew M. and Joe on a cool August evening at a lounge in the Third Ward to discuss their music, tour mishaps and the Milwaukee music scene.
Noize: How did you all meet and start playing together?
Andrew M.: We all lived in the same neighborhood when we were in eighth grade, and we got together to play a song at the East Grand Rapids Middle School talent show. We practiced âTwist and Shoutâ for a month and only got second place. We had this old-school microphone that would shock us when weâd use it.
N: What ties you together as a band, musically speaking?
AM: We all have such different musical tastes, but in the end, we want to make music that entertains, and is enjoyable to listen to, without compromising our artistic ambitions. We want to make music we can be proud of.
N: How has your sound morphed over the years?
AM: The album we made in Andrew Kreiâs basement is almost laughable at times. Just kids trying to make rock and roll history. But weâve matured and the music has gotten better with practice, like all things. Chad Fischer, who worked on our last album, produced tracks for the Garden State movie soundtrack and he goes for a big âwall of soundâ feel. Weâd really be willing to record anywhere with pretty much anyone, just because you can make lemonade out of any situation.
N: So tell me some entertaining tour stories. [laugher]
AM: Thereâs always some guy at each show thatâs like, giving us advice. Like, âThis is what you gotta do in this situation,â giving us business or touring pointers. And that guy always âhas this friendâ that we should hook up with, like, âIâve got this friend and you should let him manage you ...â This guy we met was telling us crazy stories like, âI invented techno music in Detroit,â and all this crazy stuff. And then he said, âYou guys better be careful in L.A.! Itâll eat you alive!â but at that point weâd already been out there twice. [laughs] We had this little acoustic guitar that we brought on tour, it was like one of those backpacking guitars, and we all swore that this was going to be the guitar that we write all of our hits on.
Joe Scheltema: Like weâd go out into the woods and the hits would come pouring out.
AM: Exactly. So we were packing up our gear in Texas, and we were all in the truck with the trailer in back, and all of a sudden we hear this loud crunch.
JS: It was that guitar. We ran it over. That was the end of the dream of writing on tour.
N: You all live together in a house in Bay View and you tour with each other. Being on the road in a band 24/7 and then living together, itâs got to be trying. How do you keep the peace?
AM: [laughs] Weâve learned not to talk to each other in the truck.
JS: Exactly.
AM: We all sort of zone out to try and keep the peace. We literally avoid talking to each other.
JS: It works, though.
N: So is the band house insane? Youâve got your band in one place, practice space in the basement, is it sort of âReal Worldâ-ish? [laughter]
AM [sarcastically]: Oh yeah, itâs really easy to get the girls back to Bay View.
JS: Yeah, itâs one non-stop party!
N: When should we expect a new release from you?
AM: Weâre working on an EP for the end of the year. Weâll probably be in the studio starting in October or November. Weâre recording songs that we already play live, so if you come out to our shows youâll hear them.
N: What would be your dream venue?
AM: Madison Square Garden ... big time, baby!
N: Is there anything I havenât asked you about that youâd like to express to Milwaukee readers?
AM: Well, weâre learning that Milwaukee is a cover-band town. People wanna get drunk and hear âPour Some Sugar On Me.â I wish people would really start giving local bands a shot. You might not hear a song you know, but you might like it anyway. Thereâs so much out there to discover. I mean, at one point, the band you hear on the radio now was a local band, yâknow? Take a chance. Pay the cover charge, support local music.
The Good Luck Joes play Thursday, Sept. 21 at the UWM Gasthaus and Saturday, Sept. 30 at Mad Planet with Tommy Keene and Stall.

National Tour Featuring: Martha Berner , Arrica Rose and Julie Moffitt with special guest support Tour Dates: http://www.myspace.com/natashabishoppresents MARTHA BERNER
"... one of indie's finest talents." Toronto Metro
With a wellspring of captivating songs that dig deep into the soul of American roots music, while also interjecting a distinct modern rock flavor, singer/songwriter Martha Berner has successfully melded old and new into a timeless collection of indie folk-rock on her full-length debut album entitled "this side of yesterday."
Martha has been creating quite a buzz since "this side of yesterday" was recently released - garnering a wealth of press accolades both nationally and abroad, while at the same time being embraced by college, AAA and satellite radio throughout the country with her first single, "A Town Called Happiness."
Having resided in the exotic locales of Thailand, Alaska, Israel, the Virgin Islands and San Francisco, the now-Chicago-based musician has been captivating audiences worldwide with her warm voice, natural delivery and earthy performance.
ARRICA ROSE
Best described as melodic indie-rock with a hint of alt-country, Arrica Rose conveys a wisdom beyond her years with timeless songs, insightful lyrics, and a "voice that has the ability to make your heart stop" (Beren Huett, Performer Magazine).
Arrica Rose was born and raised in lovely Los Angeles, California where she and the dOt dOt dOts, are currently based. After growing-up playing with indie-rock bands such as Uxby and The Red Light District, Rose decided to try a solo venture. The first album she released was recorded on her bedroom floor - a self-titled EP that combined elements of folk, blues and rock n' roll. Her next EP - THE TONE BANK - was recorded in her closet (a walk-in) and inspired by a miniature keyboard and a drum sampler.
Finally Arrica headed into the studio where she engineered and produced AUTO-PILOT - a 5 song EP which garnered a wealth of glowing reviews. Complete with electric & acoustic guitars, bass, drums, lap steel, and organ, it was this recording that solidified the presence of her beloved band (Abby Kincaid-lead guitar, Ryan Brown-drums, Jason Mezilis-bass) and led her to producer Larry Crane (Elliott Smith, The Decemberists, Sleater-Kinney). Together Crane and Rose produced PEOPLE LIKE US (pOprOck records 2006), the bands highly anticipated full-length release that is now creating its own buzz. With mysterious & intriguing lyrics that keep you coming back for more (Radio Mike, Live365) and a molasses sweet slightly rasping croon that has more than 20 odd years of pain in it (Splendid Magazine), Rose is equally at home singing heart-wrenching ballads as well as more driven indie-rock tunes.
Whether performing acoustic with just her guitar or electric with the ...'s, Arrica Rose has been consistently charming audiences with her intimate, yet powerful live performance. In the words of A.J. Charron of Guitar Noise "Arrica Rose is a totally amazing artist...she does possess that particular and peculiar something that great artists possess."
Oh yes and the obligatory list of influences. In no particular order Arrica Rose sites...'Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The Beatles, Mazzy Star, The Red House Painters, The Lemonheads, The Rolling Stones, Three-Mile Pilot, Frank Sinatra, Neko Case, Patti Smith, Gram Parsons, Glen Campbell, Elliott Smith, Lucinda Williams, The Cure, The Shins, New Order, Fugazi, Elvis, Tom Waits, Iron and Wine, Calexico, The Andrew Sisters, The Care Bears (they put out a great x-mas album).'
JULIE MOFFITT
Her music has been described as Sheryl Crow meets Fiona Apple sultry chick rock. Her sound is intimate, musical memoirs expressed through piano, guitar, and a warm voice that ranges from vulnerable to vibrant. Julie recognizes that the uncertainty and change in her own life are universal, and her songs are at turns melancholy or optimistic, but always reflective and honest.
Julie grew up playing the piano, spending hours alone with her sheet music after school. Her early influences ranged from Andrew Lloyd Weber to Journey, and as she played and sang her way through school concerts, competitions and theatrical productions, hers became a household name in that small Midwestern town. After 6 years of classical vocal training, 8 years of children's theater, and 13 years in a town that felt like anything but home, she escaped to Los Angeles and the University of Southern California. Digging deeply into jazz, blues and classic rock, she spent her college years studying John Coltrane and Bill Evans, breaking hearts and finding her own heart broken once too often. Between the endless stretches of desert highway and the rolling Pacific, she committed it all to the haunting lyrics and addictive melodies that fill her debut album, 'everything I never asked for,' recorded in Milwaukee with Mike Hoffmann (The Verve Pipe, Willy Porter) and released in February 2005.
'everything I never asked for' found its way to Burst Records creative director Daniel Holter in July; by August, Julie had signed on as a Burst artist. She recently completed recording a 5-song EP with Burst, enlisting the talents of pros like bassist Dave Marotta (Adam Sandler, Manhattan Transfer), drummer John Ferraro (Carly Simon, Barry Manilow, Eddie Van Halen) and pianist Chris Mosher (Sixpence None the Richer).
Since the release of 'everything I never asked for,' Julie has been featured on radio stations throughout southeastern Wisconsin, including WLZR's Local Licks and NPR / WUWM's "At 10," and across the country, including the Standard and Pours station in Dallas and KUGR in Green River, Wyoming. She has also appeared on the WTMJ Channel 4 news, journeyed back to Los Angeles to headline the Chick Singer Night Anniversary Show at Tangier, and in March, she headed down to Austin, TX, for her first appearance at SXSW. This fall, she'll be heading out on tour to promote 'The Stolen EP.'
