Current mood:  exhausted
What's up punks? Sorry for the extended radio silence on our end. My wife and I had a baby girl a few weeks ago, which is really exciting, and more than a little overwhelming. Paint It Black will be taking a little break while I figure out fatherhood and spend some concentrated time at home with my family. In the meantime I'm going to start posting a regular blog about music and parenting. Check it out and let us know what you think. And have no fear, we are still writing new songs and figuring out what we can pull off in 2010.
This is the link for the blog:

What's up punks? I'm writing to encourage everyone with a facebook account to connect with us there. If you don't have a facebook account, please consider creating one and following what's going on with PIB that way. You can find our FB page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/PAINT-IT-BLACK/9617459324 or connect to it directly from our myspace. we've become increasingly frustrated with myspace, as our inbox clogs with spam and 75% of our friend requests come from t-shirt companies and booking and promotions people looking for advertising. It's becoming more about marketing and less about communicating with fellow music-obsessives and that's generally an uncomfortable place for us to be. So we've decided that facebook is currently the platform of choice. My wife and I had a baby girl a few weeks ago, which is really exciting, Paint It Black is taking a little break while I figure out fatherhood and spend some concentrated time at home with my family. In the meantime I'm going to start posting a regular blog both on the PIB facebook page. Enjoy. And have no fear, we are still writing new songs and figuring out what we can pull off in 2010. thanks for listening.
take care-

Greetings Fellow Punks,
We've been home from the United Kingdom for a week or so and as we readjust to drinking coffee NOT from Caffee Nero (Ultimo!) and once again hearing the beautiful music that is the Philadelphian accent (Go Phils!), we are here with an efficient missive regarding some of our British (radio)activity that is just now seeing broadcast. You see, after flying across the Atlantic and not sleeping a wink, we decided to drop by the BBC's studios at Maida Vale (previous home to just about every classic Peel Session you can think of) and record four songs for Radio 1 as well as a dreadfully sleep-deprived interview where we decided to attempt to slag off everyone from Muse to Dizzee Rascal to Speech Debelle.

And, lucky you (and them!), it's been featured on this week's BBC Radio 1 Punk Show with Mike Davies (one can rightfully assume that the members of Muse are reliably glued to their radios every Tuesday at 2am)! As such, we thankfully made it through the entire tour without getting stabbed by anyone from So Solid Crew and now you can hear it in all its glory. We are told you can listen on Sirius Radio in the USA, but we'll be damned if we know when or how.  Best to simply listen via the BBC Radio 1 Website any time between now and next Tuesday - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/mikedavies/

We'll be back soon with a few little bits and pieces (and also a desperate plea for you to buy the leftover merch we have from the UK tour).  But, for now...enjoy!

Love,
PAINT IT BLACK

Thu Sep 17 / Guildford, England @ Guildford Youth Center
Fri Sep 18 / Kingston, England @ The Peel
Sat Sep 19 / Leeds, England @ Joseph's Well

Hey Punks,
Our friends at AbsolutePunk.net have posted a stream of the first track from the Fat Wreck Chords EP (being released next week and named "Surrender").  This song is called "Sacred" and here's what Yemin had to say about it:

What’s up punks? Thanks for taking a couple of minutes out of your busy day to check out this song.  It’s about getting older and feeling more vulnerable, physically and emotionally, and about the self-imposed delusions people sometimes create to keep from experiencing that vulnerability.  I feel like we’ve written at least 20 songs about how hard it is for us humans to learn from our mistakes. This is yet another one.  I guess we should get over it already.

Listen to the song here:

http://www.absolutepunk.net/artists/showlink.php?do=showdetails&l=21722

(Lyrics are as follows:
I used to feel safe, oblivious to the mess I left in my wake. Now I try to give more than I take. But there’s more at stake than the nights I spent awake. It turns out I’ve got a selfish streak, and I repeat the same mistakes. Seconds, hours, minutes, days.  I feel it slipping away. Did I mention that I’m fucking scared? I can feel the decay, but I can’t say it caught me unawares.  New bruises, new pills. Fate will not fight fair; the clock will not stand still.  “Ask me why & I’ll spit in your eye.” We’re all Still Ill. Today I felt the time slipping away. We’ll push the fear out of the way.)

As you know, the red vinyl for the 7" sold out in a matter of hours, but you can still order the classic (and classy!) black vinyl from Fat Wreck Chords for the time being and we'll have a limited quantity of green vinyl copies at those shows in September...but really, don't sleep:

http://www.fatwreck.com/store/band/96

Let us know what you think of the song and we'll see you all at THIS IS HARDCORE this weekend!

Love,
PAINT IT BLACK

Greeting Fellow Punks!
We're really excited because we're on the verge of releasing our 2nd 7" EP of the summer.  Just wanted to let everyone know that our friends at Fat Wreck Chords have opened the gates for pre-ordering the new one, titled "Surrender".  And for you vinyl collectors, we have a special treat:  In addition to the standard black vinyl, there will be a limited number of records on red vinyl, available only through mailorder from Fat Wreck, as well as a limited number of records on green vinyl, available only from us at our shows in September.   We won't be playing a traditional record release show this time around, but September will find us playing 4 shows with our heroes, Chicago legends NAKED RAYGUN, followed by a two-week tour of the UK with our friends CEREMONY. This year just keeps getting better.  Seriously.

More information about the new 7" is available here:

http://www.fatwreck.com/store/band/96

As always, thanks for listening, and thanks for your support!

HOMESICK
Instead of "welcome home," you looked at me and asked "How's this gonna end?"
When the wind beats against our hollow bones, we're only forced to run for shelter again.
We're staring at different stars in the same night sky, and it's different songs that get us through the day, but that's OK.
Will we break or will we bend?
Welcome to the year of more fear, let's not pretend.
And then you wonder why we slow down under the weight of what this world demands.
I used to fear the Bomb, now I fear my fellow man.
I'm afraid of what's in my head, hoping I'll choose hope instead.
All this caution makes us reckless and there are egos that need to be fed.
We're still ugly and we're still free. We're still preoccupied with Word War III
My skin is a map of minor impacts.  There is beauty in defeat when we get back on our feet.

At first glance this might seem like a breakup song, but nothing could be farther from the truth.  This is about the stress that a relationship is subject to when two people have to spend long periods of time apart. It's
about getting older, feeling wiser but more vulnerable, and learning to balance marriage and work with touring and making music. It's about balancing your responsibility to your partner with your responsibility to yourself, and realizing that those things are less different than you thought. It's about the beauty and privilege of making music, and the wear and tear that people deal with playing every day and being far from home, and both the positive and negative impact of that life on mind, body, and heart.
It's about realizing that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
It's about learning from our mistakes.
It's about being an adult and still being a punk.
It's about being in love.

Man can't live on politics alone.  Thanks to Gorilla Biscuits for the musical inspiration.

I hope everyone's having an amazing summer.  Thanks to Cold World and the Wilkes-Barre scene for showing us a great time last Wednesday.

Thanks for listening,
Dan / P. I.B.

What's up punks? Any of you who have been following our posts here over the last few years know that I've been ambivalent about explaining the lyrics to Paint It Black songs, preferring instead to let people come to their own conclusions. I wrote explanations to accompany the songs on our first album, but I don't think I've done so since.  There was considerable debate over this when "New Lexicon" came out last year, with a lot of people clamoring for more clarification about the meaning of the lyrics, while I kind of sat on the fence, concerned about saying too much for fear that any explanations would interfere with people finding their own meanings in the lyrics and connecting to the songs in their own way.  Well I realized we've always had a policy of being as honest and open as possible, and its always been my belief that music is about communication. That being said, explaining what I intended to convey with the lyrics is a part of that honesty and communication.  I've also realized that a lot of people download the music and never see the cover art or the lyric sheet, and I want to make sure that everyone who listens to these songs has access to the meaning, which when all is said and done, is the most important part. I'm going to try to post one song per week over the summer:

SALEM
They're running their mouths about original sin again.
Somehow we're similar simians, on a steady diet of carcinogens.
We'll be the weathermen warning of the black skies ahead.
Broadcasting live from the City of the Dead.
The forecast is for hail, locusts, and falling anvils
bringing common sense and science to a standstill.
Watch as witches burn, fanatics setting fire to the foundation.
Playing duck season/rabbit season with our children's education.
The barbarians are at the gates, that's my diagnosis.
If they make it past the barricades before the drawbridge closes,
there will be no cause to celebrate, there will be no throwing roses.
The same racist god that sanctioned truncheons and hoses
at Selma, the god of bloodied scalps and broken noses,
of back alley abortions, and voided civil unions.
So remember this the next time you're kneeling for communion:
They want us locked down and mute,
and they're still burning books so why not follow suit,
and set fire to their treatises and stale superstitions.
My intelligent design: No submission...

So this one's fairly obvious. It's a tirade about the increasing influence of the christian right in american politics and cultural discourse.   The fact that there's even a conversation about including creationism in public school science curriculum is disturbing on so many levels.  Conservative christians would have us believe that "intelligent design" (which is simply biblical creationism thinly disguised as scientific theory), is as valid an explanation for human origin as evolution, and that evolution should not be given precedence in the classroom because its “only a theory.”  Evolution is “only a theory” because we would need to travel back in time to prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt, and it’s a theory that most scientists agree upon.  So if people want their kids to learn creationism in science class, that’s their business, and they can pay for parochial school.  But the separation of church and state is one of the central tenets of American political doctrine and is fundamental to our way of life, and these attempts to erode that separation are dangerous and a threat to our freedom and happiness.  Religion already exerts subtle pressure on our lawmakers, judges and other political leaders, either through their own religious backgrounds or pressure from their constituents, but as soon as christianity is allowed to gain explicit influence over politics and policy we are fucked, because biblical morality is so often not appropriate for modern circumstances (see Pope Benedict’s recent trip to Africa in which he discouraged the use of condoms to stop the spread of AIDS).  The line about god may offend some people, but it’s a reminder that some of the greatest atrocities in the history of our species, and of our country, have been committed by people that used their religious faith and doctrine to justify and validate cruel and oppressive behavior, such as lynching, gay bashing, and the murder of doctors who perform legal abortions.  Truly holy and glorious conduct, is it not?
I want to stress that I don’t have a problem with religious faith in and of itself; if people prefer to have a structure for their spirituality that’s their business.  But the limit of my tolerance is reached the moment that religion is used to justify judgmental finger-pointing and immoral action.
One of the primary joys of writing lyrics is the opportunity to have fun with language.  Alliteration and rhyme are part of that, but reference and allusion create the opportunity to invoke parts of our history to help tell a story.  That’s why the Bugs Bunny reference is there, and the Clash , Inside Out, and El-P references as well.  There are also oblique references to two Philadelphia bands that I adore, just to give props where props are due.  Anyway, thanks for paying attention.  Any comments or feedback is appreciated.  Always keep your eyes open. Oh yeah, and be on the lookout for a secret PIB show in the next week.
