Sweet Hollow Drive Interview

Sweet Hollow Drive Interview

Q: I know you just released your new album The Perfect Blue in October, but are there any plans to release more material in 2009?

A: Right now its just me (Danny the Drummer) in front of the computer so I will try to answer these
questions on behalf of the group. As a band, we’re always writing new material. Or at least we try to do so as often as possible. During the school semester we only have a chance to meet up when we have shows since Alex goes away to school. There are some songs in the works and we’d ideally want to get them out as soon as possible to share with everyone and let them know that we’re still working. Depending on money and time, we’d love to release at least a short EP by the end of the year. If anything, we should have some demo recordings or a digital release up within the near future.

Q: After reading a couple of reviews about your new album, the most common response seems to be along the line of "Sweet Hollow Drive's new album rocks more." Was the transition to a somewhat "harder" style natural or did you specifically try and alter your sound for the album?

A: I think by “rocks more” our fans mean that our songs have simply evolved and matured to have a little extra kick to them, whether its one of our pop-rock tunes or a heavier one. For those who have been with us from the beginning, they see how we mature as a band the most. Every band matures with experience and that’s just what is happening to us. But whatever we did on the album was certainly natural. Most larger names I’m sure sit down and say “okay lets write an album” but we basically said “Lets write new songs and put the best ones on an album.”

Q: And along those same lines what style can we expect in the future from Sweet Hollow Drive?

A: Well we’ve been told to capture a few different styles in our music (on The Perfect Blue) and we like to think that we have something for everyone. “Running Away” is heavier and melodic, “Disclaimer” is poppy and upbeat, and “We’re Not In Toto Anymore, Kansas” is raw and totally different from everything else. A future album of ours would probably continue to contain tracks of many different styles, but a similar SHD sound. The new songs we’re writing now already show quite a bit of diversity in their native genres.

Q: Are you planning on touring in support of your new album?

A: This past winter we put together a short tour over our break from school. It lasted 2 ½ weeks and was a lot of work to book by ourselves but it was a lot of fun. Meeting new fans on the road and hanging out with out of state bands was a nice change of pace for us. Best part is, we did sell some albums and came home with a profit! If time allows, there will definitely be at least a series of short regional tours over the summer, if not, an entire east coast tour to further expand our name.

Q: Just browsing around and looking at your guys' profiles online and the response you've gotten from your album it seems like you don't necessarily follow the same path as the majority of bands. You seem more about the music and less about the phony persona that so many bands try and spin to gain popularity. What's your take on that?

A: As much as certain things other bands do might work for us, and not saying we’re entirely original, but we have been brought up on trying to avoid the whole “me too” thing. It’s extremely difficult but we are about the music and also about trying to form one huge family with our friends and fans. Fans usually turn into friends and our shows are big reunions. I also try to respond to every myspace comment and every purevolume message personally and form some dialogue. Sure popularity is great and it’s something we need if our music is going to be known, but why not try to do that as Danny, Alex, Rob and Mikey.

Here’s the final five, they’re just a few random questions that will help readers and fans get to know you a little better:

Q: Favorite song to play live?
A: Original; Combo Meals & Steering Wheels. Cover; Toss up between our own versions of Hey Jude, Hey There Delilah, and Rock Show.

Q: Favorite hobby outside of music?
A: Graphic Design, business marketing, anything I can use towards our music.

Q: Craziest thing you‘ve ever done?
A: Probably go to Canada. Ask Rob about that one…

Q: Song/artist no one knows you listen to?
A: Love is the Right Place – Bryan White? haha

Q: Hamburger or Veggie Burger?
A: Although I’m sympathetic towards the whole vegan cause, you can’t
Beat a good ol’ burger.

Here are [all of] the [correct] lyrics to all of our songs so you can sing along!

1. Intro

Can we stop running away from
Can we stop running
Can we stop
Can we stop
Running away
From you

2. Running Away

When all of the smoke and the fire burns out
(Will you wait for us?)
There's nothing left here in the shadow of doubt
(We need you here)
We'll wait for you to come so
All of this can mend

We need this hope
We need this life
We need you here
Everything's broken
Without your love

All of the world it just screams the word fake
(There's nothing more)
These lives are so empty come fill them and take…them
(Cause we lost it all)
We'll wait for you to come so
Everything can end

Can we stop running away from
Can we stop running
Can we stop
Can we stop
Running away
From you

3. Homesick

Sometimes the first place I need to be
Is the last place I'd call home
Or the last place I'd feel comfortable
(Or maybe I don't know)
2, 3, 4 times I've tried
To convince myself that I was right
But all along my voice sang out the same old song

Can you hear me scream
Out over the silence that awakens me
To everything that's anything
That's going in the wrong direction
Anything that's everything I thought that I could fix

Sometimes the way that I come off
Is not the way I feel
Or maybe it's what I'm thinking
(So maybe my lips are sealed)
2, 3, 4 times I've tried
To convince myself that I was right
But all along I fell right back into the ground

Can you hear me scream
Out over the silence that awakens me
To everything that's anything
That's going in the wrong direction
Anything that's everything I thought that I could fix

Please take me home...

Can you hear me scream
Out over the silence that awakens me
To everything that's anything
That's going in the wrong direction
Anything that's everything I thought that I could fix

Well maybe I'm just a little bit homesick
I want to be with the ones who care
One day, maybe I'll go home
I'm waiting for my big escape

4. The Pain You Give

She's a liar
And it's tearing apart her skin
Caught in this fire
And too recluse to let you in

And in this this break of silence
Where the walls can forget their names
All is tagged destructive
(All her tact is struck dead)
But she can change her ways

I'm holding on from the break of a rose
And the thorn that resembles her skin
You're too bold for a bleeding heart
It takes the pain you give anyway

She's abrasive
And it's tearing apart her name
She's inconclusive
And that's what keeps her so far away

Take a look at yourself
What do you see
An empty cave could be filled
It could be…

She's a liar

5. Disclaimer

I'll get this
Off my chest
And leave you
To the rest

Maybe
We'll bury these open wounds
I'd rather watch us heal a bit
Than watch us learn to deal with it
Cause I know
I'd miss this if it passed
So here I am apologizing
Sometimes it's hard but I'm still trying

One more chance to get things right
Means two more people that I just might
Anger cause of something I've done
(Maybe you're right maybe you've won maybe)
One more thing that I'd like to say means
Two more people that I just may
Make amends with or better friends with
(I'm sorry if it's my fault)
Woah, yeah!

There's a few things I've come to realize
Humility comes with not one but a few tries
You know I'll try it, you know I will
I'm sorry if you're angry still
But here's a few things I need to know
Where's my arrogance to go
Why was I cursed with that little thing
And last but not least are you still listening
An awkward silence, a slight disturbance,
A stupid reason, a dumber purpose,
Most of all, a lame excuse,
A dimmer bulb and a darker burnt out fuse

6. The Last Time

Do you feel like the last time you felt home
Was broken down on the side of the road
Where the only thing that saved you
Wasn't really help at all
Well…Wake up arise o sleeper
Your shades of grey aren't any weaker
Than years ago when everything went down, down, down

Do you feel like you're falling
Do you feel like you're down
Like everything you worked for
Just stumbled to the ground
You can say to me
Anything you want
Because the only thing I want
Is for you to be set free

Do you feel like the last time you were welcome
Was no where to be found
And the only thing that saved you
Isn't saving you right now
Wake up arise o sleeper
Your shades of grey aren't any weaker
Than years ago when everything went down

Why do you run away from help
Why do you do this to yourself
When you still feel the way you felt
(2x)

7. Combo Meals and Steering Wheels

Well lately I've been thinking about the past
Looking in retrospect
And trying to see the reality
Does this world have more for me?
And I'm trying not to break
Or make one more harsh mistake
I want you to know that I won't just go
Won't sit back and say

Woah
(Gotta keep it together)
Woah
(Gotta keep it together)

I'm telling you this now
Before it gets too far
I'll try to get back now
I'm taking you back now to what this was before
I'm telling you this now
It's all been done before
I'll try to get back now
I'm taking you back now to what this was before

Well lately I've been wondering who's to blame
Or is it all the same?
The reality I don't wanna see is
Maybe it's just me
I'll try to run away
And I'll hear your calm voice say
That you want me to know
That you won't just go
You won't sit back and let go

As I close my eyes
I'll let you in
I'll never know
I'll never know
(Never know)

8. For a Lack of Better Words

There's not a better word that exists
That describes what happened to you
Than tragedy just a life
Young and new
Not 'just' a life but a human soul
We watched you crack, break, deteriorate
One more being taken early on his own shoulders

And it feels like
I should've sent you a message
Long before this was fathomed in your
Brain's dead
And I can't think straight
It's almost two years but my
Mind still fears the thought of losing
Someone like this

There's not a better phrase that exists
To describe all the pain that we felt
Than at a loss for words
As we lie
And melt
We're at a loss for words there's no question
And it's still up in arms in my mind
Was this meant to be the end
Was it really your time?

And it feels like
Yesterday was February
5th to be exact I know that
Something must've snapped in your
Mind's gone
And I can't think straight
It's almost a decade since we first played
In my front lawn with nerf guns
When we were friends once

When you and I were alive (8x)

9. Break

I'm a wishful thinker they say
I'd like to start the flow
I'll move a mountain if you give me the chance
I'm ready to go (2x)

I'm an open vessel I say
I'd like to start the change
I'll move a mountain if you give me the chance
Take me from this place

If you give me wings I swear I'll fly away
I'm thankful for the time that's given to me
I'll lead the simple life praying to the north
That someday soon I'll find myself
Doing something more
I wanna break away
Something more

Stuck in this hole with these walls all around
How can I escape from this miserable ground
Consuming all that I wanted to be
Please reach your hand down and break me free
I wanna get out and change a soul
I wanna get out and make a change whole
How can I do it if I'm trapped in this place
And my whole life is just
Fading away

10. We're Not in Toto Anymore, Kansas

Take the best part of me
And tear it to shreds
Make sure that I won't forget a thing
The day could be brighter
But I'm not complaining

Maybe that's the problem
(Maybe it's too far gone too much to fix)
Maybe that's the issue it's too
Easy for me to slip away (slip away)

If you break me
I will reconstruct, rebuild
If you break me down just one more time
I'll only push back stronger
So go ahead and break me
I need the hope and motivation
Go ahead and break me down just one more time just one more

Take the worst part of me
And tear it into shreds
Make sure that I won't forget a thing
I need this despair to make sure I
Keep my head on straight

Keep my head on straight I'll keep my head on. (repeated)

11. The Perfect Blue

I ask myself
What can help me to breathe again
I ask myself
What could help me to see again
I'm walking through grey scales looking for the color, my friend
I ask myself
Where's the vibrancy I've heard about
I ask myself
Is it worth it to live without
I'm walking through an uninspired field without a doubt

And when I run to you
I will have thought things through
I know I'll find something new
The perfect blue

I turn to you
What can help me to learn again
I'm asking you
What can help me to move again
I'm walking through the darkness looking for the light, my friend
I turn to you
There's the vibrancy I've heard about
I turn to you
It's not worth it to live without
I was walking through an uninspired field without a doubt

A safe haven for whatever need be
It's not the first place I'll run
But the last place I'll see
Your grace has found me
And I have found you
The perfect blue

After a grueling 7 months in the studio, Sweet Hollow Drive has finally delivered their long awaited debut album, The Perfect Blue. The first half of the album is largely tracks of the previous two EPs, all having been re-recorded, mixed and brought back in forms that, while recognizable, may surprise longtime fans. The second half of the album is mostly new material, and Sweet Hollow Drive took this as an opportunity to stretch their sound, both with the touching ballad "For Lack of Better Words" and the experimental sounding "We're Not in Toto Anymore, Kansas". The Perfect Blue provides the perfect mix of old and new, bringing back music older fans love while showing Sweet Hollow Drive has grown as a band, and their newer sound reflects it.

The Perfect Blue rocks a little harder than earlier Sweet Hollow Drive efforts, and for those of you new to the band, that's a good thing. These guys have always had a knack for soft bridges; and seem to love to have louder guitar and drum parts suddenly drop out, letting gentler melodies come through. Songs are well-constructed works, and its clear the musical foundations of this band are very strong. In fact, musically the whole album is very strong. There is no doubt that there's talent here. The only notable problem is that sometimes on tracks such as "Homesick", the vocals get lost trying to keep up with the rest of the band. This is hardly a monumental failing, as the same impeccable drumming that buries the vocals on "Homesick" make compelling listening in itself.

Overall, on a scale from 1 to 10, The Perfect Blue comes in at a solid 8. Tracks like "The Pain You Give" and "Disclaimer" stand out as future classics, and with one or two exceptions, there isn't a weak track to be found. As a debut album, The Perfect Blue not only provides more polished tracks old time fans can love, but a catchy sound that will surely bring more fans in months to come. One thing is certain: Sweet Hollow Drive is here to stay.

A safe haven for whatever need be
Not the first place I'll run but the last place I'll see
The perfect blue
This is the middle C
The only flawless thing in all the world
This blindfold in my eyes unfurled
The perfect blue

And now I run to you
I know I've thought things through
I know I've found something new
The perfect blue

Grace has found me
And I have found you

Introduce yourself [name, age, role, favorite car]

Okay, well I'm sitting with Kevin and Alex too.

Okay, cool.

I'm Danny, the drummer for Sweet Hollow Drive. I'm 20 years old, and I don't really have a favorite car, but I have a favorite motorcycle...an MV Augusta.

Oh, you bike! That's cool.

Yep, a little hobby I developed from my father as well as my love for music. (haha)

I read you played drums since you were 5?

Yeah, just about. I started pots and pans at like 3. I listened to a bunch of classic rock growing up, got a snare drum and bongos and then eventually a full kit. Upgrading ever since.

Awesome, I want to play the drums.

It's something everyone should try.

Describe your musical style.

(haha) That's always tough cause sometimes you feel guilty being like a lot of other bands, but I usually describe it as Pop-rock. Sometimes we have a heavier side, usually upbeat songs.

What makes you stand out from other bands from your area?

We're not hardcore. (haha) The scene on Long Island is very heavy, so it takes some effort to find a band like us. We also don't write songs specifically about girls and love. (haha)

(haha)

But, yeah, we like to have a lotta fun on stage. Love to get to know every single person that takes interest in us. We're very driven and try to play anywhere. We've been playing backyard parties with business cards and everything,
since the bar scene isn't so great.

Your a mind reader! I was going to ask about the bar and stuff.

Yeah, ask away. (haha)

That's later, though.

Alright, sure. (haha)

Who came up with the name "Sweet Hollow Drive?"

Well, Sweet Hollow ROAD was this creepy road, a few towns away. We used to hang out there when we first started to get to know each other, so it reminds us of good times, kind of. At first our name was "Awesome Josh" (haha). I'm not sure how that came about, but then we changed it to "Sweet Hollow Drive," representing the action of driving down Sweet Hollow. (haha)

What would you guys do there?

I don't know, just pretend to be scared and look for myths, and then play frisbee down the street. (haha)

(haha) Aww, that's cute.

Very cute.

So, you guys are releasing an album, what can we expect from it?

Yes, it's taking forever, but its very exciting! No 2 songs are alike and each can speak to a speicifc audience. We wrote a song dedicated to our friend Evan, who took his life a few years ago. It just shows our development to our older fans and how our style is maturing.

Aww, sorry about that.

It's all good.

What was your favorite part of making the album?

The studio experience in general! It was our first time we really spent a great deal of time in. Sitting there and hearing our songs be mixed and produced and sounding like a real CD for the first time is amazing.

What made you guys decide to cover the song "Hey There Delilah" from Plain White T's?

Well, Mikey likes to fool around at practice. He always plays covers, so he was singing the intro and then I started drumming to it with a weird beat and then Alex came down the stairs screaming and pointing "YES, YES WERE COVERING THAT" and then it just fell together as a punk cover. (haha)

I love that song.

I hope you like our version too.

I was actually listening to it like few minutes before the interview. What other covers do you guys do?

Well, since we play parties we play a huge amount of covers, but for typical bar shows, sometimes we break out a re-arranged cover of "Hey Jude." People usually say "it's very risky, but we pulled it off nicely".

If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Australia! (haha) We're trying to work on the states first, but that continent sounds pretty rad.

It's awesome there! Be careful of the kangaroos when your feeding them. Their fart stinks.

(haha) Well I'll keep that in mind, if we ever make it there.

Come to the west coast first though.

(haha) Gas prices are going down! Maybe!

I think cars should be fueled by milk.

That'd be bad for the cows and they're treated horribly enough. (haha)

Oh yeah. Forgot about the cows, nevermind. (haha)

""
(haha) Hey!

You guys played in bars, clubs, backyard parties, high-schools, colleges, and parks, which is the craziest place to perform?

Well I'd say definitely either parks or backyard parties. When your in a park or a party and everything is free and people are there for music and not for their friend's band, it's a lot more fun and they have liked us thus far.

What's the craziest thing that happened?

Moshing 7 year olds armed with lacrosse sticks at a Relay For Life, literally fighting each other to the music and they bought our youth size shirts. (haha)

Wow.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you bring?

Alex: A recording studio w/ instruments, a video camera, and my wii setup.

Mikey: An acoustic guitar, Emily, and a recording setup. Yeah, that sounds good.

Danny: My laptop, a Taco Bell, and a drum set.

Kevin: Trombone, Ukulele, and a Segway. (haha) That's all.

How would you charge your laptop? (haha)

Don't worry about that till it happens. We'll use Rob's answers for a generator and my charger.

(hmm..) Fine.

(haha)

Who's the worst driver in the band?

Mikey. (hahaha)

Why?

He's totalled 2 of his parents cars, 5 accidents (including fender benders), Ran over Kevin's foot and has been pulled over 8 times, with tickets.

(haha) Aww.

You went to Germany last year, say something in German.

Lach Gummi! Fruchtgummi mit wertvollen Vitaminen and Heisse Apfelsfte.

(hmm..) Is the first one about vitamins?

The first one means Gummy Snacks with Fruit Gummies and Watermelon Vitamins and the second thing means Apple Pie.

(haha) Yes.

(hmm) Nevermind. YES! I was right.

Oh, I thought it was interesting how I remembered.

(haha) How you say "I love you"?

I was only there for 10 days. I didn't find any girls I needed to say that too. (hahaha)

Oh, (haha) alright, then.

Do you have any advice for people who are juggling school and being in a band?

Well it's tough! But we do it. Alex is able to fly home from college, since his father works for Jet Blue.

Which celebrity do people say you look like?

(haha) Well in 9th grade people used to say I looked like Billy Martin from Good Charlotte. Kevin was said he looks like Ryan Ross? Alex doesn't really look like anyone and Rob look likes all of Hellogoodbye. I'd say we just look like a cleaner cut versions of most other bands out there. (haha)

Would You Rather:

Would you rather lose your cell phone or password for myspace?

Cell phone. We all agree.

Why?

Oh, I'm sorry. We meant we'd rather lose the myspace than our phones just cause I guess we have more of our personal lives in our phones.

Oh, (haha) okay.

And myspaces can always be re-done a little easier.

Would you rather have a tattoo of Hello Kitty or a dove?

Okay, Alex says dove. Kevin and I say Hello Kitty just cause she's asian looking (hahaha). We like japanese characters.

(haha) Who is your favorite japanese character?

(haha) No matter how old I get, I can't get over pokemon. (hahaha) I was such a fan.

(haha) I use to watch pokemon like everyday before school started.

mhmm! 7 am!

But Sailor Moon is awesome! (haha)

(haha) Yeah, she was rad too.

Would you rather be an English or PE teacher?

I'd say English. Actually, Alex is an English major.

Cool, Alex could help me on AP English!

(haha) Perhaps, if your struggling.

Not yet and what about mikey?

He wants to be a cop.

(haha) Alright this is called Fill In The Blank:

Name a band member.

Rob, since he's not here.

Guys like Rob's stage presence.

I like it when Rob is wrong about something.

Rob screams when he sees Alex's stomach.

(haha) Really?

(haha) Yeah, it's a long story.

Wanna tell or is it too long?

Well, okay short version. When Alex sucks in his stomach, it looks like a face. When he sucks in, Rob goes "OOOOOOOO" really loudly as if the belly button is screaming. It just makes us all laugh.

Oh, (haha) nice.

Rob is the slowest "".

Licker?

Thinker. (haha)

Oh, well it's sticking out its tongue so

(haha) Oh, I gotcha.

Where can people listen to your music and contact you guys?

The myspace (www. myspace. com/sweethollowdrive), our screennames are on the website. We respond to every comment and every message. Our musics up there or they can buy the album online, when it's finally out.

Okay, before we go ask the other guys, if you were a popsicle, what flavor would you be and who would you want to lick you cause I already asked you.

(haha) Okay, I won't answer. Alex says: the sonic popsicle and he'd want Rob to lick him.

(haha) I mean, fine. I guess you could answer again.

Kevin says: Danny Phantom ice pop and would want Christopher Walken to lick him.

Nah, my old answer was fine. (hahaha)

(haha) All I remember was you wanted to be Hulk!? I think.

(haha) Yeah, the green popsicle with purple and black and I'd want EVERYONE to try me.
