Thistle was on the brink of starvation when our team found him with nearly 200 other wild mustangs who had been removed from the range, fenced in, and then left to die on a desolate ranch.
But we could see from his beautiful, expressive eyes that his spirit hadn’t been broken by the neglect. We brought him to The HSUS’s Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Texas.

Millions of dogs and cats will spend this holiday season in an animal shelter waiting for a forever home. If you are in the market for a new pet, consider adopting from local shelters or rescue groups. And remember, don't purchase puppies from a pet store, from a Web site, from a classified ad — or from any source where you cannot be absolutely certain that you are dealing with a reputable breeder.

In the aftermath of the Canadian seal hunt last March, our team from The Humane Society of the United States landed our helicopter on an ice floe off Canada's east coast. Blood and carcasses were everywhere, and we didn't expect to find any seal survivors.
And then we saw him.
In the midst of the carnage, a small seal pup cowered in an ice cave, hiding his head as we approached. The sealers had overlooked him in their hurry to kill every seal in sight. This poor baby seal had just witnessed hundreds of his friends beaten to death, and he was trembling all over. We knew the only thing we could do to help him was to leave. With the seal hunt closed in the area, we knew he would be safe. Sully was a lucky survivor: More than 72,000 baby seals last spring weren't so lucky. They were clubbed or shot to death for their fur.
Watch Sully’s story, then become a Humane Hero with your donation to our 2010 Animal Survivors Fund. Your donation will help save thousands of seals and other animals in the new year.

With cold Arctic air sweeping across the nation, The Humane Society of the United States urges pet owners to take extra precautions this winter to ensure the safety of their companion animals.
Don't leave pets outdoors when the temperature drops. Dogs and cats are safer indoors, except when taken out for supervised exercise. Regardless of the season, shorthaired, very young, or old dogs and all cats should never be left outside without supervision. Short-coated dogs may feel more comfortable wearing a sweater during walks. Pets who spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy. Routinely check your pet's water dish to make certain the water is fresh and unfrozen. Use plastic food and water bowls rather than metal; when the temperature is low, your pet's tongue can stick and freeze to metal. Warm engines in parked cars attract cats and small wildlife, who may crawl up under the hood. To avoid injuring any hidden animals, bang on your car's hood to scare them away before starting your engine. The salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate the pads of your pet's feet and may be harmful if ingested. Wipe the feet with a damp towel before your pet licks them to remove snow packed between your pet's paws. Pet-friendly ice melts are available at many pet supply stores across the nation or online. Antifreeze is a deadly poison, but it has a sweet taste that can attract animals and children. Wipe up spills and store antifreeze (and all household chemicals) out of reach. Better yet, use antifreeze-coolant made with propylene glycol, which is less toxic in small amounts than traditional ethylene glycol antifreeze. No matter what the temperature, wind chill can threaten a pet's life. A dog or cat is happiest and healthiest when kept indoors. If your dog spends significant time outdoors, however, he/she must be protected by a dry, draft-free doghouse that is large enough to allow the dog to sit and lie down comfortably, but small enough to hold in his/her body heat. The floor should be raised a few inches off the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The house should be turned to face away from the wind, and the doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic. If you're feeding homeless cats, be sure to provide an insulated shelter for them. Information about building a shelter, spaying and neutering and more is available at humanesociety.org/feralcats.

This is Fay. Our rescue team met her in Missouri, when The Humane Society of the United States helped rescue hundreds of animals from the horrors of dogfighting. She’d been wounded badly in a fight, and a dogfighter had mercilessly cut off her lips. She was in tough shape, but we found her in the nick of time.
Fay’s a lucky survivor: She now sleeps in a warm bed in a safe place. To help save thousands of animals just like her in the new year, we’re doing something we’ve never done before, and it’s BIG: We’re hoping to raise a million dollars online by December 31 for our 2010 Animal Survivors Fund.
Please watch Fay's story, then make a donation and help thousands of animals like Fay survive in the new year.

IHOP still only uses eggs from hens confined in cages so small they can't even spread their wings. But thousands have urged the restaurant chain to start using eggs from cage-free hens.
Now comedian Bill Maher has added his voice to the campaign. Watch his message to IHOP, then please make a brief, polite phone call to IHOP letting them know you want them to start switching to cage-free eggs: 1-866-444-5144.
Please call even if you've taken action in the past. And if you get a busy signal, please try again when you can. Thank you for all you do for animals.

The holidays are here, and it's the busiest puppy-buying season of the year. Sadly, thousands of puppy buyers are duped into supporting puppy mills when they buy from a pet store or over the Internet and don't take the time to visit their breeder.
During this year's Puppy Mill Action Week (Nov 30-Dec 6), we ask you to help us spread the word: Don't put cruelty on your shopping list. Always consider adoption first, and never buy from a breeder you haven't met and screened in person.

The Humane Society of the United States and the Cannon County Sheriff's Department joined forces to rescue 84 horses from a property in Tennessee.
The horses were seized by the Sheriff's Department due to signs of neglect and poor health, and have now been surrendered by their owner. The horses, who were rescued from squalid conditions on a 100-acre Bradyville farm, are now under the ownership of The HSUS.
Rescuers also removed seven dogs, two goats and two chickens from the property. The animals were all in poor condition.
