One of the statements on the press release for Kick To Kill says ‘a gothed up version of Joy Division’ mmmmm, not sure I want to listen to the cd now, knowing there’s a chance that some upstarts are going to try and murder my idols.

Thankfully, I get over myself and give it a chance, and I’m happy to say that I have no regrets now, the band manage to find that very thin line of youthfulness mixed in with shades of the past, with front man Dave Cook doing his very own hypnotic singing layerd over a good bit of music.

Bravo Boys.

I like many other people out there have been affected by the economic climate, and although I don’t want the charts littered with tales from the suburbs (or estate), it would be nice if some of the mainstream artists could do something that relates to the times we’re living in rather than the usual droning shite that the X Factor generation offers.

With a clear message to them wanker bankers, The Echo Session get straight to the point asking where is the money, with a banjo in hand, they hold the melody well, and although from Glasgow, they sound more like a tuneful crossover of the Coral and the La’s.

If I was to ask somebody to watch me bleed, I doubt they’d be very entertaining of my offer. But if Kick To Kill were to offer, I’m sure there’d be a raft of people eager to take them up on their generous offer. And, indeed this single is a good basis for such an offer as it does exactly that in a manner that would certainly get many people in the mood for the abrasive, dirty sound that this nihilistic song is built on. Reminiscent of The Stooges’ pure rock and roll ethos, singer Dave Cook gives a performance so convincing you almost can picture the blood flowing out of his veins as the guitars fuzz, the drums bang and the rock gets harder. Amidst their dirty sound it has deceptively smooth production to it all, a pulsing beat and probable guitars smashing against any near bye walls. Perfect for a head banging session like none before ‘Cut Me’ really will literally cut you off from your idea of music and get you rocking out like you’re in a club with The Stooges in their heyday.

Kick to Kill’s new single “Cut me” is a fast paced song driven by consistent kick of the bass drum that acts as the heart of the song. It quickly evolves into a late 70’s or early 80’s synth heavy tune about lead singer Dave Cook’s experience of being stabbed four times while in Glasgow.

The song is instantly captivating, enthralled by the constant kick of the drum you will find yourself wanting more, and you will get it. For four and a half minutes you will be treated to layers of magically arranged guitars and synth.

The chorus “Come on, come on and cut me/Come on, come on and watch me bleed,” is aggravatingly tough as nails. Had this been an emo song about love, the line would lose any credibility, but because it is literally about being stabbed, you gain a level of energy from the song that pumps you up and makes you say “Fuck yea, let’s do this.”

Thanks to EGL Magazine for a great feature on Kick To Kill...  Here's some highlights, but we'd recommend clicking the link at the bottom to read the whole story...

'Cut Me' is the brand new single from their forthcoming EP, and Kick to Kill really are proving themselves to be one to watch.

One thing which is very apparent in Kick to Kill's music is just how much they love what they do; they have notated their passion and enthusiasm straight into the track, and you can't help but get excited about these guys.  There's something very unusual about their sound, something nostalgically retro with David Cook's voice which wouldn't sound out of place in an 80s synth band - but this doesn't leave them sounding old-fashioned or like anything you've heard before, Kick to Kill are bringing something new to the rock world.  You are going to like this band, but you probably won't be able to put your finger on why.

Their heady rock has subtle undertones of both gothic and emo inspirations and they are a band that will appeal to a wide variety of people.  Download the single from www.myspace.com/FlowersInTheDustbin from Monday and you'll be eagerly awaiting the release of their EP next year.

A rather instant 80s alternative sounding single from Scottish Kick To Kill, it feels like a forgotten cut from The Lost Boys soundtrack. Part angry guitar, bobbing bass-line and sci-fi synths, over which lead singer Dave Cook channels the likes of Ian Curtis and Jaz Coleman

With a simple structure and repetitive lyrics it's a deceptively smart single, like many 80s post-punk songs it lacks much depth and revels in it, but being a appealing, opaque and simplistic. After their original line-up fell apart, they've pulled themselves back together, acquired a new member, supported the likes of The Fall and The Damned and Cook even survived a near-fatal stabbing.

With their debut EP ready for release early next year I wouldn't be surprised if they quickly gathered a dedicated following based on the strength of this track alone.

In case you were wondering, the rather stunning image featured on Kick To Kill's forthcoming single 'Cut Me' is by Billy from Monkeytwizzle photography.  Our vocabulary can't really do his art justice, but suffice to say the man is deeply talented.  Like the best bits from a David Lynch movie.

Best bet is to have a browse through his work at www.monkeytwizzle.com

Stunning.

And the person featured in the pic is in fact the legendary Razorchild.
