Friends!!! I hope you are having a nice time this Holiday season! I am enjoying being with friends and loved ones... and I'm especially enjoying the magic of Christmas through the my 3 year old Kai !

It has been a crazy year for me! I have been going through a divorce all year... I have become a single father and have established amazing bonds with my 3 year old throughout this transition and he is truly thriving in the two home environment... I have fallen in love with an angel who has been a shimmering light in the darkness i have faced... I have taken a full time job to make ends meet... I have really missed making art frequently as a result of these life changes. I look forward to the new year and the closure it will bring... the beauty of fatherhood it will bring... the love it will bring... and I truly hope to find significant time to make art and spill the emotions, inner turmoil, and fascinating beauty I have been living through

Much love! and a very sincere thank you for the interest and support you have shown for my art.

Wishing you all the very best in the new year!!!!

Bauhaus | Go Away White

I recently had the pleasure of working with my favorite band from back in the day, Bauhaus. I did all of the design/layout on their new full length cd/record that was released yesterday. It was a great experience working with those guys.

It is a very minimal ghostly design... the cover text is just embossed (no ink) and all of the text on the package is gloss white over matt white. I experimented with some new-to-me printing techniques on this and im anxious to see the final package. Let me know what you think if you get a copy.

cheers, Scott.

Making of 3 paintings

I have been experimenting with some new techniques lately and here is an inside peek at my recent process. I have been wanting to instill more freedom into my art for a while now. These paintings represent my first exploration creating completely freeform compositions. Each painting was created with no preconceived notion of how it might end up... just going for it and then tipping the scales till i find a balance that I'm happy with.

This blog is also posted at: http://scottsaw.com/making_of_rocket_birds.html (comments and questions may only be posted on the mypace version tho)

ROCKET BIRDS 001

Slab-o-wood

Laying down some color - brush on, wipe off with paper towel. Oil paint makes as a great wood stain.

Stencils

Working flat- i use a tooth brush to spray paint through the stencils. the lines are created with a liner brush and pastels.

Working out some of the lines using a larger brush

Stencil

Dropping in foreground figures

Finished

Color corrected (had it photographed by a pro, did the color correcting myself)

On display at the Cannibal Flower 7 Yr. anniversary show.

ROCKET BIRDS 002

Another related painting... just getting started - throwing down some texture using stencils and spray paint

Working quick and loose with oil paint.

Using spray paint to rough in composition.

Applying oil paint

Using liner brush painted in some background texture.

Using a big brush painted in black dust.

Toothbrush action for spattered blending.

Welcome to another 'Making-of'! I didn't take notes as i created this painting - so i will just drop some images and notes so you can see how it went down. I don't know how many hours I spent on it... but it took about 8 nights i think. Hope you like.

As always, feel free to comment or ask questions.

THE DRAWING

I had a quick flash of this idea and took about 30 seconds to jot it down so I could revisit it later

About a week later when i had time to focus on the piece i created a few quick thumbnail variations to nail the image... dug the one with the star in the background.

Created a detailed drawing on tracing paper and then applied it to the wood using carbon paper.

I chose this piece of wood because of the oval pattern near the top - it lines up great with the focus of the painting.

The transferred drawing in context.

THE PAINTING

Here the blue paint was brushed on and then wiped off with paper towels to stain the wood.

Three blues...

Added the yellow the same way - brush it on then wipe it off evenly... being careful not to rub it into surrounding colors.

Added the darker blue stars. I work sideways and upside-down a lot.

An outline was added to further define the color separations. Seems like such a simple thing - but it takes time cuz working with stained wood leaves very little margin for error - gotta get it right the first time.

First pass at the shroom heads.

A glimpse of my work space. Here I added the dark blue on the bottom and the color bands passing through the skull.

Added the background shrooms and the stems and spots on the amanita muscaria shrooms.

Detailed out the spots on the shrooms, painted in the modified eagle skull, detailed out the color bands near the skull, added the birds in the background channels, began painting the two side characters.

Close up of the skull

The pallet. I use glass and pretty much scrape it clean after each painting.

The drawing... and the finished painting.

The next few images are detail views of the finished painting.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this tour!

Please feel free to comment or ask questions - cheers / s
