As of today, the debut full-length from Plus Device is available worldwide. Influenced by the timeline of the earliest forms of Detroit/Chicago electro/techno/acid on through to current strings of underground electronic music being produced today, Puncture is an album full of hard hitting beats and percolating melodies. The production is part rough and part slick, a perfect balance as nostalgic as it is modern. From poppy, flirtatious songs like 'Body Heat' to the drugged and dragged-out acid cut 'Our Pleasures' to the downright animalistic booty-bass of 'Sexual Harassment', they just don't turn out club music as fun and enjoyable as Plus Device anymore.

Plus Device: Body Heat
Hefty

Recalling Afrika Bambaataa, Mantronix, Drexciya, and Model 500 and the electro-techno-house axis infamously associated with Detroit, Chicago, and New York, the chrome-plated electro-funk of Plus Device's Body Heat kicks an 80s-styled drum machine groove into gear amidst bright synthesizer stabs while robotic voices chant You give the kind of body heat I need. The four-track EP pairs three variations of the cyber-sexed title song with the equally punchy You Know I'm V.I.P. Though the song tends towards the overly repetitive, one hopes the group (a duo whose identities aren't revealed) retains the sleek gleam on its upcoming full-length release.

Plus Device - Body Heat EP (Hefty)

Yesssss! Finally made it to Friday!

I wish I was out at SXSW like robot Mark - damn it, I'm so jealous I could spit - but someone's gotta try to hold down the fort here, right? Well, like I said, its Friday and that often means my posting some kind of jammy jam song - this Friday that jam comes in the form of an electro-body workout tune by Plus Device.

Plus Device... is... well, all I can tell you is the fact that Plus Device is "two well-known producers" - that's about as detailed as my actual description of the artist can get because Plus Device is one of those top-secret projects the label won't tell anyone about, so that's it. Really.

It sounds like some kind of Detroit electro funk, which it basically is: classic electro beat, squiggly bass grabs, robo voice telling you he wants your body heat. Its solid dope stuff. One of the big reasons for this is because the record, the Body Heat EP, is being released by the Chicagoland Hefty Records, known for their solid experimental electronic and instrumental Hip-Hop releases (ie: Eliot Lipp, whose track "Real Tragic" I posted back in October). RIYL: Cybotron, Mantronix, Drexciya, Depth Charge records, Rephlex records (esp. Ceephax Acid Crew), DMX Krew's Breakin' records, etc.

You can buy the record (12" or CD) direct from the Hefty website - which finally went through a total overhaul, and is now all gorgeous and flash-enabled. A lot of the time sites like that bug me, but navigation on the site is easy, and you can get to their webstore from each release's page. You can also download the EP from iTunes.

So, go ahead and do the robot at your desk, or in the car on the way home from work, because its nearly the weekend, and that is reason enough to celebrate.

Plus Device Body Heat, 12" EP (Hefty)

The newest signings to Hefty drop their debut EP just in time for some spring break dance party extravaganza. Plus Device is a secret side project of two well known electronic producers why is it secret? I'm not really sure. But if it's on Hefty it's narrowing down the possibilities in my mind. Regardless of who the duo actually is, this EP is bound to get some people on the dance floor. Obviously taking influence from the start of electronica and some 80's sensibilities for good measure, Plus Device is going to be a hot name on the tongues of DJ's in the months to come. Big beats and thick synth-lines dominate their sound. Housing only four cuts, and three of them being remixes of the title track, this one might be strictly for the dance crew. But it has perked my interested for the full length that is supposed to be out sometime this summer. I mean, how can you not get down with a group that has a song titled "You Know I'm VIP" on their debut? - Jake Haselman
