Father Phoenix – Large Bodies EP
Record Label: Forge Again
Release Date: June 9, 2009

Who?

Father Phoenix is an energetic Milwaulkee quartet signed to Chicago’s Forge Again records. So far they’ve been kicking around for about 5 years, putting out one full-length and this EP.

How is it?

It’s good. Riffy, garage-leaning punk that takes cues from ‘70’s rock and the dudes from the ‘90’s who tried to revive ‘70’s rock (like Clutch), every track would be good to open a beer to (and none of your hipster PBR crap, either.) The EP is brief, but it packs a fist-pumping punch in tracks like the opener “Brothers of Fire”, with a stomping verse and Tom Morello-esque chorus riff bound to initiate some moderate-to-heavy head banging. Vocally, the group comes off like a beefed-up Molly Hatchet (which is a compliment). Musically, subtle nuances such as the Doors keyboard organ bubbling under the mix in the title track become more apparent on repeat listens. What’s first and foremost are the grooves, which are plenty.

Track Listing
01. Brothers of Fire
02. Plunderstorm
03. Starless
04. Large Bodies (Stay Horizon Bound)

FATHER PHOENIX - LARGE BODIES LP/CD now available for pre-order
Father Phoenix's latest EP "Large Bodies" is now available for pre-order.
The CD is actually shipping now and the LPs are en route from the plant.
As soon as they arrive they'll be silk-screened and ready to go. Should
ship by the first week of May. Just in time to see the Wolverine movie! Or
not. Either way, if you want to check out Father Phoenix (who also just
finished record a full length album I have yet to hear in its entirety),
you can do so by visiting their myspace page
(http://myspace.com/fatherphoenix) or to hear the EP in its entirety you
can visit Dead Format (www.deadformat.net) for an exclusive stream of the
entire EP! In addition you can sign up to win a test pressing of the LP,
limited to just 6 copies. The LP is limited to just 300 copies on clear
vinyl with a silk-screened b-side and comes with a full artwork copy of
the CD, which is also an environmentally friendly eco-pak made from
post-consumer content. Of course I encourage you all to check out the LP
version but the CD is nice and cheap for those who prefer the digital
format. It will be available from a million different download sites
(iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, etc.) on June 9th. It will also be available in
stores and from online distributors in June as well.

Hey Folks!

Its time for an update.

We are finishing up recording our E.P. "Large Bodies". The EP will consist of 4 brand new songs that we are really pumped about. Theres just a few more things we need to finish tracking including some extra percussion stuff and organ.

Speaking of organ…We have a new member in the father phoenix family. Keith Stendler (of temper temper/old roommate fame) will be playing with us from now on. We've had a bunch of practices with him and its sounding great. Our first show with him is on Sunday May 4th at Mad Planet. Dead Meadow is playing as well and it should be a fun show.

At the end of may we will be heading out on the road for about 3 weeks with our pals Cougar Den. They were nice enough to let us join them on the fun bus out east. The dates are posted on both of our pages and there are still a few dates that are unconfirmed. If theres anyway you or someone could help us out please message us or cougar den ASAP. Anyway we are excited to finally get out on the road again and play in some new cities.

Yeah fun!

The tour we'll be the final shows we play as a three piece. Keith can't make it out with us and so we will join forces with him after we return home. Soon after we return home we hope to get the EP released and play a bunch of shows around here. We do have one show booked right now…its at…summerfest. The plus side about this is that we are sharing the stage with all of our friends bands. So it will be a big hang out pretty much. More details on that in the show section.

Ok, so I think that's it for now. The wheels are in motion.

Thanks for your time and take care.

Love,

Father Phoenix

Going Their Own Way: The members of Father Phoenix have stayed contently under the radar for most of their two-year existence, playing small punk shows and basements, but now that they've cut their first album, they're beginning to branch out beyond the punk party scene.

This Thursday, Nov. 15, Father Phoenix will celebrate the release of that self-titled disc on a 10 p.m. bill at the Stonefly Brewery with Red Knife Lottery and Novel. The album is a bit schizophrenic, singer/guitarist Kristopher Maedke-Russell explains, since it compiles material written both under their current, bass-augmented incarnation, as well as from their early days as a two-piece. The songs they've posted to their MySpace page, www.myspace.com/fatherphoenix, showcase a menacing, Melvins-esque aggressiveness and the same sonic ferocity that drove Unwound's astounding mid-'90s records.

"We try not to get pinned down by our influences," Maedke-Russell says. "We just focus on really abrasive rock music, juxtaposed with all [the] sappy crap we like, too."

Which begs the question, which sappy crap?

"Well, I've always been a closeted Fleetwood Mac fan," Maedke-Russell says with genuine enthusiasm. "Between their songwriting and their vocal melodies, it's obvious they put a lot of thought into their songwriting. They were the total package."
