AMERICAN IDOL CAMILE VELASCO WINS HAWAII MUSIC AWARDS’
SINGLE OF THE YEAR FOR HIT SONG “GUAVA JELLY”

HONOLULU, HI (February 17, 2009) – Maui’s very own American Idol, Camile Velasco, is being honored for Single of the Year at the 12th annual Hawaii Music Awards for her rendition of Bob Marley’s classic, Guava Jelly. The singer collaborated with Grammy Award winning producer Stephen Marley, the son of Bob Marley, to record the song in Kingston, Jamaica at Bob Marley’s original home recording studio at 56 Hope Road.

“I could not be more proud to receive this honor from my home state for a song written by Bob Marley, a man whose musical talent has deeply inspired my artistic drive,” says Velasco. “I feel really humbled and thankful to my record label and my managing agents. This is just the beginning and I am extremely excited for what the future has in store for me.”

For Camile, working with Stephen Marley would have been an honor in itself, but recording in Jamaica at Bob Marley’s original home studio was a life changing experience. Guava Jelly is the debut single from Camile’s upcoming solo album Koy, to be release this year on Up Above Records.

“It has been a fascinating journey for Camile and it is gratifying to see her home state of Hawaii showing support for her music,” says Doug Kato, chief executive officer of Up Above Records. “I am very proud of Camile for her unwavering commitment to succeed and thankful to the Marley family for their backing.”

“We signed Camile with Up Above Records two years ago and since then have seen her career flourish as she transitioned from American Idol contestant to Universal Records recording artist to award winning songstress,” says chief executive officer for Hawaii Pacific Entertainment Lincoln Jacobe. “It is very rewarding to see Camile receive recognition for all her hard work. As her managing agent, we at Hawaii Pacific Entertainment have extensive plans for her future, including appearances, endorsements, and international opportunities to promote her first full-length album.”

Born in the Philippines and raised in Hawaii, Camile became one of the top ten finalists on the third season of American Idol. Shortly after the competition ended in 2004, Camile went on a sold out National Tour with fellow contestants. She has also collaborated with influential artists including Stephen Marley, Visionaries, Pras of the Fugees, Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas and Jeru the Damaja. After releasing a single on Motown Records, Camile formed a partnership with the Asian American owned indie pioneer label, Up Above Records.
