September 2009 Edition

 Howdy!

This is the 1st of 2 emails I will be sending to y'all this month. This is my normal overview of September. The 2nd will deal solely with Evening for Chuck (my annual pancreatic cancer benefit).

August has had a few real high notes for me. Playing a sold out show at the House of Blues with Trevor Hall was one of the true highlights of my summer! Doing Burning River Fest, Rock the Block, and returning to the House of Blues with the Coldplayers were also great moments!

However, one of the brightest moments for me was a conversation with a deeply spiritually tuned-in man the other night specifically about the artist in relation with the cosmos/God/creativity/Love. Perhaps I'll blog about that soon - once I've had a moment to truly digest it. (Which, but the way is at www.buffalozef.blogspot.com).

I. NEWS FLASH:

*VERY IMPORTANT to me personally - This September the 13th will be the 4th Annual Evening for Chuck pancreatic cancer benefit at Musica in Akron. All proceeds go to the wonderful Lustgarten Foundation. It's an all-day music, food, fun uplifting celebration of life featuring Rachel Roberts, David Ullman, Eclyptic, the Woovs, Faces Made for Radio, TM Gottl, and my own band headlining. Plus a few special guests, raffles, and speakers. We've raised over $20,000 for this event so far, so please come out, and tell your friends about it, and help us really bring some hope to the 35,000 people and their families that are going to be facing, and the majority dying from, this disease. The show kicks off promptly at 1pm. $10.  

* Akron Life and Leisure Magazine and their 45,000 readers named us as the Best Local Band (behind the Black Keys)! We are thrilled with this kind recognition!

2 • Wi Fi Cafe •  (Cuyahoga Community College Metro Campus - in the new Center for Creative Arts building on Woodland Ave, Cleveland, OH) • 12:00pm. This show is the inaugural event at both the new Wi Fi cafe location but also the new Arts building!

2 • Morrow County Fair •  (Morrow County Fairgrounds, Mt. Gilead, OH) • 8:00pm. You know this is gonna be fun! Full band set.

3 • Sparx in the City •  (Otto Moser Restaurant, Star Plaza, Cleveland, OH) • 5:00pm. Sparx is a great event incorporating the city and various performers on the streets all over!

4 • Canton Palace Theater •  (605 Market Ave N, Canton, OH) • 7:30pm. As part of the First Friday I will be performing a short acoustic set at this lovely theater.

4 • Outpost •  (4962 SR 43, Kent, OH) • 9:00pm. Full band set!

5 • STOMP! Cleveland Metroparks Event •  (4040 Riverview Rd, Peninsula, OH) • 1:00pm. This event was a blast last year!

5 • Thorncreek Winery •  (155 Treet Rd, Aurora, OH) • 7:00pm. A nice winery with good wines! If the weather's nice, the patio is really lovely.

6 • House Concert •  (Akron, OH) • 6:00pm. I love house concerts! You should have one! Email me to find out how easy it is!

11 • Jim Chenot's Radio Sandbox •  (91.3 WAPS The Summit, www.913thesummit.com) • 11:00pm. Interview and performance.

12 • Mustard Seed Cafe •  (3885 Medina Rd, Montrose, OH) • 6:00pm. A wonderful organic market and cafe!

13 • Cleveland Browns Stadium •  (E.9th and Lakeside, Cleveland, OH) • 12:00pm. Full band set! We are rocking the home opener! We'll be taking donation for Evening for Chuck there as well!

13 • 4th Annual Evening for Chuck •  (Musica, between High St and Main St on Market St, Akron, OH) • 1:00pm. Full band set! All proceeds go to the Lustgarten Foundation. Music, food, raffles! The music kicks off at 1pm sharp! 18 • Evening Muse •  (3227 N. Davidson St, Charlotte, NC) • 8:00pm. w/ David Meade. $10. Coolest club in Charlotte - by far!! It's gonna be so nice to return to one of my favorite states!

21 • Wolf Creek Winery •  (2637 Cleveland Massillon Rd, Norton, OH 44203) • 7:00pm. Spectacular views - especially this time of year! - and fantastic wines, this is a lovely evening! Bring your friends! Weather permitting, I'll be outside, which is always gorgeous!

23 • Akron Canton Airport •  (Cleve+ and Summit County Young Professionals event, Akron, OH) • 5:30pm. Cleve+ is doing some great things, and we are happy to be performing this event! Full band set.

24 • Zach Unplugged at Uncorked Wine Bar •  (High St near corner of Market St, Akron, OH) • 5:00pm. I can't tell you how fun this show will be! Great wines, and a completely unplugged set. This is going to be a very intimate and unique set!

25 • Hermes Winery •  (6413 Hayes Ave, Sandusky, OH 44870) • 8:30pm. Good wines and fun times! These shows are always a party! Try the Recession Red!

III. What's ahead?
October 17th - House of Blues (Cambridge Room). This is a show with our friends Kristine Jackson and the Jack Fords! It's a full band set! And it's all for a great cause! Mark your calendars!

Plus, i'll be returning to Louisville, KY Oct 2nd and 3rd!

I just want to talk about an upcoming show of mine.

It's gonna be a good one. A really good one.

In fact, if you're only going to come to one show in the month of August, this should be it.

In fact, if you have only $10, and you were planning on buying food, i would actually advise that you'll get more sustenence out of this show.

Trevor Hall is a wonderful poet of a songwriter whose lyrics are some of the most divinely inspired words I have heard. He is a sweet soul, as well, and you will enjoy his set and band.

Parma-born singer-songwriter Zach is tireless. In the last decade, the Akron native has released nine albums and performed 200+ shows a year. He's played onstage with everyone from Dave Matthews and Neil Young to War and Chicago. And on his latest soulful effort, What I Meant To Say, he delivers his ten best and most organic-sounding tracks yet. He veers away from John Mayeresque territory and stretches out into a distinctive folk-rock/Americana take on pop music. Think Counting Crows with a Freedy Johnston-like sensitivity... and yet, he can get the funk out when he likes.

Zach recorded Say in Atlanta with producer Nick Chawala (Collective Soul, Gym Class Heroes) and the duo seem to have struck a creative chord together. "A Way Through" opens the festivities, with a rumination on Zach losing his father to terminal cancer. You find yourself thinking about the end of the line/ I find myself thinking about it more than I mind... he sings and you feel the disc (like his others) pull the direction of the disc into heartfelt existentialism. "Runaway," "Sky is Falling," "Some Love," "What Are You Afraid Of?" and the set-closer "World on Fire" are among the highlights here -- though "Apple Pie" could (and should) be this summer's funky-crunchy anthem of looking forward and staying real. Let's face it, you're fed up with what's on the radio in your car anyway. Zach's got a lot to offer; you'll definitely enjoy his craft.
