Here's a few reviews for our section of the "Magnetism, That Electricity..." compilation:
"Magnetism, That Electricity... is a compilation made out of tracks from four bands that mostly have nothing in common but the somber and structured quality of their sound.First up is London's Mandelbrot Set, who surprised everyone in 2006 with their critically acclaimed opus All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeated."Astronomy And Allied Sciences" sees them experimenting further in their quiet-quiet-bam!-really-fucking-loud sound, sporting crazy rhythm sequences and complex sampling that would make the afore mentioned mathematician proud. My musical preferences being what they are, it's their part of the split I was the most anxious about hearing, and satisfied I was. After a long, droning introduction, the track suddenly breaks in an epic conclusion, sounds fusing in every direction, drums blasting away in a military march band fashion, with strident violin sounds accompanying the listener until the last chord splatters on ahard wall of silence." The Silent Ballet
"Mandelbrot Set makes good on the opening slot with the suite-like“Astronomy and Allied Sciences” which builds from a slow-motion prelude to a violent, string-drenched episode. If there's one thing that distinguishes the group's sound, it's strings, here so abundant it sometimes feels like entire orchestra sections are involved. Half way through the side, violins weave in graceful counterpoint over the echoing shudder of guitar-generated shards after which drums kick the band into cataclysmic overdrive during a raucous coda. Listeners lamenting the absence of new Godspeed You! Black Emperor material will find much to appreciate in Mandelbrot Set's contribution to the release." Textura
"...Mandelbrot Set, a trio set between ambient, drone rock and noise, whose debut album, All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeated, was released on HPLL in 2006. Here, they contribute four densely layered compositions, articulated into movements of an overall piece entitled Astronomy And Allied Science, which incorporate long guitar drones, treated distorted guitars and ethereal string work. There are echoes of My Bloody Valentines, Mogwai and, to a lesser extent, Godspeed You! Black Emperor in these pieces, but the trio’s work remains truly individual. The three first pieces are totally beat-less and evolve into one another without clear transition, moving from the gentle breeze of the opening composition into the much more intense circumvolutions of the following section and into the complex formations of the third part. It is only on the last piece that drums are introduced, bringing the pace up considerably for a short out burst of distortions before folding up." The Milk Factory
"Mandelbrot Set, under the aegis of 'Astronomy and Applied Sciences',commences proceedings with a moving suite: seas of strings, cello taking the mood into the avant garde, intermittent torrents of guitar, drones and echoes commingle to conjure something actually engaging rather than frustrating. The moment where the calm of 2a gives way to the urgent spasmodic drums of the car chase soundtrack 2b is a particular highlight." Straight No Chaser

Current mood: accomplished
Hello friends,
it's been a while but Mandelbrot Set have some new material, in the form of the EP "Astronomy & Allied Sciences" it's available as a part of the double vinyl EP compilation "Magnetism, That Electricity.."
Anyways here's the label spiel:
"Following the Highpoint Lowlife label showcase in January of this year, each of the artists were asked to contribute some fresh tracks for a double vinyl album release. Each artist has one side of vinyl each, and have given us some utterly devastating music!
The result is a stunning double x 12" disc album pressed on 180g heavyweight vinyl, comprised of four EPs from some of our leading artists: Mandelbrot Set, Fisk Industries, The Village Orchestra, and The Marcia Blaine School For Girls.
The vinyl version comes in a limited run of 300 copies, each with hand numbered and stamped certificate of authenticity. Each record is housed in a black paper inner sleeve and both are collected together into a thick clear PVC outer wallet. There is a different optical illusion printed on each of the discs that can be viewed when the record is spinning on a turntable.
*ONLY PRE-ORDERS on VINYL AT THE MOMENT - SHIPPING END OF APRIL*
The CDR version is in a limited edition of 100 copies, and contains the exact same audio, almost 80 minutes worth, and are housed in slimline black DVD cases. The artwork is a black lightning bolt logo and text printed on black paper. CDRs also come with hand-written and stamped certificates of authenticity.
We are also doing direct digital sales of this release via the website. You can purchase a zipped WAV download for £4 or 320kbps mp3s for £3
The four EPs range musically from the epic drone-noise sprawl of Mandelbrot Set, some of the dirtiest heaviest sounds ever dropped by Fisk Industries, a 19 minute electronic odyssey from The Village Orchestra, and three tracks of severely skewed dancefloor cuts from The Marcia Blaine School For Girls. Both vinyl and cdr versions have been immaculately mastered by Twerk in San Francisco"
Orders are being taken here: http://highpointlowlife.com
Be well,
Keung

Here are some nice reviews of our debut record "All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeated"
"There was Mogwai. Then there was pretty much nothing from Britain. Then suddenly along came Una Corda, Yndi Halda, Bossk, Symmetry and now Mandelbrot Set to kick out the jams. Out of all of these previsiously mentioned artists, Mandelbrot Set could most closely be compared to Yndi Halda though to be frank even that comparison would be somewhat disingenuous as Mandelbrot Set are less inclined towards parallel harmonies and there is far more variety in their compositional palette. It would also be disingenuous to consider them on a par with scene luminaries as Godspeed! and Mogwai but, hell, they're close. 'And The Rockets Red Glare...' hacks like Isis, 'Constellation Of Rings' soothes just like staring at fractal art for hours should be and the guitars of 'Benoit B. Mandelbrot' decay, collapse and surge in the manner entirely expected of their namesake's core theory. Debuts like this don't come along very often" Rock-a-Rolla Magazine
"Comprised of guitarist Keung, drummer Simon, and multi-instrumentalist Melisa, the surname-phobic Mandelbrot Set proves itself a credible companion to fellow 'instrumental rock' outfits The Timeout Drawer, Red Sparowes, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor on its All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeated full-length. Throughout the set, the trio confidently alternates between stabbing wail (the opener "And The Rockets Red Glare / Bombs Bust In Air") and chiming delicacy ("Those Lights Are Burning Brightly," a textured interlude of spindly guitar picking). At 13 minutes, one expects "Constellation Of Rings" will work incrementally to an awesome crescendo but the group defies expectation by opting for a peaceful acoustic coda instead of the anticipated explosion. The loudest moments emerge elsewhere: Melisa's violin sawing blends with raw guitar shredding on the sprawling "Seismic Waves Travelling Through" while titanic riffage in "Benoit B. Mandelbrot" sounds capable of peeling your wallpaper whether you want it removed or not. Not everything's cranked up to '11,' however, as demonstrated by the multi-hued melodica, violin, and guitar shudders that imbue the meditative closer "His Hands Were Too Small... " with slightly psychedelic ambiance. The group's sound may not be overly original, but there's no denying its power." Textura
"Any album that comes with a warning of oil consumption isn't to be taken lightly. Furthermore, any album that clocks in at nearly 45 minutes - and is only six songs long - is to be treated with extreme caution, and while Mandelbrot Set do occasionaly doodly away, "All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeated" is a stunningly realised triumph of cosmic shoe-gazing instrumental post-rock. But best of all is the cataclysmic approach to crescendos that Mandelbrot Set seem to throw around with reckless abandon. 'His Hands Were Too Small' builds and builds, ever tightening the tension between the protagonist and listener - and the air positively crackles until it implodes making it a truly rare album of titanic proportions." Big Cheese Magazine 4.5 stars
"Named after the most complex fractal image in mathematics and with album artwork consisting of world maps comparing oil production and consumption, the Mandelbrot Set are seemingly anything but a simple proposition. So it proves with their music, a complex hybrid of Constellation-style post-rock and epic shoegazing. Guitars are plucked quietly then forced through a phalanx of effects pedals; strings swell behind crashing percussion; layers of drones, samples and echoes fold in on themselves and then explode into swirling colour. The formula is familiar, but the combination of psychedlic influences and chaotic volume lend this an edginess and vitality all its own." Alternative Ulster 4/5

We were featured in a couple of polls at the end of 2006. Here's what they said:
Rock Sound Magazine "Hot 100" "An instrumrntal collective with all amplifiers rocking way past 11, Mandelbrot Set push post-rock into violently visceral territories; the songs on their 'All Our Actions Are Constanly Repeated' debut album of 06 were among the loudest heard the whole year, in any genre. Their successful balancing of terrifying bombast and graceful tenderness, though, ensures that no feeling of repetition really settles in the listener's mind."
The Silent Ballet "Top 50 Instrumental Releases of 2006" "Over the summer Mandelbrot Set came out of nowhere, released and album with almost no press, shortly thereafter announced they were breaking up, and then retracted the statement a few weeks later. This roller coaster ride can be directly compared to the band's music, which follows the mindset of like minded UK artists like (old) Mogwai, (old) Moly, and (old) Upc Downc. Mandelbrot Set is a trio who has full intentions to get loud and messy. This is quite a surprise, considering that most of the band members are classically trained musicians, but it just goes to show that when you've got the post-rock bug there's nothing that will cure it like a little reverb. All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeating bursts out of the gates with the electrifying "And the Rockets Red Glare," leaving a symphony of distortion in its wake and then transitions between pleasant, ambient tracks ("Constellation of Rings," "His Hands Were Too Small...") and epic, jaw-droppers ("Seismic Waves Travelling Through," "Benoit B. Mandelbrot"). "Benoit B. Mandelbrot" is the star of the album, marking one of the better "guitar-rock" songs of the year. If Mandelbrot Set holds true to the album title, they'll been producing great music for several years to come."
