..WASHINGTON, D.C. - Philanthropic bands and musicians will soon have the chance for their day in the sun, thanks to a national organization whose mission is assisting children and young adults with Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury (PABI).
Patrick Donohue, founder of the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation, announced today at a press conference that his organization will be hosting a 15-city "American PABI Heroes Tour."
"We are very excited to be able to honor and reward bands and musicians who have been helping PABI families, and give ones who would like to support PABI families an opportunity to do so," Donohue stated.
"The goal of the American PABI Heroes tour is to raise awareness of PABI and encourage local philanthropy for these PABI families," Donohue noted.
Craig Sears, an adult PABI survivor who serves on The National Advisory Board also spoke at today's press conference, added, "As a brain injury survivor myself I cannot even begin to express how much it means when groups like the bands and musicians who will be featured in this tour take time out of their busy lives to help people like me."
He continued, "Living with a brain injury is something that affects every part of your life, and if you're like me then you are also unable to work, so finances are a big problem."
Marilyn Spivack, founder of the Brain Injury Association of America and Honorary Chairwoman of the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation's National Advisory Board, stated, "From the garage band who once held a fundraiser for the 5-year-old girl with a brain tumor to the club pianist who donated her tips one night to the 23-year-old homeless vet with a brain injury from war, there are thousands of musicians in this country who need to be recognized for their good deeds. We're thrilled to be doing this tour to honor these very special individuals and groups who obviously care so much about other people."
PABI stands for Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury, which is a brain injury sustained in children and young adults from birth up to age 25. It is the number one cause of death and disability for children in the United States. Causes of PABI include traumatic events like motor vehicle accidents, assaults/child abuse, falls, blast injuries from war, sports concussions, being struck by an object, gunshot wounds and bicycle accidents as well as non-traumatic causes such as strokes, brain tumors, poisoning, lack of oxygen, meningitis, ischemia, poisoning, epilepsy, pediatric AIDS and substance abuse.
The first leg of the tour will begin in Boston, Massachusetts on May 3 and end in Seattle, Washington on May 17. In each city, 10-20 semi-finalists will be selected to compete live on the designated tour night.
Those semi-finalists will be chosen from any band or musician who enters using the official online entry form, including a music video of themselves performing and a description of their past philanthropic endeavors.
The winner in each city will be selected by a local panel of judges, and will receive a cash prize to be split evenly with their matched PABI family. The 15 local winners will then come to New York City for the final competition on June 5, where they will compete against each other for the title of American PABI Hero.
Entrants who have already been sponsoring a particular family of a child or young adult with PABI can choose to match themselves with that family by providing the family's details along with the entry form. Bands or musicians who do not know of a PABI family but would like to enter can still do so, and the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation will match them with a PABI family to sponsor in their local area.
By entering, bands or musicians agree to host a fundraiser for their sponsored PABI family within one calendar year of the tour date for their city.
For more information on the American PABI Heroes Tour and for the official entry form, visit the website at www.TheBrainProject.org.

Mindset X set to release new EP

Link to Article

By Dana Unger dunger@hippopress.com

Many bands have been formed out of the wreckage of previous incarnations, and the Manchester metal group Mindset X was no different. Vocalist Steven Scott and drummer Adam Cote were on the lookout for a new bassist in the fall of 2004 when they met up with Jerry Houle, and quickly the three formed a musical connection.

“All three of us have a wide range of what we like,” Scott said in a March 18 interview. “I try to be open-minded about a lot of stuff. I’m a big Rush fan and grew up listening to those complex arrangements, and like groups like Disturbed and System of a Down. Jerry grew up on music like The Beach Boys, and Adam is into Frank Zappa and King Crimson. None of it matches up, but each of it brings something different to the group.”

Shortly after the guys came together, they released their first CD, Statecraft, and in 2006 they released their next CD, Physics, and went on a tour of New England to support it. The band signed to Rat Pak Records and in 2007 self-produced the album Generation Rx, which became a top seller for the label. But the band decided to leave Rat Pak in December 2008 to go in a new direction.

“Joe [O’Brien, owner of Rat Pak] never put restraints on us or on the way we should write,” Scott said. “There were other aspects as to why we left, but really we kind of wanted to explore a way of doing different things. There were no big fallouts or anything.”

Now out on their own terms, Mindset X will release a new three-song EP on April 4, called This EP is Self Titled.

“It’s definitely a harder direction,” Scott said. “It’s more sarcastic, more aggressive, and shows our personalities more. We’re all over the place with our sound and range, but at this point we were angry — I think a lot of people are right now with the economy being so bad. All of these songs are written in a style that everyone can relate to, instead of just bitching about things. That does nothing for me as a musician.”

So will the band’s upcoming EP be a prelude to a future full-length album?

“We’re obsessed with writing new material right now, so I’d say yes,” Scott said. “The goal is just to really get our music out there.”

They are a metal band that wants to surpass metal stereotypes, particularly when it comes to lyrics. “Our songwriting changes every album,” Scott said. “We all write lyrics, bounce them back and forth via e-mail, add in, take out, and sometimes it all changes during rehearsals, because you find out what rhythm is going to work with it. I guess we’re kind of unusual in that we write the lyrics first and the music after, but we try and write real lyrics, and not just stuff about swords and demons.”

Mindset X is lining up a string of shows, including JAGFest in Southbridge, Mass., on Saturday, April 4, and a special show at Milly’s Tavern in Manchester on Thursday, March 26.

“It’s called the Wounded Warrior Show, and is for soldiers that have been injured in war, so all the funds from the night will go towards that fund,” Scott said. “Kinetic Theory, Great Misfortune, and Before the Crash will be there too. We’ve played with Kinetic Theory before and we’re pretty similar in style, so it should be cool.”

The band is also planning an extensive tour for the spring and summer, and is hoping to do a full-length release before the end of the year. Scott said that, over time, the band has seen the metal scene change in New Hampshire.

“It changes every year,” he said. “Bands form, bands break up, venues open and close. I think it’s thriving, but is not at its peak at the moment. With some shows, you always have at least that one that turns out to be fantastic, but nowadays it seems to be on the other side, though you cherish anyone that walks through the door and spends money to hear you play.”

NH/BOSTON BASED ALT METAL BAND MINDSET X SET TO RELEASE EP
Mindset X is set to release a new EP on April 4th, 2009. In the studio since December, the band is putting the finishing touches on what is to be a 3 song CD.
1. Sheeple
2. Sunset Blvd
3. Anti-Depressia

The EP is tent titled "This EP is self titled". It also marks a "heavier" direction for the band. "I feel this EP shows our musical personality's quite well" explains Steven Scott, guitar & vocals. "The goal with this EP is to spread the music of Mindset X. With that said, we will be giving these EP's away for FREE to do just that."
Mindset X will be performing at JAGFEST on the release date in support of the new EP and the gig will be considered the "CD release party". An extensive tour will follow throughout the year.
For bookings, a copy of the CD, reviews and any other information please contact Carla at carla@mindsetx.com.
