Last night I found myself shoulder to shoulder with man selling yo-yos for a buck outside the Fillmore. The worst part of the scene was, to the people walking out of the Medeski, Martin, and Wood show, the smelly yo-yo man and I were of the same ilk: street vendors. There was a moment when I thought to myself, "At what point in your life did you make a left when you most certainly should have made a right?"

I should clarify that I was not selling yo-yos, or superballs. I was not selling watches, or even t-shirts that read "Alcatraz Psych Ward: Outpatient." I, along with bandmates and buddies, was giving our EP to anyone who wanted it. The important distinction here is I was not selling, but giving. And giving some good tunes at that.

Reminding myself of the difference between the yo-yo man and myself, I slept pretty well last night. For more free stuff from Bloomsday Rising, come check us out at Ireland's 32 on Saturday, Dec. 6 (10 p.m.). Also playing: Martin Murray and Adam Diener. Free DVDs with our first music video, live performances, and pretty funny promotional skits included will be given to all those want one.

I hope this finds all well.

I had the chance to catch my first Ratatat show last night at Fillmore West. It should be stated that I am not very familiar with their work.

I don't know if the openers were designed to be iffy at best (they shall remain nameless), but they sure made Ratatat seem that much more on point last night. The bass was pretty high, but it didn't conceal the fact those boys can rip on the guitars. Everyone was into it--the crowd and the band (especially the keys player).

I knew walking into the show that there wouldn't be a singer, yet I couldn't help but wonder how they would sound with a solid vocalist adding one more layer to the mix. But, as my friends and I said, complaining about a lack of vocals at a Ratatat show is like complaining about the dialogue in a Woody Allen film.

All in all it was a great show. I am not a huge Electronica fan, but I am definitely getting into any music that fuses Rock and Electronica. Outside of Radiohead, I haven't heard a band do it better that Ratatat.

In the old days, record labels provided three critical services to musicians:

  1. The recording equipment needed to capture sound of a band at its best.
  2. The ability to promote a band to millions.
  3. The ability to distribute the music (vinyl, cassettes, CDs).

We all know the old days are just that—old. We all know that technology has made it possible for a band to truly be independent. The combination of Pro Tools, digital music, and social networking sites on which we all spend too much time makes B.B.M.L (Big, Bad, Music Labels) a collective dead man walking. Bloomsday Rising has been so inspired by the shift in power that we are currently recording, mixing, producing, and distributing an EP titled We Hope This Finds You Well on our own. The cost for you to get your hands on one of these? Nada. We have finally clued in on the fact that, for a relative unknown band such as BR, recognition is the only currency. And let's be honest, most of us aren't paying for any music anyway.

I can't tell you how empowering the experience has been so far. We're recording a list new originals that grab you by the collar from the first note. Be on the look out for video journals of the recording process, as well as live takes of the new songs in the weeks to come.

As always, thank you for the support. Please join us at our next show:

I came to The Black Keys scene very late (six months ago), but I felt like a teenager again when I first heard them. Over the past year I have been lamenting to friends that it had been some time since I last felt true excitement when I heard a band for the first time. Well, that all changed the first time a friend of mine made a CD of The Black Keys for me. Of course Dan Aurbach's thick and heavy tones and riffs are exceptional; and drummer Patrick Carney is the perfect compliment to the Blues and Funk influenced sound; but what stands out the most to me is Aurbach's voice. It's dripping with character, style, and--of course--soul.

How refreshing to watch a no-frills band get its due. And the best part is they're even better live than they are on the album, which is the true test in the end. If you haven't given them a listen, do yourself a favor and do so immediately. I promise you won't be let down.

So about a week ago my buddy mike and I were talking about different styles of music and their influences on our playing and musical tastes. Mike and I grew up playing together. He plays the guitar and I play the drums.
Mike was always into heavy metal and hard rock, while I was always more into country and alternative rock. In high school we could never see eye to eye on our different musical tastes. However, as we got older we began to understand the importance of not only listening, but also appreciating different genres of music.
Mike and I would always talk music. On road trips we would each bring along our i-pod and some of our favorite cd's. We would take turns playing each other our favorite songs and describing what aspect of that song we liked. By doing this I began to appreciate the complicated speed and precision of heavy medal drumming and Mike began to appreciate how a simple accent could change a song. We're still sharing music and both agree an open mind about different types of music can never hurt you, but only improve the particular style you wish to perfect.

Bloomsday Rising return to Ireland's 32 for an encore to last month's USF Thirsty Thursday celebration.

Live at Ireland's 32 - May 9, 2008
9pm - Midnight

Last time, it was about getting over your midterm anxiety, and 9 out of 10 doctors agreed that we were more effective than Paxil in laboratory tests. This time around, it's about taking a sanity break from finals, and that's why we chose Friday night...because Saturday is a lovely day to sleep in and recharge the brain.

As always, this will be a video event. So look hot, dance hard, and try to forget all about that "real world" out there, because it'll still be there when you sober up.
