Tues August 18 2009
Grizzly Bear have gone massive really quickly, the jury is out as to whether they are merely Animal Collective copyists or are ploughing their own field. Sold out like Michael Jackson

Magic Arm album Launch
with special guests
Beth Jeans Houghton
Sirconical

Deaf Institute
135 Grosvenor Street
Manchester
M1 7HE

Tickets £5

In the past year 18 year old Newcastle based singer/songwriter Beth Jeans Houghton has garnered a reputation as an antidote to the current crop of acoustic songstresses. With her alternative blend of experimental folk, Beth has been hailed by the NME as “a Joni Mitchell for the anti-folk generation.”

Sirconical has always been our favourite artist on the Twisted Nerve imprint, having been part of its originally bijou roster more or less from day one… His album has been in the making for at least a couple of years now, fusing his love of the thrumming folk and classic Hip Hop with an insatiable appetite for modern production techniques, electronics and complex rhythms, imbuing him with a sound that can veer from lazy, dusted breaks one moment to a hyperactive rhythmic attack Squarepusher would be proud of the next, while all the while harbouring an admiration for the kind of melodic transitions Plaid have imprinted on so many heads in the last decade

Bootsy Bootsy EP - Piccadilly Records record of the week 16/03/09

Magic Arm is a sonically curious soul who fuses folk, rock and
effervescent electronics. This six track EP captures his talents
perfectly: The title track is a great slice of electro folk with
keyboards that bleep and squelch under a super-melodic vocal, that
hints at Beck or maybe The Beta Band. Next up we have the see-sawing
keyboards and melancholic vocals of "Break My Lungs", followed by a
super slo-mo version of LCD Soundsystems "Daft Punk Is Playing In My
House". "My My" is a folk tinged instrumental that would soundtrack
cine-film footage of Paris in the spring perfectly! After that brief
interlude, "Said Things" reverts to the electro-folk style of the
opening track, with breathy vocals and gentle acoustics giving way to
squelchy synth'n'drum outbursts. And finally, the EP is rounded off by
the Real Dolls Remix of "Bootsy Bootsy" which ups the tempo and heads
for the dancefloor.

A wonderfully eclectic EP.
