as i write, i'm still unsure which section is being used, but what i do know is that my 2006 remix of nathan fake's 'you are here' will be the title music for the new charlie brooker series 'newswipe', which begins on BBC4 this coming wednesday, march 25th. if anyone would like to download the full 8.5 minute version, you can find it at the following link:

Nathan Fake - You Are Here (FortDax remix 2006) (theme from Charlie Brooker's 'Newswipe')

(link taken down at the request of james holden / border community)

for anyone who's not heard my work before, FortDax was the name i recorded and released music under between 2001 and 2006. since then i've been writing for a number of new pseudonyms and am hoping ultimately to become a commercial composer. therefore if anyone reading this is interested in commissioning further work, remixes etc then please get in touch. currently i'm writing a 20-minute orchestral suite among other things.

there are three 'archive bundles' of free mp3's available which cover vinyl-only releases, radio sessions, live work etc, and i'll post those links at the bottom (note - the remix of 'you are here' is also included in volume 02), and although i'm ambivalent about what exactly FortDax achieved during its lifespan, i feel that the best of the work resides in the two full-length albums - 'folly' from 2003, and 2006's 'divers'. it wouldn't be appropriate for me to upload these as i'm not the copyright owner, but i've found the following net links which i'll leave here for now in case anyone would like to hear them.

full details about the contents of the archival bundles can be found on a seperate blog posting, and there's a mini-website packed into each one too, but here are the links:

In the last couple of years, two old FortDax tracks have been used as the soundtracks to John Coombes' dance-to-camera films, both of which can be see on YouTube:

Possible Dancer (w/ 'Oxenfolly') :

dusttodust (w/ 'Horizon Seven-Seven') :

All being well, early next year John and myself are hoping to collaborate properly, this time with the creation of a new piece specifically for his film 'insideout'. It won't be under the name of 'FortDax' (and neither will my new recorded material...xxx), but I'll post here and let you know how this progresses.

take very good care,

thank-you to everyone who has downloaded the archival bundles thus far - the numbers both surprised & pleased me, but for practical reasons the files now have a new home and can be obtained from the updated links below. please note that archival 2 DOES now contain my remix of nathan fake's 'you are here'. it's also worth pointing out that i resigned from the feature film i'd been involved with (not without some regret) in order to speed the work behind my own new musical project(s). further details and an auditioning of vocalists to follow over the coming months...

(see the september 10th 2007 post or http://www.fedge.net/fortdax/archival/ for tracklisting and fuller details).

do i really need to suggest you all take very good care this time around?

Saturday, April 19, 2008

...the question's been posed a few times, so just to clarify...any 'retirement' was only ever of the name 'FortDax'. i'm currently working on an American feature film score (full details to follow) and have been chiseling away at the brittle bones of a new pseudonym for around two years now. i'd envisage that work requiring a vocalist to complete, but i'll put my postcard into this shop-window a little further down the line. it's difficult to believe that people are still listening to the old FD material - in a sense that's really gratifying, but on the other hand it's not necessarily work i'm proud of. that, one would hope, is still to come. perhaps it's your *faith* that truly surprises me and fills me with gratitude.

as ever, take very good care,

dx

...here's where the story ends.

after an enormous delay, the FortDax archive is finally ready. it comprises three seperate FREE downloadable bundles of mp3 files plus a mini-site (included) that covers almost everything* aside from the two full-length albums. the archive contains, amongst other work, the very first digital appearance of 'at bracken', a previously unheard remix of 'as yet untitled' by piano magic, the original version of 'fortune-telling fish' and a host of unreleased material...

FortDax archival part 1:

http://rapidshare.com/files/127280886/fda01.zip

- 'unreleased' (11 previously unavailable tracks) (2001-2005)

- 'at bracken' (mini-album) (2002)

- 'like cream inside your spine' (7" single) (2001)

FortDax archival part 2:

http://rapidshare.com/files/127577161/fda02.zip

- 'bbc radio 1 session' (john peel show) (2004)

- 'remixes'

- 'witch hazel tales' (split cd) (2001)

- 'van84' (cd single) (2005)

FortDax archival part 3:

http://rapidshare.com/files/127856935/fda03.zip

- full FortDax live set inc. 4 otherwise unrecorded tracks (2006)

*does NOT contain the albums 'folly' (2003) and 'divers' (2006) and the radio 3 'mixing it' session from 2006.

although copyright remains in all of the material, please feel free to distribute any of it as you see fit.

i'm indebted to my webmaster jeff keibel for his help & support throughout the archival project, which is hosted via www.fedge.net/fortdax .

my own notes and feelings about the material can be found within the mini-site, so i shan't go into detail here, but this is essentially my parting gift to you all. we'll catch up soon, although i'll have a different set of identities by then. thank-you very much for your support throughout what was FortDax.

as ever, take very good care.

all being well on monday, *finally*, we'll have the FortDax mp3 archive online. it comprises three generous bundles and a mini-site, the details of which i'll post tomorrow. the main thing you need to know is that it is provided absolutely free. close to three hours worth of listening and all you need to do is spend a little time squeezing sendspace for it.

closing in on the final act. i imagine you can sense my relief...

take care,

dx

http://www.channel4.com/4talent/ten4/musicinads.htm

...will allow you to read simon harper's article from channel 4's magazine about the often sordid relationship between art & commerce. this includes my own thoughts on a few topics and, in the main, discussion with geoff dolman (static caravan) and stef lewandowski (type records) as to their own ethics and approach.

p.s. - if you're my mother, 'my bits' are at the end.
