On Clocks:
Don't be afraid of ideas that are simple.
You don't have to be violent or morbid the whole time. You can portray the indifference of a clock just as well.
To portray a clock as an oppressor in a POSITIVE way, might be difficult to do clearly, but it is not disouraged.
Some notes:
Clocks are faces with hands.
They are hung like flags everywhere, next to Jesus.
We spend our entire lives referencing our good and bad experiences on them.
They will be around long after we are dead, nonchalant, as they have been since long before we were here.
Some of them have pendulums, which were used for hypnotism and torture.
Volumes of illustrations and musings have been created on the topic that date back to Egyptian Times. It would be particularly interesting for someone to recreate art based on concepts from the art from the 15th century that grappled with the subject.
If you read the posts in the group for this project, you'll find that this concept is nothing new in the western world or anywhere else. It is not necessary to be some kind of nihilist to participate in this project. No matter what you believe is going to happen to you after you die, time still applies to you and everything else, and there is only a finite amount of it left before your physical existence ceases. The phrase "Time Destroys All Things" is a statement that I think nearly everyone can relate to on some level, and while people may have varying perspectives on existence, this is a concept that doesn't necessarily intend to assert a philosophy, it more intends to utilize what most people use art for: to catharticize some idea or concept. What universal theme could be better to try to transcend?
On Visuals:
This project is not by any means limited to clocks. any medium is encouraged. The deadline only applies to 100 actual clocks, while the amount of other kinds of submissions is left out in the open.
Much will be done to accomodate someone's creation no matter how large or awkward it is as long as it is fitting and the artist is willing to meet me halfway.
This project is not very conducive to subtlety, and so large scale creations are encouraged. The scope of this project is very broad for a reason.
People have some extravagant ideas, and the only thing stopping them from becoming reality is the people themselves, and just so you know, links and resources are being collected.
Feel free to ask me about what you need.
Even if you don't have an idea, but you are interested in the project and have some visual art skill, contact me, because we will be looking for grants for commissioning people to realize ideas that we can't do by ourselves. (animation, metal sculpture, realistic Norman Rockwellesque water colors).
On Music:
It doesn't have to be made entirely with clocks, a clock or something like one should be used in the music to portray clocks in sound, at least in live performance.
Feel free to use any dialog samples or any thing else to make it.
We are still looking for more people to circuit bend alarm clocks and smoke detectors to modify them in a way fit for making music. We also are looking at digital cuckoo clocks for the same reason. Any help that you can provide in that arena would be greatly appreciated. This a form of rare craftsmenship that should be highly sought-after and utilized as much as possible.
For the cacaphony finale, we are still unable to find enough used appliances that can be set to go off at a certain time. Help and links etc would be appreciated. Feel Free to post any questions or suggestions below.
Thank you.
