ARE YOU CURIOUS NOVEMBER 2009 Ah, procrastination. The force of inertia weighing heavily on us every hour of every day (well, at least on me)... And with the winter darkness spreading out over us and the oncoming crush of holiday plannings and partyings taking up most of our spare time, it is hard to find time for the little enjoyable things, like seeing music in cozy little art galleries (or even at ours). But one has to soldier on, especially when it means you get to see our hot new SASNAK exhibition, in conjunction with the WHIRLIGIGS group show. Things will spin, flip, rise, and fall all on mechanical power. The magic of electricity, the forces of physics, and the wonders of the world will be explained, or at least illuminated. Anyhow, Justin, Jorgen and I want to thank everyone for a killer October. Not only did we execute (or at least watch them being executed) four very different exhibitions of art, but we had more shows than ever, and made it through our first round of musician residencies. It was an experience we won't soon forget, the chance to see groups get better and better before our eyes and feeling a part of a wider community. We really hope to pull these off at least once a year so get ready for one in April 2010, with a whole new cast of characters. NOVEMBER EVENTSUnless otherwise specified, all shows begin at 9pm (sorry, sleepyheads and morning workers) and we ask a 5 dollar donation to support the space and the bands. If you got money for beer and cigarettes, then you can spare some dough for the band to buy gas, food, beer, and cigarettes too. Wed, Nov 4th - DREW DANBURRY + KEVIN GREENSPON + LAND OF ILL EARTHQUAKES + CLARK 8We saw DREW DANBURRY playing at Port’o Call in West Covina, totally acoustic and at times acapella. Enraptured, we asked him to play the gallery. He brought a full band that time, and totally threw us for a whole different loop, giving the whole post-emo folk guitar thing a good Replacements-style kick in the pants, spitting in its hair for good measure. CLARK 8 rages with the same quiet intensity too, poised between rocking out and writing the catchiest pop songs possible. Think Elvis Costello before he got all soft on us. LAND OF ILL EARTHQUAKES is kinda new to the space, but their twee-meets-big band jam-out mashes up Arcade Fire and Belle & Sebastian with stunning results Honestly, if you have ever had a Camera Obscura song lodged in your head, or been obsessed with the Darla compilations, this will be an antidote to that blissful torture. And KEVIN GREENSPON, well, we toured with this cat, and he is unshakeable and unforgiving in his search for the perfect tranced out experience. Plus he has some rad Mennonite-ish facial hair. www.drewdanburry.com (check for downloads of his EP on this site) kevingreenspon.blogspot.comwww.myspace.com/landofillearthquakeswww.clark8.com Thurs, Nov 5th - VANDAVEER + PAIGE STARK + JUDSON McKINNEYVANDAVEER is a duo that spans the country, and the history of the country to boot. In fact, they float effortlessly between sublime Nick Drake-ish Victorian charms and breezy Wilco-ish Americanisms, which is pretty apparent with chief Vanderveer-izer Mark Heideiger’s bassist duties in the amazing These United States (a group that has graced our rug twice before skyrocketing into stardom). PAIGE STARK pulls together a simple ensemble to back her true-blue songwriting, steeped in the Vashti - Karen Dalton mystique, but with a good measure of the Lavender Diamond and Mariee Sioux vibe in there too. JUDSON MCKINNEY works down the street, but his music comes from the heartland found deep inside of late night AM radio populated with Jackson Browns and the aforementioned Wilcos of the world (this kid has a pretty dead-on Jeff Tweedy voice going on). www.vandaveer.comwww.myspace.com/paigestarkmusicwww.myspace.com/judsonmckinneyFri, Nov 6th - THE ROBOTANISTS + AGENT RIBBONS + THE DYLAN TREES + DEATHKITROBOTANISTS will have just returned to town from their wild shoe-gazing, awe-inducing adventures in NYC at CMJ (oh the acronyms you will meet!!!) , while AGENT RIBBONS will have just returned from Spain, spreading their crazy carnival punk mess around in foreign lands. We think the two alone would make a very special night of musical exploration, but imagine the fun when we bookend them with the tranquil laptop infused pop majesty of THE DYLAN TREES and the heavy rump-shaking disco of DEATHKIT... sounds like a party, huh. Think of it as a musical continuum, a scale in which you keep moving up and up with each group. Be here early and bring plenty of liquids, it's gonna be a long and satisfying hike. robotanists.wordpress.comwww.myspace.com/agentribbonswww.dylantrees.comwww.myspace.com/deathkitSat, Nov 7th - THE KRIS SPECIAL + OR, THE WHALE + SEASONS + BODHIOR, THE WHALE features like seven or eight freaking people in their band. And SEASONS ain't no little enterprise either! Well, we generally get nervous when there are more than 16 band members total in the groups playing in a night, and i guess we're pretty close with Portland's BODHI having a typical (but a-typical) four piece and THE KRIS SPECIAL weighing in at a shy 2 peoples (evenly distributed sex-wise, i might add)... ok, so much for the demographics of rock. BODHI merges together really satisfying shout-y type British accent-infused vocals with thick sweet organ tones and good-time drumming. SF's OR, THE WHALE (gotta love bands with punctuation in their name, so grammatical!!!) is indeed a seven piece big band of electrified sorrows and woes, using those fourteen arms and seven throats to good measure, making 21st century gospel for nostalgic robots. We will just have finished cleaning up from the Oct 30th performance by HP's SEASONS, but we'll still be glad to see their soulful take on big time shoe gazing and keyboard driven rock-n-roll. And, last but not least, THE KRIS SPECIAL remains one of our favorite local duos, smashing out quite a bit of sound from four little hands. Nick and Anne live every day as a rock-n-roll day, seeking the perfect riff, beat, or tune. www.myspace.com/thekrisspecialwww.myspace.com/orthewhalewww.myspace.com/sseasonswww.myspace.com/bodhirockTues, Nov 10th - ART DROP for WHIRLIGIGS 7p to 10p or make special arrangements. We want it!!!!Alrighty, it moves, we want it. If the visitor can turn a knob, spin a dial, pull on a pulley, we want it. It could be fan, a flipbook, a wheel, anything kinetic and movable. Trust me, when you see all the other crazy shit that is going to be in the gallery, you're gonna flip!!! Fri, Nov 13th - ART OPENING for SASNAK and the WHIRLIGIGS group show 8p to midnight - FREE, wine and various snacks. Definitely some dj's spinning some records in perpetual sound motion. Come and see the master craftsmen JUSTIN MCINTEER and BRIAN DINKINS unleash some cogs of fury on your ass. This is the most ambitious thing we've done yet, but with the proper encouragement, there is no telling what 2010 will turn out. So come on and get caught in our mousetrap and take a turn on the wheel. www.echocurio.comSat, Nov 14th - DRAMATURGY presents HOLY ROLLING EMPIRE + THE JET AGE + THE MONTHLIES + THE HARD TO GET + a special performance by TERRY de CASTRO (of WEDDING PRESENT)Rebecca Balin of DRAMATURGY rules, and tonight you will find out why! She's brought in Tuscon's HOLY ROLLING EMPIRE, who merges some heavy jams with some beautiful harmonies, without really stealing from any particular source but bringing up collective memories of At the Drive In, Elliot Smith and Karate. DC's THE JET AGE draws from across the pond, bring the jams of the Who into the 90s with soaring distortion pedal flights and some prehistoric leads (a la Dinosaur Jr, get it?). They were also nice enough to get their good friend TERRY de CASTRO, bassist for the WEDDING PRESENT (!!!!!) to come and do a solo set to open the show. How freaking coo is that. Local natives THE MONTHLIES and THE HARD TO GET round out the sets with their rocking exuberance and downright charming demeanors (haha, kidding, they are rock bands and are prone to throwing stuff). www.hremusic.comwww.myspace.com/thejetagewww.myspace.com/themonthliesSun, Nov 15th - MARK MATOS AND OS BEACHES + DAMEON LEE + THE CHOKE + BUMTECHOk, so think of this night as a two sided coin. On one side you have sweet tropicalia-infused AM country rock (and the always enchanting work of D. LEE, enchanting in that sort of whisky drinking truck driving down a long dark highway kind of enchantment) and on the other, you have pre-post-punk late 80's new wave dance music (peppered with an abundance of good humor (ok, well sick humor at least)). Heads or tails you win. I know, usually we go for more cohesive evenings, but this is one for both sides of your brain, as well as your gluteus maximus. So get ready to be pulled in several directions and maybe prep for some mood swings. www.myspace.com/markmatososbeacheswww.myspace.com/bloodonsnow1www.the-choke.comwww.myspace.com/bumtechTues, Nov 17th - MAN’S ASSASSINATION MAN + NEON NAVAJO + SHOWGIRLSHeavy jams from the boys formerly known as the Mae Shi and currently moonlighting in Signals, and evidently these dudes have come here to f'up the party, MAN'S ASSASSINATION MAN will surely make you cry tears in your beer with their Siltbreezian hijinks. NEON NAVAJO raises the one-man screamo thing to new levels, while SHOWGIRLS, fresh from their Gold Room-leveling escapades, promise to make you rethink your preconceptions of three piece keyboard bands. Bring the earplugs and settle in for some gut-wrenching and some mind-blowing. www.myspace.com/mansasswww.myspace.com/neonnavajowww.myspace.com/showgirlsmusicWed, Nov 18th - BATRIDER + BIRTH GLOW + O’S AND THE OCULIST + LOST LAKEVisitors from New Zealand and Australia, BATRIDER and BIRTHGLOW share a member in one Stephanie Crase, but beyond that, these guys differ like milk and tequila. BATRIDER claims the mantle of Flying Nun records, but by way of Kill Rock Stars, delivering a healthy but unsettling mix of heartbreak and hopefulness. BIRTHGLOW plays it a little lighter but no less heartbreaking. Orange County's O'S AND THE OCULIST lend us a more Californian sound, full of beachy goodness and loads of wacked out keyboards. LOST LAKE is a new project from members of the now defunct BLACK KITES and MOSPEADA, and they have toned down the pedal gymastics in favor of some good old fashioned songwriting. www.batrider.comwww.myspace.com/birthglowwww.myspace.com/oculistwww.myspace.com/lostlakemusic Thurs, Nov 19th - WHITE FANG + BOOM! + DIRT DRESS + STAB CITYThere isn't a thing in this world that makes me smile as much as watching WHITE FANG play. These Portland kids bring the jamz in a way not imaginable.. I always bring up the obvious Clash meets New Kids on the Block references, but man, you really gotta hear them yourself. STAB CITY shares this honor for my favorite LA group that I have heard this year, whereas DIRT DRESS kicks out the jam a la MC5, only like 20 years later. www.myspace.com/whtfngwww.myspace.com/stabcitystabcitywww.myspace.com/dirtdressFri, Nov 20th - DUSTBOWL REVIVAL + COYOTE + SON ARK + 1921aOur friends in DUSTBOWL REVIVAL have developed a night of "old-timey music", and despite the occasional electric guitar or bass, that's what we got tonight. COYOTE (Jessi Williams and co.) and SON ARK (Robin Harris and co.) may share some members, but they also share some down home charm in their folk ways. DUSTBOWL REVIVAL kicked up some haints and hollers the last time their carnival wagon rolled through, so who knows what will transpire tonight. www.myspace.com/znlupetinwww.myspace.com/coyotecoyotewww.myspace.com/sonarkwww.myspace.com/the1921a Sat, Nov 21st - ATOMIC SHERPAS + THE SCRAPPERSOK, so we got Vince Maghrouni and Joe Baiza, in their most conversational and interesting formats (in my opinion). So get ready to stretch out, cuz these two ensembles are gonna take their time on our rug and deliver the goods in multiple salvos. You gotta bring your dancin' shoes for this one, cuz ATOMIC SHERPAS is gonna bring the funk, James Brown-style, but don't forget to bring your thinking cap for THE SCRAPPERS unique brand of free-jazz meets primal jams. Or maybe it's the other way around. Either way, tonight is going celebrate all the best music Los Angeles has to offer. www.myspace.com/theatomicsherpaswww.myspace.com/scrappersla Sun, Nov 22nd - THE GREAT AMERICANS + CAVE COUNTRY + OLD THUNDER HEART + JOHNNY O'DONNELL, THE GOTHIC SINGERSome people come into the space and lay down the law about their musical ability and their band, and some of them make us just go, "Hell yeah, let's do this". Gabe from THE GREAT AMERICANS was just such a story, but hell, so were the dudes in CAVE COUNTRY, and so was JOHNNY. So why not combine all of this rock-n-roll mythology into one big night celebrating all that is good in the musical world. OLD THUNDER HEART may be traveling across the country, but he has definitely picked the right time to be coming thru Echo Park. www.myspace.com/thegreatamericanswww.myspace.com/cavecountrywww.myspace.com/oldtenderheart1www.myspace.com/johno39donnell Mon, Nov 23rd - NOW MUSIC MONDAY with BOBB BRUNO and guestsDavid Scott Stone, modular synth genius and all around nice dude, came in and proposed a bi-weekly event for the Curio, modeled after Nels Cline's now-legendary New Music Mondays from the 1990s. Well, now is when we start this shebang. While the lineup is still being hashed out, we know for sure that the always challenging BOBB BRUNO will definitely be on the bill, mashing up his favorite beats, samples and prepared jams, along with live electronic drums and bunny suit shennanigans. Expect two more equally incredible acts on top of this, so we'll be keeping you posted on this one. Wed, Nov 25th - CATALYST MAGAZINE presents CURIOUSITY KILLS IILast time the miscreants of CATALYST MAGAZINE hosted a show here, we had nothing but endless good times and only a few blackouts. During one of these blackouts, Lorena Catalyst must have told us the line-up for this show, and now we can't remember. But i guarantee it will be chock full of youthful exuberance and charming young people in the latest fashions. And really aggressive music! Keep an eye out for us regarding the bands so we can mentally prepare. Fri, Nov 27th - LITTLE TEETH + HYENA + FREAKY MOUNTAIN + MOSES CAMPBELL + the CHICKEN-SKIN-RANCH-HAND MARIONNETTESThis show started out being a little troubling, cuz we wanted it to be extra special for our friends in LITTLE TEETH. The last time they were supposed to come down, they were stricken with plague, and we wanted to give them an equally biblical welcome this time. So, to welcome this stunning little freaked-out uke/accordion/drums trio from SF, we gathered together two local ensembles of young genius, as well as a touring solo looper known simply as HYENA, and for good measure, we got a puppet troupe to totally finish you off. Just so you don't miss it, FREAKY MOUNTAIN features members of TOMMY SANTEE KLAWS and CAVE COUNTRY, so don't miss them starting this night off. www.myspace.com/littleteethmusicwww.myspace.com/freakymountainwww.myspace.com/mosescampbellwww.myspace.com/hyenahahawww.myspace.com/tortilaphats Sat, Nov 28th - THE MOORE BROTHERS + THEM HILLS Sun, Nov 29th - ILO MAR + EMILY LACY + DANIEL MUNKUS + GEOFF GEIS
Mon, Nov 30th - FRANKLIN BRUNO + WCKR SPGT + PHIL YATES
Wed, Dec 2nd - MO-ODDS + THE SHAKERS + HIGH LIFE CAVALIER
Thurs, Dec 3rd - SKYGREEN LEOPARDS + WARM CLIMATE +
Fri, Dec 4th - BIG WHUP + WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS + SO MANY WIZARDS + COBRA LILLIES

Thurs, Oct 1st - PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS presents BENEFIT SHOW for NIGHT LIGHT with DOMINIC MASSARO and THURLOW performing
This Thursday Plays Well With Other presents FUTURA, a benefit event that will be an impactful night made up of music and art, with the main focus of bringing awareness to a particular non-profit organization called Nightlight. This Electronica night will consist of DJ Righteous Trash, Thurlow and featuring the LA artist Massaro. Massaro’s songs will seduce you with his haunting, beautiful, broken vocal melodies sung over a brick wall of sea-sick droning guitars. The art will be donated by Sam Gallagher, Dominic Massaro, and Lawton Outlaw, which scale from a combination of color field paintings and mixed media paintings to Gary Baseman meets Andy Warhol; surreal cartoon like content that is fun for the whole family. All of these amazing artists are coming together for the sole reason to help Nightlight. Nightlight rescues women out of prostitution / sex trafficking in Bangkok, Thailand. A very prevalent problem with these rescued women is that have been trafficked often fall back into prostitution. This occurs because they aren't given the opportunity or resources to learn other skills to make a living and survive. That's where Nightlight comes in. They teach the women how to make jewelry then Nightlight sells it in places like the United States and through that funding, these women are given the chance at a new life.

and a different musical group curates a rocking night of the week

THURS, OCT 8th - JACK WILSON JR + LIZ PAPPADEMAS and the LEVEL + RYAN HARRISON and the ORPHANS + KIND CROMANG
9:00 RYAN HARRISON & THE ORPHANS Equal amounts Early Bowie, Stones (roughly chopped), Leonard Cohen. Blend, serve over ice in a wax paper cup from Jack-in-the-Box, 4th + Vermont. It's only rock'n'roll but they like it. So do we.
10:00 LIZ PAPPADEMAS The SF Bay Guardian says about Liz, "Joni Mitchell meets Raymond Carver at a piano bar." The thing is -- as incredible as that may sound -- it's actually pretty goddamn accurate. An honest dedication to song-craft and a killer backing band.
12:00 KIND CROMANG To be perfectly honest, we don't even "get" what Cromang's music is "about," except that it's funky and doesn't try to pretend like rap never happened. Other than that, you've got song titles like "Hezbollah Freak Scene," not to mention homeboy's MySpace comments section is the best YouTube channel we've seen to date.
(blurbs by Matt Eckel of Jack Wilson Jr.)
FRI, OCT 9th - MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY + THE HEALTH CLUB + MAGICK ORCHIDS + THE MORMONS
SAT, OCT 10th - MAD GREGS + LA FOG + LEARNING MUSIC
SUN, OCT 11th - RATS + RED HILL + DAMION ROMERO show starts at 8:30pm

THURS, OCT 15th - JACK WILSON JR. + SETH PETTERSON and the UNDERTOW + TALL TALES and the SILVER LININGS + STEPHANIE REARICK + NATTLESNAKE show starts at 8p
9:00 STEPHANIE REARICK Stephanie is the proprietor of Mother Fool’s in Madison, WI and the lighting rod (or the lightning?) of Madison’s Time Bank, one of the country’s largest. This October she’s playing and singing her way across the country (classical/cabaret/pop); Los Angeles, let’s give her a warm welcome.
10:00 TALL TALES & the SILVER LINING In Ventura County everything is slower, simpler: lighter—because it doesn’t first have to soak up a ton and a half of irony—but also heavier—because you’re able to honestly appraise the full significance of a thing. A tall man with a beautiful deep voice who can write songs in his sleep. Which is kind of how I think he does it.
12:00 SETH PETTERSEN & the UNDERTOW The “yin” to Tall Tales’ “yang.” If Iggy Pop was born in California and not Detroit, and if he liked surfing and fish tacos. Do you like tall cans of beer and surly stand-ups with hearts of gold? Good, you’ll do fine.

FRI, OCT 16th - MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY + FORT WIFE + CROOKED COWBOY + GEORGIE GLASS
SAT, OCT 17th - MAD GREGS + TOMMY SANTEE KLAWS + guests

MON, OCT 19th - NEAL MORGAN + PIT ER PAT + WHQLES + CONCETT9
THURS, OCT 22nd - JACK WILSON JR + DOWNTOWN/UNION + THE DAMSELLES + CMG AND THE NIGHT
9:00 DOWNTOWN/UNION
If you don’t like this band, check your pulse. That’s right, you’re dead. If you can’t remember how or when you died, that’s probably because post-mortem, spirit-world amnesia is one of the side effects of “suck.” That’s right, you suck. I mean, you used to. Hey, so what’s it like being dead? Send me a postcard or something. Zombie.
10:00 THE DAMSELLES & the TC4
Classic 60s girl-group grooves and harmonies. The choreographed dance steps, the matching dresses, the whole thing. Oh, and a support role in a bizarre music video featuring Will Ferrell called “Bat Fight” (“It’s a game of honor and diplomacy…”).
12:00 CMG & WE ARE THE NIGHT
CMG is Carlos Gutierrez—not sure on the middle name (best guess = “Motherfucking”?). The We Are the Night boys hail from Pedro. Their humble charm will catch you off guard, but pay attention (!) there are real-deal songs behind the whole fake gang routine. “Do You Ever Rock’n’Roll Anymore?” CMG does. All the time. The wheat shall be separated from the chaff!

THURS, OCT 29th - JACK WILSON JR + EL INGANNI + JOHN MEEKS + FORT KING
9:00 FORT KING We share with songwriter Ryan Fuller a dual appreciation for the songwriting of Townes Van Zandt and for the Native American “story” that unfortunately (still) gets left out of US “history.” Folk balladry with heart and a real live cello to boot.
10:00 JOHN MEEKS John is an accomplished songwriter and performer, a fixture of the thriving San Diego alt-country scene. He and his banjo pickin’ compadres will break your heart and then put it back together again, twice as good as before.
12:00 EL INGANNI Indie LA’s best-kept secret. Country music with soul; soul with a jagged & raggedy country edge. Always an event, do not miss! We’re putting in our request now for “Baby, I Love You.”
FRI, OCT 30th - MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY + SEASONS + THE SEIZURE + THE BLIND
SAT, OCT 31st - HALLOWEEN with MAD GREGS

ARE YOU CURIOUS SEPT 2009
Alright, September is here!!! That means time for our special friend-curated exhibition, TAKE US THERE along with the group show MAPPING MEMORIES, designed to really look at how space and place are defined by our memories of it or objects within it. September also means another killer set of events, from stunning rock-n-roll on our little carpet to truly innovative adventures like the TAKE US THERE sleepover or bikeride, or our little participation in PARK(ING) DAY with the lovely folks at ECHO PARK TIME BANK (with whom we did the swap meet last month that you all missed)
Fri, Sept 4th - TAKE US THERE / MAPPING MEMORIES opens, with music from DJ MY LITTLE PONY and special performances. 8p to midnight
There’s no other space, like this space, anywhere near this space, so this must be the space.
Echo Curio is pleased to present a collaborative group show featuring works by Alys Kenny, Ben Fino-radin, Brady Gunnell, Bryan Fahrbach, Claire Cronin, Deborah Abramson, Devon Paulson, Evan Everest, Erin Curtis, Jack Lovell, Jason Tovar, Jeffrey De Chausse, Jessica Laser, Jose Luis Hernandez, Lawrence Lewis, Margaret Towner, Michael Hsiung, Neil Freeman, Noah Thomas, Rachel Pitler, Rachel Wood-Rome, Sarah Poole, Taylor Leigh Brittenham, Vicki Dye, and more.
MAPPING MEMORIES A group exhibition that asks us to consider how memories help define space. A site alone has no memory; it is those who interact with it that create meaning. Like lines and points on a keyless map, the contours of a given space have no relevance without the people who bring it to life. Using a variety of media and found objects, artists with varying perspectives examine intersecting layers of space and memory.
TAKE US THERE A cross-country journey that explores the relationship between meaningful spaces, and the people and memories connected to them.
Curated by Christopher Daniels and Nara Hernandez

Sat, Sept 5th - THE RHONE OCCUPATION + ONE TRICK PONY + THE SURRENDERS
Consider this our F U F Y F Fest Fest Fest! THE RHONE OCCUPATION has consistently wowed audiences in our little room, combining the simple songwriting charms of Wilco and the grand guitars of old school Radiohead, and delivered with an uncommon amount of humility and friendliness. This is a band you can bring home to meet Mom, but then they might stay up all night and drink with her, so be careful. ONE TRICK PONY shares many of these same qualities, but replacing the shoe-gazing with drunken Waits-ian dirges and a tinge of darkness that might not go so well with your mom, unless she's Lydia Lunch. THE SURRENDERS have some seriously tropical bones in their funky little bodies, exploring TORTOISE-y waves but adding a deep soulful voice to the mix. You can spend twenty hours standing in the f' u'in sun if you want, but you only need to spend two hours in our sweltering shop and you'll hear just as much killer music, for a quarter of the price.

Sun, Sept 6th - REFRIGERATOR + WCKR SPGT + ADAM LIPMAN + NEAL MORGAN
REFRIGERATOR leaves me speechless. I cannot consider myself as avid of a fan as Jorgen or Justin, but the last time they played here, the night veered from comedy to tragedy back to comedy, and never missed a beat. The brothers, plus the other band members kept this clattering acoustic guitar guided freight train running on between sad lost-love songs, and loud middle-finger raising jams. ADAM LIPMAN also brought his strange mournful charms and deep-as-the-core-of-the-earth voice to the mix. WCKR SPGT gives us a local look at fun-punk, called by some fun-nk (ok, no one calls it that, but they should). Imagine Ween meeting the Descendents, getting smoked out and being fueled by crappy distorted guitars. NEAL MORGAN is joining the bill and opening the night with his totally unique drum and voice alchemy. Imagine Hella with voices instead of guitars, but with the same sick drums, and then make those voices a chorus of smooth soul, just to confuse your brainbox even more.

Wed, Sept 9th - CURIOSITY KILLS NIGHT with NOT THE GOVERNMENT + STAB CITY + NARWAHL PARTY + BASTIDAS
Our good friend(s) at Catalyst Magazine are curating this night of SoCal flavored punk and punk-influenced tomfoolery. From the Brit-inspired, keyboard driven romp of NTG, to the bombastic psych of the threesome BASTIDAS. STAB CITY finally gets the chance to bloody the floor, while newly added NARWAHL PARTY better not poke any holes in the place with their mythical horns, though their heavy Rapture-esque on speed jams will probably do some much needed deconstruction on your hardened heart. Young or old, this night will rekindle the fire in your heart, right before it jabs a big pointy knife into it and slushes it all around.

Thurs, Sept 10th - TAKE US THERE SLUMBER PARTY, co-hosted by DUBLAB
The exhibit currently up explores the travels of our friends across America, and on those travels, they crashed on a lot of couches, floors and strange but welcoming beds. They also had to contend with a myriad of work schedules, house rules, and possible all-night parties. Think of this as your little stay-cation. Come and visit the Curio and stay overnight. There will be various moments of entertainment, maybe some pillowfights, some ghost stories, and definitely a lot of fun reactions from the late night party-ers or the early morning workers walking by.
Here is the gist from the curators themselves... Bring your sleeping bags and pajamas for an overnighter in the gallery space. Assistant curator of MOCA, Christine Robinson, will curate a series of videos; poet Jessica Laser will perform a sleepy time reading; and members of Dub Lab will play a nighttime set, along with other slumber party activities. The evening begins at 9p and will end the next morning with breakfast and coffee from the neighborhood.
Fri, Sept 11th - BATTLEHOOCH + WHQLES + 60 WATT KID + JEFFREY JERUSALEM (opening at 9p)
Tonight is a sort of take-back the PARR-TAAY kind of night. BATTLEHOOCH is joining us from the Bay Area, practically marching into LA with trumpets blaring and funk a-funking. Having fortified their position as the best live act in SF, the HOOCH is moving out in carefully selected concentric circles, like an evangelist with a hunger. Only this evangelist espouses drunken prophecies of sex and hellfire and degenerate jazz. WHQLES (you can call them Whales to their face, this is easier to search online) have been ripping it up here for quite a while, and tonight should be no different. I mean, they zing off STAR TREK IV samples while tearing through the tightest of two man rock-n-roll. And then there is 60 WATT KID. Kevin, Derek, and now young Dylan are pretty much the most crucial and underrated band in Los Angeles at this point. Tireless in their pursuit of the perfect floating moment, endlessly circling the same vocal lines as if calling up ancient dreams and cellular memory. Not to be missed, especially now that we added a short opening performance by the foremost tropical 21st century bar-mitzva electronic artist on the planet.

Sat, Sept 12th - DEREK SCHMIDT + WORRIED MINDS + COSIO + ANITA COATS
DEREK SCHMIDT wowed us when he visited with his massive folk act ALL MY PRETTY ONES, and now he is returning on his own. Well, not really on his own, but with two other super talented folksy folks. ANITA COATS wrings every last bit of heartache and every last breath of hope out of her acoustic guitar and simple but elegant vocal delivery, a modern day Joni Mitchell. COSIO brings together many influences, all under the healing power of the banjo and other Americana instruments, but with a decidely European dramatic style of delivery. Think if Tom Waits got himself a soulful lady singer, who was also in a heavy rock band, and then let her loose. WORRIED MINDS joins us from Claremont, and by the look of 'em, they took the train, in the empty grain car at the back. These two dudes are reformists in all things, even in folk music, drawing not only from the old, but borrowing from the new and even inventing some new tricks in between.

Mon, Sept 14th - GOLDEN HITS + SWEATSON KLANK and AS IS + WARRIOR LINE
GOLDEN HITS is a sort of electronically charged super-group in Los Angeles, made up of deejays and musicians renowned for their collaborative abilities. When these folks (including Mitchell Brown, James Tamborello, Frosty of Dublab, and many others) get together, it is a true meeting of the mind, a droney drifting expansive meeting to say the least. We are beyond psyched for this night, and not only are they going to bring it, but they have two other amazing performances in mind to blow your brain pan.
Here is a little blurb about SWEATSON KLANK, straight from the horse's mouth - "So for those of you wondering, who the f$ck is Sweatson Klank, here's the scoop. When i first started making beats and such in 1996.. I called myself Take One. As a matter of fact, my first 2 releases were under that name (see discography section). Soon enough , I dropped the One, and was just TAKE. Now have you ever tried searching for TAKE in Itunes or on Google? The results aren't pretty, and unless you know the name of a song or album, you're likely to find 3 million results with the word Take in it.. and none of them will be me. That's some Bull$hit when your trying to get heard!! So, in comes SWEATSON KLANK, a name so strange, that there is no trouble finding him. Google that and you're gonna find me. From here on its SWEATSON baby!!! Look out for new releases under that moniker. Till then we'll ease it in with TAKE aka SWEATSON KLANK!! "
Here's a little bit about WARRIOR LINE, just so you know the lineage "Greg from the amazing Oakland band Clip'd Beaks and DJ OonceOonce, who runs Tigerbeat6, have a new project...and it's good. Real Good. Its called Warrior Line. You can check the new track The Long Loop, here. I love the synth drums rolls in this tune. They live in Los Angeles so hopefully they'll do some live gigs at some point. Check um out. " (from http://potionlords.blogspot.com/2009/02/new-music-alert-warrior-line.html)

Tues, Sept 15th - SPACEWAVES + MOLINO + HEAVY WATER EXPERIMENTS
SPACE WAVES is a husband and wife downtempo/psychedelic/shoegaze duo from Portland, influenced by music like Mazzy Star, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, Luna, Galaxie 500, and the Cure, but with a style all their own. MOLINO are hometown heroes in the realm of shoe-gaze, combining a deep love of the guitar fuzz and bass rumble with a strong stern relationship with songwriting. HEAVY WATER EXPERIMENTS is another group of LA buzzheads who play about once every three days, so if you haven’t caught them elsewhere, check em out here. Their heady brew of bass on bass will jar something loose in your soul’s gut.

Wed, Sept 16th - TAKE US THERE POTLUCK and BEER SHOW-N-TELL
Where are you from? What do they eat there? What kind of beer do they drink? Tell us about it. Meet people and find out where they are from. We invite you bring a memorable dish paired with a beer from where you’re from for a potluck and beer-tasting evening. In addition, we ask that you bring a meaningful object for show-and-tell. The evening will conclude with a special performance by artist Claire Cronin. The dinner will begin at 8p.
Fri, Sept 18th - PARK(ING) DAY with ECHO PARK TIME BANK 10a to 1p Location: 1525 Sunset Blvd (in front of Echo Curio & Nuvia's)
Originally created by Rebar, San Francisco art and design collective, PARK(ing) Day is an annual, one-day, global event where artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks.
Echo Park Time Bank members will install plants, comfortable seating and a mini pool. Come drink an horchata from Nuvia's and listen to a live musical performance from Echo Curio!

Fri, Sept 18th - THE ABSYNTHS + NAIMA EARTH + FAMILY TREE ANALOG
More music from the locals, featuring the post-post-post-progressively post-rock sounds of THE ABSYNTHS, fully engulfed in velvety darkness and thorny distortions. Speaking of distortion, we got the kings of it with FAMILY TREE ANALOG, channeling all of our favorite fuzzed out modern rock sounds into one chunky soup. NAIMA EARTH handles it a little more stripped down, but once you start catching their future tales and cryptic lyrics, you'll be hooked.

Sat, Sept 19th - ROCK AND ROLL PERFORMANCE COACHING with TAMMY TOMAHAWK
People leave their homes to come see you – to laugh, to relate, to escape.
It is quite possible you think of yourself as purely a ‘ singer/songwriter [or] musician’ , but let’s face it - at the end of the day---- you are an ENTERTAINER – no matter what your genre may be ---- post-punk, folk, gypsy, hard-core, rap, shoegaze, and on. But what are you really saying with your lyrics, your vocal tone, your melodies, your stage presence, your stance, the way you hold your instrument or mic, your looks at the audience, your conversation with the audience or not , your stagewear, who are you actually talking to in your song.....?
Ultimately, how is your thru-line being communicated to these people that watch and listen to you?
These are just some of the questions that will be tackled in this eye-opening workshop with local musician/singer/entertainer , Tammy Tomahawk. Through a series of exercises, we will explore how to approach your live show with clarity, freshness, and dynamics . We’re not saying all of you have to be like Judy Tenuta – just in your own special way!
Tammy grew up in the theater and ended up in NYU’s Experimental Theatre Wing at 17. Since then she has lived all over the country and Europe, traveled extensively, taught music/theater to developing country youth, written an award-winning rock opera, created and performed both solo and ensemble theatrical works, found herself under stand-up comedy flashlights, done the TV/Film thing, played in and led multiple bands and makes really good salsa. She’s originally from Austin, Texas and currently has two babies—eh, em Bands - Cinderella MOTEL and PomPOM!.

Sat, Sept 19th - GABBY LA LA + THE UKULADY + KIT'N TENDERS + JAVARNANDA + MEGAN JACOBS
Last time Gabby and the Ukulady came through, the ozone layer replenished itself, murder rates dropped to zero and parking control officers actually tore up their tickets. No telling what the wellspring of positivity will do this time around for the people of Southern California. But if you like amazingly cute and concise songs on ukelele, sitar and twisting, twirling voices in harmony, this is your night. Joining the two wondrous ladies will be their good friend JAVARNANDA on earth-shattering guitar and the simply beautiful songwriting of MEGAN JACOBS. (PS. KIT'N TENDERS is the super group of GABBY and THE UKULADY, so hold onto your cats)

Tues, Sept 22nd - THE ROPES + HAPPY BIRTHDAY SECRET WEAPON + YOUNG HUNTING + BLACKBIRD AND THE FEATHERED PEOPLE
A bit of a hodge podge tonight, but rock-n-roll is always a challenge, especially with all the names. Hell, I was just walking down the street and overheard someone on their phone, saying "No, Smokey is the cop... I think... no, Smokey is the crook and Bandit is the ... no, wait, Smokey is cop and Bandit is the thief!" But what is really in a name when it is a great movie, or a great band. So, come and check out the touring electronic duo THE ROPES, or the touring Seattle psych-out rock exploits of HBSW, or the hometown downer rock of YOUNG HUNTING or the exuberantly heavy glam rock of BLACKBIRD AND THE FEATHERED PEOPLE. Any way you slice it, it is rock-n-roll.

Wed, Sept 23rd - TAKE US THERE BIKERIDE
Exploring the memories of Los Angeles by bike-back, the group will traverse the city that is our home and the birthplace of our little gallery. In conjunction with the interactive Los Angeles map in the Take Us There exhibit space, we will set out on a bike ride tracing meaningful spaces in the surrounding neighborhoods. Join us for the bike ride at Echo Curio at 9p.
Thurs, Sept 24th - THE GRIZZLY OWLS + CORREATOWN + MAP
THE GRIZZLY OWLS, from up north in dusty ol' Bakersfield or Fresno or whatever, come across like a musical reimagining of the Great Depression or the Dust Bowl years, as reimagined as a spaghetti western. They return tonight with the lovely and talented Angela Correa, whose ability to spin a yard and wrap our hearts in the weave knows no equal. MAP, despite it's name, is a hard band to track down... so you gotta find out for yourself along with us... so get here early.

Sat, Sept 26th - THE KARABAL NIGHTLIFE + THE HARD TO GET + SHIRLEY ROLLS + guests
THE KARABAL NIGHTLIFE returns to the Echo Park nightlife with a bang, readying to release a new record, and assembling a never-seen-before (here) bill of amazing artists for you and us. THE HARD TO GET have been tearing up the east side for years and we finally get to see their Pixie-esque charms here (though mixed with a little bit of accordion, evidently). SHIRLEY ROLLS seem to have leapt onto the scene very recently, but with a ferocity unmatched. They got a big 21 and over show at Spaceland this week, but if you ain't got that ID, or if you like what you saw, you should come check them out at a space half as big (ok, a quarter as big).

Sun, Sept 27th - CLOSING CEREMONIES for TAKE US THERE 8p
In the closing ceremony participants will take down the roadside memorial. Additional happenings to be announced.
Tues, Sept 29th - MATT VALENTINE and ERIKA ELDER night one with M. GEDDES GENGRAS
Wed,. Sept 30th - MATT VALENTINE and ERIKA ELDER night two with M. GEDDES GENGRAS
Once again, the really really awesome part about this whole “working almost every night at a gallery that barely pays the bills” is the ability to host shows for amazing artists. And once and awhile, we get to host them in conjunction with our good friends performing. Tonight and tomorrow, the Echo Curio will be hosting the finest psych-folk duo of our time, the amazing MV & EE. Having released countless stunning works on their own label as well as Ecstatic Peace, Time Lag and many other labels, MV & EE always move forward with their strange and beguiling mix of noise, Americana, psych and blues.

ARE YOU CURIOUS AUGUST 2009
So, here we are in the dog days of Summer, with no more holidays to look forward to, and only the slowly oscillating fans to dry the sweat. Well, in the midst of the heat, we can offer some hot ways to spend the slightly cooler evenings, as well as the beginning of our afternoon events and classes at the Echo Curio (some of which are courtesy of the ECHO PARK TIME BANK).
Once again, we cannot thank all of you enough for supporting our/your space, as well as the artists who show here, the musicians who play here, and the traveling groups that depend on your donations for their gas and food. We hate to sound like one of those Feed the Children ads but literally, your five bucks goes a long way towards our mortgage, our cracked windows, the empty gas tanks and stomachs of our visiting musicians, and the ongoing reputation of this space as a great place to see and hear great music and art. So thank you, thank you, thank you.
Tuesday, August 4th - ART DROP for IMAGINARYLAND : RAINBOWS AND UNICORNS exhibition 7p to 10p
Ok, so come Tuesday, we need the tornado to take your art from OZ to us, from the magical realms over the rainbow to our little shop. We need your fantasies to fill our walls.
Friday, August 7th - IMAGINARYLAND : RAINBOWS and UNICORNS opens Free opening from 8p to midnight
Unleash the rainbow and dive headfirst into the worlds of imagination. Get cozy with some mystic beasts, hear some smooth jams and drink some vino while browsing the magical halls of fun and art.
Saturday, August 8th - RAVEN AMERICA + MOTH EATEN + MERMAID + BASTIDAS + ANUS KINGS + LAS SANGRONAS Y EL CABRON
Our buddies in the art-goth-damaged RAVEN AMERICA and MOTH EATEN are curating the night tonight, and they are going all out, from the rock-n-psych of the always rewarding BASTIDAS to the visiting punk fun of MERMAID (These ladies killed us last time they visited, and we expect tonight to be no different). The remaining acts speak for themselves, but it would much better to hear it from their screaming lips.

Sunday, August 9th - STATIC AKTION presents PULSE EMITTER + GRASSLUNG + EARN + MONSTURO + DAMION ROMERO
Heavy doses of drone from a synth heavy, PULSE EMITTER is set to blast your mind with a slow motion wash of waves and forms. Touring with him is GRASSLUNG, another big deal in pure-synth waves. Spreading the local welcome mat are the inimitable DAMION ROMERO, the monstrous MONSTURO and the blissfully serene EARN. Another classic night of challenging tones from the master of (organized) disaster, Mike of Static Aktion.

Tuesday, August 11th - THE LITTLEST VIKING + SIGNAL HILL + BEWARE OF SAFETY
THE LITTLEST VIKING rules, like in that special way headbanging and playing air guitar to Judas Priest songs rules. But their music is actually a lot more technical, so imagine headbanging to Don Caballero or Orthrelm, while trying to play that super intricate shit. BEWARE OF SAFETY is gonna bring you to tears with their multi-pedal chorus of sprawling guitars and post-rock sensibilities. And SIGNAL HILL collects together those smooth Mogwai meets Tristeza kind of vibes, but with a better pop sensibility to it. Ah, we have the whole range of the 90’s here.

Friday, August 14th - DEF SOUND + DAVID LIEBE HART and ADAM PAPPAGAN + BIG WHUP
This Friday is gonna be a big night of weird fun that is gonna rule. DEF SOUND is (please forgive the hyperbole) a dope new indie rapper, complete with a five piece band. Add to that the magical troubdours DAVID and ADAM, complete with their puppet background singers, and that is only two thirds of the evening. We also got the outrageously awesome BIG WHUP, official party band of 2012.

Saturday, August 15th - DUNG MUMMY featuring HOP FROG KOLLECTIV + AIN SOPH AUR + BLIPVERT + MOTHER OF FIRE
Get ready for another wondrous evening of eclectic electronica and avant acoustics. DUNG MUMMY is a semi-monthly event put on by the fine folks of the HOP FROG KOLLECTIV and URCK RECORDS. After witnessing their monumental musical dust storm down by the lake, we’re excited beyond words for the HOP FROG’s multi-guitar/synth return to our little gallery. They have been kind enough to open their show to a visiting east coast roots rock outfit MOTHER OF FIRE.

Sunday, August 16th - CHICKSTER TAKES VAUDEVILLE SHOW featuring VERONIQUE CHEVALIER and much more
Comedy runs in the family. We’ve been happy to host amazingly uproarious shows with April and Adam Shenkman, and now we’re happy to welcome to host their father, in his CHICKSTER persona. He has prepared a complete evening of vaudevillian grandeur. Stay tuned for more details.
Monday, August 17th - LOVERS + THE BLACK KITES + THE CARTOGRAPHERS
We got an amazing line-up of bands tonight, all sharing in deep beats, shimmering synths, soaring guitars, and these ladies (and occasional dude) can really sing too. LOVERS from up north came by last year and floored us with their new three piece line-up. We can only say that if you miss this show, you will be doing your music loving soul a disservice. THE BLACK KITES are back with us all again, after a short break, and I am betting you that it was a break for the better and that when their fuzzy fog of distortion and bass hits you, a smile will wash over your slowly dancing form. THE CARTOGRAPHERS need no introduction because they have been here a couple of times, and everytime they run in at the last minute and set their gear up, they instantly command the room and hit us with some of the best "angular electro-guitar" songwriting today (think TV ON THE RADIO with a little more shoegaze in there).

Tuesday, August 18th - DEPT OF REAL ESTATE + MOTOKO HONDA and JOE BERARDI + DOS (Mike Watt and Kira Roessler)
Kio Griffith and company bring their clattering, jazz-infused instrumentals to the Curio tonight, full of sprawling distorted guitars, tricked out drums and stumbling funk basslines. Joining DEPARTMENT OF REAL ESTATE are real-deal of LA improvisation, the deceptively heavy keyboards and noise squonk of MOTOKO HONDA and the effortless drum majesty of JOE BERARDI (proverbial drummer to the alternate stars). And opening the whole night, so get your butt there early, will be DOS, the double bass majesty of Mike Watt and Kira Roessler. DANG!!!!.

Thursday, August 20th - AL QAEDA (featuring MIKE WATT) + ENDOMETRIUM CxPx + DROUGHTER + ULTRAVIOLET ASTRONAUT
We kinda don’t know what to expect with this one, but it is gonna rule. I mean we have MIKE freakin’ WATT sitting in with a most prolific new noise collective. ENDOMETRIUM CxPx is back for more deep drone and frosty waves. Joining the cast are two new faces in our space, the cryptic harsh fuzz of DROUGHTER, and the noisey beats of ULTRAVIOLET ASTRONAUT. We know sometimes experimental sound can be a little scary, but if you really want to look into the weeping eye of innovation, this is your best chance.

Friday, August 21st - SHOTGUN SHOWDOWN + THE CARTOGRAPHERS + SHATTO
Our second ladies night of the week, this one not only marks the return of the phenomenally catchy post-pop of the CARTOGRAPHERS, but the return of the ballsy rock of SHOTGUN SHOWDOWN. Last time SS played, I swear they were channeling the Jesus Lizard or Helmet through their sweating fingers, swirling distortions, and bullhorn blasting vocals. SHATTO is a blank slate, but if these ladies like ‘em, we’re in. They are have been hailed as a new, poppier CURE and we're pretty psyched.

Sat, August 22nd - EAGLE AND TALON + VIDEO + SUPER ALL-STAR COVER SESSION of the THRACIAN album
This falls in the category of "About M'F'n time". It is crazy that EAGLE AND TALON haven't played here yet, if not simply for the fact that they rule the world with a gentle but stern hand. But also because they were one of the first acts I saw in LA when I moved here, and they continue to kill me to this day every time I see them perform. Mind you, it has been awhile but I have no doubt that it will be like old times, except with completely new and challenging songs. You see, this duo writes the most innovative pop songs, using the most unlikely of elements. A crazy mismatched drumline, a wildly out-there keyboard part, some insane non-repeating chorus. All of it comes together with an ominously sweet persona to create the ultimate concert experience, here for you to experience up close and personal on the rug. VIDEO keeps on rocking us too, in that strangely uncomfortable way. And the bonus of the night is a cavalcade of talented friends covering various songs off of EAT's new record (that has been out for like eight months but this is their record release party.... go figure)

Sun, August 23rd - STATIC AKTION presents PHARMAKON + RALE + INFINITE BODY + PEDESTRIAN DEPOSIT + MIRROR TO MIRROR
Mike of STATIC AKTION pretty much knows the best people, throws some of the best parties, and really runs the show like a pro, (and makes a mean veggie taco), so tonight is going to be no exception. While we never felt comfortable with the term POWER NOISE or HARSH ELECTRONICS or whatever, we're still really excited for this collection of vibrational masters. We wept tears of joy when the cold darkness of EMACIATOR transformed into the dark-star moth wings of PEDESTRIAN DEPOSIT. We shielded our eyes in holy revernence to the blinding sounds of INFINITE BODY. We stand ready and waiting to have our nervous system assaulted blissfully by NY's PHARMAKON and our local (by way of Oaktown) sound alchemist RALE. All in all, expect some deep cellular level meditations and some chromosomal awakenings.

Monday, August 24th - MARIEE SIOUX + GRAHAM FORREST + PAIGE STARK + DEAREST
Powerful forces of magic and mystery will be moving tonight, deep elemental callings and shamanistic notes of the earth and sky. With MARIEE SIOUX acting as high priestess of the gentle, warm night, and GRAHAM FORREST summoning the dark folk like a grand hierophant, we seem to be holding the trump cards in this tarot deck this evening. Adding to the incantations are the lovely PAIGE STARK and the traveling troubadours DEAREST, spreading the psychedelia across America like mad Johnny Appleseeds.

Tuesday, August 25th - JAMES MISHKA + CHAZ PRYMEK + MUCKY THE DUCKY + NICOLE KIDMAN + THE NEXTDOOR NEIGHBORS
Ok, this one is gonna rule. We got two acoustic guitar playing bike riders from Salt Lake City (JAMES and CHAZ). Seriously, they rode all the way from SLC and are doing a west coast tour on bike. So come and hear their songs. Add to that the meditative waves of Davis' MUCKY THE DUCKY and the plaintive electronics of NICOLE KIDMAN (straight outta Covina, beeeatches!!!!, and first time in our space) and you should be sold. But we'll sweeten the deal with one of the most amazing electro pop groups to come out of Olympia, let alone Washington State. Think of the music unicorns would make with Casios and drum machines.

Wednesday, August 26th - SOGGY DUCHAMP OCTET + NAME OF THE MOON + MIMES OF WINE
SOGGY DUCHAMP creates jazz music for the unconscious soul, rather than the waking thinking mind. It is best to enter a trance and let the undulating rhythms and cacaphonous surprises take you. The boys throw in a fair amount of spacious ether, capricious electronics, and copious funk to their mix, so grab a seat but be ready to jump up and dance. NAME OF THE MOON has been a mystery to us for too long, and soon it will be uncovered, with its deep realms of minimalist electronics and strange soundtracks.. MIMES OF WINE returns to America from their (partial) homeland in Italy, ready to bring us down into the darkness with their piano and violin masterpieces. Who knows what this night will bring otherwise, dark magick indeed!

Thursday, August 27th - WOODS + BEST COAST + GARBAJ KAETZ + LA FOG + guests
Man, we are so close to finalizing this night with regards to the opening act, but trust me, it is gonna rule either way. WOODS returns to the Echo Curio for the third time and this is gonna be the charm. Their newest jams kill so squarely, i am worried for our safety. Expect to fall madly in love instantly with this cracked form of pop music, as well as the strange surf of Bethany and Bobb as BEST COAST. GARBAJ KAETZ are new to the space, but not to your brainpan and they are going to be closing down the space tonight (hopefully not literally). Their primal new wave is locked somewhere in the dinosaur part of your genes, locked deep in your basement with the old Hustler magazines and Colt 45 cans. And just as a little breath of totally killer fresh air, we present the completely enthralling LA FOG, easily the greatest chamber ensemble LA has to offer. No telling what is gonna start the night off, but you will not want to miss this show from the very beginning.

Friday, August 28th - ADAM WILLETTS + M. GEDDES GENGRAS + YEK KOO + VSLS
YEK KOO is the musical alter ego of Helga from METAL ROUGE, and if you think it is only going to be half as incredible as METAL ROUGE is, then you need to rework the math. M GEDDES GENGRAS, another gifted collaborator, also creates some of the deepest drones and expansive expressions of percussion and electronics that this city has seen in a great while. Visiting noise merchant ADAM WILLETTS continues the METAL ROUGE FOREIGN EXCHANGE PROGRAM, and promises to squeeze every last drop of sonic grandeur from his laptop. And the always challenging Travis Johns of PINK CANOES returns to the Curio as his solo persona VSLS, ready to deal some damage with his tweaked out set up.

Saturday, August 29th - BLAINE CAMPBELL + RUTHANN FRIEDMAN + HELENE RENAUT
This is pretty much the Monsters of Folk tour, right here in our little gallery. HELENE RENAUT summons down angelic hosts with her singularly charming voice, while RUTHANN FRIEDMAN has been opening minds for years now and we couldn’t be happier to have her back. BLAINE CAMPBELL is a newer face on the block but we are really excited for this evening all the same.

Sunday, August 30th - PUMICE + METAL ROUGE + ING + SLEEPWALKERS LOCAL + GREG MUON
Those rascals in METAL ROUGE do it to us everytime. Not only do they create some of the most challenging/rewarding music these days (imagine a good SONIC YOUTH that never learned pop music), but they are also the friendliest with the most out-there musicians. Well, tonight, they are presenting the second of their two curated shows for August, and this shit is off the hook (pardon my french). PUMICE has been rocking (?) the land down under for years, occasionally coming up here for some sick tours with GHOSTING and the like. In addition to the dreamy drifting tones of SLEEPWALKERS LOCAL, we got GREG MUON of the completely enthralling THUJA, to add to the majesty of this evening.

BEST PRACTICES FOR BOOKING AN ECHO CURIO SHOW
There are a couple of ways you can do it. 1. You have a specific night in mind, with a specific bill of bands (maybe some are touring, maybe not). You email us at echocurio@gmail.com to see if date is open. If it is, we book it and the magic starts. That being said, we're booked alot of the time.. so it might be a long procedure of you writing, us saying no, you writing and us saying no. keep at it, mama didn't raise no quitters. 2. You write us at echocurio@gmail.com and say "hey, i am so and so, and i play such and such, can i play sometime" - this is probably the easiest way to write us, but also the least likely to get a response right away. We are looking to fill certain dates and usually people who choose option #1 have written us already and the nights are full.. we'll definitely try to find a spot for you but there aren't any promises. We get fifteen to twenty emails a day for booking. 3. You drop off a cd , preferably not while we're doing sound for another act playing right then or trying to take donations at the door, and then you follow up with an email reminding us (cuz we are bad with remembering things) and we proceed with option #1 or 2 depending on if you know when you want to play. Should you try to book a show at the Echo Curio?yes, but not right now... start sending emails or letters or whatever October 1st. We are not adding anything else to our books right now unless it is completely time-sensitive, like touring acts from out of the country. Only send emails to echocurio@gmail.com, please!!!!! write us here and we can't guarantee anything. Also, and we say this alot, we're not going to book really loud stuff (like three chord punk or screamo or pure harsh power noise) . I know, sometimes we do have it here. but that is part of either prior commitments made or because once in a while, we like loud music (we were young once). Don't get all irate about it, go start your own punk club. We will try to be more up front about it too in the booking process. We're not judging, it is just a physical reality of our small space and our proximity to neighbors and cops. I wrote and you didn't answer me. Do you hate my music?Honestly, we try to write everyone back, even if it is to say "no, we're booked" or "no, your eight piece heavy rock ensemble might not be the best choice for our 20x20 art gallery". If we missed responding to you, we apologize. Write us again if you want. I am a neighbor and you guys are all about neighborhood, right? Why won't you book my ska-punk band?We love neighbors. They are ones that don't call the cops when we are loud. We want to have tons of music here but we also want to make sure that we take care of our neighbors in Oregon, Texas, Florida, England, Switzerland and parts east or west. We have limited time to present these shows and do what we can to make them cohesive and fun. That means that if we ever have a ska-punk night, we'll hopefully remember to give you a ring for the show, cuz we do love neighbors. But it is unlikely we'll have one cuz we don't operate the biggest of spaces. Remember when we talked about booking a show when I came by the space last week?First off, thanks so much for coming by. It means alot that the musicians of LA see other people play and aren't totally focused on their own "success". Second off, we probably don't remember because we have a horrible memory and while we love running this space, it is really a fraction of what we have to do. So, get on the email and talk to us electronicallly so we have an unfaltering record of what we talked about. it will help us all.

ARE YOU CURIOUS JULY 2009 Greetings folks, and welcome to what could be our 30th newsletter, if we had been writing them early on… We are still beyond honored to be a place you like to come to, to bring your art, to see others art, to laugh with us, to sweat with us. We know we ain’t the prettiest place, we don’t have drink specials or free residencies, but we got love, boundless love for everyone (except for those that maybe talk us out our love, or perhaps crack our windows or break our toilet, but I digress). Anyhow, what I am trying to say is that ECHO CURIO is gearing up for the best rest of 2009 possible. We are curating a second music stage/art tent for the ECHO PARK COMMUNITY FESTIVAL on July 11th and 12th. We are hosting local clothing designers and re-thinkers MAKE/SHIFT in our space during this time as well, so definitely cruise on down the block and check out the actual neighborhood while you’re there. We’re getting ready for a sick OCTOBER ( I will spare you the ROCKTOBER references) and all I can say is that we are finally going to do our own residencies in October, both with musicians and artists… so stay tuned. EVENTS FOR JULY 2009 Unless noted, all events begin at 9p and have a 5 dollar suggested donation. Think of this donation as your way to be a patron of the arts, to support art and music and the spaces it occurs in and the people who provide the art and music. For that, we thank you. Thursday, July 2nd - HELL KITE + HAIKU AMBULANCE + CONSCIOUS SUMMARY + TAN DOLLAR + a special screening of "RIPE" by JESSIE KAHNWEILER Starting the evening with a short film, partially staged in our lovely gallery, we will delve together into the world we live in, the world we witness every day and in some ways help to create. Deep, huh? Well, to add to this deepness is the sometimes harrowing, sometimes hallulah-riffic voice of Ann Marie Phillips, as her alter ego HELL KITE. There is a reason she always gets compared to Scout Niblett or Cat Power, but there is something wholly different and wholly stronger in HELL KITE’s songs. Plus you’re never going to hear her cover shitty Rolling Stones songs or Amazing Grace or some shit. Touring with her is the sludgy pop duo HAIKU AMBULANCE, channeling equal parts GUIDED BY VOICES and MELVINS through their guitar, drums and dual voice attack. CONSCIOUS SUMMARY is a multi-member octopus of drone sounds and tranquil blurs, sometimes erupting into jazz drum breakouts and breaking back down into watery depths. Consider it a musical version of an EKG, sometimes flat-lining and sometimes having a massive coronary. TAN DOLLAR is the new project from the awesome Liz and Chris (of HORSE HEAD fame), and it seems to merge synth sounds with infinite looped vocals and strange distortions. www.myspace.com/hellkitemusic .. www.myspace.com/haikuambulance .. www.myspace.com/conscioussummary .. www.myspace.com/tandollar .. Sunday, July 5th - VOCO + FRANK FAIRFIELD + HOMESICK ELEPHANT + TRIPLE CHICKEN FOOT 8p doors What once was going to be a night with two stupendous artists playing has morphed into a night of four spectacular monsters of folk (if that is possible). Lock up your daughters and sons, cuz it is gonna be a hoedown. From the haunting and sometimes haunted sturm und twang of FRANK FAIRFIELD (first time at the curio), to the return of our favorite lovie-dovie duo HOMESICK ELEPHANT (remind them to pick up their merch suitcase this time, and pick up some of their monographed wine glasses!!!!). But the piece de resistance will be the ladies of VOCO as they turn the air itself into sweet sweet sound, just with their voices. And then we got the FOOT to take it all back to basics with a nice little hootenanny send-off. www.myspace.com/vocoinfo .. www.myspace.com/homesickelephant .. www.myspace.com/frankfairfield .. www.triplechickenfoot.com .. Monday, July 6th - TOMMY SANTEE KLAWS + MARSHWEED + ELISA FERRARI The KLAWS is definitely like a time machine of music, stuck on several different parts of the 70s, drawing from Neil Young, CSN, Mommas and the Poppas, the (good) Eagles, and pretty much any form of California folk rock you can imagine. Thankfully, they have forgone all the Yacht rock accoutrements that some mistakenly see as nostalgia. Instead, it is honest to goodness songwriting, performed with the purest of feeling. MARSHWEED performed wholly acoustic last time, and the sisters definitely brought the room, and possibly even traffic outside to a standstill. Expect more of the same tonight, but be ready for something different as well. And joining us as part of her west coast tour is the amazing ELISA FERRARI and her band of dark folksters. Marrying something part jazz and part country folk, Elisa’s voice weaves it all together into a complete rug, soft enough to fall asleep upon, but still filled with mysteries to make you dream. www.myspace.com/tommysanteeklaws .. www.myspace.com/marshweed .. www.elisaferrarimusic.com .. Tuesday, July 7th - ART DROP for our FUZZY MATH SHOW (5x7 = $30) 7p to 10p Our second 5x7 show. Let’s go over it again. Artwork is all of the same basic size, in frame or out. 5 inches by 7 inches, or 7 inches by 5 inches… the third dimension is your choice. Then the work must also sell for $30, no more and no less. So make it count. Friday, July 10th - FUZZY MATH exhibition opens 8p to midnight FREE Get ready for this show because we got a lot of work last time we did this, and no telling what kind of crazy geometry will take over the walls when this show goes up. Come enjoy inexpensive art, free wine and possibly some snacks. Also opening this month is a commemorative art show in our backroom. The artist was the mother of our good friend Kevin Litrow. She unfortunately passed away the beginning of this year, but we have some of her paintings on display for the month of July. There will also be an acoustic performance by Kevin Litrow of 60 WATT KID at 10:30pm. Saturday July 11th - MAKE/SHIFT takes over the ECHO CURIO (noon to 6p) while ECHO CURIO takes over ECHO PARK LAKE (noon to 7p) Come and visit our new friends Suzanne and Jillian as they host one of their first pop-up store events for their MAKE/SHIFT clothing line. They are redesigning and recycling beautiful clothes into even more beautiful clothes, for less!!!! Two days to check them out, get to it. While you are in the area, you might as well come down to the lake and check out our second stage aka THE LOTUS TENT, where there will be much music and as always hands-on art making led by the Curians. Come by and say hi, check out your friends’ friend’s band, meet some new friends… that is what festivals are for. www.makeshiftworkshop.com .. www.echoparkfestival.com .. Saturday, July 11th - Evening Show with THE SCREAMING CHERRY BLOSSOMS + LET GO OF THE RAIL + SERIOUS HEART ATTACK + FULL FRONTAL doors at 9p Intense but tuneful rock-n-roll from Brooklyn, the Great Lakes, and of course, two right here from LA. Tonight will mark the debut of LET GO OF THE RAIL, a curiously avant-garde group headed by Wilton of NOT THE GOVERNMENT fame. THE SCREAMING CHERRY BLOSSOMS are visiting from the Midwest and bringing some vintage jams with them (imagine Breeders colliding with old Soul Asylum). SERIOUS HEART ATTACK brings the noise in a whole other fashion, with chiming guitars and immense breakdowns. FULL FRONTAL will make you miss the days of the good Gang of Four and Wire albums. Grab a brew and start rocking. www.myspace.com/thescreamingcherryblossoms .. www.myspace.com/letgooftherail .. www.myspace.com/seriousheartattack .. Sunday, July 12th - MAKE/SHIFT continues it's ECHO CURIO residency (noon to 6p) while ECHO CURIO continues its LOTUS STAGE at ECHO PARK COMMUNITY FEST (noon to 7p) If you didn’t come out Saturday, might as well drop by today. If you did come out Saturday, we think maybe you’d like to come out Sunday too. Sunday, July 12th - Evening Show with DOTTIE GROSSMAN / MICHAEL VLATKOVICH + ANNA HOMLER + EMILY HAY doors at 9p Another evening that the Echo Curio was made for, the expansion of minds and the collection of artists branching out into new directions, taking us along for the ride. DOROTHEA GROSSMAN and MICHAEL VLATKOVICH present poetry and creative new music (a la improvised trombone) in a unique "call and response" format. The aesthetic range the duo covers is enormous -- combining engaging and original poetry with on-the-spot musical improvisations of an almost infinite variety. EMILY HAY and ANNA HOMLER both bring the human voice into the 21st century and possibly beyond, certainly crossing a few dimensions along the way. www.pfmentum.com .. www.emilyhay.com .. www.annahomler.com .. Wed, July 15th - EVAN WAY + BRITTAIN ASHFORD + REJOUISSANCE + RED TAG RUMMAGE SALE Tonight is a sort of a worlds colliding kind of night. But instead of fiery destruction and immense loss of life, this one is going to probably increase your smile and your record collection as you scramble for these bands’ merch. Starting with the obvious, the grand poo-bah of the evening is the PARSON RED HEADS lead singer EVAN WAY, breaking out into his solo jams tonight. He has brought a very special artist from the east coast, the lovely and talented BRITTAIN ASHFORD, who is gonna crush you with sweetness. Joining them are two other east coast acts, brought by my good friend and super dude Jim Heffernan, RED TAG RUMMAGE SALE and Jim’s own REJOUISSANCE. RED TAG RUMMAGE SALE takes fairly folky instrumentation, like cello and uke and transforms it into almost post-punk proportions. REJOUISSANCE makes no bones about it’s punk past, but just as FUGAZI can give way to the EVENS, the heavy gives way to the thoughtful and still gripping music of this upstate favorite. www.brittainashford.com .. www.myspace.com/evanway .. www.myspace.com/rejouissance .. www.myspace.com/redtagrummagesale .. www.timetooperate.com .. Thursday, July 16th - SPIRES + FRENCH SEMESTER + TALL TALES Another spectacular night of songwriting by folks from our northern neighbors. SPIRES revel in the strange realm between sad and not-so-sad, wringing every last melancholy note out of their electric guitars. TALL TALES on the other hand takes the Americana past, present and future and blends them together into an unforgettable sound, timeless as well as simple. FRENCH SEMESTER rule in a completely different way and you should just come and check it out for yourselves. www.myspace.com/thespires .. www.myspace.com/thefrenchsemester .. www.myspace.com/talltalesmusic.com .. www.beehouserecords.com .. Friday, July 17th - CRATER FARMER + guests CRATER FARMER is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. So is this evening. More to come. www.myspace.com/craterfarmer .. Saturday, July 18th - +DOG+ + AMK + BAVAB BAVAB + THE SIBLEYS + SLEEPWALKERS LOCAL + TREASURE MAMMAL Experiment with us tonight, from the newly revised vibrational therapy of SLEEPWALKERS LOCAL (hey, that’s me) to the heavy darkness of +DOG+ (those + signs always made us love them more). BAVAB BAVAB really took the cake with two days of delay sampling and copious guest stars and we only can guess what they will do tonight. TREASURE MAMMAL will make you sweat like a mug! www.phantomlimbrecordings.com .. www.myspace.com/thesibleys .. www.loveearthmusic.com .. www.myspace.com/bavabbavab .. Sunday, July 19th - DEAD WESTERN + FEATHERBEARD + PRIVATE BEACH FEATHERBEARD ruled the AZALIA SNAIL birthday party and now he is back to bring his mystical ukulele and beard to our earthly plane again. Joining him is the stunning and equally creepy DEAD WESTERN, who possibly has the deepest voice we have ever heard. And then to make the night totally complete, we have the beautiful and fragile pop of PRIVATE BEACH (check out the intense tremolo on their myspace tracks) www.myspace.com/50690003 .. www.myspace.com/featherbeard .. www.myspace.com/privatebeach1 .. Tuesday, July 21st - THE BLACK HOLLIES + PAPILLON + guests Oh, the Sixties never sounded so good… First off, you got the classic guitars, the classic keyboards, and of course, the classic effects pedals. Then you have the classic songwriting, although now, there is a whole forty years of songwriting to add to the mix. THE BLACK HOLLIES, featuring members of the Rye Coalition (rock-n-roll anyone), are gonna make you hear the Sixties in a whole new way. PAPILLON endeavors to bring out the leopard coated late 70s, merging porn soundtracks with Tortoise-esque bass and synth jams. Think of it as a musical journey through the ages. www.theblackhollies.com .. www.papillonwerks.com .. Thurs, July 23rd - L.A. UNDERGROUND presents CARLA WERNER + PHOENIX AND THE TURTLE + THE NOCTURNES Not only do we get to help put on amazing shows and show amazing art, but we get to help amazing people like the folks at LA UNDERGROUND put on amazing shows like this one. Not only do we get to welcome back the lovely and talented CARLA WERNER and our former neighbors THE NOCTURNES, we get to check out the PHOENIX AND THE TURTLE, an ever-changing group of artists that have been around a long while and remained completely underrated. www.myspace.com/carlawerner www.myspace.com/phoenixandtheturtle www.myspace.com/thenocturnesmusic Fri, July 24th - LEAVING RECORDS SHOWCASE with MATTHEW DAVID + friends MATTHEW DAVID mangles tape in such a loving way, and when you get a chance to witness him doing it live, sampling bells and bowed strings in realtime, it will blow your mind and open your heart. www.myspace.com/matthewdavid .. www.leavingrecords.com .. Sat, July 25th - SEASONS + ELIZA RICKMAN + MARVELOUS TOY + SPECIAL SPECIAL GUESTS SEASONS could possibly be the best thing Highland Park has ever produced, next to La Estrella hot sauce and the classic years of Arlo’s open mic at Mr. T’s Bowl. But unlike those other two, SEASONS can actually pack up and come to visit in Echo Park. Tonight, they have curated a night of magic, with their friends MARVELOUS TOY and ELIZA RICKMAN (both of which we have yet to see, so we’re totally psyched), and a totally killer special secret guest (did I mention they were special… if you miss this, you will definitely read about it in every single music blog and shake your head in frustration and shame). www.myspace.com/sseasons .. www.myspace.com/marveloustoy .. www.elizarickman.com Sunday, July 26th - PAM SHAFFER + THE BLANK TAPES + LE SWITCH (acoustic) I missed Pam’s last show, her EP release party, and for that, I am eternally sorry. Not a chance that I am missing this show. Add to the blend the simple pleasures of a BLANK TAPES show and you really shouldn’t miss this one as well. www.myspace.com/pamshaffermusic .. www.myspace.com/theblanktapes ..
Monday, July 27th - TINY VIPERS + LAZARUS + NIGHT CANOPY + DAMEON LEE Pretty much the biggest show (in my opinion) that we have ever had here, and we know the reason(s) why. TINY VIPERS, aka Jesy Fortino makes the biggest music around today, but presents it in possibly the smallest form possible, that of the solo singer/songwriter. Joining her is one of my favorite songwriters of the 2000s, Mr. Trevor Montgomery aka LAZARUS. Back from his time with Tarentel, to his incredible albums on Temporary Residence, LAZARUS has grown from weird folk artist to someone who channels not only the raw intensity of Springsteen’s Nebraska but also his E Street Shuffle jams, all in a quiet hush of intense gravity. NIGHT CANOPY and mr. DAMEON LEE have evidently joined up with the stunning BIG EAGLE, but tonight, they are going to go solo and show us what Los Angeles songwriting is all about (even though they are both transplants as well). www.myspace.com/tinyvipersss www.temporaryresidence.com www.thewayofthehumanbeing.blogspot.com www.myspace.com/nightcanopy Tues, July 28th - TRI-LINGUAL RECORDS presents a night of round robin with MORGAN ORION and the CONSTELLATIONS + HANK + JACK F.E. and the VERBING NOUNS + MOREEATS + BUNNY ZEWT SUIT You pretty much have to check out all of these artists, as they represent the entire spectrum of music today, from folk to funk to rock to everything else. All in small doses. www.myspace.com/morganorion www.myspace.com/jackfe www.myspace.com/moreeats www.myspace.com/theyvegotcamels www.myspace.com/jillianleighandherguitar Thurs, July 30th - KEVIN GREENSPON + PRAYOLA + RUNNERS + MEGAWAND + ANCIENT CRUX A tour kick-off party for troubadour of our troubled times KEVIN GREENSPON, pedal mangling droners PRAYOLA (features members of WARM CLIMATE and (VxPxC)) and the constantly evolving electro-terrorists RUNNERS. Tonight, on the eve of their great journey, they join forces with the equal parts alluring and revolting electro-jams of MEGAWAND, and the super rad songwriting of ANCIENT CRUX (not a black metal band, though it certainly sounds like it). www.myspace.com/kevingreenspon .. www.familytimemusic.wordpress.com/ .. www.myspace.com/951punx .. www.myspace.com/megawand .. www.phantomlimbrecordings.com .. We know that many of our patrons are into food, and the co-op is going to be a great opportunity for us to get fresh bulk items and share in the bounty. Their next meeting/potluck is this Sunday, June 7th at 7pm. 112 N. Avenue 58, LA, CA 90042. We will be there, hopefully you will too. And finally, Sunday, June 21st , at 5:00 p.m. (right after our special afternoon show with JULIANNA BARWICK and special guests), DEAN WAREHAM (of G500 and Luna) is speaking at SKYLIGHT BOOKS in not-too-distant Los Feliz. He just put out a book entitled BLACK POSTCARDS : A ROCK n ROLL ROMANCE. Go see him speak and ask him if he wrote about his romance with his own ego. Just kidding, we love the dude. Wish we could con him into playing a show at the Curio. A full range of way-out and way-in artists will baffle, hustle, and dazzle you with their sonic alchemy. Take that, Mr. Wizard! (and BLUE TAPE RED TAPE's performance marks the return of young DYLAN DOREN, our favorite keyboard twister and fervent advocate of 1519 SUNSET!!!) www.myspace.com/xdugefwww.myspace.com/sabreteethwww.myspace.com/bluetaperedtapehttp://cts.vresp.com/c/?EchoParkCuriositySho/f86cfa728a/TEST/4e4adb7645Monday, June 15th AURES + EXOTIC BOULDERS + EZRA BUCHLA + ZNAYUOne disadvantage of the small space is we have to avoid some acts we normally would love to have. TECUMSEH is just one of those acts so massively bleak, that we would worry about our neighbors' kids if they played here. But now that we have his other amazing project, the drifting and ethereal AURES, we can finally say YES YES, a thousand times YES!!! And they have upped the ante with the spectacular EZRA BUCHLA (of GOWNS and MONSTRO fame), ZNAYU (our very own friendly neighborhood circuit bender ANDY BEN and company), and the esoteric and eclectic ensemble EXOTIC BOULDERS (featuring Joseph Hammer, Mitchell Brown, Johannes Bergmark, and Damian Bisciglia). www.melonexpander.comwww.bergmark.orgTuesday, June 16th HEADLIGHT + CAPILLARY ACTION + 60 WATT KID + HOWARDaMB 8p start time
Music from the body, the electric devices, and from the handcrafted wood and metal of the earth. We got music from all these sources tonight, jumbled together and cross-pollinated into a huge hearty stew. CAPILLARY ACTION visits us from the East Coast, bringing its all acoustic avant-prog-pop to our little rug, joining the always energetic and transcendent electrified fuzz of 60 WATT KID. HEADLIGHT returns (with a new and improved name, but all the same intense soundcrafting you remember from his previous LIGHT SHOW performance), and starting the whole thing off is one of our favorite LA bands, HOWARDaMB, complete with synth drums and vocoded voice. How can something so real come from something so fake www.myspace.com/capillaryactionwww.myspace.com/inglightswww.myspace.com/howardambWednesday, June 17th ROBOTANISTS + THE LYNX TECHNIQUE + THE RHONE OCCUPATIONMan, I had this whole thing written about the "the" in bands, but then I realized ROBOTANISTS don't have a "the"... Well, that is the only difference between them and the two other acts tonight... Otherwise, expect a uniformly high level of amazing music, beautiful people, and good times. All three of these acts are some of the hard-working promoters/writers/artists/web designers out there and they also have time to make these infectious sounds. And me, I have trouble getting up early every morning. www.robotantists.comwww.lynxtechnique.comwww.myspace.com/therhoneoccupationFriday, June 19th ACTUARY + BAVAB BAVAB + WARM CLIMATE + SEND MY REGARDS + HFATTMLet's just start with HFATTM - which is an acronym for HOT FUCKING ACTION TO THE MAX. This duo does droney noise based around nothing really, but it somehow always comes out thick and vile, even when traversing a futuristic horizon. Think of them as TRANS AM meets a 13 yr old kid's dirty jokes. ACTUARY has been hanging out with us for most of our time on this earth, supporting countless experimental shows and now, he has put together one bang-up show for us. Give him a thank you or blame him when the night is over. There aren't enough pretty words or exasperated expressions of confusion to describe the mind-boggling sonic journeys of BAVAB BAVAB. Christie and Stane are true artists, body and soul, driving their limbs, throats and minds to new heights each time. Hopefully they don't scratch our floors. And WARM CLIMATE has got it going on, just give him a chance. One listen and you are guaranteed to be hooked. www.myspace.com/bavabbavabwww.myspace.com/actuarysoundwww.myspace.com/warmclimatewww.myspace.com/sendmyregardssSaturday, June 20th DUNG MUMMY presents BAVAB BAVAB + HOP FROG KOLLECTIV + AUTO DA FE + BETWEEN RAVENS & CROWSDUNG MUMMY challenges the senses. They have been putting together great, diverse shows for as long as I have been in Los Angeles, it seems, and it is only natural that we join forces to bring you this great show. Not only is BAVAB BAVAB back for an unprecedented second night in a row, but we have the incredible AUTO DA FE (eastern European gypsy folk meets middle east death drones), HOP FROG KOLLECTIV (imagine if the Himalayan Mountains were run through some distortion pedals and hefty reverb), and the ever-growing duo of BETWEEN RAVENS AND CROWS. www.myspace.com/bavabbavabwww.hop-frog.comwww.myspace.com/autodfwww.myspace.com/betweenravensandcrowsSunday, June 21st afternoon show with JULIANNA BARWICK + LUCKY DRAGONS 3p show
JULIANNA BARWICK rules. She creates a web of sounds and voice, loops upon loops. And she is going to be joining us for the afternoon, so make a date and join us. www.juliannabarwick.comSunday, June 21st evening show with JANE AUSTEN + METAL ROUGE + PRAYOLA + EZRA BUCHLA 9p doors
JANE AUSTEN, an enchanting mix of voice and loops, is joining us from New Zealand, another member of the METAL ROUGE study abroad program. The LA duo of Helga and Andrew should pretty much open their own place and fill it with their talented friends, not to mention play a bunch themselves. PRAYOLA is the new project of yours truly (Grant) and the always challenging Seth K (of WARM CLIMATE), and get ready for some heavy bass/drum machine/keyboards and vocal jams. Maybe even some clarinet in the mix too. www.myspace.com/metalrougeTuesday, June 23rd CRYPTACIZE + WOUNDED LION + MISSINCINATTI + EMILY LACY (welcome home)
These guys rocked our New Years Eve party, and we're dying that CRYPTACIZE is coming back to play our space, this time with a drummer. Nedelle and Chris really rock the two guitars and two voices vibe, creating intricate and yet instantly catchy constructions. MISSINCINATTI features the cello mastery of Jessica Catron, along with whatever guests she throws in the mix. We're psyched. www.myspace.com/cryptacizewww.myspace.com/jessicacatronwww.myspace.com/wlionFriday, June 26th FREDDY FUDD PUCKER + TEMPLE OF BON MATIN + KEVIN GREENSPON + ELROY LEROY + VIDEOThis is kind of a crazy bill, but we really wanted to include everyone that is playing tonight, from the local avant-bass and drum duo ELROY LEROY to the almost impossibly incredible VIDEO (creating jazz of the 23rd century). Add to that the way-out-there jazzery of the legendary TEMPLE OF BON MATIN. Oh yeah, and then we have the super stretched out guitar majesty of KEVIN GREENSPON, and the visiting folk punk of FREDDY FUDD PUCKER. www.myspace.com/freddyfuddpuckerwww.multiultramedia.com/muteantsounds/temple/home.htmwww.myspace.com/elroyleroywww.myspace.com/kevingreensponSaturday, June 27th "BRING BACK THE REAL DON STEELE" - A LA song cycle by MR. SMOLIN and company 8p doorsNot only do you get a full set of music by one of the most underrated songwriters in California, you get puppetry action by DANRAE WILSON, and live painting by GARY BASEMAN. MR. SMOLIN may be one of the foremost authorities on the music of the GRATEFUL DEAD, but he also writes a kind of music lodged somewhere between RANDY NEWMAN and ELVIS COSTELLO. www.mrsmolin.comMonday, June 29th WHITE HINTERLAND + PRINCE RAMA OF AYODHYA + guests
Casey Dienel, in her guise as WHITE HINTERLAND, created lush jazz-infused music for her first album, and has now returned with a sort of love letter to her favorite songs, the French pop song. Tonight, she and her band are joined by the adventurous whirling dervishes PRINCE RAMA OF AHODHYA. These cats are from Boston, by way of the Arabian Nights, but having picked up quite a bit of Larkin Grimm and Indian Jewelry along the way. www.whitehinterland.comwww.myspace.com/princeramaofayodhyaTuesday, June 30th BEST COAST + MOTHFIGHT + SOFT BLACK + WEREWOLVESBEST COAST's first performance at the Echo Curio marks the return of Bethany C, formerly of the entrancing POCAHAUNTED (version 1.0). Tonight, she and Bobb Bruno will lay down some of their tuned in, turned on, and dropped out California pop. The only thing you need to bring is your drug rug. MOTHFIGHT features a member of the astounding OCTOPUS PROJECT, and they are going to engulf and amaze you with their strange orchestrations. SOFT BLACK is bringing their dark carnival folk to our town by way of Brooklyn, while their touring buddies WEREWOLVES bring out the electrified spectres from their keyboards and guitars. www.mothfight.netwww.myspace.com/bestycoastywww.myspace.com/vincentcacchionewww.myspace.com/amsterdam
