Trombone Shorty marked the 40th Annual Jazz & Heritage Festival
with an intense schedule of standout performances, with his own band,
Orleans Avenue, and in collaborations with a wide variety of other
musicians at the festival and around the city.
Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote "By the way, does Trombone Shorty sleep during Jazzfest? Or does he just do another gig hourly?"
Trombone Shorty was joined onstage during his own House of Blues set by Wynton Marsalis and he also shared the stage with The Neville Brothers, Galactic, The Drive-By Truckers and The Dirty Dozen and Rebirth Brass Bands to name just a few.
CNN's Sean Caleb noted "Of all the amazing New Orleans, Louisiana, musicians, my favorite could be Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews."
CNN
also featured Trombone Shorty in their televised coverage of the
Festival from his Friday April 24, 2009 performance. CNN's cameras were
there to cover the show, which also streamed live on AT&T Music's
site. Blasting away on the Gentilly Stage immediately prior the day's
last act, Texas indie rockers Spoon, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue held the capacity crowd in thrall.

USA Today's Edna Gundersen proclaimed
"nobody exuded more rock-star charisma than Troy 'Trombone Shorty'
Andrews, the 23-year-old favorite son whose talent as a horn player and
showman continues to flower. He and his band, Orleans Avenue, delivered
a blistering set of bold, exuberant and cutting edge jazz-rock fueled
by funk and hip-hop."
Jambase writes,
"Perhaps more than any other first weekend performer, Jazz Fest was a
coming out party for Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews... Trombone Shorty
has shown himself to be a frontman."
