This just in, from a most reliable source...

Disques de Lapin Presents:
"Rabbits in Your Stocking" LPN9 - CD-R

Your Christmas wishlist was horribly incomplete...until now. Celebrate the holiday that has the highest suicide rate in style with Disques de Lapin's x-mas epic "Rabbits in Your Stocking", a showcase of Lapin artists and friends of Lapin ringing in the season of snow.

Featuring the already-known Lapin acts Stavo Craft, Oval Portraits, Polly Eurothane, the can't and the Universes, the album also features fresh face Jim Ether. Love Demian of O Paradis? Well, you'll hear him twice, under his usual moniker as well as in a preview of the future Demian/Nöla supergroup Les Paradisiers. Not enough for you?!? Then you'll certainly enjoy two tracks by Naevus and their earlier incarnation Winter...all the way from the crumpet fields of England, no less.

You want more? Try on a track from Jerome Deppe's new album, or his comrade David E. Williams as he offers up a version of "I Believe in Father Christmas" that will make you thirsty for soy nog and hungry for cyanide. Perhaps a Thomas Nöla et son Orchestre carol co-written by Ernest Hemmingway will do it for you. No? Well, the child-like melancholy of Miss Moonshine's "Stile Nacht" WILL!

Presented in a hand-stamped chipboard arigatopak, "Rabbits in Your Stocking" is sized to fit in almost any stocking. Order right away for delivery before XXXmas.

Mike and I have a blog together with some friends where we review movies, music, books, and other stuff. It's called Liar Society.

We recently decided to run a podcast series on the site. Theme for episode one is "Childhood Revisited." Each of us re-watched a beloved movie from our childhood, and one we hated. In the podcast, we discuss whether our opinions have changed over time. If you grew up in the 80s' like we did, you might get a kick out of it. We talk about the following films:

Herbie the Love Bug (loved by Mike)
E.T. (hated by Mike)
Watcher in the Woods and Bedknobs & Broomsticks (loved by me)
Burnt Offerings (hated by me - who knows why I was allowed to watch this anyway??)
The Great Muppet Caper (hated by Barak)
Krull (loved by Barak)
Airplane (hated by Aaron)
Close Encounters (loved by Aaron)

Check it out at
www.liarsociety.com

And if you listen to the cast...please don't blame me for the Knight Rider references!

Current mood:respectful

Today is National Pigeon Day. Here's the story of Cher Ami, the pigeon most famous for saving the "Lost Battalion." There were hundreds of pigeons just like him, who saved thousands of soldiers' lives with their bravery - flying through clouds of bullets to deliver important messages. Cher Ami died on June 13th, 1919.

------------------------

On October 3, 1918, Charles Whittlesey and more than 500 men were trapped in a small depression on the side of the hill behind enemy lines without food and ammunition. They were also beginning to receive friendly fire from allied troops who did not know their location. Surrounded by the Germans, many were killed and wounded in the first day and by the second day, only a little more than 200 men were still alive. Whittlesey dispatched messages by pigeon. The pigeon carrying the first message ("Many wounded. We cannot evacuate.") was shot down. A second bird was sent with the message, "Men are suffering. Can support be sent?" That pigeon also was shot down. Only one homing pigeon was left: 'Cher Ami'. He was dispatched with a note in a canister on his left leg,

"We are along the road parallel to 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For heaven's sake, stop it!"

As Cher Ami tried to fly back home, the Germans saw him rising out of the brush and opened fire and for several minutes, bullets zipped through the air all around him. The men of the Lost Battalion saw Cher Ami shot down, but he was soon airborne again. He managed to arrive back at his loft at division headquarters 25 miles to the rear in just 25 minutes, helping to save the lives of the 194 survivors. In this last mission, Cher Ami had delivered the message despite having been shot through the breast, blinded in one eye, covered in blood, and with a leg hanging only by a tendon.

Cher Ami had become the hero of the 77th Infantry Division, so army medics worked long and hard to save his life. They were unable to save his leg, so they carved a small wooden one for him. When he recovered enough to travel, the little one-legged hero was put on a boat to the United States, with General John J. Pershing personally seeing Cher Ami off as he departed France.

Upon return to America, Cher Ami became the mascot of the Department of Service. The pigeon was awarded the Croix de Guerre Medal with a palm Oak Leaf Cluster for his heroic service in delivering 12 important messages in Verdun. He died at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, on June 13, 1919 from the wounds he received in battle and was later inducted into the Racing Pigeon Hall of Fame in 1931. He also received a gold medal from the Organized Bodies of American Racing Pigeon Fanciers in recognition of his extraordinary service during World War I.

I recently submitted some of my mixed media work for a fun little project called Theatre des Modes. Each participant created their own interpretation of a "Paper Theatre" in the style of Marie Antoinette. Paper theatres were common toys in days gone by, and some folks still collect them, or create replicas. Here are some photos of each participant's work:

Current mood:nostalgic
This is an old home video my Dad found & posted on the web. Me & a baby squirrel...approximately age 10??? The poor thing fell in between the walls of our summer home and cried all night long. I couldn't stand for it to starve, so I begged Dad to cut a hole in the wall and rescue the little guy.
Voices in the background are Mom, Dad, sister Wendy, and Uncle Jim.

Every once in awhile I see a film that totally amazes me.
Blood Tea and Red String is one of those. Artist and filmmaker
Christiane Cegavske completed this hour long stop-motion masterpiece over the span of 13 years. She wrote the script, designed & built all of the characters and sets by hand, and filmed the entire piece by herself. Despite several studio moves and other tribulations over the decade-plus it took her to complete the film, Christiane's unique vision is vividly captured and soundly portrayed in a bizarre but moving narrative about the struggle between the nature loving Creatures who Dwell Under the Oak, and the aristocratic White Mice over a doll that the mice have commissioned.

It is indeed a beautiful handmade stop-motion fairy tale for adults. At least Netflix it if you can't afford to buy your own copy!

(movie still: White Mouse drinking Blood Tea)
