I’ve really got to hand it to Paul Holmgren for the way he is changing the face of the Flyers this off-season. I mean were this the late 70’s the team would be a juggernaut. But since this is the modern era of the NHL, I’ll have to reconsider the man’s supposed front office genius in remaking a Broad Street Bullies gang on ice. The Flyboys held onto Arron Asham (155 penalty minutes), Dan Carcillo (254 penalty minutes) and Riley Cote (174 penalty minutes). For what other reason would “Holmy” bring in non-scoring Ian Laperriere (163 penalty minutes, 316 points in 1001 career games) if he wasn’t trying to bring back the bruising 70’s? In case you didn’t do the math, that is 4 players who totaled just under 750 minutes in penalties last year. Is there any wonder at all why the Flyers had such outstanding short-handed statistics?
At least Asham showed late in the season that if he is out there with the right combination of players he can be an effective playmaker as well as a physical force…but signing Laperriere? Really? Is he supposed to somehow replace the departed talent of role-players like Mike Knuble or Joffrey Lupul?
This is but one area of the new look Flyers that just baffles me. They also just signed a goalie to back up our new starter Ray Emery, a guy who hasn’t played in the NHL since the 07-08 season. His back up will be a guy the team had already gotten rid of once, Brian Boucher. Whether these two are any upgrade at all over the Biron/Niittymaki tandem of last year will have to wait until the games are played. There IS potential in Emery, a guy who backstopped the Senators during a nice Cup run a few years ago, but there is also potential for disaster if he implodes…which is the reason he left the NHL in the first place; to try and find himself and regain a foothold on his career. But if Boucher ends up forced into the top slot, this team isn’t even gonna be playoff bound.
The team’s defense is now also under suspicion in my eyes. Derian Hatcher never really got to do what they paid him for and has retired over the off-season. His void has been filled via trade for 34-year old former stud Chris Pronger. In his last two years on Anaheim, which is not a bad team by any means, the defensive quarterback has a whopping -1 in 154 games. I don’t really know if that is the player I’m trading two first round picks, Lupul and young defensive stud Luca Sbisa for. Clearly this was a deal done on past history of the Chris Pronger brand recognition. The man is no offensive slouch mind you, but with Kimmo Timonen getting up there in age (34) and no outstanding “franchise” players on the rise I’m 100% against making the deal for him with Sbisa in it. This one will haunt them, mark my words. Can anyone explain to me why Mike Rathje is listed on the team’s roster? Anyone? Beullar? Beullar? Poor Ryan Parent must feel the weight of the Flyers defensive world on him as their youngest at the position and being a former blue-chipper (he was taken 18th overall in 2005). They’ve still got Braydon Coburn and Matt Carle isn’t all that bad, but they’re definitely thin, especially if/when injury occurs.
Offense is still where it is at for this team and despite the loss of 52 goals (Knuble, Lupul) I believe without a shadow of a doubt that they’ll not only make up that loss, but that there is still room for growth and improvement. 21-year old phenom Claude Giroux will be up for an entire year, high-priced Danny Briere showed signs of life when actually on the ice and Jeff Carter looks to only just be getting started. There is also Captain Mike Richards who is at the very least steady on both ends of the ice and Simon Gagne finally got through an entire season relatively unscathed. For Gagne that could mean a true return to the offensive form he’d had before falling to concussions and other minor bang-ups. Rock solid Scotty Hartnell can produce more, as his stats have increased each of the last three successive years.
They’ve got a great offensive nucleus, but after those guys it gets real thin real fast in terms of puck handling ability. All those penalty mongers aren’t going to get it done and will likely have the team in more shorthanded situations than last year.
As a Penguins fan, I want to thank Paul Holmgren for what looks like weakening his team instead of going out and really adding to what was already here. Right now the additions to the club just aren’t adding up to what was lost and that is no way to come out gunning for a Cup run.
ADDITIONS: G Ray Emery, G Brian Boucher, F Ian Laperriere, D Chris Pronger
SUBTRACTIONS: G Martin Biron, G Antero Niittymaki, F Mike Knuble, F Joffrey Lupul, D Luca Sbisa, first-round picks in 2009 and 2010 and a conditional third-round pick in 2010 or 2011

Pardon me if I'm all over the place, as you well know...it has been a while.
I first would like to thank the film talents of one Lucy Thai for aiding me in relaxing before I sat down to write this and read my comics hereafter. She is a lovely, lovely booty-licious wonder.
So, 'sup? Yeah, still single. Not dating. All the candidates aren't really possible candidates so that limits things just slightly when you're liking one, two or even three people and none of them are liking you back.
I am having lotsa fun these days though, I'll tell you that. I mean, even if the fun isn't necessarily true fun the moment it is occuring. Take this weekend for instance.
Pal Buzby and I hit Atlantic City to go and see legendary rockers Fleetwood Mac at Boardwalk Hall. I'd gotten the tickets for free and since that was the case I decided to waste some dough and get a discounted room at Tropicana for the night since we'd likely be drinking and expending energy at the concert and running around. Why drive home really late, ya know?
We were put up in the newer Havana Tower and I was a little excited since I'd been at Trop before and hadn't yet stayed in the new wing. Hmmmmm. PRISON CELL! The window began at six feet off the ground, so you really couldn't see out of it and the room itself seemed very much unlike a hotel room and more like a faux dirty apartment not at the shore. Ok, we wouldn't be in there anyways all that much. In our wanderings around the boardwalk we happened into a literal dollar store, with huge "dollar store" sign outside because I was thirsty. As I was paying for the water some guy comes up to the cashier and asks him how much a hat inside the store costs...naturally, the employee replied "A DOLLAR." Ugh. We had an awesome and light sushi dinner up at Caesar's shops and I regrettably connot remember the place's name and I've eaten there at least twice now. It is the first stop to one's right when they're getting off the escalator.
On the way back to the room to relax and clean up a little before the concert I stopped off at the "homemade" ice cream shop right at one of Trop's entrances and nabbed their lovely cupcake ice cream with an additional scoop of eggnogg. mmmmm!
It knocked me out while Heather got herself ready for the show.
Getting into Boardwalk Hall was something different. The congestion rated "riot mob" status with no true lines or anything other than confused tons of people all looking to enter at the same time. Shirts for the big Mac were outrageous. So much so that the dude selling them couldn't even understand what a women's babydoll T was $50, telling us that he hadn't sold a single one.
I did manage to buy a shirt, though it looks more like a Penguins Stanley Cup shirt than a concert tour. Maybe I'll have it on one time when ya see me.
The concert was awesome and Stevie Nicks is a total slice of vociferous heaven. Oh how I love that woman's lungs and songs! My only let down for the whole show was that Christie McVie has been retired and the band still sung a song or two that required her voice and no matter how much I adore Stevie...it just didn't sound right.
Besides that I couldn't be happier to have gotten to see such a hugely famous group that still manages to kick ass and sound incredible.
After the concert we decided to attempt to use this supposed free $25 that Trop gives out to newbies on their "rewards" card. We got it charged a'la D&B's but alas, the card wouldn't give up the fake dollars to the slots we wanted to play. Fuming, I decided that I'd now gamble regardless, putting a fiver into a video poker machine. BLAMMO! I won $120 and naturally, I cashed out while I was ahead.
Now 1 a.m. or so, we now were heading back to the room to use the other coupon the hotel had given us for a $25 room service comp. Time went by and by. I made three phone calls in the duration and that room service food we ordered around one managed to get to us at FOUR IN THE MORNING. For added comedy, the wait person who brought it up genuinely thought he deserved some kind of tip, going as far as telling us at least twice that "tip was not included" in the bill. We told him that was nice and sent him on his way.
Were that not bad enough...imagine laying down trying to sleep, only to hear some drunken slut outside your door on her cel phone. It got to the point where I got up, looked out the door right at her and yelled "Jesus Christ, are you kidding me?" This is awesome, lemme tell ya.
When I closed the door, I heard her tell whomever was on the phone with her that some really rude guy had just yelled at her. hahahahaaha It was a true bizarro world in Atlantic City! Horrid!

Wizard Philly is this week. For all those who don't know, it is the lame-o version of a comic con here in Philadelphia that is put on by schlock-meister magazine hacks Wizard Magazine. Yeah, I complain and go and that is because this is the only game in town all year in terms of "major" comic conventions. That is a shameful notion.
I'll have some work with me, though I've got no idea who even would want to see it since I'm not selling the ownership rights to anything I'm creating. That tends to be a deal killer, when people realize they can't rob you.
What I'd love to do is write for someone else and find THAT job at the con. But again, no one is interested in someone who can write. Maybe it is me, but people ask and volunteer to read things and I'll tell them to give me their honest word upon finishing something...and I never hear about it again. Same thing on some works I supposedly had with this or that artist. Beginnings and then...nothing.
How do people expect to actually make a living in this business if they can't finish anything? I've got scripts and ideas a-plenty but nothing is going anywhere becuase I want to own my work. I'm paying two, maybe three artists...an inker...a letterer and soon a colorist when one book is done. This isn't easy but sure would be if I could get a gig writing a book for someone. Gimmie a damned chance at least! lol I love rejection (see my relations for truth to that one).
Ok, I'm done whining. Though I could continue on since my fridge has so much cheese in it to accompany...
I'll keep plugging away. There just has to be a better, quicker, more fulfilling way to go about this stuff. God bless the first person/company to give me a shot because they're really gonna get somethin' good. Some of you know that to be very true and I thank those small packs of fans I've already got. **********************************************************************
There isn't enough hours in the day for my anymore and that is the main reason I'm not on this site as much as I used to be. I don't have time for a lot of the web farting around. With writing and doing fantasy baseball and now football and selling things on ebay and taking small trips here and there...how do I do all that I want to?
Simple explanation is that I can't and it annoys me. Give me 48 hours in a day and I'd love it!
Hmmmmm. I had more to say and I think all my comic and relation whining has mislead the rest of my brain. I know that I'm happy as hell my Pens won the Cup this year, especially at the expense of the Wings and their overly egotistic fanbase. I watched most of the games (out sometimes so what can ya do) and never changed the channel no matter how badly they'd get scored on. They're my boys for now and ever and I'm proud of those young bastards.
With that all said, I think I'll depart. No worries, I'll be writing another blog before the end of the week I'm sure. Plus I need to update the main page here don't I? It is terribly out-dated and I don't like being non-stylish. ******************************************************************
I wanna leave you with this in your head: on this past Friday, 11 people I knew all lost their jobs at my place of business. While it is the way business is run during bad financial times it sure doesn't make it suck any less. It has made me question what I do that is so special that I was kept, a survivor on the island and holding that immunity idol.
It really hits you, not seeing a lot of people you met somewhere and call friends. Just can't take anything for granted in this life. Relations, jobs, hobbies...it all seems to be so...non-permanent.

I’ve now seen Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition twice; once in my hometown of Philly at the Franklin Institute and most recently on a Las Vegas vacation inside the Luxor Hotel and Casino complex. Besides the different locales, each viewing was a unique full on sensory experience as the exhibition has different artifacts and overall presentations at each stop on its never-ending exhibit schedule. Just for informational purposes, the Titanic exhibitions have been viewed by more 20 million people worldwide and are among the highest attended in history. The first time I took in the Titanic Exhibition it was a simple matter of being awestruck by the reality of something I had only saw/read about and romanticized in my own mind. There were lots and lots of other viewers walking about and while that wasn’t a problem, the amount of tourist-types or general elderly in the way did take away from the ability to transport myself into the settings of the exhibition. See, this isn’t just a museum type of display; there are replica rooms and set painstakingly built to give you the feeling and perspective of what it must have been like to genuinely be on the ship itself. So when there are say fifteen people all standing in the same room chatting and things, it takes away from the fantasy by default. I mean, here I wanted to be Chris Reeves in “Somewhere in Time” almost hypnotizing myself to believe I….was…there. I raided the gift shop just to bring myself a little closer to the vessel and all its fascinating mystery at the end of my walking tour. I’m a complete sucker for things like this; replica third class coffee cups denoting the White Star Line name and logo. Of which I bought two. A third class blanket and first class tea setting (a single cup and saucer) rounded out my very own Titanic replica artifact collection. Eventually I’ll get to putting some of these items into a display in my home, as I’m also the owner of nearly all the original Titanic double-sided posters from the Jim Cameron film release. Oh yeah, I’ve also got a really cool replica of the drawing Jack did of Rose in the film as well as a few other little goodies that are framed together. Indeed, I’d consider myself a minor “Titanic buff.” Getting to experience the exhibit again after a few years and doing it in Vegas really had me excited. Seeing the large advertisements and grandiose entrance for it most of the week not only kept it in my mind, but only served to build and build up my anticipation of finally doing another walk through. This time, it was very much like a religious experience for me. I mean that not comically, not for writing emphasis, but in the exact way that it should be interpreted. Besides pal Buzby, I was the only soul walking the exhibit at the time that we had decided to do it. Literally. The entire exhibit, the entire time, the only two people. The rooms were climate controlled to match the environ that they were set up to resemble with accompanying soundtracks that aided in really transporting one back to the time of the gargantuan ship. What happens on the walking tour is that when you begin, you’re at the beginning of Titanic. There are a few rooms that go in detail about the construction of the ship, showing rivets and other mechanical bits and pieces that I could never adequately describe with the proper nautical terms. But think of the sounds…the hammering of hot steel, the sounds of other ships and their thundering horns blowing. All the while you’re looking at actual images of the ship under construction or a room of twenty (or so) tables containing blueprints and people studiously examining them. You can’t help but feel the excitement of what would be the world’s biggest ocean liner. After those rooms came a few that gave background on some of the prominent guests that Titanic had on its single, partial voyage. This is where your first chills will come because there are many pieces here on not so notable people who, by some odd happenstance ended up on this ship when they were originally supposed to be elsewhere. You also begin to get a feel for the ship’s class separation via text and artifacts. The one bit that I couldn’t help but keep in my head was how, down below in third class there was one tub for every two hundred people. Now, even though it wasn’t an era of daily bathing, that still sounds borderline criminal! The come the rooms. Exciting, haunting and creepy in an oh-so-cool kind of way you push through a ship’s style of door and there you are on a third class hallway of the Titanic. There are closed doors on either side of you as you walk the hall listening to the sound of that mammoth engine pushing the ship over the waters. You stop to see a room that has two bunk beds and the most minimal of comforts. It is a room you’d never want to sleep in, especially with the thundering engine never ceasing. The first class rooms were stunning and insanely ornate with every detail. Gorgeous writing desks and lounge chairs with ottomans. There were lots of textiles and just incredibly showy with everything made by the original manufacturers. A room like this would equate to something like $90,000.00 in today’s market for the voyage. Next up was the Grand Staircase. It was every bit as stunning as it was in the movie. All that hardwood…they actually even let you walk up some of the stairs in order to pose for a photo that you’ve the option to purchase at the end of the tour. I’d recommend walking up there even if you’ve no intention on buying the photo, if only to stand five steps up and looking all about you at the marble and wood and the clock behind you in the wall, the cherubs…wow. There was music here but it was simpler orchestration than it was in tone with the scene. Hearing a chatty upper-crust along with a song or two the fabled Titanic musicians played would have been much more gratifying than seeing an employee holding a modern camera about to snap your tourist/souvenir photo. It got freaky when I walked out of another ship’s door and ended up on Titanic’s outer Promenade Deck in the late evening. To my left was the black setting of sea and sparsely starry sky. It was COLD out on the deck and it made me slightly dizzy for a moment. I was almost afraid to look over the side of the deck even though I was only in a room. That crisp air and the ocean sounds over the speaker system made it that convincing. This was when the thrill and excitement of building and boarding a historic ship’s maiden voyage began to come full circle to knowing the destiny of it and everyone aboard. That chill on the Promenade led directly into a room that had a pretty sizable real ice iceberg sitting inside of it. The rooms I was now walking through were darkly lit, the sound effects ranged from people yelling “Iceberg right ahead” to random panic to the ship’s steel buckling. It is uncanny how staged rooms can work the emotions like they were on me. At this point is when the exhibition really opens up into its largest room and my eyes lay upon something I never thought or expected to ever see: a genuine piece of the ship itself! Dubbed “The Big Piece,” the giant chunk of hull that was on display weighed something around 15 tons and came in at 26 feet long. This was not something that was present the first time I’d seen the exhibition and I certainly didn’t look online or anything in advance to know it was here. Just standing there alone with it, looking at what the depths of the ocean had done to it…what the iceberg on April 15th did in terms of twisting the steel like a toy…wow. As the centerpiece of the room and rightly so, there were a few videos playing that showed the team bringing it up out of the water. A timeline showed that from its discovery (and like two failed attempts) it took about five years to finally bring the piece up. Overall there were a lot of smaller artifacts in the exhibit strewn throughout all the rooms, each with accompanying stories all their own. I found it pretty amusing that there were notices given out to employees and to select people on the boat to be wary of certain notorious gamblers/hustlers. There were even some minuscule dice that someone had to likely gamble on one of the decks or some such. Another cool piece had to be the wine bottles dated 1900 and still containing wine in them, their corks only slightly damaged. The final room was filled with the names of all the deceased, listed on two large boards. One listed all the people who had survived while the other listed all those who went down with the ship. The first thing I did was look for someone with my last name. Why is that? It was almost as though in my head, it would have cemented some connection to me besides my general fandom. I know they have no choice in these matters but in retrospect, having the gift shop come directly after a room that included the list of deceased is just a little in bad taste. But naturally, like my last time in the Titanic gift shop I bought lots of interesting things. There was the replica ceramic toothpaste container that I spied in the exhibit, a soft cover edition of survivor’s stories, a few postcards, a program of the exhibit. I can never have enough reading or quality replica materials from this moment in history. Some people will say that this is an exhibit you can bring the whole family to due to the movie and the general knowledge of it all, but I don’t believe one should bring children here. I mean, after I left the whole exhibition and began to reflect and re-imagine what I saw it messed my day up. I mean well over a thousand people died. You read stories of people being moved onto this ship from others by a touch of fate called the coal strike…a lot of the people who died shouldn’t have ever been on Titanic in the first place. I’d like to see it all again, maybe in another city since there are about four of these exhibitions for Titanic here in the States. Go. Check out a piece of history that is really so much more than the romance/disaster film portrays it to be.

Lemme tell ya, staying in sometimes on a Friday night is awesome! It doesn’t happen all that often, but I’ve just felt so beat up lately that this past Friday I decided it was full on “stay in” night. After grabbing a quart of water ice to mix with my 99Bananas that was it for me and the outside world until the next morning. The whole of my eve would be spent on the living room floor reading the entirety of Matt Wagner’s Grendel – or at least as much as I could before my eyeballs gave out.
Quick aside: I’m also writing something (I don’t quite know what it is yet) about all that I’m reading, like breaking it down mini by mini, issue by issue and telling what happened or how books link or what belongs where chronologically. What I’d wanted to do was put it up in pieces here but I think I’m gonna hold out until I’m finished and perhaps put together something really cool to read about the story history of my favorite character. We’ll see I guess!
Waking up on Saturday only served to prove how physically exhausted I must have been. It is really rare that I sleep past 9 in the morn, but here I was jumping out wide awake close to 11! Once Heather had finished getting ready it was out the door and into a lovely day we went. It felt like a long time since I was able to do my weekend exercise walking into the city and on this day when I had so much energy we’d end up doing both up and back! (about ten miles, maybe a little more/less) Eventually we’d discover this wasn’t our brightest decision of the day but that’ll come up later.
On our way up into the city I stopped off at Pop’s for a medium Root Beer water ice and we proceeded to walk straight up Broad Street, which is a surprisingly pleasant walking route. The sky was kind of patchy with clouds but after virtually two full weeks of rain, I’ll take it. We dropped in on the travel agent and pick up our Vegas info for the trip that we four Mouseketeers are taking. Next up on the walking tour was an awesome food/fashion festival that I accidentally happened upon this same time last year that was occurring again on the very day we were in the vicinity!
Having Walnut Street closed off from Broad to Rittenhouse is just awesome. The atmosphere was just so conducive to my having a wonderful afternoon. All along the street were tents set up from many of the direct area’s best eateries serving up affordable samplings of their wares. Music played all via DJs here and there along the pathway. There was a moderate-sized stage set up for a fashion show, again of the direct area’s best clothing stores, many of which aren’t franchises. Lunch was totally on the list, especially since I hadn’t been hungry when I awoke. Combine that along with the walk in a moderate heat (resulting in lotsa sweat) and I was ready to gorge myself on something decadently delicious. I’ll be honest, the sweet smell of BBQ and general grilling going on at tents set up by Table 31 and Alma De Cuba and others wasn’t helping me to easily decide where to go or what to eat. Had a genie been available, two of my three wishes would have been for lots of money and a stomach that wouldn’t hurt if I were to dine at every tent along the way.
As Pal Buzy and I were deciding on which tent we’d each eat from there were two beverage tents that drew our attentions. One was set up by this Japanese restaurant/sushi house that I’ve eaten at but can’t for the life of me remember the name of (they’re solid though, just can’t remember the name!). They had a sign stating “1 beer $3 / 2 beers $5.” Really, in pointing out the obvious, this is a sign that got a lot of people’s happy attention. Rare is it that you are allowed to legally walk around with alcoholic beverages in Philly and this closed off street festival was one of’em. We were handed our Yuenglings in little white paper bags and off we went once again. The heat, the throngs of people, the music and the heavenly scent of cooked meat in the air…never a more appropriate time to have a nice cold beer.
So speaking of cold beer, we happened upon a tent that wasn’t a part of any local establishment but was from the fine purveyors of Blue Moon Beer. They were there handing out all kinds of goodies from free Blue Moon bottle openers to coasters to…wait for it…FREE SAMPLES! Yes, as long as you provided valid ID and were of legal drinking age, you too could finagle yourself a few of the little bathroom-sized cups of tasty Blue Moon. Then came the surprise that the company is looking to pull a Sam Adams on the brewing world by creating seasonals. Since they were freebies you can bet your sweet Aunt Sally that I tried each of them and possibly more than once on my empty stomach. There were actually only two new flavors both of which are easily distinguishable just from their names: Honey Moon and Pale Moon.
Besides all the free swag and brews, what also got me giddy at the Blue Moon tent was that they were letting people paint. See, there were two artists there who had laid out the groundwork on what will become a billboard up in the city and with the paints there on site they allowed random commoners the experience of coming up, following the color key to the painting and freely putting the colors to canvas. As a writer, I’ve got to say that one of my dreams would be to have the ability to also draw my thoughts so standing there and painting the mural for about fifteen minutes was really satisfying. Afterwards I had to sign a release and put my signature on piece that’ll be blown up to accompany the mural so I’ll have to drive by so that I can see my name/logo all huge upon billboard that I helped to paint. Awesome!
After painting and drinking and quickly walking around Rittenhouse Square I had grown hungry. Heather tends to be hungry every ten minutes so it was nothing new for her. (I kid I kid…somewhat lol) I had decided that I’d be eating from the tent that had that largest line. Rouge had to offerings: a mega-sized Kobe Beef hotdog and delicious slider versions of their signature Rouge Burger: lovely beef on a Challah roll, caramelized onions and gruyere cheese…I had two of those babies for the insanely cheap price of seven bucks.
On the way back toward Broad I bought the next round of beers at the 2/$5 Japanese tent, this time changing over to the more exotic Tsingtao Chinese beer; again, another winning choice. Heather ended up getting the burger I originally was freaking out over at Nineteen at the Bellevue’s tent. That thing was a MEGA-burger and the bite I had was nearly as delicious as my minis. Oh if only I had the tummy room!
So now here is where our walking back to my house becomes a badly executed plan. See, we had tickets along with Cavs to see The Shining at the Ritz on a midnight showing. Initially, we planned on walking into the city and then coming back to my place to rest, possibly falling asleep for a few hours. This now became impossible with walking home since we got back at my house at 5:30 and had to clean ourselves up for Cavs to pick us up at near 8 to hit Olde City for some more dining/drinking fun at Buffalo Billiards.
I swear that I only fell asleep for maybe five minutes near the end of the movie. Maybe if the air conditioning in the theater hadn’t been broken and the movie not sold out so as to heat the room to the point of sweating while not moving…I’d had stayed awake the whole time. It was really great to see the flick up on the big screen since I didn’t see it the original time around. What shocked me though was that seeing it there with all those other people…it didn’t scare me at all, and especially not like it does when I’m home watching it either alone or with a friend or two.
Special kudos go out to Cavs who surprised me at Buffalo Billiards with his drinking a Pabst with a side of Crown Royal. My boy hit it big time old school!
Yep, another great weekend in a year that already has had many and we’re not even at the halfway point in the year! Soon’ll be Vegas and then soon after that I’ll be seeing one Tony Bennett and then Fleetwood Mac and maybe even a Country Kenny concert. Who knows what’ll happen this summer!?

These grey days are really good ones to listen to something like the Donnie Darko soundtrack that I put together. Its like, I’m not depressed or brooding, but listening to these songs (The Killing Moon) and looking out the window at the cloud formations it just...makes me feel all dark.
I know that I’ve gone away for the most part and for that I’m sorry. At least my time away has been rather productive – frustrating at times – but productive nonetheless. Many of you know that I to update my status and send out silly virtual drinks on Facebook, but even over there I’m not spending all that much time playing around.
These days if I’m not writing, I’m reading and little else. With my Vegas vacation on the horizon this isn’t the time for me to be out and about spending wads of cash. Gotta have those bills paid and the whole wide world taken care of before I’m off to one of my favorite cities because when I come back I finalize my "in the green" status.
About that writing...if you happen to catch me wandering around aimlessly during June’s Wizard World Philly show and are curious about what the hell it is I’m creating, stop me and ask because I’ll have something with me. With fingers crossed, I can boldly state that I should have fourteen penciled, inked and lettered B&W sample pages to carry around and generally show off. All other projects are all over the place and though I wish I could write about the one that is totally finished and coming out via a notable publisher, my lips must remain zipped for the time being.
It feels nice to know that I’ve got an actual creative team and every one of those bastards is the goods. This stuff isn’t easy though, working with all these people. We’re juggling five lives at the moment and it’ll be six once a colorist is involved. Who has paid in full? Who is lagging behind in paying someone? Who hasn’t turned in pages? Who needs more pages to work on? How soon can this or that be done? When will new pages get dropped off? Oy, there are so many questions and so many answers for them.
Chapter one of this book is 24 pages, so having 14 of them more or less done with the exception of coloring will be something to celebrate and it is about time we showed off something to interested parties. I feel like I’ve been working on the same projects for like three years now...and uh, have been.
What all this lovely creativity and creative frustration has helped me to do is put aside all my usual brain patterns. Women? Huh, what are they? After my breakup (online, naturally right? Sighs) of a few months ago I’ve kind of taken myself out of that game in favor of more promising rewards. Writing makes me feel better more often than not, than having to interact with most of the women in my world. So POOF, away I’ve happily faded. Oh people still text me and I’ll chat or email with this or that gal…but I’m not "putting the work in" so to speak. It seems to be the era of the woman that mostly has no idea what she wants. The ones that do know are all married and most of them know that what they don’t want is to be married any longer. The tales I’ve heard, my friends...the tales I’ve heard. All of it just makes me happy to either stay in and write or simply hang out with my friends and enjoy life. Sure, I’ll see an individual writing something here or there on a social networking site and it’ll rub me wrong or I’ll let out a little sarcastic snort in thinking that they’ll never quite get it...but I’m more focused on say, going to the Franklin Institute soon to see the big Star Trek exhibit and possibly wear a Kirk replica shirt while sitting in his Captain’s chair. Talk about excitement! **laughs**
Back to writing...my "smut" project has garnered itself an additional issue that’ll come out after the initial four are released…something of an over-sized one-shot that should be cool. Where at first I was looking for an artistic 50-50 type partner on this, I’ve given up all hope and have decided to hire another artist instead, retaining all rights/ownership myself yet again. Interesting world, this comic’s industry. But should it work out and his schedule is free at the right time, I think that we’ll work out fabulously on the first issue. My plan is still to have a different artist on each of the four books due to alternating main characters.
Tomorrow night I’m heading up to South Street to check out Fischerspooner at the TLA with the McMan and his McBrik. I’m envisioning hanging around with them for a little bit until our band comes on and then those two dancing fabulously on their own, as anyone will tell you that I’m a statue at concerts. I’ll just hit home and change clothes and then head somewhere up there for a bite to eat before the festivities.
With the past few weekends of nice weather I did a lot of photo-taking outdoors and came away with some stunningly hot photos, some of which I’m pretty proud of. It gave me the bug to keep at it but Philly’s weather has just sucked for about the last ten days, seemingly trading places with Seattle’s. My next desired photog spot is the "Italian" Market.
Foodstuffs...I went to Haru up in Old City for a sushi lunch with Pal Buzby and though the sushi wasn’t all that flavorful, they made this one appetizer dish called "Mad Crab" that was just one of the most awesome seafood concoctions ever. Good ole Maggiano’s was hit recently but I just ate the same old thing there from the appetizer part of their menu; stuffed mushrooms and fried zucchini...still good, but nothing so notable that I need to wax gastronomically about. One thing I can rave forever on though, is the pulled roast pork sandwich that DiBruno Brothers’ makes up at their Rittenhouse shop. This is "Wow, OMG Greatest. Sammich. Ever" territory, I swear to you and should you not believe me, go up there and get one yourself. It must be packed with about a pound and a half of deliciously seasoned and wet pork and can be topped off with sharp provolone (highly advised) and/or broccoli rabe.
More on food...this summer I really wanted to write this fun feature piece about cheese steaks here in Philly. I envisioned hitting about 6 of the top steak joints with six people of varying opinion, each eating half a cheese steak from each place. I’d be the person gathering info from all us eaters and putting the piece together with bits of humor and history about our tasters and the places we’d hit, even doing a little photography at each stop. My question to all of you would be…any of my friends here interested in joining me on this cheese steak madness? Drop me a line!

Trust me when I say that I’ve been in a positive/good mood as of late…surprisingly so after my latest (and have I mentioned surprising?) breakup. This blog isn’t so much a rant about the world, but more of just some observances that I’ve, uh…well…observed.
I think I’m beginning to see why there are so many single people around my age. Many women at this point tend to have a child, maybe two. They’re working and taking care of their kid, which would be two full-time jobs. They’re dealing with the father of their child who they’re obviously not getting along with since they’re no longer together and this takes its toll on interacting with other/new people. When there is a spare moment from work and children many gals tend to just want to relax in their home, not take an hour or so getting ready to party in the city or at bars making themselves even more tired for the next day’s return to daily normalcy. Sometimes they just can’t even find that energy they had when they were just a little younger or just before they had their children, to stay up/out late like the old days. There are a lot of variables for many women today just to get them out of the home.
For men my age it is a little different. Some have children to look after but in my experience (note that word please) they’re not letting the job and kid exhaust them as much, still going out into the world and enjoying themselves. Most others of my single guy friends just do not talk to women. Oh they’re straight and they’re into women, but something is going on that I just can’t figure out and they seem to be quite happy (on the outside anyways) being the perpetual bachelor and doing what they’d like when they’d like.
Of course on both ends of that spectrum there are the male/female nuts who just don’t have any clue what they’d like even after all these years. These are the ones who tend to remind you that yes; there are some hot people out there who are equally hot messes. The saving grace for your own mentality upon encountering these folk is that you at least can readily grasp why they’re single.
Those other two groups, not so much though.
Then there is this other gang and wow, they’re the ones who make me really happy just to be alone with my kitty. The amount of unhappily married people that I know is staggering. For the life of me I can’t even grasp why many of them remain together…I mean is getting a divorce that bad in comparison to living the rest of your life much happier (in theory, if you don’t make the same mistakes) than you are now? How can a person go home to a place that they can’t find comfort in day after day? Ah, who can say…I’m not in their positions.
My days anymore as just about me. I work and do my writing and take care of my home. Yeah, I’ve tossed out a line here and there but nowadays, when they’re not returned with a nibble I just go fishin’ elsewhere. My tolerance for confused people or game-playing people or just people who can’t give straight answers has shrunk to about nil. Even though I’m a terribly horny bastard and even though I’m a torrid flirt it just doesn’t even feel right to me today. The desire and motivation isn’t there because there isn’t anyone out there really work desiring or motivating me. So I write and focus on other things, with the exception of this blog. **laughs**
People tell me that love is a lot of work; that marriage is a lot of work and I just don’t grasp it. Yeah, every day isn’t paradise and none of us are even close to perfect…but I’ve met a woman or two in the past who I really could have remained with forever and a day. It didn’t pan out and hopefully I’ve learned from the disasters that ensued, but I’ll at least keep hope that it is out there in the world, that real love. Natural love. Many of us just complicate matters so much and not even notice that we’re doing it…it is truly a shame because there are some really good, really interesting people out there.
Change the pace now…
Rain today. How much more fitting can it be to have rain in Philly the day after one of its most beloved personalities has passed? While I haven’t cried (LOTS of goosebumps though) for Harry Kalas, I’ll miss the man incredibly. To say I’ve been listening to him my whole live isn’t an exaggeration and I remember the nights when I lived back with my family…I’d be hiding from the world in my bedroom with the stereo on listening to the Phillies game and Harry The K calmly calling the game. The voice was so damned relaxing and into my adult life he relaxed me so that I’d fall asleep to a sporting event while lying on my sofa with a cool breeze hitting me from an open window.
Of course I’m going to mention last year’s World Series win. Again, something I’ve waited my entire life for a chance to experience one and naturally Harry was right there with us all enthusiastically announcing their win and sealing a memory for my lifetime.
Who will put me to sleep now when I’m watching those late west coast games? There isn’t another voice that can replace Harry and to even attempt to do so would only result in horrid accidental parody. Harry was nothing but himself, only ever raising his voice for homeruns and the occasional optical illusion pop fly (more so later in his career). He was friends to everyone and rightly so, may have one of the largest funerals ever. That the Phillies played yesterday’s game was a tribute to them for knowing their voice best, because I believe he would have wanted them to play the game he adored. They did so and won, with Shane Victorino even hitting a homer, pointing up to the area where Harry would have been announcing it. They did it for him; played AND won. And while our city’s fans may be nationally criticized as tough or harsh or even ignorant, Harry Kalas was one man who was unanimously beloved by all. Mention his name and you’ll instantly get an impression from just about anyone.
Though gone, he’ll never ever be forgotten.
Not to be neglected in posthumous conversation is one Marilyn Chambers. She too was found yesterday by her daughter, deceased in her bedroom. Marilyn initially became famous from being marketed nationally as the Ivory Snow girl on detergent boxes back in the seventies. She then switched gears and became an adult film star (they were genuine films back then, not necessarily deemed “porn” like most of today’s fare) starring along side fellow legend John Holmes in Behind The Green Door and a host of other movies all shot on film with actual locations and budgets. It was a different era and she was one of the pioneering figures.
To my own personal shock and disappointment I’ve never met either of them, Harry or Marilyn, in the circles that I keep. As unfortunate for me as that may be, at least I had the pleasure of knowing them via their trades and watching them for prolonged amounts of time. Others will only just be discovering them now that they’ve passed.
Ah well…time to mop my kitchen floor. I’ll have a drink for my two formerly on camera buddies this eve.

GREEN LANTERN #39--Guardians of the Universe? Yep, they're freakin' batty! I've wondered for years how the Corps and various individual Lanterns put up with these douches and I'm sure that with how 39 ended we're going to find out soon enough. It almost seems as though being a GL right now is something of a prison sentence with all these updated rules the little blue men are doling out. While the twist with the Blue rin on Jordan's finger was cool, I still think having him try on virtually every color's ring smacks of character butt-kissing overkill (an upcoming cover shows an Orange ring on his finger too).
Also in regard to the new Orange Lantern...too much Gollum as the character's template. The visuals are cool and the concept is cool, but Geoff is good enough to make the LOTR character similarity eventually go away.
Things are getting bad for the Corps...and they're definitely gonna get worse. Can't wait!
G.I. JOE #4--This book just keeps comin' with cool moments and a slow-paced rolling out of characters, which is really nice. Issue highlights for me were definitely Destro versus Baroness and the little past history toss out that Duke and Scarlet used to be an item. Good stuff!
TEEN TITANS #69—First let me say that while I’ll still miss up and coming artist Eddie Barrows, the final page’s announcement of Joe Bennett coming on has made me breathe a sigh of relief. It is nice to see them keeping quality on the title because at this juncture in the comic biz there aren’t many titles running with this consecutive issue count and a bad creator here or there can ruin the series (see the last Hawkman volume for an easy example).
This issue ended up the latest 4-part storyline and while I don’t understand the purpose of “The New Deal” from beginning to end, it did accomplish a thing or two in the book. Most importantly it brought in a few new members; something this title has really needed for about a year. You can tear down and strip the team of many things, but when you’ve got a team book consisting of three members there is a problem. There is still a ridiculously high bickering quotient in this title and I hope that something will change to that effect, especially since there is yet another writer coming onto the title soon.
It is good to see so many new characters being used though. Miss Martian is a cool riff on a classic DCU mainstay, Aqua-Girl needed some sort of spotlight (as do all the other forgotten Aquaman family of characters…TEMPEST anyone?), Kid Eternity is interesting and brings an element to the team beyond super-heroing and if Bombshell could ease up on the attitude she’d be an interesting new addition as well. I still miss Ravager. She really became such a standout character in this title that it is a shame to not still feature her as the resident “Wolverine” teammate. Argent would have been cool since she was on what may be considered one of the shittiest Titans teams ever…Offspring would have been nice because that sort of power/character could work better among younger characters than Plas’ does in the JLA. I’m just happy that Face jackoff died and I think it is awesome when a writer can make you cheer for a supposed good guy’s death.
JSA #25—Why are the entire Marvel Family’s dramatics so integral to the JSA book? I just don’t get it. Now don’t get me wrong, I like Black Adam and Captain Marvel as characters but for so many other characters in this title that are actually on the team and vastly neglected, only to feature people who aren’t even team members for four straight issues just doesn’t seem right to me. Add to my Marvel Family rant that it always seems the same stuff is happening to them in terms of gaining/losing/sharing powers and it just makes me feel that I’m in store for the same storyline every time they pop up somewhere. For a while they seemed to be making so many advances as characters and finally fully integrating into the DCU…but here we are again with them at square one.
I liked the issue. **laughs** Sounds it, right? The old guard admitted to recent mistakes, Atom Smasher is officially back in the fold and the twist of Batson’s ghost daddy was cool. As sacrilegious as it may sound, this may be the right time for Geoff to leave the title just to bring in a fresh look at this bunch. He has manned the helm for what, ten years worth of JAS stories? I love the guy but with all he is doing, this book began to feel like it wasn’t atop his list, dropping down to the lower half of the work order. Still though, this was at the very least a solid issue with some resolved plotlines.
DOKTOR SLEEPLESS #12—Just know that whether you are or are not reading this book, there is never enough of it to get a proper fix. This book is like the Bladerunner of comics; so ahead of its time that it stays completely under the radar of the masses. Buy it regularly and feel cool because you know of the title’s existence.
JACK OF FABLES #32—Boy there are some big time revelations in this issue! I can honestly say that I don’t know when the last time I laughed as hard at a comic book as hard as I did this one. Bill and Matt write Jack as such a magnificent ass…and no matter what happens to the man in terms of situations, I’ll always envy him for bedding all those geek chic hotties the Page sisters, which comes up again in this issue as a plot point. This issue also is a lead in to the big crossover that’ll be hitting the Fables-verse. Oh how I wanna spoil this issue’s reveals!!!! Ok, ok, time to move on to another book.
UMBRELLA ACADEMY #5—One more left. **sighs** I’ll have to read this second series installment all together because there is something I’m missing from the monthlies, something that I can’t decipher about the story. Time travel tales often do this to me and I’ll find myself lost in the past/present confusion of something like what is going on in this series with Number 5. Is he the villain? Now that there is a Séance baby in the past, have we already seen him as an adult somewhere in the present? It was really nice to see Pogo again and I wish he’d come back to the present time and live on with the rest of the gang but Gerard doesn’t fall into traditional trappings like that and that is partly what makes me love this series so much. A lot is happening and there is one issue to put all of it to bed. Rumor…fat Spaceboy…No. 5 versus No. 5? Can’t wait!
I have two other books that I love dearly but cannot read this eve. MADAME XANADU #9 and HOUSE OF MYSTERY #12 will have to wait for another night as I’m simply too tired to enjoy these densely written and lushly visual books.
…and to all, a goodnight.

Been a while, eh?
I still like this site and all, but with my friends finally getting me onto Facebook...it is just much less effort to maintain that page in contrast to this Myspace one and the communication between myself and people on my list is ten-fold what it is here despite my love for blogging on this site.
Generally though, besides wasting time on Facebook, I’ve been busy anyways mostly with writing. Besides that, I’m trying to make a concentrated effort in NOT chatting/meeting/whatever-ing new women from the internet because literally none of those relationships have ever worked and I’m honestly tired wasting my very precious (anymore) time on gals who just don’t want what I’m offering or looking for. With that mini-rant stated, let me tell you what I’ve been doing.
Thursday was relaxing even though I was doing lots of housework, general cleaning. After making my pot o’coffee I shredded enough old documents to literally fill four plastic shopping bags and put them into the recycling. Next up was all my nerd toys and collectibles, making sure whatever I had was stuff I wanted and straightening it out so that it took less space; mission accomplished. Besides my cleaning the basement floor, it is as done as it’ll get down there until I do more with my comics. What I plan on doing is bringing up a box at a time and reading through each box to see if I want to keep all this stuff. Fond memories or not, if you go back and read some old books you used to adore you’ll find that they’re total trash now and I buy way too much to keep something I will never want to read again…especially if it doesn’t hold any rumored financial value.
In the late noon Heather joined me and we ended up going into town for Di Bruno Brothers foods thanks to Mary & McManus, who gave me a lovely gift certificate to the place as a b-day gift. The score: a pound of chicken parm, a half-pound of ricotta-stuffed olive oil-marinated red peppers, one of their INCREDIBLE cheese spreads/dips, a dried spiced salami that was much like a pepperoni that you’d dice and that was about it. Yes, it was a lovely dinner of tasty randomness!
Friday was one of the most awesome days in recent memory. With it being my birthday that day I had decided a while ago that it’d be a day of fun and pampering. My hair was cut in the morning and Heather journeyed out with me into the wet city to shop for clothes over at Lucky Brand. I knew that I was more or less just bumming until the eve so it was fun being out in the rain with just my hoodie up for a block or two. After shopping came food. We dropped in on Tony Luke’s where I got a roast beef with sharp provolone sammich. Mmmmmmmmm I miss stuff like that but it is so awesome as an occasional treat! After eating, cleaning myself up and changing into some new duds it was off to Chickie’s for the evening’s festivities.
There was a nice turnout for my birthday and a good bit of the folks were people I’ve not seen in literal decades! There were former elementary schoolmates, high school pals and even a college buddy or two along with all my other pals from more recent years. Former crushes, ex-girlfriends…you name it and they all came out to see me and it was just freakin’ incredible! It has been a long time since I felt that I had this many people I could call friend. We ended the eve at the Oregon Diner of all places, with a gang of us walking straight there from Chickie’s with just a minor pee-break rest stop at my house. As birthday boy I just decided to let it all go over the weekend in terms of watching the food intake. At the diner I grubbed on a bowl of their signature French Onion Soup and then had Chicken Croquettes with mash potatoes and neon yellow gravy. This is the GREATEST drunk food ever and I promise it’ll suck up every last bit of alcohol in your body.
I think that night I slept on the floor. Heather camped out with me and we got up the next morning to run around some more!
Oh yeah, she had gotten me the recently released JOKER hardcover graphic novel that Azzarello wrote, so now I’ve got some reading to do this week. My pal Juanita hit me up with a Best Buy gift card which aided me in getting both Season 1 and 2 of Chapelle Show, Ghosts of the Abyss (a Jim Cameron Titanic docu) and Southland Tales.
I’m sure that there was more done, but at this point I can’t even remotely remember it all. All I know is that my birthday was spent exactly how I wanted it; good friends, good drinks and good food.

Category: Romance and Relationships
NOTE: This blog is best read along to one of the following song selections:
“Hold Me Now” (Thompson Twins) or “I Drove All Night” (Cyndi Lauper) if you’re into the 80’s
“The Way I Are” (Timbaland) or “Never Let Me Down” (Kanye feat. Jay-Z) if you’re into the hippity-hoppity
But sometimes, just sometimes I’d like to set the world ablaze with the below thoughts to something like “Burden in My Hand” (Soundgarden)
I guess that if life was simple of the powers up above cut us all a break or two the world would be too happy a place. As it stands, I’m one of the peons who seemingly must fight tooth and nail for everything I so desire…and more often than not, still come up empty.
Yet I continue to fight because that is all I know.
Tears aren’t flowing from my bright eyes because I don’t have someone to share my world with. I maintain my energy and vigor for each woman that I am into, as there aren’t many I’d ever wish to pursue romantically. For me, when I like someone in that manner there is no doubt in my mind and I’ll open express it. This, it seems, is rare in the world; free open expression. I’ve no walls that way. No games…just open communication and yet, I can’t find a single solitary soul that I’m into who is willing to accept and enjoy the ride into storybook love.
Sadly, though it is getting kinda funny honestly, I’ve got a cheering section comprised of both male and female friends. At the very least it makes me thankful that someone other than myself is shocked that I can’t seem to find (and keep) a girlfriend. I’m always hearing how it is men who suck or men who are immature or whatever, well darlings…it’d seem the women are equal opportunity offenders.
This isn’t “settling down” that I’m talking about either. I’m not SETTLING for anything. I’m talking about having that special someone to share the world with. Settling down? Hell, I wanna gear up with someone and travel! It would be so hot to meet someone, to talk to someone and see that unbridled passion for me mirror in their eyes, yet still we can maintain our own lives. I’m a writer in my free time so I need “me time.” How many people want to love someone and want their someone to have/retain their own lives?
If life, love and romance were a children’s toy, for me it’d be Voltron. See, if you know your toys you’ll know that Voltron was a team of what, five individual robotic lions that could all work on their own and kick ass in the world. But then, they had the ability to also combine and form this unstoppable giant ass-kicker that took it all to a whole new level. That is my ideal love life, Voltron! Two awesome people CAN meet, I will forever believe it…they can meet and be themselves and be awesome. Then, when they see it fit to do so, they can combine their talents to make new things together that they could never have done on their own.
I’m tired of flakes. Really. Tired. I’ve encountered so many hot messes in the last 10 years that I should be totally jaded and projecting false emotions onto people who don’t deserve them. Believe it or not for the last few weeks I’ve contemplated going on like “match.com” or those other horrid sites you see infomercials on. Somewhere out there, there has to be a woman who knows what she wants (me) and isn’t afraid to jump into the pool. I mean the water isn’t all that deep!
So there you have it. This is the most important matter in my world. Keep in mind that it isn’t something that is ruling my life, no matter how the rant above comes across. Imagine we’re at a bar and talking…the above love life rant would likely be rattled off in about a minute if I was someone like Banky from “Chasing Amy.” (Jason Lee is one of the best at that, isn’t he!?)
My writing and my focus on my home are the two bits that come in right after the love life. Ok, and an upcoming trip to Vegas but I swear that is it!
Writing would go much better if there were like 30 hours in a given day instead of the usual 24. There is nothing wrong at all in that department and eventually the world at large will be seeing these projects I’ve spoken about for so long. I always appreciate all the private little message I get about what it is exactly I’m creating. Soon, friends…soon!
The home is going through an emptying phase because I’m feeling really cluttered anymore. Even without owning dining room furniture or having anything of substance in my back second bedroom I’m feeling cluttered, go figure. Ebay is working for me again and I’m lessening a lot of the stuff I have in preparation for getting some of the house done. Maybe this’ll be the summer when I finally get a grill of some sort for the yard to make some yummy food for warm weather guests.
Vegas is…well, Vegas. Warm weather this time out. Good, fun friends to be there with. Wile E. Kayode and I, the two lovelorn gents that we are, will have to get into some trouble out west.
It always makes me feel better to scribble down something like this. It wasn’t directed at anyone in particular, you’ve got my word on that. We straight shooters tell people how we feel face to face (or at the least message to message) Oh! Once we get halfway through one of my comic projects, I promise to do a little revealing. It’ll be cool, I promise!
