Well Lads,
Just to give you an update on technological advances, Steve has been working round the clock (literally) for the last week to put a website exclusively dedicated to The J-Walkers (bless him...). When it's finished, there will be lots of cool stuff on it like new songs, photos (in a real virtual photo album!) and "tour" dates (ooooo...). So it should be really groovy. The official lauch for the website will be celebrated by a good old-fashioned drinking session, in a destination to be announced.
In other news around the country, rumours have been spreading that The J-Walkers are heading back to a secret studio to begin recording a 6 track EP. Well, it's true. We are aiming to have a rough copy done by Sept 1 and after that... who knows... watch this space.

The J-Walkers taking things a step further Published Date: 12 August 2009 By Kevin Forde The J-Walkers are a three piece rock band made up of Steven Cassells on vocals, Omar Mahfoud on guitar and Clifford Deane on drums. Their brand of guitar led pop rock music has been winning them a host of new fans recently and led to them signing up with Darren Farrell music management.
Lead singer and Castledermot local Cassells began his musical journey at 16 when a demo he made was picked up by Hype Entertainment in Kilkenny. "They organised for me to play a singer songwriter night and it took off from there".
Cassells admits he found the experience intimidating and, "nearly vibrated off the stage he was so nervous".
He quickly decided he needed a full band and was put in touch with Omar Mahfoud through his music teacher at the time. "We've been together ever since", says Cassells going through some 11 or 12 musicians in that time.
"At one stage we had cello, viola, violin and clarinet, laughs Cassells. "We decided that wasn't for us. It was a live nightmare for mics.
In its current make-up the band has been together for just six short months but have accomplished more in that time than Mahfoud and Cassells had achieved in all the years before that. As Cassells admits for a long time, "nothing was happening".
However, the last few months have brought gigs throughout Dublin including their favourite show at the DIT Battle of the Bands in the Button Factory and a final appearance at the Oxegen Platform V competition. While neither proved successful, at least in terms of winning the contests the DIT gig heralded a tantilising offer for the young group.
"After the show a chap approached us from a management company and offered to work with us.". The band have now been with Darren Farrell management for three months and have been making use of all his requisite music industry knowledge
Recording an Ep is the next step for the group which regularly uses guitarist Mahfoud's recently built studio. "He spent a fortune on it, God love him" reveals Cassells.
A converted garage with an electronic drum kit and a separate recording booth it is ideal for a young band wishing to make some good quality demos.
At the moment the band are getting ideas on paper and already have a producer lined up for the Ep which should be finished in the next few months.
Preparations for recording have been hit by the defection of bass player Bernard Kavanagh to his other band Blessington based covers group Blackwater. There is no hard feelings, however, as the singer accepts living so far away was too much for him.
They are now in the market for a new bassist, preferably one "who could also be a backing singer".
Other band members have been auditioned for the role but as Cassells laughs it just sounds like, "bad karaoke".
As well as a bass player, strings will be enlisted for the studio recordings though not neccessarily on stage. "For live its a shambles unless we have a great set up which you don't ever have". You can hear the pop rock of the J-Walkers at myspace.com/thejwalkersmusic

On Saturday night, we played in the second of two Semi-finals for the Oxegen BOTB. The venue was The Dew Drop Inn in Kill, Co.Kildare. There were 6 bands competing and 3 bands went through to the final.
Due to timing restrictions we only got to play three songs, so we went with Grand Avenue, Help Me (a new one, work in progress) and finished with So Damn Easy. The crowd were in great form and even helped us out with a bit of the singing towards the end (Thanks folks!).
The competition on the night was extremely strong, and to be honest, I
didn't think we would get through at all. Amazingly though, we were
one of the three bands that promoted to the final! So we are due to perform again in a six horse race on 19th June for a place on the 'Oxegen New Band' Stage. Hopefully luck will swing our way...

After a disappointing run at the last battle, we got news that we are to play in the semi-final of the BOTB for Oxegen. The semi-final will take place in the Dew Drop Inn in Kildare this coming Saturday. I don't know what are prospects are like, but it is worth a shot. We have been practicing steadily as usual so hopefully some of those hours invested will bare fruit. The winners of the competition get to play at the new bands stage at Oxegen, so you never know... I will fill in more details on the gig slot when I get them.

Hi Lads,
Hope ye are all well. Firstly, thanks to all who attended the gig last Wednesday in Andrew's Lane. It was good fun indeed and great to have a few people to get the dancing goin ;).
So, on to business. The J-Walkers politely and humbly request your support for the final of the DIT Battle of the Bands in The Button Factory, Templebar, on this coming Wednesday 29th. There will be four bands competing for a top prize that includes recording time and some other as-of-yet-undefined prizes. We would love to get as much support there on the night, it is the biggest venue we will have played EVER (so far...).
The science bit: Doors open around 8. Tickets on the night cost a whopping €10 on the door (Ugh, we are not that good!), but you can get tickets from me for €7 (or €6 or €5 if you bargain). The thing is, we have to give back all the unsold tickets on Tuesday SO TELL ME BY MONDAY IF YOU WOULD LIKE A TICKET! I will keep you one. I realise the price is steep, so don't feel obliged to come along. However, if you have a glint in your eye for a bit of craic, we'd be delighted to see you.
Thanks again,
Omar.

Hi all,
On Wednesday night we played in the Trinity battle of the bands, heat two, in The Purty Kitchen. There were 5 acts and all were to a high standard. We did not get through (2 bands got through), but it was good practise none the less. Thanks to all the lads who turned up out of the blue to support us!
Unfortunately, the whole affair was a bit disappointing in my opinion. The sound system was sub-par (not the fault of the sound engineer), and only one band (one of the eventual winners) got a sound check beforehand. There was also a disparity in the amount of time alloted to the bands with some bands being cut off before their last song (ie. us and 3 other bands), while other acts got extra time to finish their set.
Anyhow, all in all it was a good experience. It has actually made us want to practise more, and Steve keeps ringing me with new ideas for a stage act (he always rings when I am trying to sleep...). The bands we met were really friendly and we got great feedback and encouragement from them. Thanks lads. Best of luck to the two bands who progressed to the final.
As for us, we have our eyes on the prize for the DIT battle of the bands on the 29th April, so it should be class!

Last night saw The J-Walkers return to the initmate setting of the former Quill pub. The J-Walkers played an hour-long set, then making way for a band called Funzo. Needless to say both bands gave it their all, the result being a really enjoyable night of music. Thanks to Funzo, a pleasant and easygoing bunch of lads, who were very helpful with soundchecking and who put on a tasty couple of hours music. We had a great night and I hope whoever was there had a good laugh. It was the first time we have played a full set with the new band set-up and it was a chance to iron out a few crinkles before the battle of the bands next week. Thanks to everyone who turned up.

We played in the first round of the DIT Battle of the Bands last Tuesday in The ThinkTank, Templebar. We were one of four bands performing, and each outfit put on an entertaining show. It was a really enjoyable night. Luckily, we were declared winners on the night, which means that we are through to the final in about a month's time. Thanks a million to all of you who turned out to support us and get the atmosphere going. The four of us really enjoyed just having fun on stage and performing the music we have been working on recently. I hope you all had an enjoyable night. I'll keep you posted about the final, and keep an eye on the site for upcoming gigs.
