Meat Katie "Tension E.P"

Lot49 label boss and tech funk pioneer Meat Katie is a man well renowned for his outstanding collaborative releases, but it has to be said there is something quite special about those rare releases where we get to see Meat Katie’s sound stripped bare and solo. ‘The Tension EP’ not only features Meat Katie recording solo but there also isn’t a remix insight - this is pure unadulterated tech funk from one of the genres founding fathers.

The opening cut ‘The Real El Santos’ kicks things off with a dark edged techno rub that draws on heavy twisted bass and synth lines to whip up an intense dancefloor vibe. ‘Needles and Pins’ is up next, taking things into a deep warehouse groove with tight drums and distorted hits. This is a superbly dirty piece of tech funk that is bound to find favour across the board. Penultimate track ‘Lucia’ lifts the intensity another notch with reverb laden drums and a killer rolling b-line, add some top end bleeps, squelches and stabs and you have a monster of a tune! Final piece ‘Tension’ is a slice of tech infused house music with a vocal sample that is guaranteed to get stuck in your head and in ironic opposition to its title this is a truly warm and engaging piece of music that leaves you feeling like you’ve spent a weekend in the sun.

The tech-funk dons are back to deliver an anthemic, peaktime riff-athon in the massive 'Non-Believer'. Reminiscent of Daft Punk doing battle with a band of outlaw robotic slam dancers in a techno mosphit, this is headbang electro of the highest order, with outstanding DJ feedback from radio, press & DJs alike.

"The tech-funk masters once again combine their studio skills for a pure stomping slab of 4/4 brilliance. The incessant beat just builds and builds in a simple yet effective fashion showing that often less is more. Certainly not minimal, just working on rhythms, some effects and a pure understanding of what it is to drive a crowd insane!!" [iDJ Reviews]

This story was taken from a tour diary that appeared on the tech-funk manifesto, which I did in 2008. I got roasted on a few australian forums, not sure why, a lot of insults. I would like to take this oppotunity to say that all i'm doing is repeating what happened to me. I certainly do not consider this the norm for Adelaide, not by a long shot, I have many friends there who laughed (like I did) at my misfortune.

And if by any chance I've caused offence to a handful of people who live their lives through an online community .......... Good!

x

Mark

Well with Melbourne out of the way I had the pleasure of Adelaide  to look forward to. My only experience of adalaide was one great party on a thursday night, and one shockingly bad one when the air con broke down in the venue the night before (it was like djing in a Turkish bath).

I was picked up and taken straight to the venue. It was a run down pub called Electric Light Hotel on the out skirts of town, desperately in need of some attention.
The sound guy turned round and said "oh you use cd’s’ we only have these old 1000’s mk 1’s"(that were completey trashed), and the mixer was a pioneer 500. He gave me a kind  "I know mate I just work in this shit hole" look. The sound system was about half the size of the monitering  system at Miss Libertine's the night before. Accommodation  wise, I had been offered a room for the night above the pub (with a shared bathroom) but (funnily enough) I opted to go check into a hotel.

I got a call about 1am from the promoter saying
"you're on at 1.30am I'll grab you at 1.15am, can you stick to R&B and the more commercial end of dance music please".
Before I had chance to say anything he hung up. The thing is I get nervous about playing the music that people come to hear me play, this added a new dimension to my fears. I sat outside the hotel and the guy picked me up  45mins late at around 2am. The promoter had two absolute bruisers in tow, (so this gets better). I was informed we were celebrating one of their mates freedom (just been released from prison) and they couldn't wait to hear me play …… that was the moment that I wished I was an R&B dj with an arsenal of commercial house & hip hop in the bag.

We arrived at the pub and i'm thinking to myself " is there ever going to be a right moment to break it to these guys im not ‘the man’, or should I just duck into the
toilets climb out the window and run away" Walking into the room where i had to play, at best, were 20 people standing around with a big screen TV showing the Australian football highlights …. Writing this out now I couldn’t make this up if I tried. I turned to the promoter and asked if I could have a word outside. I told him (in a begging way) that I felt I might not work so well and what I play may not appeal to his crowd. He responded with "oh, ok" and to my amazement  I was off the hook, as simple as that (with my limbs still attached).  I had a drink with the ‘free man’ who was celebrating by giving everyone dead arms,  I wished them all the best headed back to the hotel,  grabbed my stuff and got the first flight I could get on out of Adalaide .

12 hours later as I sat in my plush Melbourne hotel café eating a world class cooked English breakfast (eggs bacon sausage beans toast, the whole bit….) I could hardly believe the previous night!

South west londoner  Mark Pember (AKA Meat Katie) has had a long history in Dance music. In his time he has recorded for such prestigious labels such as Wall of Sound, R&S Records , Kingsize,  Bedrock, Perfecto, Great Stuff, Renaissance, Saw  not to mention his first record deal, signed to Iggy pops Kill City Records (as a bass player in 3 piece skate punk band Sandladder). Pember has also remixed for / collaborated with Arthur Baker, U.N.K.L.E, Boy George, Deep Dish, D.Ramirez, Peace Division, Chicken Lips, Robbie Rivera & James Zabelia, to name but a few.

To date Pember has released three Meat Katie artist albums, Off the bone (1998), Long to belong (2000)  & Vibrator (2006), all diverse in style and vibe but glued together by his techy and lo-fi feel',  he has worked with such vocalist as Kurt wagner  from  Nashville indie/country band Lambchop, garage/trash vocalist  Holly Golightly,  new york house legend roland Clark and UK Diva Katherine Ellis, in 2000 mark also made a one off alternative album 'Never The Less' under the name Avenue A, a collaborative project with Jason o' Bryan co-producuer with the Dub pistols, it was this project that lead Mark to score the  music for film adaptation of martin amis’  'Dead Babies', an art house production by Gruber films (Shooting fish, waking ned), starring Paul Bettany.

Arguably its Marks work as a  DJ that has really seen him shine,  a world class performer with  excellent technical ability and a great understanding of the dance-floor, he has built a reputation worldwide.  Those who have seen him play  will know that it is his diversity and energy that has earned him such respect, his toughTechy style, has seen him play across the globe alongside an eclectic group of DJs from Digitalism, Justice and Simian mobile disco, Soulwax and Erol Alkan, to Deep Dish, Steve Lawler, James Zabiela, Sasha & Digweed, Carl Cox, even Armand van buren & Marco V,  and not forgetting some of the world’s top Breaks acts including, Plump DJ’s, Stanton Warriors. He'’s supported live acts such as Chemical brothers, Pendulum,  Basement jaxx, Represent, and Infusion, and He even recently played on the Valve Soundsystem as one of the only non-Drum ‘n Bass DJs ever to do so.

It is these djing skills that have led him to compile and mix compilations  for such land mark series such as, Bedrock breaks, Fabric live & most recently Sessions' for Ministry of Sound, a very unique dj, over the years he has perfected a cross over of techno electro with a subtle break beat feel (better know as tech funk)  in recent interviews mark described his own playing, when pressed about pigeon holing himself  genre wise he replied  “The only thing pigeon holes are good for.... is pigeons", mark is living proof that taste is more important than simply following the crowd and bandwagon jumping.

Mark has also been working on an audio visual show along side VJ Anyone (currently rated No. 3 in the World) together they have taken their unique show to clubs such as ..Fabric, Urban Gorilla, Technique and  Festivals such as Glastonbury, Glade, and many more.

Not satisfied with being a world class dj producer the self confessed workaholic also found time to set up and run his own highly influence LOT49 imprint (with Dylan Rhymes, whom he also shares a studio with in south west london under the same name).
Lot 49 has without a doubt maintained a reputation as being a taste-making label, never shy to experiment with multi genres and with over 50 releases under its belt featuring artists such as, Dubfire , Audiojack, D Ramirez, Elite Force, Dexter, Phil Kieran, Lee Coombs, Robbie Rivera, Marco Bailey, James Talk, Alex Metric, Lutzenkirchen, Evil 9 and  obviously Meat Katie & Dylan Rhymes, the Lot49 steamroller shows no sign of slowing down, it will celebrate its 5 year anniversary later this year with a label compilation CD/ with a an exclusive DVD documentary about the label and artists, a huge  warehouse party is also planned in londons Old street to mark the occasion and then off for a world tour early 2010.

The Future.
On a production level mark has been commissioned by loop-masters to compile a sample pack for their prestigious 'Artist series' (alongside Deadmau5, Coldcut, 20/20 vision), and a fourth Meat Katie album is currently in the works and will see the light of day March 2010

Here is the second installment, it is an excerpt, i know, ends a bit abruptly, and if by any chance your offended or shocked easily, please stop reading now!

Dubai stories.

I've recently came back from playing in dubai. I've been out there a few times but this was the first festival i've performed at out there, in fact it was the first dance music festival in the UAE. On arrival i managed to get the third degree at dubai airport, my fault really, i had a broken cigarette in my dj bag, not sure why, i should have checked my bags before leaving (i was more concerned with de-porning my laptop to be honest!). Anyway this broken cigarette sent security into a whirl, at one point i was surrounded buy about 5 security gaurds all, with dogs, examining this this tiny piece of tabacco  (while i was standing there in my underwear. If i wasn't so worried about what was going on im sure i would have felt humiliated). After a good two hours they decided my broken fag did not pose a threat to national security and let me go. I headed off to the the millennium a plush 5 star hotel, although a dump by dubai standards.

A friend of mine, Ben, picked me from the hotel. Ben is an english lad made good out there. He's  a successful  promoter who had bought me to dubai three times previously, he was also djing at the event and im sure he was instrumental in me getting booked.

We had a good hour and a half drive from dubai to abu dhabi (where the festival was), the event itself was on a private island. There are some really strict rules out in the middle east, dance music is not the most popular of styles due to its association with drug culture, pretty much all of the parties are in the grounds or in hotels themselves, its a way round their strict alcohol laws. Anyway the party had a right bizarre bunch of djs but all very good within their respective fields; Sandy rivarea, Wally Lopez , nick fanciulli, marco v, cosmic gate & Atb.
A bit heavy on the trance, but i get the impression that trance is the dance music of choice out in the middle east(its the same in tel aviv and beruit).

Ok (im getting side tracked!)- so the drive . We engaged in your average travel banter about how dubai had grown since my last visit and the price of houses credit crunch, ect…… then somehow we got into the conversation of faith and belief. Natalie (Bens wife who is also english) started telling us a story about a young French boy of 16 who was abducted from the street by a group of muslim men, and took this him out into the desert and gang raped him. There seemed to be some real issues with the legal side of things, but the case finally went to court after a lot of pressure from the kids mother and the ex pat community. The men recieved sentences between 16-18 years, but where this story gets messed up is unbelievably the court also tried to convict the boy for having sex with a man which is outlawed by religious law. Luckily enough this case was dropped, but the scary thing here was they attempted to prosecute a rape victim. A shocking story to say the least.

Natalie made up for that disturbing tale by telling us about the King of Oman being openly gay, surrounded by young boys, all of which wear the same gold rings which is a sign that they are the kings  ‘special friend's’. Obviously this is against the law in a muslim country, so this is the stance the king has taken: He tells his people that the reason they are so wealthy and prosperous is that it all comes down to the fact he has been possessed by a jing (an evil spirit). This jing is the goddess spirit of the sea, and the price he must pay for his peoples wealth is that he is made to pay penance- by having to have sex with young boys!  He says its not him, it’s the jing that is being pleasured. I laughed my arse off as Natalie explained this. Not only must he have sex, but he must also give the jing material things, like gold, diamonds, things of immense value. He must take them out to sea and drop them into the ocean as a gift to the goddess of the sea . This is true because whenever boats have gone out to check...all the valuables have gone, the jing must have taken them away.

Goes to show what you can get away with!

(Next week i promise a lighter hearted story)
