here are the records i spent my hard earned cash on this month. needless to say Linkwood is the shining star, followed closely by Sidwho. but really every record here is a winner. the Tony Allen Moyage 12" is primarily meant as a set opener, i'd been mulling purchasing that one since it came out in 2006 and i think i'm finally at a musical place where i can use it effectively in a set. ARTIST - 12" TITLE - LABEL - CAT # Tony Allen - Moyage - Honest Jon's - HJP 32 Je Davu - I Need You Tonight - Raw Meat - RM 001 Matias Aguayo - Walter Neff - Kompakt - KOMPAKT 183 Sidwho - Vote Bowie For President - Walls Have Ears - EARS 3006 Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart - Heavenly - HVN 212RX Zwicker - Songs Of Lucid Dreamers Remix EP 1 - Compost - COMP 3331 They Came From The Stars I Saw Them - Rabbit Seal Monkey - This Is Not An Exit - TINAE 024 Soul Clap Pop Edits - Dreams - Soul CLap Pop Edits - WLB 03 Marius - Jet Set - Maxi Discs - MD 03 Linkwood - Firecracker EP 4 - Firecracker - FIREC 004 peas! -tal twitter.com/talmklein

i'm an old mix tape nut. i used to make them with my cassette player back in the day all the time, but these days i still enjoy putting together tracks specifically for a road trip. not as a dj, but as a guy going on a road trip. just me and a cd, not a ipod or zune playlist. there's something to be said about limiting yourself to 74 minutes of music for the duration of a trip, which means this is a cd that will be playing on repeat during your whole trip, it will be your only source of music, so you better think long and hard about the music you put on it because it's all you've got.
i'll be driving from new orleans to hurricane country in florida with my wife. here's what i put together:
1. Vyvienne Long - Yoshimi 2. Tom McRae - Walking 2 Hawaii (live acoustic version) 3. Baxter Dury - Fungus Hedge 4. Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Blanchard 5. Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan - Get The Party Started 6. Dire Straits - Single Handed Sailor 7. Robert Palmer - Work To Make It Work 8. Rod Stewart - Alright For An Hour 9. Elvis Presley - Gentle On My Mind 10. Tom Jones - Detroit City 11. Millie Jackson - A Child Of God 12. Dianna Ross & Marvin Gaye - I'll Keep A Light In My Window 13. Billy Martin & Jennifer Charles - Double Game 14. Bran Van 3000 - Drinking in L.A. 15. Len - Steal My Sunshine 16. James Brown - Blues and Pants
so as you can see, some rare stuff, some pop stuff, some new stuff, some old stuff, some glad stuff, some blue stuff. i think it's a keeper. i enjoy listening to old mix tapes because they remind me of the trips i've taken. the playlist becomes etched in my mind and associated with all the experiences i have during my adventures :)

August is proving to be quite a month around here. I'm looking forward to the Regrooved Tour whereupon Slim and I take our Sly Players shenanigans around festival circuits from the UK to Croatia. Speaking of The Sly Players, there's a brand new Michael Jackson rework we did of "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" on the FREE Michael Jackson Regrooved EP which you can grab here: http://www.drunkfunk.net/goodgroove/MJ_Regrooved.zipAlso, be sure to check out my August chart on Juno which features some of the records I'll be throwing down on tour. I hope to see some of you as I parade around Europe with Slim. I'll also be making a few stops on the East Coast in September, but that's a blog post for another time ;) Peas! P.S. If you haven't already, please take a moment to check out The Sly Players EP and The Disco Builders EP :)

July is proving to be a great month for me. With my first artist EP on the Goodgroove label (The Sly Players being myself and Slim Goodgroove) as well as the first EP of my new band The Disco Builders on Aniligital Music. I was a little bit selfish in charting both at the top of my chart, but those two are honestly my top 2 records right now, so maybe selfish but not dishonest! You can check out the rest of my July chart which includes new releases by Fort Knox Five, Moodymanc, and one of my favorite artists in the world Dorothys Fortress - It's all right here: http://www.juno.co.uk/charts/dj/348992-Tal_M_Klein/295711-Chart/And, as promised in the title of this blog - A free EP of James Brown reworks by the Goodgroove allstars: Super Bad - Regrooved by The Sly Players Get Up Off That Thing - Regrooved by Featurecast Can't Take It With You - Regrooved by The Breakbeat Junkie Woman - Regrooved by Fuzzbox It's A New Day - Regrooved by Slynk It's A Man's Man's Man's World - Regrooved by Parker Mind Power - Regrooved by Basement Freaks My Thang - Regrooved by DJP

Here is my latest record purchase, loosely based on my Juno chart. If you're only going to buy one record, make it the Architeq 12" because that Fulgeance Emotronical mix is probably the best thing I've heard on wax this year. Oh, and of course while you're over at your favourite record shop, don't forget to pick up a copy of the new Basement Freaks 12" on Aniligital! JET TRICKS feat ADEFUNKE: Remote Control EP (Legere Recordings) (LEGO 011) TONY BOZAK DJ: Disco Aerobics: Recorded Live In New York City Jupiter 3000 Discotheque (Disco Aerobics) (DDD 82) GREENWOOD RHYTHM COALITION/MIDNIGHT LAB BAND: White Label Number 1 (Names You Can Trust) (WHITE) ARCHITEQ: Birds Of Prey Versions EP (Tirk) (TIRK 045) SEBASTIEN TELLIER: Kilometer (Strangelets remixes) (Supersoul Recordings) (SSREC 010) TROPICAL TREATS: Afrikan Riddims (Gamm) (GAMM 047) DOC DELAY: Detritus (Funk Weapons US) (AFAFW 20) SUPER VALUE: Super Value 4 (special edits) (Super Value) (SV 04) 6TH BOROUGH PROJECT: Part Two (Instruments Of Rapture) (IOR 002) IN FLAGRANTI: Rvng Of The Nrds Vol 8 (Rvng International) (NRDS 02) That's all for now. Lots more coming soon. Keep it disco. Peas, Tal

this is more to keep things straight in my head than anything else.. here's what's coming out on wax this year:
the next aniligital 12" is basement freaks' "gypsy breaks" with remixes by me, breakbeat junkie, umbo, and my boogieburg boys spark arrester. release date is April 13 2009. the digital comes out a month later and will include a bonus remix by quasamodo.
then we have my rubs & remixes EP which is really interesting and is an incredibly packed EP, it's got six tracks on it, so much so that we had to get a custom lacquer pressed by george horn at fantasy studios to ensure we had enough loudness and fidelity on the record for dj use. release date for that is May 11 2009. the EP includes two vinyl exclusive remixes by me, one for da wiesel's goodgroove classic boogaloo stomp and one for k'bonus' uh yeah. the digital will drop concurrently and will have its own exclusives, including my remix of pulpfusion's tune in and drop out, and the south city allstars remix of plastic starfish previously only available on vinyl.
after that release dates get a bit hazy, but here goes:
anthony mansfield & tal m. klein disco villainy 12" on aniligital music.
the sly players ep on goodgroove records. those of you not in the know, the sly players are me and slim from goodgroove.
disco builders ep (the disco builders is my band with john bertrand and hillary hightower) on aniligital music with a remix by the hardway brothers.
all of the above three actually have stuff recorded and so are definitely coming out. now let's get a bit foggier. here are planned releases that aren't even started yet:
a new ep with me and guts (if you haven't checked out guts, go grab his le bienheureux album right now, it's in my top 5 albums of last year)
a new project with esl's thomas blondet
and that is about as far as i can see in my crystal ball. now, for other remixes i've done that belong to other labels so i don't know what their plans are, look for the following tal m. klein remixes for the following songs from the following labels:
artist - track - label
onur engin - we be groovin - timewarp (this one is coming out March 23) magic disco - my steeze - south city recordings alice russel - got the hunger? - tru thoughts issa bagayogo - poye - six degrees (you can download the radio edit of this one for free from the six degrees blog link on this page) umbo - groove on - goodgroove (two remixes of this one, as tal m. klein and as the sly players)
that's all i can remember. there's probably more and i'm a bad person for forgetting. i'm attaching a recent live (trainwrecks and all) 2 hour mix i did at stanford's kzsu as a consolation prize for my rudeness :)

i was gonna hold off on making a purchase this week because i know the FK5 stuff is coming out this month, but i just couldn't resist when i heard the new big m bootie, especially since those sell out so quickly and then i miss out. not this time!
DENNIS YOUNG: Dervish Delight (Relish) MIDNIGHT LAB BAND: Run Riot (Names You Can Trust) RUCKUS ROBOTICUS: Here We Go (Grease) BIG M BOOTIE: Big M Bootie Vol 6 (Big M Bootie) YELLE: Ce Jeu (Astralwerks) AIWA: Dioud (Wikkid) OF MONTREAL: Jon Brion Remix EP (Polyvinyl) DONOVAN feat G RIZO: Breakin' (Work It Baby)
some of these will be showing up in my Juno chart next week. aside from the Big M Bootie, the other significant record of note is the Aiwa's Dioud 12" with a Banco De Gaia remix that's simply good enough to eat.
go buy some records!! (especially my new Crawlin Up The Spout 12" if you haven't already)

my latest record purchase, the biggest find this time around is Tatsuo Sunga record which has a sick edit of the title track "Enter The Dragon". i've been looking for this record FOREVER and finally by some fluke it turned up. highly recommended as an ideal crossover record for people who like to play the funk breaks and disco because it's a nice transition from either sound to the other.
Artist / Title / Catalog #
BASEMENT SOUL / People Make The World / KAT 005 DAILY BREAD / How Do You Do / SCR 30 TATSUO SUNAGA PRESENTS ORQUESTA DE LA LUZ / Enter The Dragon EP / DM-1002 J & M / Evening Of Love / PATH 001 AMPLIFIED ORCHESTRA / Cosmic Slope / AO 8 6TH BOROUGH PROJECT / Part One / IOR 001 WILD RUMPUS / Rock The Joint / BITCH 014 FAT CAMP / Anorak Edits Vol 1 / ANK 001
i'm looking forward to a rocking a set using these and some other gems at the Special Disco Version party, and by other gems I mostly mean relishing any opportunity to drop The Revenger Of El Santoro by Dorothys Fortress which is really my favorite track at the moment. i could just keep rolling the needle back to the beginning of the track, it's really that good. i'm hoping to get a chance to rock out the decks with Damon Baxtor when i head to the the UK in june, i'm working on my own answer to The Revenger Of El Santoro which i am calling "Santa Anna's Concession (Buffalo Hump Comes Correct)"
