Hollywood, CA/Nashville, TN/New York, NY (PRWEB) September 28, 2007 -- Last Thursday, the World Series Of Music was held in Nashville, Tennessee and featured six finalists chosen by Billboard Magazine out of tens of thousands of artist entries. The annual event is sponsored by Disc Makers, the largest producer of independent product in the world. Judging the finals for the event was MCA Universal producer and longtime veteran hit-maker, Robert Metzgar. The six finalists at the event were Rebecca Zapen, The Issues, Special Ed & Shortbus, J Peele, The Zydepunks and WSNB. Winning the World Series Of Music is the most prestigious award an indie band can receive from their peers in the music business. It dwarfs the American Idol competition which is primarily for solo pop music artists.

The sold out event was standing room only. Over 100 companies in the music business participated in paying for the event which featured a delicious chef prepared dinner buffet and open bar at 3rd & Lindsley, located at 818 3rd Avenue South in downtown Nashville. Sponsors of the event were Billboard Magazine, Cakewalk, Dean Markley, Disc Makers, Drum Magazine, Electronic Musician, Ibanez, KRK Systems, Remix Magazine, Remo, Roland, Sabian, Shure Electronics, Sonicbids, Soundlab Studios, Tama, Taxi and Nashville's top 10 indie labels by Billboard ranking. "The top 10 Billboard ranked indie labels that participated were Big Machine Records , BNA Records, Category Five, Platinum Plus Universal, Curb Records, Rounder Records, Koch Nashville, Equity Records, Broken Bow Records and Universal South's Superlatone."
www.platinumplusuniversal.com

"The winner of the event by an extremely close margin was Special Ed & Shortbus, an infectiously hilarious bluegrass group who performed a blistering set of songs and instrumentals" seldom seen in this town of the world's best musicians. It was clear why these six artists made the finals out of thousands who entered. The quality of the finalists musicianship was simply overwhelming. "I saw music excellence personified in these artists," Metzgar told a crew of reporters.

"Just give Rebecca Zapen a violin or Special Ed a banjo and either act could blow away 99.9% of all the artists on American Idol." Metzgar told Entertainment Headline News reporters who attended, "The World Series Of Music has some of the greatest live music I have ever seen performed live on a stage in the city of Nashville." Every one of these artists could have been an American Idol finalist and winner easily. Their musicianship was astounding, even to many of the session players who attended to cheer for their favorite player. "Disc Makers is such a great company. They give all the finalists a check for $1,000.00 just for making the finals." Metzgar's VIP table was like a Who's Who in the music business.

It's a good thing JV's Restaurant serves North Carolina-style barbecue. Chances are people will be craving the bar's home-cooked recipe after they get an earful of the music of WSNB from Hickory, N.C. The band's brand of foot-stomping electric blues practically begs the listener to pop a cold one and tear into some pulled pork.

"We are all about barbecue and beer. I don't know if you've seen a picture of us, but people think we're a competitive eating team when we show up," bass player Clay Ford said via telephone from North Carolina.

The quartet of seasoned players -- Ford, singer and harmonica player Willie Shane Johnston, guitarist Nathan "Big Daddy" Brown and drummer Jason Gardner -- came together just a little more than two years ago. The group has been a finalist or semifinalist in numerous international, national and regional independent music and blues competitions.

The Mississippi-born Johnston has a voice bred for the blues think Leon Redbone and Dr. John by way of Axl Rose. Brown demonstrates a tasteful touch in crafting the band's saucy slide-guitar licks. Together, the two blaze gloriously on their twin harmonica and lead guitar lines.

Although rooted in gritty Delta blues, WSNB's music rocks with distinct force, thanks to the hard-hitting rhythms of Gardner and Ford, at times recalling Led Zeppelin when that band was in a boogieing mood. Blues lovers and fans of AC/DC-style no-frills riff-rock will find plenty to groove on.

"We sing nasty blues," Ford said when asked about the significance of the band's name.

Originally he said, WSNB was supposed to evoke radio station call letters. But fans soon took to crafting their own interpretations, and that was the one that stuck.

The bassist said that his roots lie in Appalachian mountain music and that each of the band's players brings distinct influences to WSNB's sound. The band released its debut CD, "Jomo Swamp Root Boogie," last year and plans to issue a second before the year's end.

For food and the blues, the boys in WSNB boast big appetites

..
By Steve Wildsmith
of The Daily Times Staff

If you want to hear some tired old blues or Southern rock covers this weekend at Brackins Blues Bar, you might want to stop by an ATM on your way.

The band that's doing a two-night stand there -- WSNB, from Hickory, N.C. -- will play them for you, but you've got to pony up.

"It's going to be a good time, and we try to be interactive with the audience, but we're not going to be a jukebox," guitarist/vocalist Nathan "Big Daddy" Brown told The Daily Times this week. "If you want to hear 'Sweet Home Alabama' or 'Mustang Sally' or 'Freebird,' write it on a $100 bill, put it up on the table and I guarantee we will play it. Otherwise, bring your woman out, sit back and you will have a good time."

He laughs -- a good-natured sound from a good ol' boy who peels off some dirty blues licks like an Army private on kitchen detail with a pile of potatoes -- but he's also serious. WSNB will play the blues, but show-goers will be getting a healthy mix of originals and covers guaranteed to rock the house instead of retread the same old bald tires of the blues genre.

"I think probably our biggest cover as of now is a Chris Whitley tune, 'Phone Call from Leavenworth,'" Brown said. "As for original songs, 'Rusted' off of the first album is a good one, and off the new one, I'd say 'Jezebel' or 'Mississippi Moon.'"

The band -- which includes vocalist/harp blower Willie Shane Johnston, drummer Jason Gardner and bassist Clay Ford -- got together in May 2006, when Johnston got a call from Brown. Brown, Gardner and Ford had been playing together in a Hickory outfit and had recently parted ways with their singer; Brown was familiar with Johnston's chops, called him up and the rest is history.

"He showed up, and it just kind of clicked -- we were all just ready to write songs and jam," Brown said. "We're all just able to be ourselves. Of course, Willie's always going to take center stage because he's the singer, but the rest of the band gels as one. That's what we were all kind of wanting, and thankfully, people have been digging it."

Since forming, WSNB has become a popular group on the local blues circuit; this weekend marks a return to Brackins, where the crowd is always hospitable and ready for a good time, Brown added.

"It's always good up there -- it's cool to play in a place like that, where people like to have a good time," he said. "I think the single men and women get a charge and get on the dance floor, and maybe they get lucky."

If drinking and catting around aren't on the agenda for this weekend's two shows, there's always the band's name -- although WSNB officially stands for "We Sing Nasty Blues," the guys encourage fans to come up with their own acronyms -- like "We Seek New Buffets."

"If you've seen our pictures, you know we're all some big boys," Brown said with a laugh. "The music we play makes you think of pulled pork and drinking beer, so we like to stay alert on the best places to eat. We're definitely not going to win any beauty contests, but we do like to get up there and jam."
