T-Model's 80-something years old... his Mississippi Driver's License says he's 84, his US Passport says he's 87, and he says he's 88... so you decide. He started playing guitar based on Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, but T's only got one style: his own. T's illiterate, so no use in talking to him about tuning. They call it "open T" because it's his own unique sound. "The Ladies Man" is T-Model Ford's seventh album, and what makes it unique is that it's entirely acoustic. Recorded at Planet Sound Studios in Wichita, Kansas, the album is the product of a live, one-take afternoon session with no overdubs and minimal mixing. T wanted to play acoustic guitar and have 100% control over the record and everyone involved in the project agreed he should do it the way he wanted. The result is pure T Model, with some newer young musician-friends playing along with him.

Nathaniel Mayer (1944-2008) was one of the all-time great soul singers.
His 1962 record "Village of Love" made him a star, and he inspired
several generations of musicians, especially in his hometown of
Detroit. Nathaniel’s last sessions took place during two long summer
days and nights of intense jamming, writing, and recording. "Why Don’t You Give It To Me?"
was the first installment of these recordings to be unleashed. Now,
here at last, is a second volume of Nathaniel Mayer having a blast with
the assistance of members of the Black Keys, SSM, Outrageous Cherry,
and the Dirtbombs. The two acoustic performances are from a 2007 radio
interview, Nathaniel’s only known "unplugged" performance. About the
title: It has to do with the food he kept being served while on tour in
Europe. When Nate finally became frustrated with the countless plates
of cheese and French bread that awaited him backstage at every gig, he
shouted "Why Won’t You Let Me Be Black?". He agreed that it sounded
like a good title for his next album. — Matthew Smith

BRIAN OLIVE self-titled debut is now available as
an exclusive advance download from Other Music

The LP version is now available as a GREEN VINYL - Ltd. Edition

This talented musician has served time in the Greenhornes and the Soledad Brothers, two underrated garage rock bands from Cincinnati, Ohio. Brian Olive's self-titled solo album is a pretty impressive self-produced affair that takes the trashy, rollicking, Brit invasion revivalist sound of his former groups and then injects a healthy dose of bluesy soul backbeats and N'awlins horns to the mix. There's also a nice haze of gentle acid-washed psychedelia to his production that reminds me of some fellow '60s revivalists across the pond, the (Band of) Bees. Tracks like "Echoing Light," "See Me Mariona" and "There Is Love" are great stoner, psych-pop nuggets while "Calling All Around" and "Ida Red" are letter perfect Beggars Banquet-styled blues rock, reminiscent of Olive's former bands. But it's songs like "Stealin" and "Jubilee Line" that seal the deal, impressive rollicking jaunts that benefit from his impressive horn arrangements and a propulsive foot stomping backbeat. A great, solid listen from start to finish, if you've been diggin' on the sounds of King Khan, Brian Jonestown Massacre or the aforementioned Bees, you'll definitely want to spend some time with this record.
