Techno Music legend Carl Craig has been named Creative Director for Movement 2010.  Paxahau made the announcement today as they prepare for the start of Movement 2009 which is set to begin on Saturday, May 23 at noon.

“Movement is already a great festival and a successful brand,” said Craig, “it is an honor to be involved
with Movement in this new capacity.  I look forward to working with the team from Paxahau to take the
artistic vision for the festival to a new level.”

In his new role Craig will be involved in various creative aspects of Movement including artist bookings
and the festival’s brand image.  He will also serve as an ambassador for the Movement festival as he
travels the globe performing for throngs of electronic music enthusiasts.

“Detroit is such a wonderful music town,” Craig continued.  “With Movement we have such a great
opportunity to remind people from around the world and those that are right here in our own backyard
that electronic music in Detroit is very powerful and that our annual festival is the best stage for
showcasing the most talented artists of this musical genre.”

The annual Memorial Day Weekend festival has gone through several reincarnations since its beginning in
2000.  Paxahau earned the right in 2006 to produce the festival.   Since then they have been credited
with bringing financial stability to the once fledgling festival and developing a festival atmosphere that
appeals to fans because of the high standard of production quality they demand and their ability to book
major local and international artists year after year.

Paxahau representatives were elated when Craig agreed to become creative director and believe his
involvement will strengthen the future of the Movement festival in Detroit.

“We were extremely excited when Carl agreed to come on board as our new creative director,” said Jason
Huvaere, president of Paxahau.  “He has a complete understanding of the history of Techno Music in Detroit.
He understands its impact around the world because he lives it every day.

“Carl is a musical visionary whose ambassadorship is unparalleled.  He will be able to capture the desires
electronic music fans have for Movement and help us to incorporate them into future festivals.”

Derek Kuschel, a 27 year old Ferndale  resident, will be responsible for designing the theme for Movement 2009: Detroit's Electronic  Music Festival. He beat out 134 other contestants to become the winner of the  design competition that was presented by Paxahau Event Productions and 323  East.

"We really liked the symbolism he used in his design, but what impressed  us most was his technical skills and proven track record of project  management," said Jason Huvaere, president of Paxahau. "Just because  you can create doesn't mean you can execute a project of this magnitude and during  the interview process he showed us he is capable of doing both."

"I was very excited to learn that I was chosen as the theme designer for  this year's electronic music festival," said Kuschel (pictured right). derek_kuschel"It  is a great opportunity to be able to put my mark on Movement 09. Winning this  contest gives me a chance to display my artistic abilities for an audience from  around the World."

His winning design depicts rotating gears from a vehicle transmission that push  out the letters "MVNT" to represented the name of the  festival-Movement. Along the bottom of the design the Detroit  skyline and the words "Movement '09 Detroit's  Electronic Music Festival" are in distressed grayish-white colored  letters. The design also includes a white Paxahau logo.

Huvaere said the overall direction of the design will remain the same, but  there will be some changes made before it is used for t-shirts, banners,  fliers, advertisements and the official Movement Web site. All work as it  relates to the design will be done by Kuschel.

Derek Kuschel - Theme Designer Entry

He will work closely with representatives from Paxahau to incorporate his final  design into every aspect of the Movement 2009 brand. For his efforts, Kuschel  receives the title of Festival Theme Designer; $5,000 and a VIP chalet at the  event.

Kuschel works in the interactive department at Ringside Creative in Oak Park. He has been  there for 14-months. Prior to joining Ringside Creative he worked at  Campbell-Ewald in Warren  where he did design work for a client list that included Chevrolet, General  Motors, U.S. Navy and Alltel Wireless. He also held positions with Doner and a  couple of small internet start-up companies.

Kuschel's design was among the top 10 finalists that received the most votes by  the end of the six week contest. A combined total of 12,000 votes were cast and  more than 35,000 different people visited the contests website between the  start of the contest on Jan. 5 and its end on Feb. 17.
