New to PRIZE COUNTRY? Here it is, a quick run down of what we do and why we do it. Consider it a "Cliff Notes".

Jacob moved to Portland OR to start a band with Aaron. We changed drummers and picked up Josh. We had to do one more member change and came out with Jon. We all love each other, and irritate the living hell out of one another. We play music because we have to. Its inside of us. We make music we want, and its pretty awesome.

We have released the following releases:

"Dead Kingdom" CDEP - 2006(self released)
"Lottery Of Recognition" CD - 2007(Exigent Records)
"1988" split 7" with SIRHAN SIRHAN - 2008(Anodyne Records)
"Clutches" split 10" with LOOM - 2008(Exigent Records)
"Pissdrinkers" split 7" with HOSTILE COMBOVER - 2009(Failed Scene Records)
"Lottery Of Recognition" 12" - 2009(Failed Scene Records)
"...with love" CD & 12" - 2009(Hex Records)

We release records with good people who care about music!!!

We spend a LOT of time on the road. We booked this shit ourselves with the help of a TON of friends and bands. THANK YOU ALL!!! PRIZE COUNTRY is proof that if you just get out there and do it, you can look back and say "HOLY SHIT! I did some epic shit with my life!"

Please come see our concerts...

Alright friends - haven't checked in with you all in a while.  Here's what's going down:

We are releasing a split single with our good buddies Traindodge (OKC) that will undoubtedly smooth out your wrinkles.  One song each - new recordings from each band.  More to come on who will actually be putting that out - if we don't do it ourselves.  It turns out we will be putting it out ourselves and it will be available on merch benches and booths at live shows.

We are heading into the studio this week to start tracking our next full length titled "...with love".  The artwork is being taken care of by a really solid cat out in NY called Mike Wohlberg. You might google that name and wrap your mind around some pretty fun arts.  HEX Records is the label that's been kind enough to release the new record.  Ryan at HEX is a total gentleman and we want to hug him repeatedly.

We are touring with the doom savy Kingdom of Magic this spring (April 16th - May 3rd) and that jaunt takes us around the western states.  Go ahead and take a look at the dates we have up on our site and get in touch with us if you have friends we should take care packages to for you or if you know of someone willing to bathe 7 strange and stinky men in each coinciding location.  We can't wait to get back out there with some new material and a more current will to rock your bottom.

That's all I have at this point.  Thanks for your time.

We are all geared up and ready to hit the road in October. We are very excited to do this tour because we have been making some great friends in the last couple of months and it will be nice to hang with them. Plus, we need a good excuse to go visit as many friends as we can before the rain starts hitting us all day, every day. Please come visit us and give us hugs and hi-fives.

We are getting some bitchin new shirts printed up for the tour, and if I say so myself they look pretty damn good! Along with new shirts, we are hoping to have "Lottery Of Recognition" out on vinyl by then. If it doesn't make it, you will just have to wait. We have moved on to the second press of "Lottery Of Recognition" CD, which has all new artwork. We also have copies of the limited(500 pcs) 10" split vinyl/CD with LOOM entitled "Clutches" and the limited(500 pcs) 7" with SIRHAN SIRHAN. Come grab a few before they sell out.

Also, I have added a couple new photo albums in the pics section of our myspace. You can all go look at how ugly we all are, laugh at our mugs, and tell us how silly we all look.
(Thanks Shannon and Lara)

PRIZE COUNTRY will be headed into the studio this year! We have 9 new songs, that make me VERY proud to be a part of this band. The writing has taken on a mind of its on. We are more fluid and honest in the sounds that we create now more than ever. Get ready for blistering rock awesomeness!

I booked studio time for the first week of Dec with our good friend Adam Pike(THE MEDIAM, PAINT BY NUMBER, RED FANG, DIESTO, etc. and he just finished recording the newest BLACK ELK full length). Two of the new songs will be recorded during this session. We may be dropping one song on a split with GIT SOME, one WILL(worked that out today) be on a split with HOSTILE COMBOVER. I will be hitting up labels soon for interest(hint hint). haha Shameless begging is not really that becoming is it?

We plan on going into the studio with Kris Crummet early of 2009 to record yet another PRIZE COUNTRY record. This will probably be a 7+ song limited vinyl/CD EP. However, who know how the winds will blow. It could end up being a full length something or other to do something or other with. Regardless, these songs will be recorded in early 09, and should be out by spring. Look for more details to come.

More touring......If we make it through this next one without killing each other, or getting arrested for something stupid, we are planning a west coast tour for late Feb/early Mar There has been talk about going out with GIT SOME for some or all of this. Just wrap your head around how awesome that would be!!! If it doesn't work out though, we will still be hitting the rails ourselves, or with someone else.

Thanks for your support, love, hugs, drugs, beers, floors to sleep on, lips to kiss, and friendship!!! We love you all!

Jacob, and the P.C. boys.

Prize Country, Sirhan Sirhan, Bullet Club
(Funhouse) Nostalgia isn't a healthy habit, but neither is turning one's back on the past. The '90s certainly had its share of cultural embarrassments, but a certain brand of underground guitar rock from that decade remains pretty crucial. One only needs to look at the Amphetamine Reptile and Touch and Go rosters from that decade for affirmation of the lasting relevance of that era's trademark ugly guitar noise. Prize Country apparently share that sentiment. They manage to channel the same driving gutter sounds that made bands like the Jesus Lizard, Hammerhead, and Drive Like Jehu institutions, while tourmates Sirhan Sirhan tread a similar line but opt for a campier brand of nihilism. Lottery of Recognition - 8/10
Exigent Records

"The four dudes known as Prize Country know exactly what it takes to make a good rock'n'roll album. By drawing from influences that run the gamut of rock's various subgenres, Prize Country has found that perfect balance between attitude, energy, enthusiasm, and plain ol' good times and dumped it all into the 11 track basket of goodies they call Lottery of Recognition.  No clear distinction is drawn or needed between said subgenres, as Prize Country dives in and out of hardcore, post-punk, and indie rock withouth a care in the world.  Guitarists Jake Depolitte and Aaron Blanchard dance around each other rather than doubling the same chords, creating an organic and layered effect.  Allowing the guitars to wander so shamelessly is the rock solid rhythm section made up of Jon Hausler's overdriven bass and drummer Josh Northcutt.  At a higher decidel level, the noise created by this foursome could posssibley be considered metal of some form or another, although it's a safe bet that fans like things just as they are.  The semi-harsh, semi-spoken vocals of Blanchard and Depolitte somehow give off a dual vibe of "let's grab a beer" and "go fuck yourself" at the same time.  This is the exact attitiude that makes Lottery of Recognition work so well.  It fucking rocks and knows it."  - Ryan Ogle

Clutches = Bear vs. Shark + (Kick the Dog + Anima Nera)
Loom and Prize Country pair up for this split EP from Exigent. Like kissing cousins at a family reunion, Loom is the agonized genius hanging out in the back room gnawing on beakers and discovering the secrets of the universe while Prize Country is the Pabst-guzzling uncle with a two-foot beard and a long and lively prison record. The pairing works—all that is heavy, technical, scintillating and scalpel-y about Loom complements PC's heavy, bold, risk-taking riffs. Both have an edge of cutting, fascinating intensity while retaining their own personality. Loom is becoming one of my favorite local acts, with lyrics that cut like glass shards and impossible, soaring electric violin riffs. PC has always had a special place in my heart. Even if I'm still having Jake abandonment issues. –Rebecca Vernon

Prize Country
"Lottery of Recognition"
Style (rock)
I like a CD that lives up to their bio statement – ’absolute intensity’. Hit play and this CD pops a wheelie and doesn’t look back to see if you’re still hanging onto the sissy bar. The musical arrangement doesn’t follow the normal rock & roll straight writing style but instead coagulates punk infused tangents with primal raw energy creating a unique style worthy of blasting through the speakers. The sound reminds me a little bit of Fu Manchu’s latest CD. I totally dig the bass string ripping in the song "Into The Depths". For so many bands the bass is a percussion accompaniment but not for Prize Country. Musically there’s lots of character and depth in this CD that will take a few more spins in the player to unlock.

Prize Country - Lottery of Recognition
Prize Country originally caught my attention when I noticed that they would be joining Sirhan Sirhan on their upcoming tour which I think starts around April 3rd. I am hoping to make it out to their stop here in KC at the Record Bar on the 28th of the same month. It should be pretty great, even more so now after hearing Prize Country’s full-length album Lottery of Recognition just out this past year on Exigent Records. It is a hefty dosage of crunching guitars that I believe should appeal to quite a few out there that are into mid nineties post-hardcore. It definitely encompasses the same frenetic style of play that many of those bands from that period shared. Plenty of twisted guitar riffs nicely intertwined with heavy bass lines, which I’m always a big fan of. The nice thing about Prize Country though is they don’t get overly complicated, they are a band that is still definitely all about the big riff. Anymore that’s almost refreshing to hear. Apparently the band is from Portland, Oregon however there are a few songs on the album that definitely show a hint of Midwestern rock influence to them. Lottery of Recognition is an album that hits hard, which should hopefully translate well if I do make it out to that show. Anyway, definitely check out the tunes below.

For some more tunes and to purchase their album Lottery of Recognition, head over to their MySpace. Also be on the lookout for an upcoming split 7’’ with Loom and another split 7’’ with tour mates Sirhan Sirhan. Enjoy!

Prize Country
Lottery of Recognition
(Exigent)
by Nicholas Hubbard
01.06.08

I put on Lottery of Recognition and I jump around, because I haven’t done that in a long time. Then I sit down in my leather armchair. Between one angst-ridden frenzy of a song and the next, I think of lying on my floor when I was 17 and screaming in my head. Music like this will always recall small towns for me; small towns for me are the places that make people bottle up so much of their discontent that it can only come out by banging, banging, banging on drums and playing guitars so hard that fingers, wrists, and elbows ache (I wrote this before I listened closely to the lyrics of "Time in Reno," which--no lie--include "this town" and "discontent").

In the world of irate, cynical thrashing, Prize Country does not stand out in any dramatic way. The two keys to a great album are consistency and variety. The Portland quartet definitely has the first, but not the crucial second. The guitar work by Jacob Depolitte, Aaron Blanchard, and Jon Hausler on Lottery is the obvious highlight. It’s not unique among the history of Sabbath descendants (read: Adam Jones, Eric Avery, and Josh Homme), but it’s something riveting and inventive to keep you from nodding yourself into oblivion with the proficient and hypnotic drumming of Josh Northcutt (which is necessary, of course, to carry the music through).

The pinnacle of the album, something impressive and demanding listening several times through, is "New One," which features a short digression about 2 ½ minutes in that’s worthy of Jane’s Addiction at their best.

"For those who want their dosage of hard-driving musical intensity to come with a strong sense of technical skill and innovation, consider Prize Country, a group that delivers the goods on multiple fronts. To borrow from Faulkner, the Portland-based band brings both the sound and the fury. Their latest is 11 tracks worth of guitar-driven assault which highlights the work of guitarists Aaron Blanchard and Jake Depolitte. Their insistent playing is well complemented by the cohesion of bass and drums in the group's rhythm section. The album's best songs are those on which Prize Country give themselves the space to explore different textures and shades of the same color ("Lottery" and "Buy In" are stellar examples). The band also understands how to frame their lyrics with the appropriate emotional release; on another album highlight, "Time in Reno", instruments are calmed while the words "It's my moment of clarity" are clearly articulated over the faint but firm notes of a single guitar. With the attitude of punk, the riffing of, in some cases metal, some melodic hard rock and a world of passion infusing each note, Lottery of Recognition establishes Prize Country as a genuine force." - by Aarik Danielsen
