While flying American Airlines on our way back from LA this past March- we discovered something peculiar. On Our Own (BAD BLOOD EP) had been picked by Paste Magazine to join the ranks alongside MGMT, Bon Iver, Band of Horses, M.I.A. and many others for their in-flight mix. Not too shabby. We were very tempted to pull a "That Thing You Do" move and make them pump it through the mains. Maybe next time.

Album: Bad Blood EP There aren't many bands that have the ability to make songs you instantly repeat after only one listen. In their debut EP Ultra Sonic Edukators are letting us all know they're one of those bands. Expansive sonic landscaping characterizes much of Bad Blood with instruments taking center stage for over half the play time of some songs…

Top live show Ultra Sonic Edukators
Chicago's Ultra Sonic Edukators are fond of grandiose arrangements, with blasting power chords running neck and neck with slightly distorted vocals and all sorts of ghostly keyboard and flanging effects. To their credit, it's not as busy as it may look on paper—they know how to keep all the doodads under control and exercise self-restraint. As a matter of fact, their latest release is an EP (Bad Blood, on YMA), which is interesting considering they obviously have a lot more material up their sleeves.
Although the guitars have their say, Aaron "Doc" Stampfl's keyboards continue to drone and scream even when there's nothing else happening. On the title track, the electronics dart in and out of this otherwise Badfinger-sounding beat ballad. Still, USE resists the temptation to hearken back to 1980s synth-pop: The group delivers the word while remembering it's supposed to be a rock band. It just let the guy at the keyboards have a lot more leeway than usual.
While the band has been described as having elements of psychedelia, we consider it more of a down-to-earth Electric Light Orchestra, if it had the same power-pop feel of ELO's predecessors the Move. USE maintains the basic Beatlesque feel while experimenting all over the place (and toning down the prog pretensions), so with its monthlong residency at Schubas, it should be interesting to see where the group takes it from here.

We love Blur. And Super Furry Animals. And Happy Mondays, Pulp, and Supergrass. So it's not surprising that we enjoy Chicago-by-way-of-the-'burbs outfit Ultra Sonic Edukators. The group's writing style is firmly rooted in the mid-'90s British explosion; some fault them for that, but we are of the opinion that the world would be better off if more bands took their cues from that point in time.
The group has just released the digital only Bad Blood EP, containing one of our favorite tracks "Eyeliner Novocaine." The song's underpinning is a jouncy piano line slashed here and there by cascading sheets of guitar, with vocals delivered in a disaffected and winningly lackadaisical sneer. The whole package pretty neatly encapsulated what the band's whole sound is about, as it crescendos into pure in-the-red territory before abruptly petering out. The timing is perfect yet leaves the listener thirsting for more.
While the band's recorded output is taut and well arranged, their live show is the complete opposite, more Happy Mondays than Oasis. Limbs shake and move, painfully arrhythmic dance moves abound, and the whole thing would be such a visual mess if the boys on stage weren't obviously having the time of their lives. Give in to their infectious enthusiasm and you just might find yourself losing your inhibitions and joining in the fun.

Ultra Sonic Edukators
Recalling classic British psych-rock with modern pop production, the Ultra Sonic Edukators just destroy on their latest release: Bad Blood EP ($1.51). It's thrilling to hear something like Atomic Bombit come out in 2007 -- eight minutes long, and that guitar solo! And when you thought it couldn't get any better, enter saxophone.
Last year they supported the Flaming Lips and Kings of Leon in Wisconsin; I'd love to see them on a bill with the Dandy Warhols. This is honest, talented, and radio-friendly rock -- and to top it all off, Bad Blood was produced in part by John McEntire (responsible for our recently-blogged, Bumps).
Rolling Stone just named them one of the top 25 bands on MySpace, which was of course a huge pool to choose from and a great honor to the band. Tomorrow they could be on the cover! Don't miss this EP. - amiest.com
