This is from a section from DIY: The Rise of Lo-Fi Culture by Amy Spencer
Part III: The Rise of Lo-Fi Music - Riot Grrrl
Although originating in Olympia, riot grrrl quickly spread throughout America and then all over the world. In London it beceame particularly prevalent in 1993, when Huggy Bear fast became one of the most influential lo-fi bands of the time (though they never really broke from their intense cult following). With their dramatically uncompromising appproach (Huggy Bear famously told Nude records they'd only ever join the label if it dropped Suede), they burst out of the London fanzine scene, ignited a music press debate and disappeared. Reluctant to be associated with the 'fashion' that riot grrrl became for many, Huggy Bear nevertheless poineered its feminist ideals, though never to the exclusion of male band members. In an interview first featured in Libeller's Almanac, band member Chris declared: 'I am a Riot Boy... People would say, "Are you a Riot Grrrl?" and they expect you to say Riot Grrrl's finished. But, it's like it's only a phrase and the things it stands for are the coolest things ever, and if I'm associated with that in a productive way then, yeah, I'm a Riot Grrrl'.

Here is a quote from Niki out of the book by Amy Spencer, DIY: The Rise of Lo-fi Culture, an interview with Fabian Ironside for Libeller's Almanac:
"I don't want to change the fucking world, it's too fucked up anyway. One band is not going to do that. That's what I mean, this British culture doesn't teach you to investigate... I don't give a shit if they hate our music, but kids starting to get investigative again, curious about their own culture....Britain is, like, so rich of people doing stuff but just we're not aware of it, and that's why the 'NME' and 'Melody Maker' fucks up."
