come join us as we dance on the tattered remains of a once great festival. last chance to see hopewell for a bit...

lyndon's off to tour the UK with his other band for a month and jason's off to play All Tomorrow's Parties (the original english one) w/ a reformed Harmony Rockets (more on that soon).

we'll be back hard at work on a new album around the holidays (think 'another green world')... there's talk of a covers record and a proper release of our peel sessions as well. stay tuned.

We are happy to announce that the video for "Island" exists and is ready for your eyes. The band's good friend Art Boonparn (who's done videos for The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Coldcave & The Silent League) managed to pretty accurately represent the spirit of the song by shooting hand held super 8 scenes in and around Brooklyn and mixing them together with archival war footage and found sound. The whole thing feels more like a short film in 3 parts (a la Kurosawa) than a rock vid. enjoy...

if the vimeo doesn't work... there's also a copy on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gpC52hMPcE

hi all,
check out our daytrotter session. we like it. sounds like good analog tape. all recorded live in a room... and sean writes a cool piece of prose to go along with the songs entitled "fires of the hills and elusive bodies". rad.

the flaming lips were kind enough to add us to their day @ this year's all tomorrow's parties. we're gonna make it special and add a 3 piece female choir and avant-saxophonist mark marinoff to our ranks that day (marinoff who played on our 2005 hopewell & the birds of appetite and mercury rev's see you on the other side).

there's still some tickets left I believe if you feel like spending the day in the country. the line-up is pretty ridiculous. here's the full details

http://www.atpfestival.com/Events/ATPNewYork2009/LineUp.php

my personal highlights for the weekend....
dirty 3 - performing one of my fav recs of all time
shellac - apparently albini runs a game room for the artists
anti-pop consortium - my old co-worker beans!
akron/family - the weirder the better
animal collective - ditto
sleepy sun - blew me away a sxsw this year
flaming lips - this one's a given

for all you new yorkers who can't come up, we're doing an ATP warm up show @ cameo gallery in williamsburg (fun little place nestled behind the lovin' cup cafe on north 6th). special unannounced cool bands to play with us, oh and fuck it, we'll get some good DJ's too.

let's move to the country.

despite not having a tour booked over there for the foreseeable future, the uk seems to like us again...

here's some of the more notable reviews of good good desperation. ta.

"Seduced by the sound of peaceful harmonies and "oohs" and "aahs", 'Good Good Desperation' begins, leading us to the heavy psych rock spectacular that's hiding in the forest. One song bleeds into another, switching mood and tempo, raising the bar each time as our ears are tested with one musical incarnation after another, from quieter acoustic numbers to full-on shoegazer. No surprises then that they supported My Bloody Valentine on their recent tour. This album is a treat."
- Artrocker

"Underpinning the gliding melodies and upswinging choruses is a sense of instrumentation that is a delight to behold. Hopewell make music that is powerfully rhythmic and heavily layered, as as such they sound like very few bands around. With an eye on the bigger picture and an ear for the finer details, this is a group that are as accomplished as they are unusual."
- Kerrang

"Hopewell's fifth album combines the tribal thunder of two drummers with joyful vocals. Like a heavier duty Flaming Lips or a wilder and woollier Can, Hopewell take joy in experimentation but never stray far from the path of a good tune."
- Bizarre

"Good Good Desperation is a highly accomplished collection of loosely constructed individual pieces that should gain its creators long overdue recognition on this side of the pond."

-Drowned in Sound

"Had fleet foxes grown up on 90s indie rock, Touch and Go records and the Flaming Lips, instead of Brian Wilson and The Byrds, then may well have ended up sounding like American psyche-rockers Hopewell. The lushly layered and deeply harmonised vocals that lace 'Preamble (pt II)' - the opening of the band's fifth album is a perfect example of this."
- RockSound

"An encyclopedic array of influences is apparent here, from Stravinsky to Debussy, Pink Floyd to Roxy Music. From the soothing vocals of the opening track right through to the sitar-tinged and maniacal 'Bury Me Standing', Good Good Desperation is a full blooded record that offers more surprises than you could image."

our label just launched a new webstore (powered by the nice people at insound) and they are having a sale for 2 weeks. all CDs are $6.99 and all LPs are $9.99.

that means you can get the hopewell record for 10 bucks. I'd do it. I'm guessing there aren't too many of the colored vinyl left either.

here's a link to the hopewell page:
http://teepee.hasawebstore.com/artist/24328

since you are doing an order already, this is what else you should buy from tee pee:

entrance "prayer of death" - I know, judging by the title it sounds all doom and gloom, but trust me this is one of the best records tee pee has put out. classic psyche rock with a slight eastern influence and frenetic hendrix-style guitar. actually don't trust me, trust thurston moore @ ecstatic peace! he's putting out their next record.
http://teepee.hasawebstore.com/artist/25598

spindrift "the ledgend of god's gun" - these dudes made a crazy movie and this is the soundtrack. think ennio morricone meets johnny cash. true grit. a modern classic.
http://teepee.hasawebstore.com/artist/37965

the warlocks "heavy deavy skull lover" - haven't listened to the new one much, but this last one is really moody and hazy. thick 12-string with long jams and whispered vox. pretty rad if you are in the right mood.
http://teepee.hasawebstore.com/artist/27691

YaHoWa 13 "Penetration, An Aquarian Symphony" - LA cult founded in 1969 and led by an ex-marine named father yod. they lived in the hollywood hills and had their own vegan restuarant (featured in the woody allen movie "annie hall"). this is one of the records put out by their band, yahowa 13. on a side note RIP sky saxon who just died in austin. he founded the psyche rock band the seeds and was a member of yahowa 13.

there's a bunch of other good stuff up there too.

jason is off to the UK to play truck festival. he's doing a solo set + backing damo suzuki of CAN fame. he'll be one of damo's "sound carriers" as they explore the inner workings of improvization with 7,000 onlookers. hopewell's all really psyched for him being huge fans of CAN and damo's solo work. tago mago, ege bamyasi these albums are classics!

"The goal is simple, for musicians to communicate with each other and with the audience. There are no ego's involved. Musicians send smoke signals to each other. They respond in kind. Damo selects musicians who have the potential to communicate freely and who are able to respond honestly to each other in the here and now. This also involves a respect for and dynamic communication with the audience. Both Damo and Can refer to this process as Instant Composing. Each concert is a unique event. "

kept myself occupied filming a bunch of the bands we played with on our last tour thanks to the purchase of a used flip camera 2 days before we left. what follows is a pretty random, low-fi smattering. different styles and locations. chronological order. I can't really hold the camera still, but some of these nights were truly awesome. made a lot of new friends and collected their recs.

part one (the east)
here's the playlists...

that's it. all these bands have myspaces, you should go check them out and buy their records. sorry to the bands I missed (especially voyager one in seattle). I counted, we played with over 50 support bands this tour! just too many to film... at times I couldn't find my camera or was changing strings or arguing with promoters. you know how it is.

thank you to everyone who gave us a place to stay, fed us and helped us out. my non-show highlights include exploring the (rainy) smokey mountains in north carolina (thank you jonas from the hellsayers for taking us up there), matt hollywood cooking me a much needed cheeseburger in portland, exploring around the griffith park observatory in LA before our spaceland show, meeting matt gentling, bassist for archers of loaf (one of my favs) at our show in asheville.. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.

love,
lyndon + hopewell
