A.M. Vibe - CapricornoMay 12, 2009 by Jen Stratosphere Fanzine Category: Albums (and EPs)
A.M. Vibe - Capricorno A.M. Vibe is a trio out of San Diego, California consisting of vocalist and guitarist Lisah Nicholson, bassist Michael Porter, and drummer Mark Vernon. Lisah was formerly in the band Red Dye No. 5 and the band, on the move since 2000, was previously on Silvergirl Records, which released their debut album, but is now on Planting Seeds Records, which released this sophomore album. The band members play 1990s-inspired, indie-rock tunes with an alt-country timbre on certain songs. Lisah’s vocals sound like a cross between the winsome sweetness of Juliana Hatfield and the directness of Kim Deal of The Pixies. ”Superstar” opens the album with Lisah sing-talking in a velvety hush against the bass and crisp, mid-tempo beat, as the guitar line follows the melody of “Sweet Jane” until the song picks up on the chorus with sparkling rings of guitar and shimmering cymbal crashes that open up the sound. This ‘verse, chorus, verse’ song takes the requisite guitar solo break, which deepens the tone, along with wistful pulls of violin, as Lisah pushes her vocals out by the end, declaring spiritedly “Something way up high / keeps the dream alive.” A constant strum of bass guitar imbues “Open Road” with a sense of restless energy, as the drum beat moves at a trot, increasing on the chorus sections, along with kicky cymbal crashes, alt-country guitar licks, and a backdrop of dreamy, breathy vocals as Lisah sings straightforwardly “Heaven only knows / where this single road will go.” The guitar twang is suddenly dispelled by the arrival of buzzing, low-register guitars and violin strings near the end of the song. A low bass line, short tambourine shake, and harp strum mix with each other on “V” amid languid guitar notes and Lisah sing-talking in short phrases, where her vocal lines follow closely on the heels of one another on the verses. Then another guitar comes in with male backing vocals, light hand claps, and a slow-burning guitar solo on the chorus, as Lisah, sounding like a cross between Juliana Hatfield and Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays, exclaims plaintively “You should go away, / you don’t really have to stay.” ”Don’t Wanna Stay” is a mid-tempo, down-on-yer-luck song with darker, spooling guitar distortion, male vocal accents, and a weary grit to Lisah’s usually sweet voice, as she achingly explains that she doesn’t want to “…stay here for too long. / Feels like I’m waiting for something.”, but what could come off as a bare-bones, defeatist attitude is defiantly given life by the grimy guitar feedback, kinetic beat, and cymbal crash. Lisah is all too-cool-for-you sugar ‘n’ spice on “BMF”, the highlight of the album, a rock song that pushes into Jesus And Mary Chain territory with its heavy, slow, incessant crush of fuzzed-out, distorted guitar and propulsive bass line, with Lisah’s vocals sounding a bit far off, but still sharp, and shadowed by shouty vocals reminiscent of Polly Jean Harvey as she sing-talks “I’ll take you way up high, / show you diamonds in my sky.” ”Black Dogs”, which features an alt-country sound in its flecks of finger-picked guitars and clear-eyed, sing-talking vocals, brightens with the addition of light, chiming guitar, hand claps, and hit cymbal. At least two guitars tangle with each other as male vocals mirror Lisah while she reflects upon the good times of a relationship, passionately coaxing out the lines “Sweetest inspirations, / how you gave me hope, / all the love and adoration…” Official Site: http://www.amvibe.com/ Planting Seeds Records: http://www.plantingseedsrecords.com/

California’s A.M. VIBE shivers in the embrace of a dual love. On the one hand, bandleader LISAH NICHOLSON and her crew float and jangle with the best of bands like the SUNDAYS. On the other hand, they fry amps and daintily scorch the landscape like SLOWDIVE
at its shoegaziest. I’ll admit I prefer the latter approach – “Don’t
Wanna Stay” and “Hold On” sit well with the work of their dreampop
idols. Even the more twee songs work, though, as Nicholson avoids the
sing-song vocal style of her forebears for more straightforward
readings of tunes like “Countdown” and “V.” The pretty folk rock of
“Black Dogs” and the gorgeous balladry of “The Sea Song” vary the tone
somewhat, though they’re certainly in keeping with the rest of the
record. The strength of Nicholson’s songs makes any stylistic dithering
irrelevant in any case. A lovely record. http://www.amvibe.com

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/around_town/nightlife/Listen-Locally--Simplify-the-Chaos.html A.M. Vibe out of Solana Beach,
you may have heard them even if you haven’t heard of this enchanting
trio. Highlights of A.M. Vibe’s 7 year musical career include placement
on primetime programming, local television and on the big screen. They
performed at Superbowl XXVII, and are no strangers to the San Diego Music Awards, receiving several nominations and awards.
Lisah, Porter and Mark compose the group, fronted by a female
guitarist/ vocalist with Porter on bass and Mark on drums. Their sound
is a sought-after one, Lisah produces dreamy, girlish vocals that delve
into throaty pop-rock. Twinkling keys that could calm you into REM,
give way to swarthy rock interludes. It’s a nice package, simple yet
thoughtfully stirring. Lisah nails the dewy-eyed ingénue meets groggy,
Xanax-induced rocker chick voice. It’s that ‘je ne sais quoi’ that just
accomplishes what so many cannot. A.M. Vibe released their second
record, Carpicorno (Planting Seeds Records) at the end of March.

this is lisah i had to put my dog down yesterday. it was so sad and i feel broken. she has been a part of my life for 16 years and to wake up today and not see her is just horrible. every time i had a bad day or a good day, she always gave me smiles and love and hugs. and when she had a bad day or a good day, she got lots of love and hugs and comfort. just two nights ago, we had a woofing conversation. she is my best. she inspired a lot of songs. and now she will give me more. i love you Pistol, you have been the best friend i ever had. i miss you terribly already its not even 24 hours . thank you for always giving me your best. I LOVE YOU NOW AND I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER AND EVER..... I PRAY I WILL GET TO SEE YOU AGAIN ONE DAY.

Current mood: breezy
We were recently called to task to support Spiritualized for their pre-Coachella gig here in San Diego. I use the word "task" because we knew of their reputation and were expecting to be treated like "proper rubbish"….and after a brief conversation with the promoter; it appeared our fears were to be realized. But alas, this was Spiritualized and we were prepared to take a verbal flogging for one night so we could brag that we opened for them for the rest of our lives. Even trade as far as I was concened. In my mind I had visions of Porter and Lisah unleashing a wall of fuzz that would take your face clean off. Big muffs and Yard boxes being brought to their untimely deaths by Porters size thirteen's and Lisahs "dist ortion daisy chain of death"! Fuzz is something we excel at….but soon a dream is to be crushed: The first demand from the Spiritualized camp: am vibe must perform acoustic… Holy smokes! Now don't get me wrong, we have an acoustic set, but it's not mellow-at all. Second demand: am vibe must set up around Spiritualized equipment…nothing shall be moved ...not even an English bowel. Dam…this is going to hurt. Part 3: am vibe will receive $350.00, 2 cases of beer, big guest list and a meal buy out! ACE! For this we are ready to play on pogo sticks if we have too. Not really, but it still seamed well worth it to play with a kick ass band...even though they were doing their "acoustic mainlines" show we knew it would still be awesome. Gig day….we decide to keep a stiff upper lip and take what's coming. First off, the promoter lived up to his promise…we were treated first class (thank you for that) all that was promised was delivered. Second off, Spiritualized did not live up to their promise. They were super cool to us! One might even say Tops! If we had to play acoustic, we did not want to be out done (too bad) so we had enlisted the help of our friends Will from "Nerve Meter" ..boards and Serena ..o. I think we partially got the gig because we were a 3 piece and they thought we would not be much of a threat. When the band saw all of our gear… including20Amps…they didn't say a thing. When they were done with their sound check, they moved all of their gear out of the way. When we were having problems with our keyboards, Spiritualized keyboard player offer us his to use! The tormented British shoe gazing verbal beat downs were nowhere to be found. Jason Pierce ran into me in the hall way and apologized…I was a bit let down, but pleasantly surprised. All in all I would say it was a great night. Cool band, cool promoter, cool stage staff and cold beers. Bloody well brilliant! And so say all of us!
