RUDE EP

Ora bem, tudo isto começa com um telefonema do Henrique Amaro. Na verdade não estava a espera de lançar mais nada este ano, uma vez que os “Koalas Desperados” saíram há pouco “Tempu” e o meu plano era (e continua a ser) o de lançar um álbum novo em 2010. Mas as coisas são mesmo assim. Os desafios muitas vezes são inesperados e no “sim ou sopas” nunca fui de sopas e não ia passar a ser agora. Aceitei com muito gosto, agarrei no papel e caneta e comecei a traçar o plano, sabia que podia contar à partida com alguns “tropas” e iniciei os contactos.

Nesta altura já a minha cabeça fervilhava com ideias e comecei a olhar para este EP como uma boa maneira de introduzir alguns dos novos elementos no som que eu tenciono apresentar em 2010.

Ao mesmo tempo, havia um par de ideias que já tinham sido desenvolvidas mas que estavam encostadas desde o “Rude Bwoy Stand”. Falei com o Kronic e arranquei para Lisboa. O tempo não jogou muito a meu favor e só pude ficar por três dias, mas correu muito bem, em três dias conseguimos construir três boas bases no estúdio dele!

O Rude Sentido foi o primeiro, eu já andava com ele na cabeça e já tinha a letra escrita. A única coisa que não tinha pensado era na participação, mas depois de termos gravado sentimos que era preciso pôr ali alguém a dar “corpo” ao tema e o nome Tó Trips veio logo ao ar. Mostramos-lhe o tema e ele aceitou! Devo dizer que fiquei muito contente. Sempre respeitei o seu trabalho e agora ia ter a sua guitarra num som meu.

No caso do RAP fizemos a cena a “moda antiga”. Sacamos um sample para o MPC do Kronic, martelei um beat em cima do metrónomo, o Kronic cortou o sample e tínhamos a base preparada. Como o sample era pré revolução, mais precisamente do ano em que eu nasci, lembrei-me de escrever sobre os anos que passei no bairro em que cresci no Porto. O Kronic encarregou-se de dar os toques finais e passámos à frente.

Surgiu o Dub, basicamente o Kronic ligou uma guitarra e eu liguei o teclado, pusemos uns pratos a marcar o tempo e gravamos directo para o computador.
No dia a seguir foi altura de desafiar o João Gomes que já estava de sobreaviso passou por lá e levou o Dub com ele.

Regressei ao Porto, a musica que me paga as contas toca-se de outra maneira e o trabalho chamava por mim. Passei uns dias fora de casa a trabalhar e quando voltei, fui ter com o Lino a Leça e começamos a ver o Rude Time juntamente com o Rude Love. No primeiro caso as vozes já tinham sido gravadas e só faltava mesmo era decidir o fecho do tema, regravar alguns sons como por exemplo o teclado principal e o break da entrada. No love, já tínhamos feito um instrumental mais curto e mais pumped para usar nos live acts na altura em que saiu o Forever Love, mas na verdade, eu nunca cheguei a gravar sobre esse instrumental. O Lino ficou a dar-lhe um refresh e meteu-lhe um baixo novo, enquanto isso, o Kronic subia ao Porto com o trabalho feito em Lisboa. As waves do Gomes não podiam ser mais Cool e assentaram como uma luva no Dub. Mais uma vez, estava tudo a correr bem, mas o prazo apertava cada vez mais. Ainda tínhamos umas tardes de estúdio pela frente, precisávamos de equilibrar os sons todos, e ainda tinha de fazer a “intro” e o “outro”.
Resumindo, no penúltimo dia da última semana do mês de Maio do corrente ano, 24 horas antes de findar o prazo para entregar o Master ao Henrique, estava eu a fazer os bounces com Lino e a olhar para o relógio.
Tinha um comboio para apanhar!

Felizmente apanhei o último, com a companhia do meu side-kick Laranja que aproveitou para ir gravar umas coisas a Lisboa. Chegámos por volta das 23 horas e ainda fomos a tempo de comer qualquer coisa perto do Bairro Alto, reunir com os brothers e toca a brindar que o trabalho está feito!

No seguinte foi com satisfação que liguei ao Henrique a combinar o sítio e a hora para ser feita a entrega.
No fim, tudo correu como planeado e agora só me resta esperar que as pessoas o escutem…
...no fim de contas, é para elas que o faço.

Release of the KOALAS DESPERADOS

“The Koalas are known to be friendly and peaceful creatures. The truth is that they can be very rebellious. A new breed of urban immigrant koalas, called “KOALAS DESPERADOS”, loves next to eucalyptus especially phatt beats and breaking the rules! These Koalas go from time to time on a pilgrimage to a secret place in an urban jungle. There, they meet with other rebellious koalas to create the “Desperados Sound” and spread their spiritual message: Legalize Eucalyptus !”

Let’s face it: there’s far too many projects out there trying to unite musicians from around the globe under the world beat banner mainly for sheer marketing- or promotional reasons in the first place. „Done with good intentions“ in most cases then is indeed not quite the same as „well done“...

The KOALAS DESPERADOS dare to differ from that very theory by nature. Cologne/Germany based reggae producer TEKA and his partner in crime, MANAR (Montpellier/France), easily managed to integrate 17 musicians and 17 vocalists from 15 countries in an organic way during the production time of this album... that way giving the (pretty urban) KOALAS DESPERADOS sound enough time to grow, developing more of that common ground with time rather than just enjoying and recording the first chemical reactions of instant collaboration.

The finest beats and riddims, many voices in even more languages, global urban vibes in the mere sense of words, the KOALAS DESPERADOS are much rather an outernational „work in progress“-network than just another studio project with guests coming together for a certain purpose and then go their individual ways again.

Thilo „TEKA“ Jacks and Manar El-Abed have come a long way together, knowing each other since school days and having spent lots of time in closely related band outfits and door-to-door rehearsal rooms of the 90s Frankfurt reggae and punk scene.

While TEKA went on to become co-founder and inhouse-producer of Cologne/Germany based reggae label ROOTDOWN records, mainly taking care of his own FLASHPOINT studios, Manar decided to move to Montpellier (in the south of France) and joined the pro active scene based around the infamous hangout bar “Rebuffy” as a DJ and producer... this way managing to build an impressive amount of contacts to local musicians and MCs.

It wasn’t until 5 years later, when a common friend from „back in the days“ reunited them.They got in touch again, only to immediately start working together right on the spot. And so, the multi cultural, genre bashing musical mix comes naturally to the KOALAS masterminds... both hardly ever did anything else than working on music with talent from all over the world.

„Nobody who took part in this production only mailed a few soundfiles,“ TEKA explains, „we happened to really work and get deep in my studio with almost every KOALA face to face. We all liked this idea from the very beginning... to pull on one string at the same time with dedication, because everybody was feeling it. We all identify with the KOALAS philosophy big time... which causes quite a lot of unexpected extra dynamics.“

Every member has a lot to offer and to bring to the huge KOALAS DESPERADOS table. While D-Flame, Nosliw, Laura Lopez-Castro or Maxim are household names on the german popular music scene, other KOALAS ring quite a few bells in their home countries as well. Stand out talents like Paco Mendoza (Argentinia), Jaqee (Sweden/Uganda),
portuguese MC Bezegol, female MC Ms Maiko from Gran Canaria, Macaco and Nubla from Barcelona (Spain) or Hector Gomez a.k.a. Lhabanero (Cuba) guarantee a perfect balance between quality and quantity of musical in-
and output.

And that is also why the styles and genres that come together in the KOALAS DESPERADOS sound are as many and versatile as the cultural backgrounds clashing here. Urban sound fueled by Reggae and HipHop for sure... yet at the same time melting in Fado from Portugal, Afrobeat vibes from Burkina Faso and Kamerun and a variety of latin elements as
well.

In 2009, the times of all these styles being just something like „exotic flavours“ are definitely over: the KOALAS DESPERADOS enjoy their organic urban life in the global village... and it sure comes natural to them: Legalize Eucalyptus!
