November is SAVE THE TURKEYS Month at Animal Acres! Please join with us to help spread a message of compassion for our turkey (and other) farmed animal friends. Pitch in with farm chores to help care for rescued turkeys, and adopt (and name!) your very own turkey to raise needed funding for farmed animal rescue and refuge efforts.

Adopt (and name!) Your Very Own Turkey!
Animal Acres welcomed 12 refugees from the turkey industry! The sanctuary turkeys will be doing their part this Thanksgiving to teach people to extend compassion to ALL beings, but they need one thing to help them do their job...a name! To help us fund our Thanksgiving rescue and education efforts, the first 11 people (one is already named) who sign up to adopt a turkey through our monthly sponsorship program, have the honor of naming their very own turkey friend! You could name your turkey in memory of someone...to convince someone to go vegetarian (it's hard to eat a turkey named after you!)...as a great holiday gift...or maybe you just have a really cool turkey name you've always wanted to use! A turkey adoption is just $15 a month, and you, or your gift recipient, will receive a beautiful framed photograph of your adopted turkey and an Animal Acres membership. Call 661-269-5404 or adopt (and name!) your turkey online at: www.animalacres.org

Thankful Turkeys Celebration Saturday, November 21, Noon - 4 PM
Celebrate with fellow "veg pilgrims" and our honored feathered friends as we gather together to encourage people to feed a turkey, rather than eat a turkey. Spend an afternoon meeting the sanctuary critters and enjoy a delicious vegan Thanksgiving meal from One World Vegetarian Cuisine including the famous One World vegetarian "turkey", mashed potatoes and gravy, harvest vegetables, and delicious holiday pies from Cobblermania. The day also includes a special guest presentation by Philip Steir, author of the Vegan Sanctuary blog, and of course, the "Feeding the Turkeys" ceremony where it's the sanctuary turkeys turn to enjoy cranberry salad, pumpkin pie, and stuffed squash! Last year's holiday event sold out - please purchase your ticket(s) early. Click here to register online or call us at 661-269-5404.

Donations Needed for Nellie's Barn Thrift Store
Thrift store donations are needed to help us raise funds for our rescue, education, and advocacy efforts. Please clean out your garages and closets and give to needy farmed animals. We need clothing, kitchen ware, dishes, small appliances, knick-knacks, purses, baby and kid items, books and more. Donations may be brought to Animal Acres 7 days a week between 10 am and 3 pm. Thank YOU!

Activist of the Month Philip Steir

Philip is the author of the new vegan blog Vegansanctuary.blogspot.com and is the featured guest speaker at our Thanksgiving celebration for turkeys. NOVEMBER FARM CHORE DAY Saturday, November 14
Join us for our November FARM CHORE DAY to help us care for the sanctuary animals, trim trees, and get the housing barns ready for the winter. It takes a vegan village to run a sanctuary, and we and our farmed animal friends, are counting on YOU! Please arrive between 10-11 am - we will be completing farm chores until 2 p.m. and then breaking for vegan vittles from 2 - 3 p.m. Food is provided - please bring a light jacket and work gloves if you have them. To help us plan for lunch and chores, please RSVP to info@animalacres.org or call 661-269-5404. Thank you!

Activist of the Month Julia Stein
This month, we are honored to recognize Julia Stein for her dedication
and commitment to Animal Acres. Julia is always ready to lend a helping
hand, and when we recently asked her if she could spend a day driving
to pick up rescued turkeys, she didn't hesitate, and loaded up her car
with 12 baby turkeys! Around the sanctuary, Julia is known as the
"turkey whisperer" and she is always ready and willing to teach
sanctuary visitors that turkeys need protection, and love, too. Julia
is also one of Animal Acres most dedicated event volunteers, and we
always count on her to staff the turkey barn during event tours. Many
thanks and gobbles to Julia, from ALL of us at Animal Acres.

Animal Acres Members Randy Kasper and Glenn Lipson made their special day a special one for our farmed animal friends, too. The couple exchanged vows and blessings in our rose courtyard, surrounded by their loved ones, including the cows, pigs, chickens, and other sanctuary animals! It was a beautiful, traditional Jewish wedding ceremony, with the occasional sheep "baah" or chicken "cluck" in the background as the couple married. After the ceremony, guests mingled with the sanctuary animals, and then enjoyed a delicious vegan banquet catered by Veggie Vibes. Animal Acres is happy to host your wedding, birthday, or other event to make your special day as memorable and meaningful as it can be for you and your guests. Activist of the Month
Gry Wesenberg
This month, we are honored to recognize Gry Wesenberg for her outstanding commitment to Animal Acres. Since Animal Acres opened its doors, Gry has been traveling all the way from the east coast to help us host our special events, especially our annual Gala, which requires enormous pre-event preparation. Using vacation time and frequent flyer miles, Gry joins us for 3 to 4 days before the Gala, helping us clean and paint, stuff goody bags, and any other task needed to put on a successful Gala. Gry also lends a helping hand from her home by maintaining our Facebook site, and this year, she is also helping us compile rescue videos to educate people about the cruel conditions farmed animals endure before arriving at our sanctuary. Gry is an amazing activist from coast to coast! Thank you Gry, for caring so much, and doing so much, for our farmed animal friends.

This Month's Featured Adoption - Frankie and Sam
Hundreds of horses are being abandoned, neglected, and starved to death because of the economic and foreclosure crisis. Sam and Frankie arrived at our shelter extremely malnourished and thin, and Frankie is suffering from a severe leg infection that is requiring extensive veterinary treatments. The two horses now have a large corral and straw-filled housing barn - and all the hay they can munch! Both Sam and Frankie have put on weight, and they are no longer skiddish around people. Sam and Frankie are in need of loving adoption sponsors (cause they eat like horses!) Please help us pay for their feed and veterinary care, and keep our doors open for many more needy animals. Please click here to adopt Frankie or Sam, or both!

VEGGIE PRIDE PARADA LA A HIT!
Several hundred "veg heads" united in Venice on April 26 for LA's first
VEGGIE PRIDE PARADE! The record crowd made veg history (estimated at
850 people by the owner of Culver Events, which hosted the event). The
amazing veggie day began at noon, when participants paraded on a 5K
walk through Venice, adorned in eye-catching costumes and thought
provoking signs to educate people about the health, environmental, and
animal welfare benefits of a vegetarian diet. The parade stretched for
several city blocks, often stopping traffic as cars honked in support
(along with the occasional "Eat Beef" jeer), to which marchers
enthusiastically responded; "Your Mamma was right, eat your veggies!"
Everyone was in high spirits, carrying signs and chanting throughout
the entire parade - clearly feeling proud and happy to be a "Veg Head!"
After the parade, participants gathered to listen to rocking veg bands,
enjoy an array of veg foods, and listen to special guest speakers. Click here for the full event report.

NEW! HELP FARMED ANIMALS 24/7
Animal rescue work is often 24/7, so we need your support 24/7 too!
Please help farmed animals every day of the year by joining Animal
Acres Monthly Pledge Program. Your support will provide us the
guaranteed funding we need - when we need it most. It's a convenient
way to ensure you keep Animal Acres programs going - you can choose to
support our rescue efforts, cruelty investigations, humane education,
or general program funding needs. Especially in these difficult
economic times, we need to have guaranteed income to keep our doors
open. Please be a vital part of Animal Acres, by joining our Monthly Pledge Program today.
ADOPT (AND NAME) YOUR VERY OWN CHICKEN!
Animal Acres recently opened our doors to 15 more hens who were rescued
from the cruelty of egg factory farms. The hens have spent their entire
lives confined to battery cages, unable to walk or even stretch their
wings. The misery and pain "laying hens" endure is a living nightmare,
but now you can give them a life they once only dreamed of. Please
consider adopting (and naming!) your very own rescued hen today - the
number of animals we can shelter is always dependent on the number of
sponsors we have to provide funding for their care. Please click here
to join our Adopt-a-Farmed Animal program - and put the name of your
hen in the comments box. Thank you from ALL of us at Animal Acres.
Activist of the Month Judy Pfeifer
This month, we are honored to recognize a very special volunteer - Judy
Pfeifer, the mother of Animal Acres staff member Erin Pfeifer! Judy has
generously donated hundreds of hours to Animal Acres, typically putting
in full 8 hour days to help us complete our mailings to raise needed
funding for Animal Acres programs. During her time at Animal Acres,
Judy has fallen in love with all of the sanctuary animals, but her
favorite are our chicken friends (her house is decorated with chickens,
and Judy has a chicken named after her at Animal Acres!) We have all
been so impressed with Judy's commitment - with her care, love, and
devotion to Animal Acres, she is like a "mother" to all of us. Thank
you Judy, for caring so much, and doing so much, for our farmed animal
friends, and "Happy Mother's Day" from ALL of us at Animal Acres.
SHOP SO THE COWS CAN HAVE A HOME!
Do-Ni
just produced a beautiful new line of vegan ballerina shoes! All shoes
are handmade, vegan and eco-friendly. By selecting Animal Acres as your
charity all profits from each pair of shoes will go to help Animal
Acres vital rescue and advocacy efforts!

| .. Baby was brought to Animal Acres by a caring individual who rescued her from abandonment. The lamb was born on the range, and when the rest of the flock was moved, the lamb was left behind. Weighing just a few pounds, and only a couple days old, she would never have survived without her mother. Baby is now happy and safe at Animal Acres, where she enjoys the company of her best friends, Faith and Michelle - two other youngsters on the farm. With Mother's Day is just around the corner, what better way to thank Mom for her love and support throughout the years than the compassionate gift of a Spring baby in need! Please click here to sponsor Baby or one of our other sanctuary critters in need of loving sponsors. BAN BATTERY CAGE CRUELTY, AGAIN!Assemblymember Jared Huffman (San Rafael) has introduced Assembly Bill 1437, the California Egg- Laying Hen Welfare Act. AB 1437 requires all shelled eggs sold in California after January 1, 2015 to meet the animal care standards set forth in Prop 2. The cruelty associated with confining egg-laying hens to tiny wire cages has been deemed unacceptable by California voters. What's more, economists have estimated that it costs producers less than one penny per egg more to raise hens in "cage-free" barns. For more information about the bill, click here. AB 1437 will be heard in committee during April - please don't delay - urge your assembly member to support this important bill today. SHOP SO THE COWS CAN HAVE A HOME!..

Activist of the Month RORY FREEDMAN We, and farmed animals everywhere, could never thank Rory Freedman enough. Over the past few years, we have seen more and more people making the connection between the cruelty farmed animals endure and going vegetarian. When asked what made them switch over, the response is always the same: "I read Skinny Bitch." Skinny Bitch has become a movement, and Rory is the first to state that she had one purpose in mind when writing the book: to make the world a better place for animals. Rory's books have more than two million copies in print and are converting readers every single day. Learn more about Rory's work and her latest release, Skinny Bastard, at www.roryfreedman.com

Immediate ACTION Needed to Stop Veterinary Tax CA Governer Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to legislate a 9% tax on all veterinary services, including meds. The tax could not come at a worse time when people are already struggling financially and an additional 9% would discourage many from providing needed veterinary care to their animal companions. Please call the Governors's office and make it known that balancing the budget at the expense of animal health and well-being is not acceptable! It only takes about 10 seconds because it's all automated. Call 916-445-2841. (Press 1 for English or choose other language options.) Press 5 for the veterinary tax proposal. It will ask you to press 1 if you're calling about the veterinary tax proposal, so press 1.Then press 2 to oppose the tax. And last, PLEASE forward this message!
