So I'm back from Norway - had a great time and really enjoyed meeting some wonderful people, spending time with my uncle and working on my album.

Check out my friend Ove's Myspace page - I helped him record a full-length album while I was there and really enjoyed his musicianship and friendship.

But with all international travel there is this period of decompression after you get back. I flew home on a monday and my younger brother got married on that Saturday, and then I went up to my Grandparents' house for a week. So now I've finally recovered from my trip and am settling into life here in Lancaster. It's good stuff. =)

The album is getting a lot closer to being done, and is really sounding good! I'm currently in the mixing process, which involves a lot of time burning CDs of various versions and listening to them on different stereo systems to make sure they sound right.

I'm also really excited about playing at Purple Door! If you can make it out, I'm playing on the Gallery Stage at 10:30 am on August 16th (saturday). For directions and more info about this arts and music festival, visit Purple Door's Website.

See you there!

I am safely in Norway! I have been with my uncle Warren here in Tyssedal since last Monday, arriving by coach (bus) in the afternoon, and spent the past week or so getting used to life here and helping to organize things.

The bus trip to the west of Norway was beautiful - we drove through the eastern coastland, climbed up into the mountains, seeing more and more snow as we drove, snow caps giving way to completely covered slopes. We climbed through the pass, drove through a looong tunnel, and emerged on the other side in Hardanger fjord land, descending to sea level where Odda is, still surrounded on all sides by the snow capped mountains.

While I'm here I'll be blogging regularly (hopefully daily) on: themadafrican.blogspot.com - so feel free to take a look at it from time to time. If you're on Facebook, it automatically imports as a new Note.

I'm moving into one of my Uncle's apartments soon, and will have more time and space to mix the album, record bits and demos, and also to study Norwegian. It's a fascinating language, and I'm looking forward to learning a bit. There also might be some opportunities to record local music here, including a Steinway grand piano in a nearby church.

Myspace friends!

I wanted to let you know that in honor of the season you can now hear selections from the Christmas album streamed from the music player on my website ( www.hiramring.com) - some of you may have discovered this already.  The quality is excellent and we have gotten some great feedback on the CD from radio stations and publications as well as from all you folks.

FM 90.3 (WJTL) in the Lancaster area has decided to put two tracks from the album in its regular Christmas rotation, and here is a quote from a review by the local FLY MAGAZINE, which made such favorable comparisons as Sufjan Stevens, Bjork, and Over the Rhine: "4 thumbs!... a sincere and reverent collection of Christmas songs with excellent production and arrangement."  Look for the full review in December's edition.

In fact, due to the demand for these albums, we had to order an additional printing of CDs before Thanksgiving!  Needless to say, we hope you will feel the cheer as we remember the "wondrous clarion hour" when the Word became flesh.

We also have some great concert opportunities in the Lancaster area for you to hear these songs live (directions on my website) - but for everyone who can't make it out we are playing music live on the radio as well!

On Wednesday Dec 5th, from 7-8 AM (EST), we will be on WJTL's morning show - if you're on your way to work or there already, or just have some time to listen, please do so!  WJTL is FM 90.3 in Lancaster, PA and on the web at: http://www.wjtl.com/listen

On Friday, Dec 21st, from 9-10pm (EST), we will also be playing on WJTL, this time in the Audiolab with Phil Smith.  Tune in for a whole hour of great music and conversation!

Thanks again for all your support.  You have made this possible, and with your help this music will be able to touch more than we could on our own.

This is just a quick note to let you MySpacers know that life continues to move rapidly - which I'm sure you were already aware of. For me this means that a casual remark to a friend a couple weeks ago about making a Christmas album for friends and family has resulted in hectic effort over the past two weeks to compose, arrange, and record 12 christmas songs. We are nearing completion and are really excited about the tracks we've made!

This album is a small sampling of traditional sacred songs and three original tunes. You can hear the DEMO version here on MySpace. It's called 'O Little Child', and since recording that simple demo we have added drums, bass, piano, and a string section, to name a few instruments - it sounds really good! This has been a collaborative effort of local musicians: myself, Matthew Monticchio, David Green, Katie Becker, and others that we could rope in. It has a home-grown feel without sacrificing quality. And Ned Bustard has done a killer cover/CD design!

The traditional tracks we've included (some slightly re-arranged with a folk/jazz feel) are: O Come Emmanuel, Joy to the World, Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, O Come All Ye Faithful, Silent Night, Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming, Gentle Mary Laid Her Child, and All My Heart This Night Rejoices. If your favorite song isn't in there, let me know and we'll try to release it next year. =) Seriously - Christmas comes every year!

If you would like to Pre-Order this album through me, we are offering them for $7 each before Thanksgiving, when we will officially release them. After Thanksgiving (November 23rd), the CDs will be $10. To receive your order in time for the holidays, just send a check of seven dollars per CD (remember to include $2 per CD for shipping and handling in the US, and $4 for S&H outside the US) to the address below. You can make the check out to Ring Records or Hiram Ring.

Sorry we can't offer online sales at this time, but we are working on it, and will let you know when that is possible.

Blessings!
Hiram
