All starts with:

Who is up for the role of Sinestro in GREEN LANTERN? Someone Perfect!

Sinestro

Hey folks, Harry here with the most awesome - pretty reliable - rumor of the day. I'm putting this in the caveat as a rumor - as opposed to a rock solid, take it to the bank story. Right now, Martin Campbell is in the process of finalizing the rest of the cast for GREEN LANTERN to surround Ryan Reynolds with. And I'm not sure why, but I've just hit the point where I'm giddy and hopeful about a GREEN LANTERN movie. This story came from someone working on the film. That part is solid, what isn't - and won't be till it all gets finalized is the fact that JACKIE EARLE HALEY is leading the list to play SINESTRO!!! That's just about perfect in my book! Something that makes me absolutely giddy as all hell!
Oh... and according to my source, it's looking like SUPERMAN will be making a cameo, but that all depends upon how... other DC things go, but it is an indicator that DC is paying attention and taking note of what MARVEL is doing, which has excited all of us so much! But remember, you heard it all here first!

Later:

Jackie Earle Haley Scream_Awards_2009.jpg
Just a few hours ago I was standing on the red carpet of Spike TV’s 2009 Scream Awards. They’re recording the show tonight and it airs Tuesday October 27th. Anyway, while on the red carpet I managed to get a number of interviews and one of them was with Jackie Earle Haley.
The reason getting to speak with Jackie was great is I was able to ask him directly about the rumor he’s going to play Sinestro in director Martin Cambell’s “Green Lantern”.  If you missed the story, click here. But according to Jackie, tonight is the first he’s heard of this rumor. Of course I tried to find out more by asking him if he’d screen tested for the part, but Jackie told me that wasn’t true. Exactly what he had to say after the jump:
Before watching the interview…know I didn’t have a camera person helping me tonight so if the framing isn’t perfect…that’s why.
Also, while Jackie says he hasn’t been approached for the part, that doesn’t mean he won’t be down the road. It could be like he says at the end of the interview, “you guys are out in front of it and I don’t know anything about it yet. If something comes up I’ll let you know.”
Jackie Earle Haley
Was he shocked to hear he was cast as Sinestro in Green Lantern? Says he just heard about it walking the red carpet
I ask if he was screen tested for the movie. He says no.
What is it like for him to be talked about for key parts in big movies
On set of Nightmare on Elm Street the makeup took a toll on him. Is he now excited to go back and play the role again if they make a sequel
I finally ask him if he is in Green Lantern or if it’s a possibility. He says, “you guys are out in front of it and I don’t know anything about it yet. If something comes up I’ll let you know.”

Shortly after receiving an Oscar nomination for "Little Children," the Internet began buzzing with fans insisting that Jackie Earle Haley would make an ideal Rorschach in the "Watchmen" movie. When "Watchmen" hit theaters, many fans began lobbying for Haley to become the new Freddy Krueger.
Now, with "A Nightmare on Elm Street" in the can, Haley showed up to Saturday's Spike TV "Scream Awards" having just learned about another possible gig from the Internet: playing the supervillain Sinestro in "Green Lantern."
"I just heard about this, literally," Haley told MTV News of an anonymously sourced report on Ain't It Cool News claiming he will be offered the role of arch-enemy to Ryan Reynolds' Hal Jordan in the soon-to-shoot blockbuster.
"I know the guys that are doing it. It's exciting to me," he said. "It makes me want to go get the Green Lantern comics and start reading up."
For those who haven't been making sure that in brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape their sight, Sinestro first appeared in a "Green Lantern" comic in 1961. Originally assigned as the mentor of Hal Jordan (Reynolds) when he joined the inter-galaxy Green Lantern Corps, the two men had a falling out over Sinestro's iron-fisted ways, leading to Sinestro's expulsion and banishment to the antimatter universe. While there, the pencil-moustached baddie acquired a yellow power ring that can counter the Corps' green rings.
Splash Page recently offered a casting call for the role of Sinestro, and named five actors we think could play Jordan's mentor-turned-nemesis. While Haley's name wasn't among them, he's certainly an intriguing choice—though he admits he might need to do a little research.
"I've been hearing about that," Haley said of rumors he might play the character. "I don't know much about it. I'm a comics fan, but I haven't gotten into that one yet. I guess I'd better do my homework."
"I heard about [Ryan Reynolds being in it]," he explained of the superhero fanboy/actor who recently brought Deadpool to life in the "Wolverine" spin-off flick. "I'd love to work with him."
Following his "Watchmen" and "Nightmare" gigs, Haley (who made a name for himself in the late Seventies playing Kelly Leak in the "Bad News Bears" movies, but spent the next decade-and-a-half struggling with low-profile work) is quick to point out that he always pays attention when fans start saying he'd be right for a role. "A lot of the roles I've been doing were first suggested by people on the Internet," he explained of the Sinestro rumor. "It could be cool."

Akiva Goldsman, the screenwriter/producer who has brought us such gems as Batman & Robin, Lost in Space, The Da Vinci Code, Hancock and I am Legend, recently spoke to the L.A. Times and dropped a few tidbits of info on the many comic book films he currently has in the pipeline as a producer.
So, if you want some updates on DC Comic films Lobo, Swamp Thing, Jonah Hex and more, keep on reading as I cut down the lengthy interview into some easy-to-absorb snippets for you to feast on.
Check it out:

Starting with Lobo, which is being directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes):

Lobo
“There’s something hyperbolic and authentic about a Guy Ritchie movie. His best movie are deeply, deeply  stylized yet they are all grounded; there’s a grit of stylization, which sounds like an oxymoron but it makes perfect sense when you’ve seen his films…We’ve never seen Guy’s sensibility married to a project with such a large special effects budget.
We’ve got the character design pretty much done…and the test will get us moving forward to the next step.”
According to Goldsman, a test scene for Lobo will be shot in November and after that we can expect to hear some casting news. Check out our own Lobo casting post for some choice nominees to play the character.
Jonah Hex poster header
Next let’s get word on the upcoming adaptation of Jonah Hex, a comic book western starring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, Will Arnett and John Malkovich. Said Goldsman:
“He’s a character that has been described as having one foot on Earth and one foot beyond the grave, that he speaks to the dead . . . at the same time he is very much [like Sergio Leone's] ‘The Man With No Name.’ “
A lot of people around the blogosphere seem to still be on the fence when it comes to Jonah Hex - although our own Vic Holtreman seemed to like what he saw of the film at this summer’s San Diego Comic Con. A lot of guys have gone ga-ga about the prospect of seeing Megan Fox do a spicy love scene (Hex is going to be R-rated) but then again, that prospect never panned out into profit for Jennifer’s Body.
My only concern is that Jonah Hex is being directed by Jimmy Hayward, whose biggest achievements up until now have been in the Pixar animation department, or helming Horton Hears a Who! - Will he do well with a live-action western? We shall see…
Finally, on the subject of a new Swamp Thing film (one more closely based on Alan “Watchmen” Moore’s run of the character):
“We want a film with real Southern, dark horror overtones, a little bit like a classic Universal horror film,”
Swamp Thing
None of that, though, changes the fact that Goldsman might be booed off the stage if he were introduced at a comic-book convention. "Batman & Robin," the bloated 1997 movie directed by Joel Schumacher and starring George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger, certainly possesses an odious place in Hollywood history. Times critic Kenneth Turan said the Goldsman script had the "eerie feeling of having no beginning, no middle and no end." That was on the gentle end of the reaction; Goldsman and Schumacher actually received death threats, which suggests that there are a lot of people in the world who take their funny books seriously. A few months ago, Kevin Feige, the president of production at Marvel Studios, said that "Batman & Robin" was more than a mere failure. "That may be the most important comic-book movie ever made," said Feige, whose studio is now at work on "Iron Man 2" and "Thor." "It was so bad that it demanded a new way of doing things. It created the opportunity to do 'X-Men' and 'Spider-Man,' adaptations that respected the source material and adaptations that were not campy."

Batman and Robin

Goldsman won't exactly apologize for the film, but he comes pretty close. He said he is proud of the effort put into it and weary of the conversations about its merit. He did learn a lesson from the film. "What got lost in 'Batman & Robin' is the emotions aren't real," Goldsman said, picking his words carefully. "The worst thing to do with a serious comic book is to make it a cartoon. I'm still answering for that movie with some people."

'SUPERMAN/BATMAN : PUBLIC ENEMIES 2' in the Works

Comics2Film can exclusively report that Warner Premiere is so happy with the performance of the 'Superman/Batman: Public Enemies' home video release that they're looking into the first sequel to come out of their highly-successful direct-to-home animated feature slate.
Details are sketchy for 'Superman/Batman 2' but most likely it'll draw from one of the subsequent story lines from the Jeph Loeb comics series.
If we were running the circus we'd go with the timeline twisting "Absolute Power" or the ultimate Maximus alternate-reality bending "With a Vengeance" (altough that story may be too similar to the 'Crisis on Two Earths' movie that's on the way). Of course, we'd also dig seeing the lighthearted, post-Loeb "L'il League" story brought to animated life.
And if DC Universe is looking for Superman/Batman team-ups, the well certainly goes deeper than the 2003-present series, with team up books going all the way back to the early 1940s.
What do you think, Maniacs? What storyline would you like to see in 'Superman/Batman 2'?

Doug Jones about Green Lantern

Which part are you going to play in the “Green Lantern” movie?

Am I going to play a part in the “Green Lantern” movie? I did hear such a rumor a couple of months ago, but no one has called me regarding this one yet. But if there’s a character I’m right for, I’d be quite interested to hear about it.

More interview about other projects is here:  http://itsjustmovies.com/2222

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Big Blue Guy?

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Big Blue Guy?

It was less than two weeks between Guy Ritchie being tagged to direct a “Lobo” movie last month and actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan throwing his hat into the ring as one of the hopefuls for the lead role, so it was only natural that we bring up DC’s “Main Man” when we had a chance to sit down with Morgan recently.
Asked whether he’d reached out to Ritchie yet, Morgan downplayed his previous conversation about the project.
“I said that in passing,” Morgan told MTV News of his prior comments regarding the “Lobo” lead. “I don’t t know that I’m a big blue guy.”
No stranger to comic book movies, Morgan recently wrapped shooting on “The Losers,” an adaptation of Jock and Andy Diggle’s action-packed comic book series. However, comic fans probably Morgan best as the face of The Comedian in Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ legendary series “Watchmen.”
Jeffrey Dean Morgan“Lobo happens to be a character that flies by the seat of his pants,” said Morgan of the character’s appeal. “I don’t know if I’m the guy or not, but I think it’s going to be one hell of a movie. I’ll certainly be going to see it.”
Lest you think that means he isn’t interested in the role, Morgan clarified his stance.
“Hey, if Guy Ritchie came to me and said, ‘You want to do Lobo?’ I’d say, ‘Yeah,’” said Morgan.

Curious to know how the recent shake-up over at Warner Bros. and DC might have affected some of your favorite, most anticipated film properties? Well, IGN recently had the chance to catch up with The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven whose attachment to a feature version of The Flash appears to be on the ropes.

"I was involved at one point with The Flash," said Roven. "And Warner Bros. came to me and said, 'The work that you've been doing hasn't yet resulted in something that any of us, including the filmmaking team, feel could be greenlit as a movie. We're trying to accomplish something that takes into account the entire, rich DC character world, and we'd like to pull it back. That doesn't mean that you aren't going to be a part of it. We just want to take a different kind of approach. Do you mind if we try that?' If we had something that was really working…"

"Like, for example, they had something that was more or less working for them on Green Lantern, and now you have Martin Campbell directing it…But we didn't," Roven continued. "The David Goyer screenplay, that didn't work. Goyer left the project. We then embarked with David Dobkin, trying to come up with another approach. We hadn't even hired a writer at that point. So for us, we completely understood. I've been making movies with Warner Bros. for 15 years, so that was fine, but I hope one day there's a way for me to get re-involved in the project. "

None of which is to say that The Flash has been permanently hobbled, only that Roven's involvement is currently uncertain. Check back with IGN Movies for more as things come together.

The Flash Picture

IGN Movies ran an interview with producer Charles Roven yesterday, with a headline that asked if Warner Bros.' planned big-screen adaptation of DC Comics' The Flash had been "hobbled."

"I was involved at one point with The Flash," Roven informed us. Do you mind if we try that?'"

The film's current screenwriter, Dan Mazeau, contacted IGN Movies today to give us the project's current status. "Just to chime in on your latest article: The Flash has not been hobbled. Everything is moving forward as planned," Mazeau explained. "I'm still writing the script. Geoff Johns is still consulting. Flash fans have no cause for concern, and -- IMO -- lots to be excited about."

Green Lantern's release date has been announced, with Ryan Reynolds as the star. Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern sounds like a great match on paper, and after his turn in the X-Men series, it seems Reynolds is made for this world of films. With the starring role in Green Lantern though, Ryan Reynolds could be placing himself squarely on the A-list of actors.

The Green Lantern release date is scheduled for June 17, 2011, so it is still a bit of a ways off, but that doesn't mean the buzz can't get started.  The film is supposed to go into principal photography and begin shooting within about four months, and that will give producers plenty of time to create an epic super hero film. Green Lantern always seemed like one of those super hero movies that couldn't be made into a live action version, but it seems they are about to make it a reality.

Martin Campbell is on board to be the director of Green Lantern, and right now Ryan Reynolds is the only big name star attached to the project. That will certainly change as filming get closer to taking place. That only minor details about the script have been released, really shows that they have a lot of faith in Ryan Reynolds being able to pull off the role of Hal Jordan (Green Lantern). This just makes the year even better for Ryan Reynolds, who recently married Scarlett Johansson and seems to be box office gold.  He is coming off two high grossing films with Wolverine and a romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock.  Now it seems like the sky isn't the limit for Ryan Reynolds, as he seeks to take on the role of an out-of-this-world super hero.

First Look: Zoe Saldana in 'The Losers'

zoe-saldana-losers_l
Don’t let the smile fool you: Here’s what Zoe Saldana looks like as a complete bad ass. Because that’s what she’s playing in The Losers, Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the Vertigo comic book series — written by Andy Diggle and drawn by Jock — which follows a band of disavowed intelligence operatives trying to claw their way back into the world, by any means necessary. And some of those means involve massive amounts of property damage.
Due in theaters in April of 2010, The Losers finds the once-and-future Uhura taking on the role of Aisha, a mysterious South American hellion who joins forces with Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Roque (Idris Elba), Pooch (Columbus Short), Jensen (Chris Evans), and Cougar (Oscar Jaenada) to take down the man responsible for their collective misfortunes, Max (Jason Patric). According to Diggle, “Aisha has to be deadly and desirable in equal measure, and Zoe embodies both qualities in spades. Trust me, you’ve never seen her kick ass the way she does in The Losers!”

Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds may be tackling the roles of two of comics' toughest characters, but that doesn't mean he's immune from the power of Hollywood secrecy. Appearing as a guest on last evening's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," the actor seemed stoked about portraying both Green Lantern and Deadpool – even if he had to keep his reasons to himself for the most part.
Though Reynolds insisted that he had to stay quiet on the details of the upcoming "Green Lantern" adaptation, he did reveal one important bit of information – a rough timetable for filming.
"I'm 4-5 months away from beginning shooting," Reynolds told Fallon, musing that the consequences of leaking additional information could be severe.
"It's crazy, it's the only job I've ever had that I'm not allowed to really talk about. I think there's like a representative from Warner Brothers who I'm sure is following me around ready to blow-dart me if I say a single word," said Reynolds, "I probably have a chip in me somewhere, like if I start talking about it, I'll just pass away."
Though Fallon himself didn't seem very familiar with the concepts or powers behind Green Lantern, Reynolds was able to set him straight in terms of what the movie would encapsulate.
"A lot of [the film] is sort of like a space epic and some of it is on planet Earth," said Reynolds, "[Green Lantern] has this ring and he's been chosen to have this power and the ring can kind of create anything that his will or his imagination can conjure up."
"At his point [playing both roles] makes you just like an Internet hero, nothing really more than that," joked Reynolds.

In continuing Superman/Batman: Public Enemies-related news, the home video release for the new animated feature also includes a look at the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie title, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. Click on the thumbnails below to view a selection of images from the "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths - First Look" featurette available on the Superman/Batman: Public Enemies DVD Two-Disc Special Edition and Blu-ray releases.

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, the next direct-to-video DC Universe Animated Original Movie release, is slated to hit DVD and Blu-ray in Spring 2010. Sam Lui (Hulk Versus) and Lauren Montgomery (Wonder Woman) direct the feature. Stay tuned for further updates on this upcoming release.

Crisis on Two Earths - Ultraman"Superman/Batman: Public Enemies" hits shelves today, but if you're already looking ahead to the next DC animated feature, "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths," you should take a special interest in "Public Enemies." As we mentioned last month, the "Public Enemies" DVD and Blu-Ray boxes revealed the identity of the upcoming "Crisis" feature and promised a behind-the-scenes featurette revealing more details about the project.
I posted my review of "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies" earlier today, but just in case you're still on the fence about picking up the film on DVD or Blu-Ray, here's a rundown of what you'll see in the "Crisis on Two Earths" featurette—including the first look at the Justice League's alternate-universe counterparts, the Crime Syndicate!
One of the most interesting elements of the featurette is that we get our first glimpse of many of the members of the Crime Syndicate, including good shots of Ultraman, Owlman, Superwoman and Power Ring. (We get a quick peek at someone who looks like Johnny Quick, too.) Here's a shot of Ultraman and Power Ring:
Crisis on Two Earths
Along with the full-color shots of various characters, we also get quite a bit of new concept art from the project, including some cool shots of Owlman throwing Batman into a wall, various character design sketches, and even a shot of what looks to be the Justice League battling Starro. Yes, there could actually be a Starro appearance in the film, folks.
From the footage shown during the featurette, Martian Manhunter appears to receive quite a bit of attention in the film's sub-plots, as there are several scenes featuring J'onn J'onnz with his JLA teammates and with an unknown female character who tells him that she wants to know the "real" him.
The featurette also includes commentary from "Crisis on Two Earths" writer Dwayne McDuffie, executive producer Bruce Timm, director Lauren Montgomery, voice director Andrea Romano and producer Gregory Novacek.
"We're basically taking a page from one of the original 'Crisis' stories form the '60s where the Justice League encountered a group of villains on a parallel Earth," said Timm of the "Crisis on Two Earths" plot. "They were called the Crime Syndicate."
According to Novacek, the script for "Crisis on Two Earths" originated as a story arc in the "Justice League Unlimited" animated series, titled "Worlds Collide." The series was canceled before McDuffie's script made it to the screen, so the "Crisis" creators approached the writer about adapting it as a standalone animated feature. The key, according to Novacek, was bringing the story "closer to addressing the DC continuity and not the Justice League Unlimited continuity."
Romano indicated that the film's storyline will feature a heroic version of Lex Luthor from an alternate dimension who "comes to Earth to enlist the aid of the Justice League to help the entire universe not disappear." As one might expect, Superman has a tough time trusting the heroic intentions of this new Lex Luthor, but is forced to set his issues aside when confronted with the super-powered Syndicate.
"Basically, Luthor is the last hero on Earth," said Timm of the Syndicate's home dimension.
However, amid all the dimension-hopping, it looks like we get a healthy dose of the JLA's home dimension, too. One of the scenes appearing in the featurette offers a slow pan across a wrecked room populated by the none othe rthan the good ol' Detroit chapter of the Justice League. Seen rummaging in the wreckage is Gypsy, Vixen and (my personal favorite JLA:D member) Vibe—who appears to have received a youthful makeover in the feature.
Oh, and for anyone wondering exactly how bad-ass the "bad" version of Batman will be, there's also a short clip featuring Owlman (voiced by James Woods) holding Lex Luthor up by his throat that should offer all the proof you need that this isn't the Batman you've come to know.
"I'm here because I'm the baddest of the bad," growls Owlman as he holds a struggling Luthor up by his neck. "Anybody who ever stood in my way is dead. Everybody."
Crisis on Two Earths

The “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” Straight-To-Blu movie came out yesterday with a preview of “Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths.” MTV has posted this preview (which inexplicably follows 60 seconds of very old Video Music Awards news):

James McTeigue - Superman
A few days ago I spoke with Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX (full interview is forthcoming). At the end I asked him to give me an update on a few of his projects, including his next feature The Raven, which SlashFilm first revealed back in August. I also just had to ask him about the Superman rumor again (see here), since that rumor just doesn't ever seem to go away. While he reiterated what we already know about Warner Brothers putting Superman on hold for the time being, he did reveal a bit about what he would do if he ever does get to direct a Superman movie. You'll want to hear what he said.
Before we get to Superman, let's look at The Raven first. Inspired by the famous Edgar Allen Poe poem of the same name, The Raven follows Poe and the last five days before his death. As McTeigue explains: "It's basically set in 1850s Baltimore. The logline would be: an amalgamation of Poe's stories crossed with Se7en. It's about a serial killer loose in 1850s Baltimore. And as his motif, he kills people the way Poe kills them in his books." Sounds pretty good, right? McTeigue has already been scouting locations in Europe. When I asked if it would be more action or horror, here's what he said:
"Yea there's a couple of [action] set pieces, I wouldn't say it's action [though], it's more a thriller. It's about Poe trying… At each murder that he does, the killer leaves a clue, and basically Poe is set against the clock to find someone before they die. So each murder that he does, he leaves a clue for him. So I would say it's like a thriller, a dark thriller. Sort of in the vein of of that book The Alienist, in that kind of vein."
I told him that like V for Vendetta, it seemed like it would be a very poetic film. McTeigue replied: "Yea, it's about the 5 last fictionalized days of Poe's life, so there is the poetry of Poe in there, that is through the film. But it's done in such a way that it feels like part of the film, it doesn't stick out. I'm really happy with the script, so I'm really excited to get it made soon." Me too, James. Glad to hear he's already working on this, since I love his style. Read the original article for more details about the story and Poe's mysterious death.
Back on the topic of another Superman movie, I asked James if there was any truth to that rumor that he, or the Wachowskis, might be involved in another movie. His answer started out short and sweet: "Maybe some truth to… I've had some discussions, the Wachowskis to a lesser degree, but the Superman franchise is in a strange kind of place at the moment," McTeigue revealed. "I think they're still trying to work out the mechanics of how that can come together." That's exactly what we've heard recently. But I got a bit more out of him when I asked if he'd be interested in doing it if they ever did offer it to him. He said:
"I think I would be interested in doing it if they let me do it the way I wanted to do it. I would say that, if you take the Richard Donner Supermans and the last Superman [from Bryan Singer], I think that Superman is probably ripe for a bit of a change up. I think society has changed around the core idea of what Superman was."
"And I'm not saying you do the ubiquitous dark Superman, I'm not saying that… I'm just saying that I think there are some things that you could excise from the Superman mythology that people would get into it, if you took the world that he was in and changed that a bit, and maybe even project that into the future a bit. I think you don't really have to play into the origin story anymore. I think there's a whole bunch of things you could do to make that film more alive and exciting again."
I mentioned that Mark Millar's Superman: Red Son graphic novel is one that people reference for a much different, but still brilliant, storyline for Superman. "I think you always incur the wrath of the people - they love Superman," McTeigue said. "Why not make it a little different, change it up a bit?" I agree, but then again, he's such a well-known character, that I don't dare pitch an idea for fear of it not living up to what everyone wants. I'm sure James has his own brilliant idea already. It's just a matter of if WB likes his idea.
To wrap things up, I asked James about the other rumor that IMDb lists his name as a co-director (with David S. Goyer) on the still-in-development X-Men Origins: Magneto movie. As you might've expected, that is pretty much a completely BS rumor. "I think David Goyer would probably be surprised about that, actually. I think that's just one of those rumors that kind of starts… Until he drops out!" McTeigue said he would love to do it, but it's Goyer's project, he wrote it, he'll probably direct, and he won't touch it since it's entirely Goyer's baby. So there you have it, the latest rumor updates straight from James McTeigue himself!
