While the local news media is waiting for yet another scandal to erupt with in indictment of Monica Conyers aka Kwame Kilpatrick if he was a female and another bunch of greedy members of a city pension fund spending over 385,000 taking vacations on taxpayer dollars...two articles came out this week about just how bad we are hurting here in SE Michigan.

First,Forbes Magazine is reporting that Detroit is 3rd of among the hardest hit cities that will be slow to recover from this depression. Michigan's unemployment is now 14.1 percent and is expected to hit 15% in 2010. Its a very hard spot to be in right now,a fellow auditor at another hotel told me her husband had been laid off recently...they were ready so things are okay for a minute but you could hear the strain in the voice.
I want to get a small part-time 2nd job,we need a new sofa very badly as ours is now 8 years old and the springs are shot..but where does get the extra money for that? Change and pop bottles only get ya so far....
And now this story below. Detroit just sucks.....its a deeply corrupted racist town with a high genocide rate and very few redeeming factors. The public schools are a joke with some of highest drop out rates in the nation. Teen pregancy is rampant, the crime is high and other then the casinos, sporting events and summer festivals and the DIA,there isn't anything good about this city.
I like to think hope is not lost, while its too early to tell...Dave Bing is very hard at working to repair some of damage that the corrupt City Council has done. Hopefully he'll get added muscle if Gary Brown can win a seat and Ken Cockrel can live without being mayor. The schools are getting seriously cleaned up w/bloated teachers/principals getting kicked to the curb.
Of course the now powerless Gov. Jennifer Granholm's move to release some 4,000 inmates from jails being closed is threatening all of us. And Detroit especially. When Granholm's name was being tossed about for the Supreme Court,we all laughed...how the hell could Obama seriously even consider naming her a judge when she can't even govern our jails here???

I included the WSJ story below.....

feel free to drop a comment or two....
Shopping Becomes a Challenge as Auto-Industry Collapse Adds to City's Woes

DETROIT -- They call this the Motor City, but you have to leave town to buy a Chrysler or a Jeep.
Borders Inc. was founded 40 miles away, but the only one of the chain's bookstores here closed this month. And Starbucks Corp., famous for saturating U.S. cities with its storefronts, has only four left in this city of 900,000 after closures last summer.
There was a time early in the decade when downtown Detroit was sprouting new cafes and shops, and residents began to nurture hopes of a rebound. But lately, they are finding it increasingly tough to buy groceries or get a cup of fresh-roast coffee as the 11th largest U.S. city struggles with the recession and the auto-industry crisis.

No national grocery chain operates a store here. A lack of outlets that sell fresh produce and meat has led the United Food and Commercial Workers union and a community group to think about building a grocery store of its own.
One of the few remaining bookstores is the massive used-book outlet John K. King has operated out of an abandoned glove factory since 1983. But Mr. King is considering moving his operations to the suburbs.
Last week, Lochmoor Chrysler Jeep on Detroit's East Side stopped selling Chrysler products, one of the 789 franchises Chrysler Group LLC is dropping from its retail network. It was Detroit's last Chrysler Jeep store.
"The lack of retail is one of the biggest challenges the city faces," said James Bieri, president of Bieri Co., a Detroit-based real-estate brokerage. "Trying to understand how to get it to come back will be one of the most important keys to its resurgence -- if it ever has one."
Detroit's woes are largely rooted in the collapse of the auto industry. General Motors Corp., one of downtown's largest employers and the last of the Big Three auto makers with its headquarters here, has drastically cut white-collar workers and been offered incentives to move to the suburbs. Other local businesses that serviced the auto maker, from ad agencies and accounting firms to newsstands and shoe-shine outlets, also have been hurt.
The city's 22.8% unemployment rate is among the highest in the U.S.; 30% of residents are on food stamps.
"As the city loses so much, the tax base shrinks and the city has to cut back services," said Margaret Dewar, a professor of urban planning at the University of Michigan. That causes such hassles for retailers as longer police-response times, as well as less-frequent snow plowing and trash pickup.

While all of southeast Michigan is hurting because of the auto-industry's troubles, Detroit's problems are compounded by decades of flight to the suburbs.
Hundreds of buildings were left vacant by the nearly one million residents who have left. Thousands of businesses have closed since the city's population peaked six decades ago.
Navigating zoning rules and other red tape to develop land for big-box stores that might cater to a low-income clientele is daunting.
The lack of grocery stores is especially problematic. The last two mainstream chain groceries closed in 2007, when The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. sold most of the southeast Michigan stores in its Farmer Jack chain to Kroger Corp., which declined to purchase the chain's two Detroit locations, causing them to close.
A 2007 study found that more than half of Detroit residents had to travel twice as far to reach a grocery store than a fast-food outlet or convenience store.
Michelle Robinson, 42 years old, does most of her shopping at big-box stores in the suburbs. When visitors staying at the hotel near her downtown office ask where to shop, she sends them to a mall in Dearborn, 12 miles away.
A few retailers are thriving. Family Dollar Stores Inc. has opened 25 outlets since 2003. A handful of independent coffee shops and a newly opened Tim Horton's franchise cater to workers downtown.
Discount grocer Aldi Inc. opened stores in the city in 2001 and 2005. A spokeswoman said the chain is "very bullish" on Detroit. Farmer's markets draw crowds looking for fresh produce.
Olga Stella, an official at the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, works to persuade businesses to move to the city. She says companies have underestimated Detroit's economic potential and that Aldi and Family Dollar are proof there's money to be made here.
Meanwhile, the former Lochmoor Chrysler Jeep is now Lochmoor Automotive Group, a used-car dealership and repair shop. Gina Russo, daughter of the dealer's longtime owner, is being groomed to take over the family business. She has agreed to start selling small pickup trucks made by India's Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

I like to thank you all who wrote/commented on my beloved cat's health. I'm trying some well proven home treatment for his fur/skin condition and am seeing if this works. His bathroom trips have not improved and that is what will land him in to see Dr. Foss come next week. He is still having small accidents right besides his litterbox. But his eating and drinking are normal and he enjoyed a french fry tonight.

My week has been fun and heavy at the same time. I'm really enjoying Facebook and have re-connected with so many wonderful friends both San Jose and even some old high school classmates. And also a few folks who have left here because of the decline of MySpace's content and quality. Can't blame them there....you can really see how bad Fox has run this site into the ground. It used to actually be cool because of all the political and social activity here but thats long gone, isn't it?
We got the projects I wrote about a couple of entries ago pretty much done. Put fresh mulch down in the flowerbeds, proped up a tree that was leaning over, nuked the lawn w/weed and feed, patched a corner of our yard that was been overtaken by our neighbor's weeds. Sprayed weed killer on their side of the fence. Didn't get to plant our 3 arbor vitaes as of yet but will do once this rain leaves. It was pretty gloomy today but we did dodge a day of nasty weather that included a small tornado about 45 miles south of us. Today we had flash flooding in Detroit and yeah, the local news crew caught the 2 or 3 buffoons who thought thier car would make it despite being warned not to....and now they have some pretty badly damaged cars.
We tackled our upstairs linen closet, reworked our storage plan and also swapped out some older towels for some fresh ones my wife found at Home Goods. I washed, dried and folded the old towels and am giving them to our new front desk mgr,Tina. She and her husband are about two months away from having thier first child. Things are tight for them as her husband works in the car supplier industry, not one of fields that one wants to be in these days...so we feel great helping a very nice couple out.
The Yankees got swept again by the Red Sox....who have won the first first 8 of 18 games between the rivals. Its a little disheartening even for us diehard Yankees fans,I rather lose all 6 games to the Mets then getting beat 8 times by the stupid Red Sox. I lost my bet with Coco over on FB and had to write "The Red Sox are number 1". And what outrage do I see from Jersey Girl,my Yankees wingperson? Writing about some tool named Chad being more blonde. God help us all....
Marvel.com posted the first picture of Mickey Rourke as "Whiplash" in next year's Iron Man 2 movie. And can I take a second here and to say how CHEESY it looked??
It doesn't even come CLOSE to what the original Whiplash was wearing...and this brought up a spirited debate among my pal and fellow fanboy,Farm.
While Marvel has done a good job capturing the heroes, why does it somehow manage to screw up the bad guys so much? Like Sabretooth in the first X-Men movie and hell, the Sabretooth of the Wolverine movie as well. And don't get me started on Juggernaut of X3: The Last Stand. What is it about casting AND costuming the bad guys that Marvel misses but DC is excelling at?
Feel free to chip in on this subject.....like to here your feedback.
Next entry on Sunday,I will share a sad tale that may have a happy ending...
thanks for reading!

I am sitting here at work but I am concerned about Derek Jeter,I think he might have some issues...his fur is dry looking and his dander, despite being brushed 3 times a week,is pretty bad...and for the first time,he missed a jump he normally makes quite easy.

I am going to make a appointment w/Dr. Foss this week. I'm am very worried about my buddy. He is my best friend on many levels and while he is only 10 years old, health issues have to be acknowledged I suppose.

Your prayers and thoughts would be most welcome.

I am reading the USA Today about how there are signs we are starting to bounce back from this recession. Funny, guess Michigan must have missed that memo because the slide continues downhill. The Big 3 are still fighting for thier lives, thousands and thousands of workers are losing jobs. Next week the majority of the car dealership that were told to close will.
And the future of Michigan, especially Detroit,is looking extremely poor. I have written before just how bad the public schools here are,but honestly,no really really has a idea just how bad it is.

Until now.

Led by the most corrupt bunch of racists niggas you never want to meet (hi Monica Conyers,Jo Ann Watson,Martha Reeves,Barbara Rose Collins...and throw in Konvicted Kawame Kilptrick and his lying bitch,Christine Beatty.) running this city into the ground and add in the worst run schools in the nation and you have sealed Detroit's fate.

This city ain't coming back....its like the Titanic, sinking slowly and with no rescue in sight. You would think that the seeds of renewal would lie in bright, dedicated teachers and principals teaching and showing the youth of Detroit that they can make a difference....except they are too busy "getting thiers" by stealing the schools blind.
Millions of taxpayers (like mine) dollars are being pipelined into many teachers pockets along with lavish spending on parties, functions and "conferences" that are routinely shown to be a massive waste of cash.
And now a real effort made by Robert Bobb to save Detroit's kids by shutting down schools that are losing enrollment, have godawful teachers and the worst bookkeeping in the country (must be products of DPS) is being fought. Bobb is cleaning house but as always, the crooks at DPS are fighting to keep thier cashflow open at the expense of those same kids.
Its sad watching these ignorant kids protesting thier school being closed when in fact, they would BENEFIT from having bad apples no longer teaching them. And having the real teachers who really to teach be given a real chance to do so.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Been a quiet week here....but the weather has been great. Got to hit the lawn with the mower for the first time this week. And that in itself is funny, see we share a common backyard with two other houses,we don't have fences up yet we know where our property lines are. But if one had doubts, you only have to wait til someone cuts thier grass.
When someone cuts, that lawn looks very nice and all of a sudden YOUR lawn is looking pretty crappy. Homeowner pride gets you pretty quick and you can't wait til you yank that mower's ripcord and get to mowin'! Then the last house is looking crappy and the cycle begins again.

Derek and I were bird watching this week at the robin's nest. I was reading the paper and he was in the window mewing softly whenever he saw activity. Suddenly he sits up and lets off a big "meow",I look up and there they go...the chicks took wing and left the nest. One flew pretty strong and away, the other sort of crash landed in the front lawn and sat there. I went outside and watched him for a while, making sure no one bothered him. I took a shoebox just case he was unable to fly. I could hear his momma chirpin' away but he just sat there for 20 minutes. I was about to go get him when he took off,not the best flight, but he made it to some branches where t was safer. We left the nest as is for now.

I am finding myself enjoying Facebook more and more....in fact,I am import my blog here to my page there. Of course many of my friends there will be shocked to see how I roll....meaning I despise Republicans, hate churches and thier greedy handouts and talk hella trash about Detroit aka Murder City. Truly the most racist, genocidal city in America.  But thats how I write and how I feel. I may not write long articles but I think I get my point across.

We enjoyed our first BBQ of the season this weekend,we did hamburgers on Friday, chicken shish kabobs on Saturday and hot dogs tonight. Throw in some fresh corn, homemade chcolate chip cookies and iced tea and it was a great weekend at Iron Chef Sullivan's grill *LOL*.

This week will find us once again in the yard, planting Columbines that I got my wife. I was inspired by some certain artwork that a dear friend had done highlighting that flower. Also got some daises and decided to try a tomato plant as well. Personally,I think we're whistling dixie there....we'll be laying some mulch down and I have two holes to mend on our deck.  And of course, pulling weeds will be the highlight of this activity...

So how did you observe Memorial Day?

John Charles Waldron (24 August 19004 June 1942) was a United States Navy aviator who led a squadron of torpedo bombers in World War II. He and most of his squadron perished in the Battle of Midway.

Naval aviation training and shore duty

Waldron was born on 24 August 1900 at Fort Pierre, South Dakota. He received an appointment as midshipman from his home state on 16 June 1920 and graduated with the United States Naval Academy Class of 1924. Following his initial sea duty in Seattle (CA-11), Waldron went to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla., where he received his wings in the summer of 1927. Over the ensuing months, Waldron flew with torpedo squadrons (VT-1S and VT-9S and received his commission as a Lieutenant (jg.) on 16 February 1928. He served at the Naval Academy from 24 May to 13 September 1929, where he instructed midshipmen in the field of aviation. Then, after duty as an instructor at the NAS Pensacola, between October 1929 and June 1931, Waldron went to sea again, this time with Scouting Squadron 3B (VS-3B), based on board Lexington (CV-2), reporting for duty on 1 July 1931.

Waldron flew observation aircraft off Colorado (BB-45), before he joined Patrol Squadron 1B (VP-1B), Battle Force, for a brief period in late 1936. Subsequently flying from Saratoga (CV-3) with Fighter Squadron 3 (VF-3) until the early summer of 1939, he reported back to NAS, Pensacola, for further instructor's duty on 27 June 1939. Waldron then served three successive tours of shore duty, all involving flying, at the Naval Proving Ground, Dahlgren, Va.; the Bureau of Ordnance, Washington, D.C.; and finally in the 3rd Naval District, where he was appointed naval inspector of ordnance at the plant of Carl L. Norden, Inc., in New York—makers of the famed Norden bombsight. Detached from that duty in the summer of 1941, Lt. Comdr. Waldron took command of the newly-formed Torpedo Squadron 8 (VT-8), part of the embryonic air group being assembled for the new fleet carrier Hornet (CV-8) at Newport News, Virginia. The Pearl Harbor attack, though, meant that his training of his men had to be intensive.

 At Midway

"Torpedo 8" did not get a chance to practice its trade, however, until nearly 10 months after it had been commissioned at Norfolk. Too late to take part in the Battle of the Coral Sea, VT-8 would receive its brutal baptism of fire at the turning point of the Pacific War—the Battle of Midway. In the days preceding that battle, VT-8 led a relaxed existence on board the carrier as she steamed toward "Point Luck" from Pearl Harbor in the first few days of June 1942. Finally, on the eve of battle, Commander Waldron called his men together and distributed a mimeographed plan of attack. He concluded by saying that if worst came to worst, he wanted each man to do his utmost to destroy the enemy. "If there is only one plane left to make a final run-in," he told his men, "I want that man to go in and get a hit. May God be with us all. Good luck, happy landings, and give 'em hell."

The next day, 4 June, the 15 Douglas TBD-1 Devastators of VT-8 launched from Hornet's flight deck in search of the enemy. LCDR Waldron, disagreeing with the Hornet's Commander, Air Group about where the Japanese carriers would be found, soon split his squadron off from the Hornet strike group, and in fact happened to lead his unit directly to the Japanese carrier group, the only carrier-launched strike group to succeed in navigating directly to the engagement (the Hornet's dive-bomber and accompanying fighter escort missed the day's engagements entirely). Waldron, leading the first carrier attack group to approach the Japanese carriers (somewhat after 9:00AM local time, over an hour before the American dive bombers would arrive), was grimly aware of the lack of fighter protection, but true to his plan of attack committed Torpedo 8 to battle. Without fighter escort, his attack bombers vulnerably underpowered and lacking in defensive armament, and required by the unreliable torpedoes to fly low and slow directly at their targets, all of the Hornet's torpedo planes soon fell to the undivided attention of the enemy's combat air patrol of Mitsubishi "Zero" fighters. Of the 30 men who set out that morning, only one—Ens. George H. Gay, Jr., USNR—survived. Their sacrifice, however, had not been in vain. The TBDs had drawn down the fighter cover over the Japanese carriers and forced the ships to maneuver radically, delaying the aircraft rearming operations the Japanese were committed to. After two further, separate attacks by the remaining two attack squadrons over the next hour, the Japanese fighter cover and anti-air coordination had become overly focused on low-level defense, leaving the Japanese carriers completely vulnerable to the late-arriving Douglas SBD Dauntless high-altitude carrier dive bombers from Yorktown (CV-5) and Enterprise (CV-6), which were able to deliver their strikes that quickly and fatally damaged three of the four Japanese carriers, changing the course of the battle.

Torpedo 8 earned the Presidential Unit Citation (US); Lt. Comdr. Waldron received the Navy Cross posthumously, as well as a share of the unit citation.

She Walks In Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and in her eyes
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair'd the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven trees
Or softly lightens o'er her face
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure,how dear their dwelling-place.

And on the cheek and o'er that brow,
So soft,so calm,yet eloquent
The smiles that win,the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

from me to you.

So yesterday was "doomsday" for 789 Chrysler dealers across the country. This is merely the speartip,as over 3,000 dealersships are expected to close by 2010,causing a job loss of 159,000,massive property tax losses for cities, critical ad revenue for local papers. This is a serious blow to the economic recovery and the fallout is going to be crippling on so many levels.

One of local 15 dealership that got the axe was the Fox Hills dealership here in Plymouth...we bought both of our PT Cruisers there. I told my wife the news and we both strongly agreed,I would call the salesman who sold my wife her car (the guy who sold me mine has been gone) and let him know we would be willing to write a letter of reference on his behalf....he was kind, professional, ethical and had a nice sense of humor. I did chat with him and while he says he "might retire",I don't think he will. He was very concerned for his co-workers and is worried for a lot of them.  He has good reason...what was really sad is that so many dealers were caught by surprise, this was a very fast and nasty step the automakers have undertaken as part of trying to save themselves...but what a bitter pill to swallow.

But I do have a request,if you have bought a car recently and had a good experience with the salesman, call him/her up and thank them. We did when bought our cars and doing it again will help the confidence of these poor folks.

Its now Saturday morning...my back is on fire, our frame is bowing in the middle which is causing the bed to bend and has knocked my spine out of whack so I am going to have to visit the local chiropractor on Mon-Tues for an adjustment and figure out how to fix this frame.

I'm pretty excited...we are getting away for a mid-week overnighter to Put-In-Bay again. We haven't been since we lived in Northville but after peeping the offseason prices,we are so there! Its about a two hour car ride from where we live now,we're leaving early Wednesday morning and hitting the trail.
Put-In-Bay is a very cool secret,it only has 200 year 'round residents,a small airport and it can only traveled to by boat/small plane. Only residents are allowed cars, tourists drive golf carts which is half the fun. I have a few pictures up from my last trip, will post some new ones when we get back.

More Warren,Miichigan follies.....seems like called the Warren police about a escaped black panther in a drain ditch, the police rolled up and after being told a tranq dart would take to long to knock the panther out, decided to taser it instead.
The cops spotted the panther and indeed tasered it but good...but to no avail. The cat just sat there, they again tried to taser it....no effect. They then slipped a catchpole around it and dragged it out. The cops found it why thier tasers were ineffective....they had been tasering a STUFFED ANIMAL! *lmao*

And besides, the area's only panther was safely in his home, curled up on my lap.

Ite grey and overcast here today, our subdivison is have a massive yard sale. We made the rounds yesterday and bought a used Dyson vacauum for 20 bucks, its very colorful and probably needs a overhaul but for now,its pretty sweet. Those vacauums are amazing and pretty powerful.
I picked up a novel for a quarter and after I post this,am rambling down the street to see if my corner neighbor is selling today...last year,I picked up a few good sports themed books.

My Facebook adventures are going well....had a great time catching up w/old friends from my clubs days and even a couple of schoolmates....feel free to add me there/here if you want.

Stay well and drop a comment!
