Hey all,

I posted a new demo today called "October Skylines." I'm not sure if it will ever be recorded in another fashion, but I figured if there was a proper time to post this song, it's probably in October. So I hope you enjoy and I hope your October is treating you quite well.

This is a video of an unreleased song from Delta Spirit, who I firmly believe are one of the greatest bands to form in the last decade. The song is called "Vivian." It brought me to tears. You should copy this link into your Internet browser of choice (I don't know how to insert links) and check it out.

It's getting colder and my hibernation is getting even better! Writing a-plenty. look forward to sharing some new tunes with you alls.

Good morning all,

Just a quick thank you note to so many of the great folks that I got to meet and the many good friends I got to see again on Friday in Indianapolis. We're lucky to get to play for such a welcoming audience. And to those of you who made the long journeys from other corners of the country...I can't begin to tell you how encouraging it is to hear that you drove or flew for a couple hours of music. That is exactly the reason that I'm looking forward to finishing another record.

It's going to be quiet for a bit here due to a late summer/early autumn writing and recording hibernation. Thanks for your patience.

Be well,
David

Dearest friends,

Aaron, Jeff and I have been rehearsing quite a bit over the past few weeks, and we're very excited for this Friday's gig at Schubas. So if you live in Chicago or anywhere in the Midwest, come hang with us and The Gentleman Caller (http://www.myspace.com/thegentlemancaller).

We'll have all kinds of excitement ready for the show. As we steadily work toward putting together a new record (hopefully before 2020), these shows are spotlights that I look forward to on my calendar. Hope to see you there.

If you still need tickets, they are available on this animal we call the Internet - http://www.schubas.com.

I played this a few weeks ago in New York. I think this at-home demo version is about all I will ever do with it, so I decided to post it this morning along with some lyrics.

White Roses

i have climbed over rows of houses
waited nowhere and prayed for gold
i cared for you the only way i learned how
loved you so hard that i had to let go

i know everyone changes
i won't beg you to stay
may you always know where you're going
may white roses line the way

remember the nights we stayed out until dawn
wasted and tired from our five dollar dreams
we screamed at the city five stories below
take all you want, just leave our hearts clean

i know everyone changes
i won't beg you to stay
may you always know where you're going
may white roses line the way

love, be simple
time, be kind
wherever you're going, keep me on your mind

Hello dear friends,

I write to you this morning as I drink a second cup of coffee and reflect on the many hours of driving I did last week. I enjoyed New York as I always do. You have to stay out too late and wake up too early there because there is too much to see. Thanks to the good friends I got to see at the show on Wednesday. The setlist was:

Ain't No Hurry
One for the Road
White Roses
Annabelle
Hesitate
Steep Hope
There Comes A Time

After New York, I traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia. It's a nice Southern town with a lot of Thomas Jefferson history. I got a haircut, bought some used books and visited some of the local drinking wells in town. My drive back to the Midwest trekked through the Blue Ridge Mountains, which was one of the more inspiring trips I've had in quite some time.

While I've been away from the road for much of the past few months, this trip got me very excited about the prospect of a new record, which we will hopefully record by the end of the year. Until then, I posted a new tune for you to check out called "A Burning House."

A Burning House

Light a match
Somedays I can't see
Far enough
Somedays I can't breathe
It's only luck, I know, that's taken me right here
How do you keep good love in the clear
How do you keep good love in the clear

When everything has been forgotten
I'll carve your name into the floor
Of a burning house I've let my heart get lost in
Keep the keys, lock all the doors

I'll take a chance
I'm only 25
It ain't romance
that's helping me get by
It's these dead end streets, I know, that keep me moving night to day
How do you keep good love out of the way
How do you keep good love out of the way

When everything has been forgotten
I'll carve your name into the floor
Of a burning house I've let my heart get lost in
Keep the keys, lock all the doors

Let it burn
All the pictures in the hall
Let it burn
Watch it fall

When everything has been forgotten
I'll carve your name into the floor
Of a burning house I've let my heart get lost in
Keep the keys, lock all the doors

Good morning all,

I posted a new at-home demo this morning that Aaron and I worked on together - those are his shining, make-you-melt harmonies.  It's called "Steep Hope."

To all folks in the greater New York area, I'm packing up my car tomorrow and driving (yes, it's 14 hours) to the big town for a show on Wednesday. I'd love to see some of you there.

Cheers,
David

Steep Hope

For all I've loved
For all I've known
Got these borrowed clothes
Got these ragged bones
I'll run the red lights
In this tired town
I'm getting older
But I ain't laying down

It's a long, long climb
It's a long, long climb
I got a steep hope
in the back of my mind
I got a steep hope
in the back of my mind

For all I've been
For all I've seen
I got miles
To write my past clean
This bleeding heart
Beneath my skin
I ain't rolling over
I'm just digging in

It's a long, long climb
It's a long, long climb
I got a steep hope
in the back of my mind
I got a steep hope
in the back of my mind

Hey all,

It’s a beautiful day here in ....Chicago.... – sunny with none of the overwhelming Midwestern humidity that's going to be an everyday thing soon enough.

.. ..

Saw Augustana and the Counting Crows on Saturday evening. What a show. I’m a big fan of Augustana. I think they are a very under-appreciated band. They write some phenomenal songs, and they pay homage to the world of beautiful bluegrass-inspired harmonies.

.. ..

The Counting Crows surprised me, too. They were one of my favorite bands growing up, but I haven’t been quite as in love with their most recent work. But they killed it. They played a lot of old songs, and it reminded me of why I started trying to write lyrics. So many of their lines read just like good poetry: “I’ve been watching you for hours/it’s been years since we were born/we were perfect when we started/I’ve been wondering where we’ve gone.” What an insanely good song – it’s “A Murder of One” from their first record.

.. ..

So we’ve started rehearsing for a couple of full band shows in Chicago and Indianapolis toward the end of the summer…I know that seems like quite a long way off, but we’re really focused on making these special. Mark them on your calendar or blackberry or pocket organizer or whatever you use to remember what day of the week it is. Aaron, Jeff and I are putting together some old songs that I haven’t played in a couple of years and we’re crafting some of brand new tunes to play live. We're actually rehearsing tonight. As soon as I put the finishing touches on this fine piece of blog work, my guitar and I are going to the bus stop for the ride.

I'm going to put up a demo I worked on at my apartment last week called "Hard Earned Heart." It's got some vocal layering and electric guitar parts that I was pretty excited to try out. Soon enough, we're going to record songs that sound a bit more polished than the sounds of a microphone on a computer. But not too much more polished.

I hope you're all doing well and hope to see you soon. As always, thanks for listening.

Good morning folks,

I believe I'm one week late due to a vacation I took from using the Internet. It's a healthy break from opening a computer and answering electronic messages.

I recently borrowed a mandolin from a friend of mine, and I decided to use it for the recording of a new song called "The Ghosts of California" that I posted today. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording.

-david

The Ghosts of California

Tell me what it takes to remember
Tell me what it takes to be good again
Seven years running, trying to find the ocean
Now the wind just whispers, "take me home my friend"

These are the ghosts of California
Voices drowning in the sea
It's a good year for leaving
It's a good year for you and me

Build us a home made for heroes
Build us a boat that finds the stars
We watched the hillsides burn, the saddest kind of sunset
We can stay out here forever but we can't escape these scars

These are the ghosts of California
Voices drowning in the sea
It's a good year for leaving
It's a good year for you and me

Tell me what it takes to remember
Tell me what it takes to find our way
Seven years running, trying to find the ocean
Now we're standing on the shore without a word to say

These are the ghosts of California
Screaming songs that no one knows
It's a good year for leaving
It's a good year for letting go

It's a good year for leaving
It's a good year for letting go
