David Dyson-Unleashed

For the third time in eight years, modern funk/soul bassmaster David Dyson breaks away from his sideman career(currently with fellow Berklee alum and R&B royalty Lalah Hathaway among others) to write, produce, and mix a collection of tunes deep in the groove. The opening tune alone, The Lion's Den" features a thumb-muting pattern of sequencer-level consistency, a Marcus-style slap melody, greasy fingerstyle funk, a confident solo statement, and enough tasty tonal butter to bake a batch of bisquits.(For pure uncut funk, "Hot Sauce" just drips P-Funk-y goodness.) But while there's standout fretted and fretless throughout the album(as well as a myriad of other instruments he tracked), it's Dyson's application of modern R&B and hip hop grooves that make Unleashed the confident artistic statement of where he's at today. The groove in The Dream" could just as easily be a Jill Scott track, and "Coco's Butter Cafe" meets somewhere between Me'shell N'degeocello, Jaco Pastorious, and Miles Davis. Not a bad place for a bassist to be. -Bryan Beller-Bass Player Magazine -february issue 2009

I did the five questions in the june issue of Bass Player(just now seeing it) and the photo credit wasn't given. That photo was taken by Stephanie Taylor. Thanks Stephanie and sorry about the mistake. I'm big on giving credit and sent your credits with the photo so I don't know what happened.
Blessings,
David

These are a few of my favorite(maybe not as popular) groove CD's:

Lonnie Liston Smith-"Exotic Mysteries"-(Marcus Miller sets up a serious laid back vibe on most of this one. An alltime favorite!)

Brides Of Funkenstein-"Funk Or Walk"("Disco To Go"-Skeet woke me up with this one and then I was a big fan from there on. Also check out "Amorous" Wooo!!!)

Parlet-"Invasion Of The Booty Snatchers"(My jam is Huff & Puff-Skeet is killin' it)

P-Funk Allstars- "Live At The Beverly Theater"- (Skeet!, Skeet! & Skeet again!),

Parliament-"Motor Booty Affair"( Again Skeet rocks the title cut!)

Pleasure-"Future Now"(Nathaniel Phillips is a monster!)-The cut "Glide" was a learning experience for me comingup. "Old Flame" is a favorite slow jam too!

Donald Blackman-"Blackman"-(Barry Johnson)-This is authentic P-funk vibe with jazz elements! To me this is Dennis Chamber's at his funkiest!

Mother's Finest-"The Mother Factor","Another Mother Further", & "Live"(Wyzard is a beast!)

Gino Vanelli-"Brother To Brother"(Jimmy Haslip's funkiest to date!) They don't want us to write tunes like this any more. Let's bring it back ya'll!

Graham Central Station (Larry Graham- need i say more?) "Hair", "Can you Handle it?", & "Ghetto" Can't be whooped!!

More to come!
