There was a time when you told folks of your upcoming gig in Ahoghill, and the reaction would either be disbelief, or sniggering.....but all that has changed!

This Saturday 14th November we play the Diamond Bar, Ahoghill - which over the last few years has become one of the finest Rock gigs in Ireland, and a much sought after venue for rock bands far and wide.

It's a double-..headliner with excellent southern outfit Jaded Sun, which means you'll get a full set of Pay*ola, plus a Jaded Sun show too! Basically the best of Irish melodic hard rock...North and South!

Ahoghill is a few miles outside Ballymena - if you've never been, Googlemap it or something, and get yer arse up there - 'cause it's a place that runs a rock night the way it should be done. The promoters there have done an amazing job. Doors open 8.30pm.

We're really looking forward to this one...it's a seriously good line-up....and we always love playing Hague's...a real old-school hot, sweaty rock'n'roll pub gig. Here's all the info...

SO:NI in Lisburn Presents....

A Hard Rockin' Halloween With...

PAY*OLA
BANDWAGON
THE DEAD PRESIDENTS
& Malaika (acoustic set)
HAGUE'S BAR, LISBURN (Chapel Hill)
Thursday 29th October
Doors 8.30pm, Admission £3.50
SO:NI in Lisburn on the last Thursday of every month!

Details:

The monthly SO:NI showcase gig nights in Hague’s Bar, Lisburn, continues to go from strength to strength, and the October show will feature as fine a rock line-up as you’ll see anywhere in Ireland this (or any other) year! The gig, as always on the last Thursday of the month, takes place at the Chapel Hill venue on Thursday 29th October.
Headliners Pay*ola are truly a N.I hard rock institution – consistently turning in high quality performances, and regularly releasing new original material – indeed the lads will be returning to the studio in the days after this show to complete work on their long-awaited second album. In between recording, Pay*ola had a busy and fruitful summer season, playing their first ever shows in Germany, Portugal and France, as well as visiting Scotland to play to their expanding following there on three separate occasions. At one festival show in northern France, the band’s frontman Phil was invited on stage by Status Quo bass player Rhino Edwards (playing with his other band Woodedz) to sing 2 Quo classics – Paper Plane & Break The Rules to a rapturous reception. Very much a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the lifelong Quo fan! Pay*ola promise an explosive performance at this hometown Lisburn show, and will be playing some brand new material from the album.

Second on the bill are the hugely talented Bandwagon – featuring virtuoso guitarist Phil Edgar, and a classic rock sound reminiscent of Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher, but given a fresh youthful sheen by this power-trio. The band’s growing live reputation has seen them hand-picked to support 2 of Ireland’s biggest rock acts – The Answer and Glyder in recent months.

Also on the bill are fast-rising new outfit The Dead Presidents – another trio bringing a funk and soul mix to the rock table – making music that will put a smile on the most jaded face. Fronted by the charismatic Matt Wilson (ex-Tizz Lizzy), and already featuring a clutch of potentially classic tunes – this band is one to watch.

Kicking off the evening will be Lisburn girl Malaika – marking her first ever SO:NI show with an exclusive acoustic performance. Doors on the night open at 8.30pm, and admission is only £3.50. All details on SO:NI gigs can be found at www.myspace.com/onesonimusic

All of the night’s bands will be recording exclusive tracks for a new SO:NI Lisburn compilation cd, to be released early in 2010. The CD will feature many of the acts to have played the showcase over the past 2 years, and is currently being recorded in the city’s Railway Studios.

So, after what was effectively a very rare "Summer Break" from gigging (Adam was exploring New Zealand), we got back on stage last Friday night in Dungannon......not a show that will go down as a classic, but was good to shake off some of the rust!

We return to Manor Park Studios this Wed/Thurs/Fri to start laying sown tracks for the final 4 songs for Pay*ola album number 2 - which we hope to release soon. We had 7 or 8 tunes rehearsed to studio standard, and ended up taking a vote on which 4 to go for - the tracks which won through are Blindside, O Girl!, The Battle and Hallelujiah Town (though hopefully the other 3 will still make an appearance at some stage!). Can't wait to work with our long term producer Neal Calderwood again, and to get these songs out into the big bad world.....there's a good mix there from full on pounding hard rock, to melodic power-pop, to a more rootsy feel.

Obviously we intend to tour loads to promote the album, but in the meantime we'll still be playing some select shows, 'caise basically not gigging stinks! We're back in Scotland on Sunday 30th August for the Rock The Rovers festival in Kirkcaldy (we played last year and were immediately invited back - fair play to 'em!), play a big Belfast show on Fri 18th September in the Spring & Airbrake as guests to tribute AC?DC, and play our first ever shows in France in late September...something we're very excited about.

Keep checking back for more dates to be added, and we'll get the new music up here when it sounds as rocking as we can make it. See y'all soon! - Phil

Ok -just under 4 weeks to go. Time to start shoving this one down yer throats!

Last June we put together & headlined the first Summer Rocks show in the Belfast Empire, and had an absolute blast with it - so much so that we're doing it again, with another top class support line-up in tow. Here's yer basics....

SO:NI presents....
SUMMER ROCKS 2!

PAY*OLA
MILLION DOLLAR RELOAD
TAKE THE FIFTH
JACKKNIFE

EMPIRE MUSIC HALL, BELFAST (Botanic Avenue)
THURSDAY 18TH JUNE '09
Door 8.30pm, admission £5

This is gonna be one hell of a night - and one of very few summer dates for Pay*ola - our other big plan for the summer being the completion of album no.2 (plus Nicky has a "new arrival" to contend with!).

The support line-up is one of the best we've ever assembled. Million Dollar Reload are a superb rock'n'roill oufit doing a lot of good things at the moment - indeed, they will be just back from performing at the Download festival at the time of this show. Take The Fifth are a new band with a fine vintage on the N.I music scene, featuring ex-members of Ashanti (one of my favourite N.I bnds ever), The Defects, Junkmasters, Triple X and Salvador. Their songs are class. Jackknife are pure, entertaining AC/DC-esque hard rock, delivered with a lot o' charisma and humour.

Stick it in yer diaries, and don't be missing it....wherever you are in the world! Oh - and book the following morning off work!

By the way - if ye haven't got the Colour Red E.P yet - it's available to download at iTunes, Amazon mp3, eMusic and a bunch of other sites. Just search "payola colour red"

Current mood:  relaxed
This gig has become very much a tradition in the Pay*ola calendar - and with the North West 200 being the biggest sporting event in Ireland, it's a brilliant weekend to play on the beautiful north coast....

An Evening of Rock'n'Roll with.....
PAY*OLA
& guests Angus

The Retro Bar, Portrush (Main St.)
Saturday 16th May

(doors are open for all-day drinking....but music will kick off after 9pm!! -no worries about tickets either, it's pay at door)

We've done this show for about the past 6 years, and it's always a blast - a real old school rock'n'roll show....hot, sweaty and loud - and it will feature our full-length setlist.

This will also be our last gig for over a month, as Nicky has his 2nd kid on the way at the end of May...virile chap that he is.....and he's getting a wee bit of paternity leave to get used to not sleeping! The next gig will be the Summer Rocks 2 show in the Empire Music Hall, Belfast on Thursday 18th June - and that'll be a very special one. Stay tuned for more details...this will get it's own blog soon!

"McVention" is a great event organised by Scottish Quo fans to celebrate their favourite band, and also to give some acts like ourselves some fantastic exposure. We've been invited to play as a direct result of having supported Quo 5 times, and we have always had a very good releationship with the dedicated Quo fans.

I think this event may be sold out, or close to it - but email fitzpatrick208@aol.com for details.

The new Pay*ola E.P is now available for download at iTunes / Amazon mp3 and other sites - search "payola colour red"

X-Com are a band made up of former/current members of the legendary Bad Company - in fact they toured as Bad Company last year, when we supported them in the Empire in May. They are currently under the X-COM banner due to legal wranglings with Paul Rodgers....but this ain't a "tribute" act by any stretch. Most notably they feature founder member Mick Ralphs...a guy who is basically rock royalty, having written " Can't Get Enough", and who was also a founder member of Mott The Hoople. Singer Robert Hart also fronted the band through most of the '80s. The drummer happens to be Harry from Thunder! Here's loads more info on the band:

An excellent live band playing brilliant songs. Last year was a blast - I heartily recommend this show!

SO:NI Presents...

PAY*OLA
PalMal
Invinyl

Hague's Bar, Lisburn (Chapel Hill)
Thursday 30th April
Doors 8.30pm, admission £3.50

The monthly SO:NI (Sounds of Northern Ireland) night at Hague's Bar, Lisburn returns with another strong line-up on Thursday 30th April.

Headlining are N.I rock institution Pay*ola, currently touring their "Colour Red" E.P, and fresh from headlining the "Anlassen" festival in Frankfurt, Germany - where they played to over 3000 rock fans and made many new friends. The band continue to build their impressive live reputation, and 2 days after the Lisburn show will play support to British rock legends Bad Company for the second time. The band's new songs can be heard at http://www.myspace.com/payolarock

Second on the bill are Lisburn outift PalMal, who have been building a fine live following of late, due to their energetic and passionate shows. The boys recently released their debut E.P "Processed Life".

Opening the bill will be the excellent and much missed Invinyl - returning from a long break from the live scene with a brand new line-up and newly written tunes. Johnny and Elliott from the band have played a couple of very well received acoustic sets at the SO:NI showcases in Lisburn, and it promises to be a truly memorable occasion when the band re-launch themselves in Hague's in front of a home-town crowd.

The Lisburn SO:NI showcases, which take place on the last Thursday of every month, have now been running successfully for almost a year and a half, and have proved there is a great audience for original live music in the city. Long may it continue! Doors will open at 8.30pm, and admission is only £3.50. All info on SO:NI shows is available at www.myspace.com/onesonimusic

Well they say good things come in threes - and this could well be proof of it....
Next week, on Saturday 18th April, Pay*ola decamp to Dublin to see a gig which defines the phrase "long awaited" - AC/DC at the 02 Arena. With our aul' muckers in The Answer supporting too! (quite a difference fRom opening for Pay*ola at the Hard Rock Cafe many moons ago!). Should be a seriously rocking evening...with a few drinkies afterwards no doubt. And this is where it gets fun...
We shall then remove ourselves to Dublin Airport, try & get some sleep (some hope), meet up with Dougie the Gimp, our trusty main man, and hop on the 7am flight to Frankfurt to play our first ever German show...in fact our first in mainland Europe - at the Anlassen Festival in Gelnhausen near Frankfurt on the Sunday afternoon. (more info on this show below). We spend a total of 10 hours in Germany, and fly back to Dublin on the Sunday night - then make our way back Belfast-ward.
And as sods law has dictated - the very next day 2 good friends & supporters of ours are getting married. And who's playing at the reception?? You guessed it. This going to be one of the stranger Pay*ola shows in our history (though we did crank out a set at Nicky's sister Claires's wedding reception last year.....and Nick and myself actually sang 2 Beatles songs in the church at our ex-drummer James' wedding. Talk about shitting ourselves!) - though we've been told to just do what we normally do...and Sarah and Gee have been coming to watch us since the "Felix E.P" era....friggin' 2001(!)...so they know what to expect!
I don't imagine we'll be feeling too hot on the Tuesday.
Here's more info on the Anlasses Festival - and massive thanks to our German promoter Helen for making this happen...Phil
