Thursday, November 10, 2005 LA MUSIC AWARDS In a story typical of the struggling indie acts gathered for the evening, the members of the oddly spelled Faceles hold down day jobs, including construction engineer, forensics lab technician and koi pond minder. Also typically, only the band's drummer, James Rinehart, is making a living playing music - drummers are always in demand, unlike guitarists and bass players. "It means so much to us to be recognized in one of the world's music capitals," was echoed in the packed backstage area, which is actually in the basement of the club. "We are a very raw rock band and this gives us a lot of hope for the future." Faceles plays about 50 shows a year throughout the state and is now working on an album after receiving positive feedback from the three-song demo tape the band uses to score gigs at clubs that haven't booked them previously. In January, the group is traveling to Utah for a show at the Sundance film festival followed by a gig at the Winter X Games in Aspen. "In three years, we've gone from the garage to the main stage," said Faceles manager Skip Seip, who describes himself with a smile as a brother, father, therapist, baby sitter and banker for the band. Seip first met Baca when the singer-guitarist worked at a Carlsbad 7-Eleven and he would buy coffee from the musician. "One day he told me he was putting a band together and I checked them out," Seip said. "I'm here for the long haul. The sound is there and the talent speaks for itself. After Faceles rocked hundreds at the awards show, the band packed their equipment and toweled off downstairs. "This is my life," said bassist Rob Crist, 25. "Music is my only major interest and the only thing I've really wanted to do since I was a little kid." The band members gave off a feeling of togetherness both on and offstage, and it was clear the four musicians are friends above all. "This means all the blood and sweat is finally paying off," said Faceles guitarist Mark Reveles, 23, as he held the L.A. Music Awards plaque for the year's best indie hard rock band of 2005. "It's better than money - it means we're getting through to people. It's what I've been put here for." Contacts for the band NSD Productions, Inc 310-836-2700 office www.nsdproductions.com
