"Bryan Cherry Band's second album opens with the wonderfully descriptive "Spiderwebs." It may sound simple, but it spins a web of complexity inspired by the psychedelic band Love. Take the word "freedom" out of the lyrics and it would be a totally successful song. Nobody knows what that abstract word means, yet everybody thinks they do. Songwriting must be concrete.

The title track's strong riff and awesome vocal also bear comparison to Love with its funky but flipped Arthur Lee style. Several songs are tedious on record, though probably not in concert. With "The Raven," we are back on an energy haul. The exquisite vocal falls somewhere between really singing and really not, a place of dramatic power. This is not roots rock as noted in the band promo, but more like rock pulling at roots—and it works with a vengeance. Mike Hoffmann's production captures real textures and honest performances. Were it not for several songs that wander without focus, we would have a unique entry for post-psychedelic driving out on the funky highway."
