Ladies, gentlemen, and undecided ...

I've been remodeling my website. It's still a bit skeletal, and may have a
few quirks and bumps, but I'm pretty pleased with it nonetheless. Please
visit andrubemis.com .

I'll be in Mexico City this week for a few shows and warmer weather. If you
happen to lose yerself that direction, please visit me.

Otherwise, visit me in southwest Michigan upon my return.

More shows coming up. Also a new album. Keep yer ears open.

Much love,

Andru

Once upon a brilliant day I moved m'computer and my maps and my Amtrak
national timetable to a wee table at a theatre in mah town. From this spot
I wuz to plan mah trips and travails fer the coming year. But this small
world is forever new, and today m'computer is rested upon a much larger
table at this same theatre under a different name and a fresh beginning,
and I have a title. And that title is "gen'rul man-uh-jer." Which means
that now I sweep and mop and paint and fix and move and sort and try my
best with the help of a few good friends to make this holey boat fit to
float its ownself so's I can once again flip mah thumb to the highway an'
mah feet to the road to find m'way to you.

To those many o' you who've recently written without response, I apologize.
I've been mostly away from the internet for almost two months, but I'm back
online now and promise I will write soon. And to you who'd like to hear me
play in yer town, please don't lose faith yet. I'm not planning any long
tours for several months, at least, but I'll still go most anywhere fer a
hun'red bucks and a train ticket (which you might possibly find here:
http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak/WeeklySpecials ). All's ya gotta do is
ask.

In the meantime, I intend to make the most of my time here at home in
writin', practicin' the fiddle and thinkin' on recording my fourth album,
which I might unleash sometime in 2008. I also hope to make vast quantities
of soup to share with you travelers and wanderers who find yerselves in my
small southwestern corner of Michigan.

Lest you fear that I'm totally out of commission, here's wot's coming up.
More shows are on the way, so keep a watchful eye on :

(Dunno why ye're getting this quite infrequent, occasionally heartfelt, yet terribly long newsletter? Perhaps you met a banjo player at some time who strong-armed you into putting yer email address in his leetle black book. You can get him back by deleting this message, or by clicking the 'unsubscribe' link at the bottom of this email, or you may simply reply to this message and tell him as much. There will be no hard feelings. Warmly -- Andru)

TABLE O' CONTENSE

- 1. a CONTEST! with a great reward
- 2. a bit o' TRAVELIN' and upcomin' shows
- 3. a bit o' LISTENIN' 'bout my leetle house on the ray-dee-oh
- 4. a bit o' WRITIN' on birthdays and departed friends
- 5. a note 'bout yer email address and list subscription
__________

1. CONTEST!

Here it finally is. In the past three years on the train, I've amassed a heap of frequent train travelin' points. But I spend too much time on the train already. So I'm giving away a free, round trip, coach-class train trip for one person to anywhere in the United States. And hopefully we'll do some good in the process. Here are the details:

Four years ago, I bought my first monthly North American Rail Passes to take the train to shows throughout the US and Canada. At the time, the rail pass was a reasonably-priced alternative to driving myself, and the environmental and physical advantages of touring by train were obvious. Since then, however, the price of the pass has steadily increased, and the train now costs me a couple hundred dollars per month more than it did in 2003. Though the increased ticket prices haven't stopped me from touring by train, they have affected the frequency of my train-only national tours, and I doubt I would've considered the monthly pass to be an affordable touring option had it cost so much when I started.

I understand that Amtrak has had to raise its ticket prices in response to rising fuel costs, increased demand, and to governmental pressure to become entirely self-supporting (which is absurd, considering the many billions of federal tax dollars spent every year on highways and airports). But I believe enough in national passenger trains and regional public transit to spend 3-4 months a year and a third of my income on them. And though I and my ilk may never be rich nor famous like Arlo Guthrie (who made a much-publicized week-long train trip from Chicago to New Orleans a couple years ago), I think it's time Amtrak recognizes the potential benefits of marketing itself to independent performers and musicians like myself who make a living of regular long-distance travel and would like a responsible and practical alternative to driving ourselves.

Therefore, the goal of this contest is to convince Amtrak to offer a significantly reduced-fare monthly or seasonal national train pass specifically for performing artists and musicians on tour. The rules of the contest are quite simple:
___

On June 1, 2007, I'll randomly draw a name and will give one lucky winner a free long-distance round-trip train ticket to anywhere in the United States. Each person has two opportunities to have their name added to the drawing, plus one bonus opportunity. I'll enter your name once for emailing a short message to Amtrak, and once again for copying the same message to the National Association of Rail Passengers. If I believe your note is especially convincing or well-done, I'll reward you with one bonus addition to the drawing. So each person can be entered up to three times.

- 1) Visit this link: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/ContactUs . Select "Schedules/Promotions" as yer message subject, and be sure to include your contact information. Use the message box to tell the friendly folks at Amtrak how much you like it when the train brings yer favorite banjo player to town, and how you wish many more of yer favorite performers would tour by train. Write what you wish, and make yer message as short or long as you like.

- 2) Send the same message to the National Association of Rail Passengers (NARP): narp@narprail.org

- 3) IMPORTANT!! Forward all replies from Amtrak and/or NARP to my email address: andru@andrubemis.com . If you don't follow this step, I won't know to enter your name in the drawing for the free train trip. Make sure I get those replies before June 1st!
___

That's all there is to it. Simple, eh? :)

Feel free to forward this contest to any other friends who'd like a free train trip or musicians who might consider touring by train in the future. Together, we just may succeed in making Amtrak affordable for many more artists and musicians like myself. If you have any questions, comments or great ideas, please don't hesitate to email me: andru@andrubemis.com

3. LISTENIN'

My small house was recently featured in the Environment Report on public radio. Fer those of you who didn't catch it the first time 'round, you can hear me talk and play a bit o' banjo here:

__________

4. WRITIN'

Dear friends,

I write from western Washington state, where the buses and trains are plentiful and the fares affordable. I've completed a week of shows in Washington, and now am continuing on the train down the coast through Oregon to California, then across the continent for shows in Nevada, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Maryland. And of course I'm draggin' my banjar behind me.

I turned twenty-nine for the first time a couple weeks ago. Many sincere thanks are due to the Corn Fed Girls - http://myspace.com/thecornfedgirls - the Floorbirds - http://myspace.com/thefloorbirds - Jack Torrey, and to all the dear friends who traveled from far and near to South Haven to make my birthday so very special this year. My mother turned twenty-nine three or four years in a row, if I remember correctly. I sure hope my twenty-ninth is a good year, seeing as how fate and family history may force me to relive it next year. And the next. And perhaps one or two more after that.

Two close friends of mine died in the past year.

Jim lived in the country. He made coffee which was dark and thick, and drank it like a rundown engine drinks motor oil. In the three or four years that I knew Jim, he spoke often of a woman named Nicholle, whom he'd last seen 15 years ago. His trailer was littered with drawings of what life would be like when Nicholle returned ..... Jim and Nicholle dancing; Jim and Nicholle on the town; Jim driving his Russian motorcycle with Nicholle in the sidecar or holding tight on the back seat; plans for the house Jim would build for Nicholle of the concrete and stones he'd collected in huge piles throughout the yard. I promised to be the best man at the wedding when Nicholle returned, as he knew she would. Jim loved flowers and evergreens, his dog Bullet, and the mottled cat with kittens who lived on his porch, as well as vintage military uniforms, motorcycles, cars with suicide doors, the movie "Roadhouse," and anything from his great-grandfather's native Germany. He talked with God under his breath, spoke of visions of heaven and angels, and posted prayers for strength and health on every blank space throughout his trailer. Early July, 2006, Jim died of pneumonia after moving to Arkansas to live near his mother.

Joey was 23, and he lived in town. He came often to my house for coffee with cinnamon and to listen to records. Sometimes he'd bring a bottle of wine, and we'd play chess. Joey always won. I'd like to blame it on the wine, but I'm not one to whine. Joey wrote brilliant poems. Many were funny; poems about fellas with fish on their heads, and ice cream trucks and bicycles. He wrote beautiful sonnets for a Russian singer named Christref, with whom he was in love, but whom he'd never met. He'd email his latest poetry to me as I traveled. In the last three months of his life, Joey sent me at least a dozen new poems ....

"I saw a man, he had a hat he wasn't even wearing
instead he wore upon his head a slimy, smelly herring
there was no point, but need there be
what should the man be wearing?
why must you ask, that's such a task
its daring wearing herring."

"Autumn winds howl in hurry
Whistling songs with a voice
Such haunting voice of fury
And now it's time to take my choice
as like requests for the radio
Lets choose one song to start
T'was a song that made me so
in love with your sweet heart
We shall dance in the coolness
of this fresh autumn breeze
Coming in with the fullness
of the moon overseas
What a pleasant thing to hear, what a pleasant time of year
To be in love with you, oh my dear, oh my dear."

Here's to Jim and Joey. And to the rest of us who have yet to join 'em.

From yer friend, the banjo player --

Andru

http://glrc.org/story.php3?story_id=3358 - Public Radio interview with Andru Bemis about living in a tiny house.
Friday, January 05, 2007

Category: Music
It's seven years after the millenium, and several facts have come to my attention:

a)   'Away In A Manger' can be improved by replacing "Lord Jesus" with "lone ranger."

b)   December 25 should henceforth be called "Giftmas" so as not to offend those of the Christian faith.

c)   Four new houses have been built on my block since January 2006. I worry a bit that a tractor might disorient itself and munch my leetle shack next. So I spend my days on the front porch with a shotgun and a menacing scowl. I'm all outta shells, but the machines don't know this.

d)   I have a new fiddle. But it's old.

e)   A car in the road will stop for another car in the road if the other car in the road is stopped to make a turn. But a car in the road will honk at a bicycle in the road if the bicycle is stopped to make a turn. Same goes fer bicycles in parking spaces and driveways.

f)   Replace "bicycle" with "pedestrian."

g)   It's that time again. You know what I'm talking about .... where the kid with the banjo and the big hat comes to your town to honk at cars.
