WHR have called it a day. Nothing malicious or trivial, just too much hard work for very little return.

Thanks for your support, we're still wearing it.

On the 4th May Warning! Heat Ray! Drop a free three track EP right out of Tooting and into your ear holes. The five piece make a kind of post-punk-rock-indie-pop-electronic sound with epic vocals and they even go a little dubbed out in places too. They have been getting recognition from people like Mr Scruff and Rob Da Bank for their single Spit It Out, which was a moving atmospheric electronica infused number with speech samples and melancholic vocals.

The 3 Track EP takes Warning! Heat Ray! Into a more rock influenced territory. ‘Beat Goes On’ opens things up with a tight bass, subtle electronics that flash, bubble and build the tension before the big beats come in and they rock out like a more spacious indie version of Queens of the Stone Age or something, it’s a tight little number and kicks things off in style.

Track two of three ‘My Quite Riot’ screeches as feedback loops and funky drums are played under a subtle and dark electronic orchestra and the vocals kick in to make this one a bit of an epic that wouldn’t feel to out of place in a dark side Bond movie set sometime in the 80’s, but in a good way this is a definite highlight especially when they get rocking out.

The final track is the dubwise ‘Permanent Machine’ with chugging harpsichord style riffs and dubbed out riddims. Guitars, electronics and effects really bring out the smoky vibes of the track; it’s a wicked juxtaposition of rock and dub that manages to stay far away from the ska clichés by keeping it well post-punk-electronic-rock. Plus the strong vocals really add an extra dimension.

Warning! Heat Ray! Have created a strong EP full of ideas and songs that both engage and make for an enjoyable listen.

After a 12 hour Tuesday, mostly spent with the very brilliant Pat Collier at Perry Vale (see top friends), we now have a representative sound of Warning! Heat Ray! as we are now.

We're all very pleased with how the tracks sound, and they will be up here for you listening pleasure within the next few days. We suspect you'll be surprised.

Final tracklisting is:

The beat goes on
Permanent Machine
My quiet riot

Clocking in at 11mins.

Next steps are to get some CDs burned and the PR ready. And we might get to eat some Easter eggs too.

Word!

Economic meltdown. Nice. We're working pretty much flat out at the moment, and it aint half taking its toll. Tonight, we've another four hour rehearsal so we're ready for tomorrow's marathon nine hour recording session. Come Friday, we're off back to Metropolis to see Noel and get tomorrow's product mastered.

In terms of what it'll be: well we're unsure. We think, it's going to be:

My Quiet Riot
Beat goes on
Permanent Machine

Yes, there is a new song in there - one that no-one's heard before. Well, no-one but us. Tis pretty good too (but, yeah, we would say that).

All three (or however many) will go up for free download as a 128k MP3, or you can pay a little extra for higher quality (you can decide how much, too). So, we're trying out a few new things. We've had to turn down a few gigs, sadly, as the summer season approaches - but we are hoping to adjust as soon as festival season is out of the way.

Speaking of which, you can buy Cornbury tickets now, but there is also the possibility of us appearing at one (or maybe two) more festivals. Unconfirmed as yet, but we'll let you know as soon as we do.

Yes, I didn't expect to write that word for some time. After spending most of last year facing a computer screen, looking at blocks of audio - recording was the last thing on my mind for 2009. Nevertheless, the band have a new take on the 2008 material. We also have a slew of new material.

So, within the first two weeks of April, Warning! Heat Ray! are going to be heading into Perry Vale Studios to record as live, with minimal overdubs. For those of you who've seen us live, you'll know that it's a different sound to the bedroom recordings.

So, it makes sense to get some recordings that are more reoresentative of how we sound - now. They'll be up here as soon as they're ready and available for download.

Terribly excited about tonight's gig at the O2 Islington Academy, and Time Out have marked it as their Critics' Choice (FTW!)

We had a fun afternoon yesterday at TopMan, on Oxford Street with  exquisitely dressed designers Marcus and Brett helping us out with some serious fashion advice
.

Massive thanks to them and TM for kitting us out with some wicked gear. Pictures to follow.

In other news, some of the
Cornbury Festival lineup has been announced. Riverside stage tbc - but that should be where we'll be, unless the Sugababes drop out...

So, we're tearing through 2009 pretty quickly - March is only two days away. Being prefectly honest, it's been a tough couple of months interspersed with some joyous moments! I've started to keep my own blog here, so I can use this area more for stuff solely about the band.

So, yes - the gig in Feb went really well. And now we're headlining the Islington Academy 2 on March 14th. Considine's band pulled out - clearly they simply couldn't take the pressure...

We're all set to record a live EP soon - we're working towards it. We'll be working with a good producer and, if it turns out like we hope it will, it'll be released for public consumation.

More gig dates are in the offing and we're just firming dates up across London. There is the possibility of more festival dates too - so watch out for them.

OK - enough for now. Time to get back to 'The Wire'.

W!HR! x

John Martyn passed away today. I'll never forget the first time I heard 'May you never'. I was 18 and round at Rob's dad's place. He had a small stereo underneath the TV on a shelf in the front room, and we used to gather there when bunking off college to smoke fags and play Street Fighter. I remember the house had wood floors, which was great when we were skinning up - we could see where and what we had dropped.

We were pretty high off our latest score from Bearwood, and Rob was laid back on the colourful futon. The smoke was thick in the air and it stuck to my sweaty face. I suspect we were both in our para-boots with our leather jackets folded up on the table or just dumped, crumpled on the floor. Both of us were undoubtedly sporting heavy metal band t-shirts and plaid shirts.

Rob always liked to heighten the mood at times like this, trying to introduce his co-stoner to something new. I was drinking my tea; I think it was autumn or winter outside and the windows were all steamed up. He suddenly got up from the futon and went over to the stereo rummaging through some CDs on the floor. He played me John Martyn's 'May you never'.  It was a moment of connection - it was beautiful. I've never forgotten the song - nor the influence he exerted on guitarists the world over. Sadly, his inspiration, Davy Graham, died late last year. And now John has gone to join him and Nick Drake for one hell of a folk jam.

That'll be a priceless show.

Here's Will Hodkinson's
obituary to the man.
