THE WIGHT ALBUM
PhotobucketPhotobucket

It gives us great pleasure, joy, relief to announce that we have finally, from right out of the blue, just when we thought there was a chance it would never happen, the unexpected results of a recording made at a local charity gig have been made into a full length live album. Our very 1st!
The Wight album recorded at Wightfest 09 and mixed at Chancer H.Q (4sitemusic) will be available exclusively at this years Bestival appearance. You will also be able to order soon online.

The band feel this is a fitting culmination of all the struggles and efforts we have been through in keeping the vibe going, on an independent mission to record music we like, untampered with & self-financed.

Great pictures by our loyal friend Roger Regular, aswell as a few more from others are in our pics section.

If your checking this, thank you for your interest, thanks to those that have kept our spirits up through some of the darker valleys over the past 3 years.

This is just a beginning, the live breakthrough in recording has inspired us greatly and we're looking forward to really get down to it with even more belief.

A band of brothers in triumph.

Love to the Big Chancer family, much love & respect to all the musical brothers & sisters out there. Keep them chances alive.

If your on facebook, tap in The Chancers, find the fan page and listen to a preview of the whole album. Be sure to check us at The Bestival if your there, 5.15, Saturday - Bandstand Stage

To get into the Bestival free, they sent an mp3 to a Rizla competition after not being selected to take part in the local (Isle of Wight) Bestival competition. It was a last chance entry.......

To their own amazement, they won the accolade of being UK's most inspired unsigned band thanks to BBC Radio 1's Rob Da Bank. This meant they got into the Bestival and performed at the Rizla Arena hosted by The Bays. This resulted in being asked back to perform the Rizla DJ arena the following year along with Don Letts, Terry Hall, Andy Votel, Pete Fowler, Tim Love Lee, Jim Stanton & James Baillie. They also managed get some free Rizla clothing. Instead of leaving the Island, The Chancers turned it on for thousands of festival goers from all over the world.

SO SINCE? Within that year, The Chancers tried hard to come together and record. After a breeze-block stable they rented became too cold, the guys hired out Haylands farm community hall for a weekend to create more tunage.

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Results were encouraging but slow, so it was welcome news when The Bee's invited The Chancers to come in and lay down some tracks at their own special recording studio's.
Soon followed top local Producer (of 'Big brother' theme tune fame) Andy Gray who also invited them to lay down a song he had heard performed live at a local gig. (Ryde Theatre)

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

They have had some fantastic and inspirational support slots including, The Pea's, New Master Sounds, Scratch Perverts, Cuban Brothers & Roy (THE VIBE) Ayers.

They have been honoured enough to be joined live at times by special guests including fellow Isle of Wighters Tim Parkin, all rounder and trumpeteer with Mercury nominated band The Bee's & also Hev McCallum of NME endorsed band "Hugo Frusslinky" gracing the band with flute. Mike Holdcroft & Denzel have also bolstered the ever growing, inter-changing brass section.

Shaking hands with The Beastie Boys, Getting Soul 2 Soul to play the island, Dj-ijng for Rizla as The Invisible Players, a Chancer invited to play onstage with soul singing sensation Jhelisa Anderson aswell as their first London gig are the other highlights that have come the guys way. 2 appearances at 2008's Isle of Wight Festival have seen the bigger sound go live and the lads shaking up a dormant scene for independant Island bands.

Now, The Chancers are approaching the next phase having set-up their own recording studio. The culmination of their pursuits has led to a self-made live album. Their only ongoing aim is to complete the dream album, unrestricted or anti-vibed by the perils of a confused music industry or themselves.

Chances in life for people. Keep on Keepin on, Peace out.

More chances for The Chancers Isle of Wight festival Review

Members of popular Isle of Wight Soul/Funk outfit The Chancers had a busy time at this years Isle of Wight Festival. Playing to a packed Hipshaker tent with their largest ensemble yet, they delighted the audience to tracks from their long awaited self-financed, debut album.

The band consisted of many Isle of Wight music contributers. Chris Phillips on drums also teaches music at Medina High School, Chris Horne on guitar, Murray Clack ..boards, Jack Henson on Vocals/Guitar & Rick Stanbridge on bass & vocals.

After playing the previous night again at Hipshaker in another successful Island band, The Apple Beatles AND performing the Kashmir tent as The Gypsy Ladyland Experience, performing classic Hendrix, Rick found himself playing 4 times over the weekend as The Chancers were invited to play The Kashmir aswell. "I thought I may have had the record for most performances in different bands in the history of the festival but on talking to a few other Island musicians it seems that someone from Platform 1 may have pipped me!" he laughed.

They were joined on stage by a 3 part brass section that included The Bee's all-rounder Tim Parkin on trumpet, Denzel who hosts open mic nights at the High Park Tavern in Ryde every other wednesday on Alto Sax, Seaview raised Mike Holdcroft on Tenor. Special guest on flute was Hev McCallum from another Island favourite and Bestival 07 Competition winners Hugo Frusslinky.

It's a good time for The Chancers, after Rob Da Bank & Rizla announced them UK's most Inpsired Unsigned Band in 2006, the guys have supported The Cuban Brothers, Roy Ayers and The New Master Sounds, gone about recording their own album at the same time as assisting other bands from the Island in the form of The Development Suite. They have been tirelessly campaigning to keep Ryde Theatre open.
www.myspace.com/thedevelopmentsuite

It's been a frustrating wait at times for the guys but they are now just about to get their own dedicated rehearsal place, which should speed up the final part of album completion. 2 tracks from their album have already been included on an Independant UK Brit Flick comedy 'The Limelight' starring channel 4 star Ricky Grover.

'Monkey' (Could We Find?) has also just been put on the Ventnor Skatepark charity CD transitions 1 featuring a whole host of IOW talent. Check out www.wight-trash.com for details.

An unexpected visit from IW Festival & SOLO promoter John Giddings also has sparked interest. He personally asked for a demo after seeing 2 of The Chancers perform at a local bar a week before the festival.

'That's 2 pretty big endorsements but we are still focused on having something finished in whatever time it takes rather than chasing things prematurely. We have recorded ourselves, been in The Bee's studio for a few and recorded a tune at Andy Gray's studio. Finding the space, time and financial support are always the obstacles but we have never given up trying to create something that sounds accomplished and that represents the best we can give. It's the best time ever so far for local original music to shine on the whole world.' said a member of the band.

Who knows what's ahead but they are definetly a right bunch of chancers! check them out on the world wide web at www.myspace.com/thechancersiow

You can catch them soon at Ryde Regatta on Ryde Seafront (Saturday 5th July) or at this years Bestival at Robin Hill (4-6th September). There are also rumours of more appearances so keep your eyes peeled.

Getting back on track.....
January 11, 2008 - Friday
by Stan Robinio

When real music lovers get together, especially ones with a true love and feel, with talents that have already been through the treadmill of the industry, trying to avoid inflated ego's, manufactured talent and false economies, the results are often good . Mix this into the pot....A variety of influences from the greatest, most well respected artists ever to walk this planet, largely organic & classic recording techniques but using the modern aids that allow a non-financed band like The Chancers, the freedom to journey on their musical quests. If all comes out as expected, you'll have......The Chancers.

Based on the creative hotbed that is the Isle of Wight, Hailing from the same scene as The Bee's, Jackson Analogue and the Motion Pictures. The Chancers are a band that are forfilling their aims to deliver Top Quality Songs with genuine delivery and a feel like it could have been recorded 30/40 years ago. Infact, timelessness is their mission of attainment. The Chancers songs are soon to be featured in the feature film 'The Limelight' (www.thecreativefilmcompany.webeden.co.uk)

Due for general release in 2007. In the meantime, it is The Chancers main mission to complete their debut album aswell as boosting the local music vibe & chances as much as possible. Check out The progression Sessions@Ryde Theatre.

Please let us know what you think of The developing Chancers music recordings as we feel they are a very special bunch of characters that you will definately be hearing more about in the near future.

Recent recordings, home made, in The Bee's studio and some mix/overdub work with Andy Gray means that there should be an interesting 1st album. Who knows where it takes us?

If you have any thoughts about The Chancers and their sound please do not hesitate to contact us. If you like them also visit their not so updated Website with more links & info, aswell as a shout out from Radio 1's Rob Da Bank. @ www.thechancers.webeden.co.uk

Many Thanks for your time and interest up till now.

Thanks Stan for the nice write up... These are the demo's & works in progress!
Just put em up to take a chance. We're just vessels where music pours from our life & souls. Our greatest influences celebrated & honoured in our own quest for musical fulfillment. Keeping music in our life.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketHere follows correspondance regards our beautiful bus after recieving notice that it was to be dumped....Witness the people victory. heheheh

From Us:
I am appalled that I should be woken up early AM on a suturday to recieve a letter about an abandoned vehicle.

I am the keeper, the vehicle is fully taxed/insured and if I choose to have that vehicle parked on a public road then I believe that is within my human rights to do so.

So after charging me 3 tickets for being parked in a controlled parking zone...you now want to threaten me with prison for moving it?

I imagine a vehicle would not be abandoned if it was in a parking zone? That way you could issue more penalty charges before threatening to destroy & charge.

Absolutely ridiculous. May I prosecute you for criminal damage if you take it without my consent?

The vehicle is not abandoned! All I have recieved is a threat. It does not state how long I may have to move the vehicle..I am hoping that by replying you can now enter into your records that someone has come forth as owner of the vehicle. Therefore, it is not neccessarry for your abandoned vehicle officer to have it removed.

I look forward to hearing your advice on the matter.

Council Reply:
Thank you for your email which has been forwarded to me for reply.

Your vehicle was reported to us as possibly abandoned and the authority has a statutory duty to investigate all such reports. The letter you received is also a statutory requirement giving vehicle owners notice of the council's intention to remove said vehicle if it is in fact abandoned. Your vehicle has remained in the same location for approximately 5 weeks with a note on the front seat saying that it had broken down, the note dated 16th September. As you do not live in the vicinity of where the vehicle is parked, it was decided that it had in fact been abandoned and the required notice placed on your vehicle and the letter sent to you at the address provided by the DVLA. It is also a statutory requirement that these letters are sent out by recorded delivery, and unfortunately the council has no powers over the time of their delivery.

With regards to your comments about whether these actions would have been taken if you were parked in a controlled parking zone, I can confirm that the council does not discriminate between vehicles parked in designated parking areas or on the main road if they are believed to be abandoned.

As you have now contacted the council and advised us that the vehicle is not abandoned, I can confirm that no further action will be taken.

I trust that this has clarified the situation for you, but if you wish to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

NB: We did apologise after realising that indeed the broken down note was still in the window but still...Had to clarify what rights we still have left in the world. ;O)

Sadly the Chancer bus will be no more...After being screwed over by local garage, it's time to hunt down a new campaign vehicle.

Rizla Invisible Players at Bestival

Freshly washed down from the giant mud bath party that was the Connect Festival in Scotland, the van travelled from the serene shores of Loch Fyne down to the sunny Isle of Wight for its last festival appearance of the year at Bestival.

Rizla caused a stir in the 24 hour village at Bestival last year with the Blue Pavilion so big things were expected for the new look 'Rizla Arena' complete with musical van, tiered dance floor and a mouth watering line-up.

In a new location opposite the Bollywood Bar and next to the Brothers Cider tent, we were right in the thick of it.

The rain had been left behind in Scotland and the whole arena looked all sparkly again in the warm sunshine of Friday morning.

James Baillie kicked things off with some ambient grooves and cosmic disco, before the arrival of local band The Chancers, winners of the Rizla unsigned competition last year, who took to the decks to play a wide selection of tunes from ska to reggae to funk to some classic rock and roll. The local crowd flooded the arena to support their boys and a set a smiley precedent for the weekend.

As the sun moved to the other side of the field, Stuart Patterson turned up the heat in the arena with a great set before Ska legend Terry Hall from The Specials took over to rock the first night, attracting a big crowd which saw the heaving dancefloor quickly expand beyond the front doors into the main field.

Saturday morning and those nursing sore heads made the most of the deck chairs, most sipping cups of tea and eating brekkie, a few brave souls drinking pear cider to kickstart their day. Saturday is always the main fancy dress day at the festival, which ensured an array of bizarre, imaginative and random characters in the arena fit for any cartoon, or cider-induced nightmare. (see pictures)

Andy Votel and Pete Fowler teamed up for their trademark eclectic set, in the attire of the classic English gentleman and duly entertained the arena with a massive selection of genres from ska to psychedelic rock.

Hands travelled skyward and feet upped their work-rate as electro funk god, Greg Wilson took over the honours and packed out the arena creating a party atmosphere reminiscent of Space in Ibiza. The crowd responded accordingly creating the effect of a turbulent sea of bizarrely-costumed party people, most definitely getting their 'groove' very much 'on'.

Tim Love Lee jumped in the van next and continued a great vibe with Maurice Fulton wrapping up Saturday with some spectacular house classics including Nitro Delux and Candi Staton.

As the sun warmed up on Sunday morning, James Baillie warmed up the Rizla arena with a smooth set, before the popular birthday boy Will Saul arrived with a lively entourage, who not only wrapped the van in tape reading 'Happy Birthday', but also presented him with cake complete with candles half way through his set.

Don Letts took over the controls in the afternoon and played a summer vibe selection of dub and reggae much to the delight of the crowd who got down and dirty.

Greg Wilson stepped up for his second set of the weekend and produced one of the truly golden moments of the festival, pumping out a blistering set that sent the huge crowd crescendoing towards the festival climax.

Jim Stanton from ever popular Horse Meat Disco took the reigns and rounded off the weekend, prolonging the vibe until a specially extended time of 1am as the organisers rewarded Rizla with an additional hour, probably due to the huge posse that had stayed at the arena for the best part of the day, Greg and Jim playing side by side for the last hour.

All in all an amazing weekend for everyone involved, the DJ's, the crew but most importantly the crowd.

Thanks from all at Rizla for supporting us this year and making the first year of the Rizla Invisible Players tour such a storming success, we've already started throwing ideas around as to how to upstage it next year - so watch this space..!
