GREETINGS!

My new video is here  Light Up Light Up featuring the amazing Jah Cure has been chosen as my debut single release and will be coming out in early 2010! I am really excited about this release and need to thank so many people for making it a possibility.

Originally we thought that the amazing Ras Kassa was going to be directing the music video, however this didn't end up working out so thinking we were screwed we had to find an alternative and fast! My talented sister Kyla who created the Music Video for 'Who Am I' last year pulled through, we managed to get her on a plane to Jamaica, source a crew and equipment from Kingston and within 5 days pull the project together with a huge amount of help from Darius Malik the producer and a lot of friends and family

I hope so much that you enjoy it, please help me spread the vibes... this is still a fully independent project and your support is essential to getting the message out there! I need you guys more than you probably know.

So here it is!!! Please blog it, facebook it, tweet it & especially request it from DJs & radio stations!!!

Here are the credits, couldn't have done it without these special people and I think it's important to shout about the behind the scenes who are the ones that make it all possible:

Directed by Kyla Simone Bruce
Produced by Darius Malik
DOP: Asha McHale
Assistant Director: Brittany Jade McCombs
Colour Grade: Azimuth

Special thanks to Mark Ambrose, Lorna & Scot Rose, Chris Robin, Puffy, Mona & all the staff at Memorabilia Bar, Asha McHale and his Crew, Cooyah Clothing, Sally Cutchie, Della, Jah Cure and all the extras.

You can also check out the behind the scenes footage made by the lovely Brittany Jade McCombs here:

So what else is new? A big highlight of October was performing at the Roundhouse Emerging Proms Festival held at Dingwalls, the sellout show was a huge success and the vibe was amazing, thank you so much to everyone who came down and supported, it really was a special one  there will be some video footage coming soon.

Another wicked gig was Strange Brew at The Big Chill House, beautiful Sunday night vibes  I performed with my good friend Camilo Tirado who I met whilst working on a project with Nitin Sawhney. Camilo is a very talented percussionist, tabla player as well as producer & engineer and we performed a live dub set together debuting the track I recorded with the legendary Mad Professor a couple of weeks ago. The track, currently called Warrior, is due to feature on a compilation being put out by the Professor's label... more info. coming on that soon

Photobucket

Keep a lookout for more Strange Brew events, these nights really are amazing and showcase such a wicked selection of new talent.

I also performed at at charity gig raising money for the Viva Palestina Convoy and a journalist saw my set and asked if she could interview me for the Morning Star socialist newspaper. I am really proud of the full page article that came out of this, it focusses on the political motivations behind my music and is entitled 'Chimes of Freedom'. I think  Louise Nousratpour has written a really great article focussing on my true and heartfelt beliefs and I thank her for this. You can read the interview in full here

Photobucket

Going live on Choice fm for the '15 Minute Takeover' was a big highlight  DJ Hotsteppa brought me on the show for an interview and to premier Light Up Light Up & Burn, thank you to everyone who texted in and emailed the show, the feedback was amazing and will hopefully lead to a lot more radio support. If you missed the show or just want to hear it again I have uploaded it to the myspace player (first track) x

I hope all is well with you all, please stay in touch ~ I know that myspace is much less busy than in the past but connecting with people on here is how a lot of my music career began and I don't want to loose that connection.

Much love and respect going out to you xxx

Woooow ~ so where do I begin, so much is going on and has been going on I don't know where to start...

Recording in Jamaica with JAH CURE @ the legendary King Jammy's

Photobucket

So one of the BIG highlights of my recent adventures was traveling back to Jamaica & recording a track with Jah Cure, I am really buzzing about this experience & can't wait to play you the song once it's finished. In the meantime my sister Kyla has made me a lil promo video of the trip. You can check out my recording session with the Universal Cure as well as my visit to Judgement Yard, a photo shoot amidst a beautiful marijuana plantation in Orange Hill & general blessed vibes & niceness

All being well I will be traveling back to the island in the sun later
this month to shoot the music video with Jah Cure which is to be
directed by video director extraordinaire; Ras Kassa...bring it ooonnn!

Strange Brew @ The Big Chill Festival

Before I flew out to JA, I got some exciting news from the Roundhouse
where Darius Malik & I have residency with the live music night Strange Brew
~ we have been asked to hold a Strange Brew night at this year's Big Chill Festival
in August inside the Roundhouse tent  I'm going to be hosting the night
and performing and we've got a killer line-up which includes:

Plus a possible special guest performer... So if you're at the Big Chill this year,
make sure you check out the Roundhouse tent on the Saturday night...
We will be rockin it!

My 1st Headline Show Outside of London

Another blessing was being booked to perform at our first headline gig outside
of the Smoke. The wonderful promoters of Orange Street Music Club in Canterbury
got in touch and we had a wicked wicked night. Met many warm and open people
which is what it's all about I want to shout out much THANKS to all of the
promoters and individuals who have and continue to request my performance
at their events. It's a much needed boost, the majority of my live shows come
from people contacting me directly and it's still growing. Without people who are
willing to book independent artists, the new live music scene would be even tougher
than it already is. I am fully appreciative of the forward thinking risk takers who are
willing to push a positive vibe rather than the sheep who continue to play it safe

London Literature Festival ~ Free Benjamin Zephania pre-show

Photobucket

So I'm supposed to be holding off the love gigs at the moment and concentration
on working on the new release but some great offers have come up and it's always
difficult to say No! So if you wana check the vibe live, here's a nice one coming
up this Friday 10th July:

I will be opening for Benjamin Zephania as part of the London Literature Festival

Friday 10th July 2009
5pm
Foyer of the Queen Elisabeth Hall
@ The Southbank Centre

& it's FREEEEE!

If you can't make this one, no problemo as there are more coming up... Glade Festival, United Underground, Some Benefit Gigs & The BBC Emerging Proms ~ check the myspace every now and again for details...

Zero DB

OK, so... it's all well and good putting out positive vibes... and I am feeling really positive about things at the moment, but for me it's also important to strive not to forget the vast numbers of people who, for various reasons, have the ability to feel positive sucked, drained or stamped out of them.

I have been following the works of an organisation called Reprieve... "Reprieve uses the law to enforce the human rights of prisoners, from death row to Guantánamo Bay." Recently, reprieve has set up the Zero DB campaign which specifically targets the use of music as psychological torture in Guantanamo Bay and beyond. I urge you to check out their website and upload your own silent protest to support the campaign. We will be filming silent protests at the Big Chill.

I leave you with excitement in my heart, good vibes, positivity and determination... thank you so much for reading this, it really does mean a lot to me; probably much more than you could know.

Much Love

It's been a little while since I wrote on here still and a lot has been going on... so to kick things off on a positive, the lovely people at Digital Gig Magazine have featured me on the front page of May's edition : ) There's an in depth interview & some great photos including some exclusives from my show at The Royal Festival Hall, if you have a spare minute check it out here

Photobucket

Something that I didn't get a chance to talk about in the interview was being asked to record a cover of a Roy Orbison song for his tribute album. I chose to cover 'You Fool You'. Most of my music has grown from a passion for getting the truth out there and focussing on injustice but I also understand the importance of the heart and I have been burned by love in the past so I could relate to the lyrics in this song. The song is now available on iTunes and you can check a lil clip of me performing the track at Roy's special birthday tribute gig here:

Now onto the more serious issues... The G20 Protests, yes I was there and I marched and I witnessed the police violence and misconduct. Although it didn't surprise me, it did sadden and frighten me how a largely peaceful group of individuals coming together to voice concerns over a wide range of issues can be treated like criminals purely due to their participation in a demonstration. We were held in the square outside the bank of England for 6 hours with no way out. The frustration and intimidation was overwhelming and I sincerely hope that somehow we can combat the overtly unjust systems used to police demonstrations.

Photobucket

I urge you to check out this organization: Defend Peaceful Protest this campaign group advocates a non-violent, inclusive approach to working against police violence and intimidation during peaceful protests. I believe that although it doesn't always seem possible there is hope if we can come together, we cannot allow the police to intimidate us and stop us from voicing our dissent. Within this so-called democracy filled with constant monitoring, surveillance and policing, it has never been more important to do what we can to fight for our freedom.

Lastly I want to draw attention to another wonderful organization that I have been working with. Restless Beings is a hub for those who want to draw attention to poverty, injustice and persecution around the world. In short, they voice the voiceless. Yesterday I performed at their one year anniversary 'Still Restless' which was held to raise funds and to show the work that they have been doing in Bangladesh which includes building an orphanage and rehabilitation centre. What I love about this group is that they are very hands on and grass roots, you can literally see the work that they are putting in and how they ensure that all the funds they raise go directly to helping some of those who really need it most.

Photobucket

So what's next... well I've been struggling with the notion of putting all of my energy into this music thing at the risk of getting so caught up in it all that I loose sight of what motivated me in the first place. Exciting things are happening, Strange Brew is going from strength to strength & we've been asked to produce our own night inside the Roundhouse tent at the Big Chill Festival :) I'm also looking forward so much to flying back out to Jamaica later this month but I have also been feeling a bit lost, the music industry is draining and to be honest I wish I could make music without feeling like I'm constantly having to avoid dancing with the devil. I guess whatever path you choose, life is about making choices, hopefully the right ones.

Much love & strength going out to all my people on here xxx

P.S. If you wana check the vibe here's a gig I've got coming up...

Hello Hello ~ Happy Lovers Day to one & all ~

Photobucket

Yes I am writing a blog on Valentines night... I guess this stuff never stops lol. Anyway, I hope you are all loved wherever you are. I wanted to let you know about three very special shows and hope that you will be able to share them with me.

♦ Friday 20th February ~ Strange Brew @ the Roundhouse...

Yep, our residency at the Roundhouse is going really well... I love this venue! The vibe is beautiful. We have another treat of a lineup this month & are selling tickets for a mere £3 up front. Or if you're more of the spontaneous type you are welcome to pay a fiver on the door.

Feb Strange Brew front

Here are some of the things people have had to say about Strange Brew:

&hearts"An exciting genre mix-up of live music" - eventful.com

&hearts"Showcasing unsigned acts about to blow" - Metro

&hearts"A night of eclectic live music" - TNT

&hearts"This is no normal showcase this is the best of the best, an event of the highest musical calibre" - Phatriff

&hearts"I left Strange Brew feeling inspired and in awe of what I had seen" - R.H.A.S Journal

So if you like the sound of that then come down and check the vibe for yourself :D

♦The the following week... Friday 27th February ~ Takeover @ The Royal Festival Hall

This is going to be an amazing show! I will be performing with the wonderful choir pulse & with the London School of Samba This show will mark the culmination of my residency at The Southbank Centre. Tickets are only £6 / £3 concession. There is so much going into this event that I can't explain it all here but here's a video to show you a bit more:

Also performing on the night Natty & Chipmunk

♦ Finally I want to share another event with you which is very close to my heart. Over the last few months most of us have felt sorrow and disbelief at what has occurred in Gaza. I have received hurtful messages when all I have done is try to promote peace. In the spirit of this I would like to invite you to Benefit Gaza @ The Cockpit Theatre

Photobucket

This will be a peaceful, non political/religious evening of food, live music, magic, poetry & readings.

This event is being supported by:

Global Help Initiative for Palestine
Viva Palestinia
Jews for Justice for Palestine
Zaytoun - Fairtrade Palestinian Produce
British Shalom - Salaam Trust
Palestine Solidarity Campaign
Gaza Mental Health Programme
Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights/
Interpal

Tickets cost £15 and ALL money raised will go to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) who endorse and support the event and are a UK registered charity
http://www.map-uk.org/

I truly hope I will have your support with this and that you will come to one or two or all of these gigs!!!

Much Love & Blessings going out to all of you and if you've read this please let me know... I'm kinda lonely on Valentines Night!

Greetings friends,

I know it sounds like a cliché but 2008 seems to have flown by yet a lot has gone on both in my world & globally... I wanted to write about some recent happenings that have been occupying my thoughts & time.

Obama ~

I guess one of the biggest events has been the US Presidential elections... this held and still holds mixed feelings for me. During the run up to election day and when the news hit that Obama had won I felt a genuine sense of elation, sincere emotional uprising and joy that I was on the Earth to see the day that a Black man won the US elections. It somehow seemed to redeem America somewhat as a country for the past pain caused by the transatlantic slave trade and the current effects still so evident in the obvious segregation and social imbalances. It made me so happy to watch the images on the news of people united in celebration, watching Rev. Jesse Jackson cry and scenes of Obama's Grandmother's village in Kenya all pulled at my heart and I have to admit I also shed a couple of emotional tears.

Rev Jesse Jackson Crying

However in the cold aftermath of reality I had to let my often cynical nature start asking questions... In the greater scheme of things, whether you believe the world is run by the Illuminati or not, it surely cannot be denied that a man such as Obama is perfect in gaining support for the superpower that is the USA. Bush was and is so openly hated by the majority of people that it was expected for anything he or his regime came up with to be despised, ridiculed and at the least scrutinized. Yet most of the people I have spoken to are so pro-Obama that is hasn't even occurred to them that it may be useful to analyze his policies. This is surely a perfect smoke-screen for the powers that be to do their will? I am not saying I necessarily think that Obama has sinister intentions but that the people I believe really pull the strings have not changed and neither has their agenda.

I am not going to go into the matter any further here but if you wish to read more into some thoughts that I agree with and that summed it up perfectly for me please check out Immortal Technique's Blog: 'America's Great Hope'.

iTunes Feature ~

So after staying up late to witness the election result I was invited to go into the Apple Offices in London & perform a few songs for the iTunes staff who kindly featured my debut album on the front page of the Reggae Section as well as 'Best of 2008 so far'. I'm not going to lie, this was a great feeling and as the show took place on an already special day it was a treat to vibe out to the atmosphere. It was encouraging that although we haven't put any money into PR or marketing for this album, it has still been recognised. I appreciate all of the people that have supported the album since it's launch.

Photobucket

Album Launch on Youtube ~

Speaking of the launch... I had a lil promo video of this special night put together :) If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet please do!

Since launching the album I've been out performing my acoustic set to promote... I want to send a big shout out to my band Renell Shaw and Kaz Hussain without which all of this right now wouldn't be possible. Alongside supporting Natty on his UK tour we have performed at loads of different venues up and down the country getting our message out there.

Strange Brew @ the Roundhouse ~

A big highlight has to be being given residency at the Roundhouse in Camden with our own night that I co-produce and host: Strange Brew provides a platform for hot rising talent and I am proud to be a part of it. November's debut was a sell-out success and Tickets for December's show are on sale now for a mere £5. We've got a packed line-up of impressive talent:

Dec Strange Brew front

Supporting Fat Freddy's Drop ~

After hosting Strange Brew in the FREEDM Room at the Roundhouse I was so excited to be asked to support the amazing Dub / Blues / Reggae band Fat Freddy's Drop in the Roundhouse's main space and at the University of East Anglia :) The shows were amazing... we made a lot of new friends and also played a session on BBC Suffolk Radio which will be aired soon.

So what else..? Well other highlights have been being asked to read a poem at the opening of the Poetry International Festival at London's Southbank Centre by Yemisi Blake, performing and doing a Q&A on being an independent artist at Music Live by the Syllabus Student Music Network and also watching Nitin Sawhney perform at the BBC Electric Proms :) Oxjam was great and a lot of money was raised... I'm rushing the end of this as I only have six minutes of battery power left which is a shame as the following is the most important part...

Disposable People ~

I want to leave you with a request... Please if you google one thing today, please let it be 'Disposable People' and this is why:

An estimated 27 million people are still locked into slavery and servitude across the globe. I recently went to an exhibition at the Southbank showing a series of photographs taken from around the world showing some of today's slaves. The experience touched me in a way that has left me marked since, the images and testimonials have remained with me and I feel haunted by the thoughts that these people are living now, having had their freedom snatched from them... I am not going to go into any more detail about this shocking yet very real issue as I want you to grow your own thoughts from the information you find without having mine taint your initial shock at the fact that there are more slaves alive today than were ever stolen from Africa during the entire duration of the transatlantic slave trade.

Greetings,

Firstly please accept my apologies for not writing for such a long time. I have no excuses other than having been consumed with finishing my album & trying to push it with everything I have.

I felt it was time to reach out to all the people who have been supporting me with heartfelt words & encouraging messages. I thank you all sincerely for staying in touch; this is what I have been up to:

Album Release:

My self titled-debut album Aruba Red has now been released independently through AWAL and is available in physical format from Rapshack as well as for download from iTunes

Much Love going out to everyone who is supporting independent music.

Aruba Red Album Available on iTunes

I have been humbled by people's responses and would like to thank those who have left reviews on iTunes. This is the first material that I have released and at times this has been a nerve-wracking experience, to know that people are feeling the message means so much to me.

Album Launch Party:

I held an album launch party at The Royal Festival Hall on Wednesday 17th September. Celebrating the end of one long journey & the beginning of a whole new one was both inspiring and also made me reminisce on all the things that influenced the sounds on my first record.

Aruba Red in London Lite

A Big Thank You to everyone who helped make this a success. Shout outs to Riz MC for hosting the night, Paradox & Reggae Roast for providing the best vibe I have felt in a long time, Sam Francis & X7 for your most talented dancing, Your Mum Visuals and my sister Kyla. Thank you to Darius and my band Renell Shaw & Kaz Hussain, Special Guest Artists: Yemisi Blake, Deadly Hunta, Prashant "Engine EarZ Mistry", Sam Carter, Nathan "Flutebox" Lee and Yao Adu. Also thank you to Crown, AWAL, Catch 22 and of course Neil, Cindy and the entire Southbank Centre team for all your support & for providing me with such a beautiful venue.

Aruba Red Launch Party

Music Video for Who Am I?

The week before the launch my sister Kyla Simone and I flew out to my mum's previous home in La Palma and we shot the music video for "Who Am I?". Kyla shot, directed and edited this single-handed in less than a week and I am so very proud of her. She recently graduated from the Glasgow School of Art with a First Class Honours Degree (with distinction!) and I was honoured that she was willing to work on this project. I hope you enjoy it:

If you're feeling her style please check out some of her other work:

Paradox: This Music of Ours

Marrik Layden Deft: Insomniac Olympics

What the Future Holds:

So what's next..? Well I have realised that with every achievement comes the realisation of how much further there is still to go. I will be gigging with my acoustic set up around the UK and offering my sounds to all who would hear them.

There is also word on the grapevine that I will be supporting a very talented artist on his tour in October. Alongside this my collaboration with Nitin Sawhney will be released next month on his album London Undersound. Last Train To Midnight has been getting regular airplay on both BBC Radio 1 & 2. It was an honour to work with such an inspiring artist & if you enjoy deep, dubby trip-hop, please contact your local radio station and request the track :) You can get a snippet of it here: Last Train To Midnight

Much love & respect going out to all of my friends, family & supporters who have been coming to my shows over the last months. To see people singing along to Rebel Soldiers and Who Am I? is crazy and uplifting for me. There have been times along the road when I have had doubts about my decision to pursue this life but when people offer their feedback it makes me more sure that this is what I am meant to be doing right now.

I leave you with an extract from my album inlay:

"I would like to acknowledge those who helped me leave my old life to pursue this one, those whose inspiration has been so valuable: The freedom fighters and political prisoners of the world who will not be silenced, those who dedicate their lives to the fight. The musicians and artists who document reality, I send love, respect and strength your way."

With Love,

Natascha

It's a strange and beautiful thing to be able to express yourself through music.
But please don't think because I am recorded onto this thing and speaking to you that I believe my opinions are more valid than anyone else's. Until I am satisfied that I am living my life in accordance to what I feel is right, who am I to judge?

However, when injustice causes my heart to burn and my anger to soar into double-time it becomes problematic to remain silent and to stay true to my pledge of non-judgement.

Within dreams I rage fire onto the systems that plague us. Those who aid the continuation of those systems fall victim to the power of my fantasies. Language takes on new form. Morpheus seems to live within my subconscious and he breathes life into the energy of my speech.

My expression is an extension of my journey, my experiences, my world within worlds.

Many paths have carried much burden. Our lives intertwine, crossing and twisting vine-like. From adversity and tragedy can come unimaginable strength. Bled through generations until the echoes of warriors past are needed for the next cycle of revolution, the next sequence of struggle.

I come not to preach, not to instruct. I stand before you without expectation. I bring my offering to share & acknowledge what has come before me. What has happened beneath many moons for us to exist today.

Inspiration is not hard to come by if you are not afraid to open your eyes. Drink in reality, do not dilute it. It is here, bitter sweet for us to taste.
